Welcome back to Switzerland - we have arrived in Zurich with a goal in mind - check out the rumours to see if Switzerland really is as expensive as they say! Next stop renting a car and heading out - where should we go?

Basel 🙌🏻 Not many vloggers come here as it’s not in the mountains. But still beautiful and close to France and Germany.
Also Lucerne and Zug are beautiful. If you can go on a mountain coaster, they are super fun!

@@spudwave3661 I am living in Geneva, I would say yes it is expensive, but the salary also matches, and just normal office job you can live decent life. This is contrast of some other expensive cities such as London, New York where if you want keep the same life quality with the same job is not possible...yet the life is also much quieter 😅 and less dynamic, depends on your taste

    • @goblinbaozi6669

I totally agree with you, I am living in Geneva, it's expensive but life quality is also high which is not the case in many other expensive cities such as London, New York, Paris...(they are actually a bit cheaper comparing to Geneva, Zurich)

8:54 I had to smile when you described the location of your AirBnb as "outside the town". Because your AirBnb was still right in the city and in a very popular part of town. It's a shame you didn't discover the river baths, nice bars or the industrial quarter right next to your Airbnb, that would have been a bit more authentic than the very touristy old town, where practically no people live anymore. But nevertheless: I really enjoyed watching your video.

I remember being SHOOK to my core at the prices! My husband and I ended up buying ice cream at a grocery store and eating it in a park at Zurich for lunch because that’s all we could afford. But those experiences made special memories. I can’t wait to watch your Switzerland series!

    • @mysterioanonymous3206
      @mysterioanonymous3206 2 роки тому +16

Don't worry about it, you had the perfect Swiss experience. Because that's how the locals do it too... Because opposite to popular belief, it's still very, very pricey for normal people, even on local salaries.
It can be deceiving because there really are a lot of high-earning/rich people in Zürich, but that's somewhat constrained to a core zone which obv includes all the touristy/popular areas, but your normal everyday citizen has to be just as careful with spending as everyone else really, and no, you won't find construction workers living anywhere near the places you saw in the video.

Regarding the free water fountains: any fountain without a label or warning can be considered safe to drink. By law, only non-potable water fountains have to be labelled. This is in contrast to other countries where potable water is explicitly labelled as such

We live in Branson, MO, a tourist town here in the US. The prices here are quite high so the prices there don't seem that expensive to me.
When Jess said how much you spent at the store I nearly fell out of my chair! That would have cost way more where we live!
Coffee wasn't that far off on price either. We don't like Starbucks coffee so we had to look up our prices. It was only about $1 or so more.
The coffee you found at the shop is pretty much what we pay here.
I'm so LOVING your videos! They are so different than everyone else's!

I don't think Switzerland has to be expensive. If you don't go shopping in the first store that comes along, you actually get almost the same prices as in Germany.
About the swiss markets. There are Coop and Migros the biggest from switzerland. There is like average price. If you want to go cheaper you can go to the german ones like Aldi or Lidl. In the farming areas there are the Landi's where you find cheap products combined with farming stuff. In the little mountains village you mostly find a Volg. There is the same stuff like everywhrere but its a little bit cheaper and less selection.

Zurich was beautiful, then again the entirety of our Rhine - Mossel with 3 days in Switzerland were all fantastic.

Living in Switzerland, I have to say Zürich is my favorite city. You can do a lot, and there's so many different places for everyone. Old town, forest, alternative areas, shops, lake... But like everything in Switzerland, you can do a lot but if you have money. It's funny when people around the world think living in Switzerland means to be rich. Yes you earn lot of money, but you have so many taxes, insurance and expensive prices (like the starbuck's coffee here) that it's sometimes hard to do everything as you want in Switzerland.

As a swiss I'm glad you liked it. Whats funny I was in Zürich last night at like 1am and it was the complete opposite of what you saw. Everything and everyone looked shady. Dirt everywhere. But its quite good at daytime. I can recommend Zug or Lucerne, I love those cities. And if you're open to really empty your bank account go to Zermatt and get a helicopter ride around the famous Matterhorn.

Of course everyone looks shady at night. Probably younger people mostly men dressed black for going out so yeah. But what's funny is that everywhere in Switzerland as you know dirt gets cleaned up overnight and on the next day everything's clean again!

As a Swiss family living in Zurich I can say you gave the best advice to shop in Coop instead of going to restaurants. If you want coffee and cake: The restaurant of the shop Migros has coffee and cake in the afternoon for 5-6 francs.
Have a nice time here and welcome to Switzerland! :-)

Yeah, I'm more a migros guy myself but basically true... Zürich has some good value restaurants actually, and buying ready-made or fast food type stuff in either coop or migros won't be that much cheaper. So you can do either right or wrong. The "street food festival" however is quite the rip off. Been there done that and I won't be back. It's eye watering expensive even on a local salary, I know about 100 great restos with better value food. Coffee is so so, always pricey but rarely really good. I have yet to find a place that cranks out good coffee consistently... i'm disappointed more often than not.

@@randompersonontheinterwebs1348 mythos at stauffacher for example, from the top of my head... Love it, good prices, great portions, great food. Been there? I used to work around the corner there, ate there like 2x a week 😅 you can eat and have a drink for 14 bucks there.
Still Zürich, it's never cheap, but for less than 30 bucks you can have an absolutely amazing Vietnamese meal at Co chin chin or Lebanese at moudi, incl. a drink. You can do that for 25 actually if you really try. A Migros meal will be nearly as much and not even close to as good is what I meant.

@@randompersonontheinterwebs1348 Yeah man, gyros wrap for 9 bucks from mythos for the win. Goes well with a Migros water for 1 buck 😂 Extra points for the take out version to eat it at the most beautiful "Schanzengraben" a 5min walk away. Priceless. Love it.
