Awwwww.... I miss the Provence so much. It's the no.1 vacation goal for our family throughout my whole childhood and is still. Arles is really beautiful!
You actually can take a boatride and see....ok I don't remember exactly. But I remember, I liked it a lot :)
We loved visiting Arles. We actually stayed there and found it fascinating.
Thanks for your video! Yes, a beautiful city! I was there , one Summer, several years ago, the cathedral was undergoing restoration and almost completely covered with scaffolding and tarps. The indicators of Van Gogh's art must be recent, I don't remember them. Inside the coliseum I spent a while reading the graffiti and initial carvings from the late 1800s. At the coliseum entrance was a poster advertising an upcoming Joe Cocker concert. I can imagine a concert, under the stars of a Provence evening, must be an extraordinary experience. It's great that you take your kids on so many trips. By adulthood they will have seen so very much to enrich their lives. I wish you and your family many happy travels.

Hi Mark, I just wanted to tell you that in the bull fight in Arles they don't kill the bulls like in Spain. Instead, the game is to snatch a ribbon that is on the forehead of the bull. Once a competitor manages to take it, the bull walks out unharmed.

+Desmarius took a few months until I could cross my legs seated or put any direct pressure on my knee. It was bad. Liam was totally fine. Just was more scared because I was hurt I think. My wife wiped off my knee and asked how all this paper got ok your knee but she didn't realize it was my skin. Not a fun end of the day in Arles. I limped through the rest of the trip.

I love Arles! I've stayed in both Avignon and Arles and, while both were great, I prefer Arles. Wonderful small hotel right next to the amphitheater

I went to Arles too last year, just for an afternoon (because I was going to Bordeaux with my schoolmates). I didn't know the Van Gogh's thing, what a pity D: I only visited the theater and the Arena and it was just like being in Italy, where I live! ahah
I am glad you did a review of that city. You have said a lot but I will add more :
1-At the opposite of the gate where you have done your vlog, was the house where Vincent Van gogh lived with Gauguin. This house has been distroyed during WWII.
2-The city hall has a really interresting architecture and especially the ceilling of the hall. Specialists have studied that ceilling and they didn't find how the builders have started it.
3-With the Church, you have also a cloister that you can visit and it's really nice and typical place.
4-Close to the Arena you have the national photography school.
5-In the old train factories area, Frank Gerhy is builing a tower which should be finish in 2017-18

Yes, exactly : a Little known fact the building of the town hall was one of the first achievements of the architect Jules Hardoin-Mansart who was chosen by the king of France Louis XIV in the 17th century to build the Palace of Versailles. The architects regularly come to admire the ceiling of the entrance hall of the building in the hope of discovering the secret of its construction which could not be restored.
The cathedral Saint Trophime erected in the 11th century with its portal is a masterpiece of Provencal Romanesque art and in this cathedral was crowned in 1178 as king of Arles, the "emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Germanic Frederick Barbarossa because at the time the kingdom of"Arles independent between the 9th and 11th centuries was attached to the Holy Roman Empire and then from the middle of the 13th century to the kingdom of Naples and will be attached to France only in 1486.Little known fact the building of the town hall was one of the first achievements of the architect Jules Hardoin-Mansart who was chosen by the king of France Louis XIV in the 17th century to build the Palace of Versailles. Out of Avignon, Arles, Nimes, I really liked Nimes the best. It had the energy of a real city with the historic charm. The other 2 just seemed like tourist traps.
Nimes is actually currently the most populated of the three cities with 154,000 residents against 89,000 for Avignon and 53,000 for Arles .
Even though historically, the city of Nîmes was less important than that of Arles which was capital of the Roman Empire in the 4th century under the reign of the emperors Constantine then his son Constance II then the capital of an independent kingdom from the 9th to the 11th century while Avignon was the capital of Christianity from 1305 to 1417, the popes having deserted the city of Rome in the grip of the civil wars between clans of Roman aristocrats.Nîmes has spectacular Roman monuments in better condition than those of Arles such as the large tower of its Roman enclosure (Tour Magne), the temple of the grandsons of Emperor Augustus (Maison Carrée) as well as its amphitheatre which is the best preserved in the world of monuments of the same type to such an extent that the tourist services of the city of Rome have used videos of the amphitheatre of Nimes built on the model of the Colosseum of Rome to illustrate the latter which is too dilapidated , which caused scandal in Italy. Around Nîmes, there are also the medieval cities of Sommières and Uzès with its cathedral Saint Théodorit and its tower Fenestrelle and its castle, but also the Pont du Gard , the spectacular Roman aqueduct that spans the river Gardon, the Romanesque abbey of Saint Gilles , the medieval city of Aigues Mortes built by the King of France Saint Louis in the 13th century to serve as a port to embark for the crusades in Egypt and Tunisia.

Hey Mark: I've been enjoying your videos of Europe recently. Great work. Have not seen much mention of music scenes so, I'd like to ask one important question (to some of us, anyway): What city in Europe (besides UK) have you found to have the best smaller live music venues for pop & rock etc. Not crappy dives but decent venues where one enjoys being and will see good current popular music. Just ONE city, maybe ?? (or, as many as come to mind) Thanks so much.

+residentflea I'm french and it's not a deal at all. You will meet concerned french about this because they watch too much TV. You "can" (but very unlikely, like everywhere else) have problems in some poor places in very big cities but outside of these places you risk absolutly nothing.
