I love the practical experience and wisdom in these videos. Thank you Gary! I watched a local master gardener video series and it was primarily theory-heavy and leaned more towards commercially growing (to sell after a few months) and commercial landscaping, rather than teaching me how to keep my own trees and plants healthy for years.
Great information on growing avocado trees. One thing I know about planting avocado trees in the ground is it's important to make sure the root system is strong before planting. Until then keep them in the pot. If you have a poor root system in your potted tree. Use 50% peat moss and 50% Tree and Shrub Organic Garden Soil Plus fertilizer. New growth and vigor will soon follow.
My Sharwill is 4 years old, and it is a big beautiful ~12 or 15 ft tall and it is 10 ft wide! The leaves are always beautiful and glossy and rarely brown tipped like the Hass tree leaves. I bought it from a grower in Fallbrook.
Everything Gary is saying is true. Believe me, I learned the hard way over the years of what not to do. I once bought a big beautiful 15 gallon avocado tree and planted in my yard using "garden soil" purchased at the local home store instead of the natural dirt in my yard. I darn near killed my new avocado tree. It went into shock and dropped all the leaves. It eventually recovered but took a while. I learned my lesson after that.
" Nature RulesThe Garden... You Have To Follow The Rules."~ Gary Matsuoka, Thank You! Growing Avocados 2022, is your Best, Thank You! I am in Northern California (SF Bay Area), and thanks to Gary Matsuoka, I use Gary's Acid Mix for my Blueberry plants, and Gary's Top Pot for everything else.
I am in San Francisco. The question is, do you have avocado? I see the trees. A lot of people have trees around here. But I don't see the fruit. I have a tree with no fruit.
So David where do you GET Top Pot or Gary’s Acid mix, up here in the Bay Area? I’m over in Concord… we are melting today. SO glad that I asked Four Winds to delay sending my Gwen until next week!
Behind a mortuary Bellflower i attended several funerals and in the back is a Fuerte avocado tree i 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide and had 3,000 fruits . It is massive and is amazing
I use to use garden soil and fertile. my plants rooted and died. my mother would just dig a small hole and water water water and she'd have so much success.
Hi Gary are your mixes sold at any nurseries in NorCal? I was pleased to see it being offered in San Marcos at Green Thumb nursery where my parents live.
Currently we know that Yamagami's in Cupertino sells it. It is actually bagged in Sacramento and any garden center that orders products form L&L Nursery Supply can get it.
Virtually any garden center in California can order it through our distributor, L&L Nursery Supply. It has been difficult to get the head buyers at garden centers to order it due to its premium price. They would rather stock the cheapest "potting soil" they can get (only suitable for tomato plants) rather than something that will actually grow everything.
Man my trees haven't grown any in a year. I changed soil that they came with to almost pure sand with a little peat moss and perlight like 80 sand 15 peat and 5 perlight. I water every other day. The plants are green and look ok but they haven grown a inch. I have them in a half barrel and fertilizer with ozmocte plus and also citrus and avocado organics. I follow ur instructions but no luck can u give me any suggestions. I live in west Texas and they are in a greenhouse
Plant in the native dirt,…. slightly elevated in relation to the surrounding soil, basically. Water shouldn't focus-puddle at the trunk,… trunk should be elevated a bit in relation to the surrounding soil. Slopes being an adjusted compromise if on a slope. Keep moist, doin't let get too dry.
There’s so many factors soil type tree size ect ect. Water the tree to its needs there one tree that I’ve found you will know when it’s happy. My trees take tons of Water compared to what books say I’ve never seen any signs from over watering
I wanted to ask, how do avocados do around black walnuts? Are they susceptible to juglone poisoning? I have walnuts around my property so there is no getting away from them. I am considering that I have to grow completely in pots.
I have the same question. I planted a bare-root Carpathian Walnut which I assume is grafted onto black walnut rootstock. It is a few years old now and starting to grow quite well. It is about 20' from avocado trees on either side. I dread digging up a walnut that is growing so well, but if I let it grow will it kill the avocado trees?
I find Avocado fat not so preferred for my body health. Whole fruit sugar's good for me, in general. I find animal fat is better for me, as part of the whole food.
I feel like I just hit the jackpot finding your videos. Best educational information, you're an excellent teacher.

Great class. Sound is a little in the low side
Great video like always Gary a have a question is it safe to put gypsum during the flowering cycle or what time of year is best
It can be safely applied at any time as it dissolves slowly and gradually.
Thanks for your video.
I was not able to understand all your messages (it's my language problem), but it was really interesting.
Thank you
Informative as always🤙

What about ants after spraying honey and water, will they increase?
What gardening store was this filmed in?
could gypsum be used in this potting mix?
After transplanting an avocado seedling from a cup of water to a pot of pure sand, should I add Osmocote immediately or not fertilize yet?
I would add osmocote at planting time.

Where can you buy Brokaw nursery avacado trees besides Ventura?
Viewers could not view the name of the first bag u picked up. You stated that it have charcoal
This is my GARY BEST TOP POT potting soil. It is 35% peat moss, 30% pumice, 20% perlite, 10% sand and 5% charcoal.
What would you recommend for daily watering of avocado in a greenhouse for summer temps of 90F? 1/2" per day?

Would mulching with dead avocado leaves help with root rot on other fruit trees?
Unfortunately I haven't seen any research discussing its effects on any other plants

Hi Gary I am planing on buying avocado trees but I need to know if you ship avocado trees to Virginia or not and how to order them
Unfortunately we do not ship. Shipping plant is a very different business.
@@GarysBestGardening Thanks Gary I will do my best to visit you in California
The sound level was too low had to stop watching, pity I love his videos
Yes. In between ads are too high Volume hitting my ears
Crying kid pissed me off. The mom should realize this is being recorded and step out.
Volume was fine.
No problem with my volume. You need better speakers.
Geez please leave those kids somewhere else . Too much racket
