When are you worthy?

  • Let’s assume that you give someone a very expensive and precious present. But the other person is not appreciating this presence. And even complaining about it. That means that the other person is absolutely not worthy of this present. It also works like this in the faith.
A good example is Israel that was freed from Egypt. They were in slavery but God freed them completely. They received a lot of gifts when they left Egypt and God did a lot of miracles in the desert but the greatest gift was obviously their freedom and the promised land. But they did not appreciate this at all and were complaining. Most of them were not worthy, only a couple out of millions finally entered the promised land. So how do you know that you are worthy?
    Christ says:
“He that loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me, is not worthy of Me.” Matt 10:37
So worthiness is about love, where is your heart? Where is your joy? Because where your joy is, there is also your heart. You can also say, what do you enjoy? If it is always hard for you to believe. If there is heaviness in the heart when it comes to faith, if you do not enjoy what God is doing, then there is no faith. Then you are not worthy of the kingdom of God.
Can it be that there is heaviness and no joy when you are choosing for God? I will read two of the shortest parables in the new testament that were told by Christ and it will become right away clear what worthiness is.
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field which a man found and hid, and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matt 13:44,45
With this verse it has become very clear what worthiness is. This person sold all that he had, and sold it with joy because he understood what the reward was. Joy is the keyword when it comes to worthiness. You are worthy of the kingdom when there is joy. There is joy about the plan of God, what God is about to do. Joy about the fact that you are part of God's building. Part of the church. That God is building his house. There is joy in being a member of the church.
This joy is not the joy that you see in many charismatic churches where the preacher is cheering up the audience to be thankful and to be joyful and to shout. Real joy comes from within and from the heart and this is from God.
    It is also written:
“For the kingdom of heaven is not eating and drinking but righteousness, peace and joy in the holy spirit” Rom 14:17
This joy is a spiritual phenomenon from inside the heart.
