  • I've decided that it is time to put some specific focus on one of my vehicles, and since I want to prepare to sell the Honda Pilot, and I have about 8 more videos I want to do on it I have decided to replace the cabin air filter.
This takes between 15 and 20 minutes to do, and will save you about $45 by doing it yourself.
The only tools that are required include an 8mm socket/socket wrench and a Phillips head screw driver.
    Tools and Equipment Used:
    Air Filter Fram CF 8813A - amzn.to/39lEFfQ
    Screw Drivers - amzn.to/3qf3U9q
    Small Socket Set - amzn.to/3qf7TTo

I'm really glad to know how to do this on my vehicle because years ago one of those oil change shops said they changed my air filter & clearly they didn't because i was in the car the whole time and they didn't do this at all. I have same type of vehicle. Glad i can do it myself now

They might have changed your engine air filter. I have a video on that one too. It's even easier to change.

After 19 years and over 60K miles, I replaced my muddy ML cabin air filter that I bought from eBay for $12.39 charcoal cabin air filter. It is much better than than the original equipment and it is much cheaper with free shipping.

your old cabin air filter is old enough to join the military and buy alcohol in certain areas. hope the new one works for another 19 years or the life of the vehicle....whichever comes first.

If you just found this video, I am replacing mine in 2024. I only took the Phillips and the 8mm screw from the RIGHT side out and took all 3 from the LEFT side out. Carefully lower the glove box down to the floor so you don't break the RIGHT side hinge. Lower the metal bar down on the LEFT side below the air filter box, there is enough room, and replace the filter. Put it all back together and you're done. Still a PIA, but this way saves you from the aggravation of taking out the RIGHT underside bolt. Good Luck!!

Thank you for the clear instructions. Nice video. What a PITA just to change the cabin air filter. Bad design on Honda's part.

Thanks soooooo much for this video! I have a 2005 Honda pilot too, and needed to change my air filter. Do you have any tips on how to get rid of the mildew smell from air conditioning? I noticed it and I want to get rid of it. Thanks!!

I've never cleaned the ac evaporator coils in my car before, but that is a possible solution to the mildew smell.
Just changing the filter may help

Its actually a factory thing. I think that my Pilot was the lowest base model that you could get. So its all integrated into the trim. I'd just go do a walk around a local junk yard if they have some Pilots to see if you could get one. Its good because I ran the rear USB cable off the Alpine Head unit into that drawer by drilling a hole in the back of it then you can plug in your phone / iPod etc and don't have cables everywhere.

Apparently not all 2005 honda pilots are the same, the whole dash frame is in front of the metal plate

    • @DIYNorth

It is probably because the air filter has never been changed. Mine had already been cut out, but the first step in my haynes manual says
"If you're changing the filter for the first time you'll need to cut out the plastic cross brace"
I have no idea why there would be solid piece of plastic in front of a part they tell you to change every 12 months.

As far as the glove box….”squeeze the tabs and push from behind” would be a better description.

Unscrewing the bolts that holds the hinge on is by far the hardest part. I don't know if i am working w/ a phillips screw or an 8mm bolt or what and it is all upside down and very tight. I would have like to see more detail on that part. The rest is right up front and open and obvious.

I think that the price is pretty good. I assume that is in USD. I would bring an OBD II code reader and do a 15 minute test drive and then plug it in. The one thing that I noticed is that a lot of Pilots in the 2005 and 200k miles have catalytic converters that are crapping out. I've seen several listings indicating that the Pilot they are selling is giving a Catalytic converter below efficiency code (I assume they hit their useful life around 200k miles). If you can live with the CEL on and you don't need to pass emissions where you live it might not matter too much. The issue is that the Cats are very expensive to replace at Honda. I liked my Pilot though and it's actually a pretty straight forward vehicle to work on.

Wow, they really didn't want people swapping in a new filter too often did they?!
Those stupid engineers couldn't make it any harder to get to if they tried!
IMO it could easily have been changed so that all you'd need to remove to get to it is the two clips that keep the glove box from dumping when open.

    • @DIYNorth

No, I sold it when I moved about a year ago.
There are only two drivers in the family and it would not have been worth the price to ship the honda pilot across the country.
