- What's up, folks! I'm back with another Ultravox reaction, and this time we begin going through their 1983 album Quartet, starting with the song "Reap the Wild Wind." Also RIP to Ultravox bassist Chris Chross (Chris Allen Thompson), who passed away last week (and thanks to Izzy and Mr. Solo for letting me know). So join me as we begin a new chapter in the Ultravox journey. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on UA-cam and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on UA-cam, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

The final part of the track going into the fadeout highlights the excellent drumming skills (or should I say fills) of Warren Cann. He was the ultimate new wave drummer.
That bassline and arpeggiated piano over the keys is the hook - absolutely brilliant. One of my favourites from Ultravox. I was unaware of the passing of Chris Cross, his contribution to the success of Ultravox should not be overlooked.
RIP Chris Cross 😢 He was my favourite in Ultravox, just the cool dude on bass. I had the fortune to see them twice during their reunion tour and he was still the cool dude on bass! Great song to remember him, as the base stands out. So really made me sad to hrar about it.
I really like Quartet, this is a great opener, thanks for a great and thoughtful reaction.
I really like this album. It has a maturity to it that I appreciate and also has another of my favourite songs which I'm looking forward to you hearing.
I do know a lot of people think this album lost a bit of edge in the changeover between Conny Plank and George Martin and that it was possibly a bit overproduced. But the band was evolving as well and so the change in tone also reflected something different in their approach to the album. Personally I love it because it has two of my all time Ultravox favourites (won't say anything more as to what they are although I reckon fans will know which ones I'm talking about). To be honest I don't think there's a really weak song on this album and I actually love some of the really lush arrangements.
Reap the Wild Wind is a decent album opener and was a relatively successful single for the band and also apparantly was their only single that charted in the US Billboard Top 100. I think there's some great orchestrations going on in the background of this track. I love the switch from the verses to the chorus each time when the main theme sweeps back in. It's quite epic but weirdly in a sort of low-key way if such a thing can exist! 🙂
Edit to Add: RIP Chris Cross - another part of my teenage days gone.
Sad news about Chris Cross. I wasn't aware of this.
As far as Quartet is concerned, it's an album I listened to quite a lot when it first came out but which I find hard to listen to again with hindsight, probably because the musical direction is more watered down with a smooth sound that has no rough edges. Is it George Martin's production that's to blame, or is it the band's fault for being less inspired in their songwriting? I couldn't say, but for me Quartet falls short of their 3 previous albums Rage In Eden, Vienna and Systems Of Romance (the latter with John Foxx).
Was sorry to hear of chris cross passing. When i think of the classic ultravox sound for me it was, billy curries modulating pitch synth, juxtaposed with classical and ures guitar riffs and vocals...but all supported by cross' pulsating bass synth foundation. That more than anything first caught my ear..
I was addicted to this album when it came out...though i did miss conny plank as the fifth member...but if you have the chance to work with the beatles producer....have heard george martin did call them one of the most musically gifted groups he'd worked with.
loved the Peter saville cover, a Michael Graves atchitecture and design inspired post modernist esthetic huge at the time...(hate to admit i made my own architectural model monument angled as well..such a geek.)
Need to rewatched their Return To Eden concert here on youtube en memoria...
I think you would enjoy their song " Visions in Blue " .
A great song that could only be played by Ultravox as Midge has stated and the live version is a much more powerful version. RIP Chris more than just a bassist in the band.
I've read that this is album is not held in high regard but personally I much prefer it to the last one. It was produced by George Martin (of Beatles fame). It's possibly a bit smoother in it's sound. Midge has said that the song is just a "canvas of words...it's doesn't mean anything at all" which I think is a bit disingenuous. To me it seems to be about history and the passing of time, like a ghost watching the changes happening to a place he once knew. I love the sweeping, wide open space atmosphere it evokes. R.I.P. Chris.
Yeah. Feels like an odd comment given that the video is so specific with regard to the WW2 imagery and the regular fade outs between the band and them playing characters from the war.
@@jimw859 I've never seen the video. Either way, lyrics are open to interpretation and will mean something different to everyone, regardless of the writer's own intention, about which, as I mentioned, he is vague anyway. I did say "To me it seems". Playing characters from the war does suggest I'm not completely wrong about it being about history and time.

I assume this was made with the intention of having wide appeal and being a hit single - it's my least favourite song on the album. Very sad news about Chris. John Foxx has written a nice tribute.
