Thomas Eakins, Painter of The American Spirit

Thomas Eakins was born in Philidelphia in 1844, he studied abroad under Bonnat and Gerome at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts, including sculpture. He also visited Spain and was impressed with Velasquez as well, Upon his return to his city he opened up his own studio, and his father added a top floor to his building to accommodate his work. Eakins began teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, in 1878. His determination to hone his craft often led to the free use of the figure in his work and was let go of his professorship, undaunted however, Eakins made some of the finest works in American art that encapsulated the very Spirit of America not unlike Mark Twain. His reputation continued to grow after his death and now represents the independent and rugged character of Americans in pictures.

Outstanding. Familiar with a few of his more famous works but unaware of several featured here & his bio. Some of the portraits, absolutely breathtaking. Really captured the character, soul of his sitters, subjects. Quite the talent.
