      That is so true. You have to create to have something to shape into something better. I think most writers are afraid of being inadequate, or are perfectionists haha :D

    1. Write every day.
    2. Get up early to work - modify if you can't work early.
    3. Stop self-defeat.
    4. Be open to criticism.
    5. Personal rituals.

  • @jplflyer
    @jplflyer 7 років тому +264

    I'm sorry, but rule 2 is exceedingly closed-minded. Morning people assume everyone else is lazy, sleeping away the most productive part of the day. The arrogance is outstanding.
    The reality is that people are different.
    There are times I get up and write early, but that is almost only when I'm at the end of a novel (the last 25%) and the story has me gripped so hard I can't sleep more than a few hours at a time.
    But the morning is not necessarily the most productive time. It takes time for my mind to really get bubbling, but I'm frequently writing until very late at night, and I do some of my best work after everyone else has gone to bed and no one is bugging the crap out of me.
    Getting up early works for people who are productive when they get up early. Staying up late works for people who are productive when they stay up late. And both habits are equally legitimate.
    So Rule Two SHOULD be: figure out when your most productive time is to write, and then protect that time so you are free to use it.

    • @henryboleszny359
      @henryboleszny359 7 років тому +24

      I chuckled at that rule, too. Mornings for me are the WORST time to write because that's the guaranteed time for interruptions. I tend to get my writing done between midday and midnight. I guess that's where Rule 5 comes in - establishing a ritual that works for you and follow it.

    • @Weird_Quests

  • @morganeoghmanann9792

    Anne Rice has stated in many interviews that she simply cannot write prior to 10 am, so while I myself work best from about 11 am - 6 pm, I also find I can write from 11 pm to about 4 am, but a morning person I will never be.
    As far as the rituals he mentions - they become triggers for the mind to say, "Oh, okay. We're getting ready to write now." It is a very human thing to do. We all have rituals when we get ready for bed, or preparing to go to work, etc. The repetition or routine is the way we train our minds to get our "heads into the game". Personally, I love it and when I have time for those triggers, my writing is much easier and more productive.

    • @Weird_Quests
      @Weird_Quests 7 років тому +1

    Don't follow what others has followed, its better if u find and follow your own way. Writing has no rule, what u need is; when the readers are reading you book they should amaze and find trouble to put it down. Follow a way which no one have ever follow, try to dominate the reader's mind, and believe me, if you find your own unique way of writing,people will read your work, and Eventually you will become international hero.
    All ways think differently because you are different. All the best for all the writers around the world.

      Step one: grab the reader's attention. Step two: keep the writer's attention!
      Beyond that, there's some helpful stuff about sentences and plot development. But if you can't get a person's attention, they aren't going to read your damn book! (or if they do, it's a school assignment. I've a book on nuclei and particle physics that is beyond dull. A single paragraph can put me to sleep; a couple of pages has the same effect as a medically induced coma. At the end of the semester I couldn't sell the book. I mean, no one would buy it.)

    I have a 3 stage morning ritual to help me wake up and prepare me for my daily writing. 1. After making my bed and showering I play this game on my phone called World of Guns. Its this game where you disassemble and reassemble guns. I play it for like 10- 15 minutes, It helps pull away the morning fog and get my brain working. 2. I doodle in my field notes notebook (I love the Field Notes company, look them up their cool!) I heard somewhere doodling increases creativity. Im not sure if thats true but I found another perk from it that helps me allot. My first challenge when writing is writing the first few sentences. I've found by doodling it removes that challenge, I'm not afraid to start writing anymore after doing it. 3. I meditate for ten minutes. This is the buffer stage that removes the layer of morning fog completely, puts me in an all around peaceful state of mind, if I don't feel like writing I tell myself, I can be lazy today, I can sit here for as long as I want, I can keep doing this for as long as possible to avoid doing work. I never reach ten full minutes, I usually get restless then I grab my tablet and start writing immediately. I've been developing my overall daily schedule for the last 8 months, I just started this three stage morning thing 2 weeks ago. I think I'm going to start timing myself, 10 minutes for each activity because I've just been testing it out. I like it. I've been way more productive since I started and so far I haven't skipped any days for writing.

    You can’t turn off or ignore your inner critic, you simply find ways to trick it.
    Writing early in the morning is one if those tricks. Your critic isn’t awake enough, or isn’t strong enough, in the early morning to stop you. The more the day goes on the stronger the critic seems to become.

    I am writing since 7 years. I work very hard. I write professionally in my own language but my language is persian and there r not good translators who translate them to English. I want to write them in English. Offcourse the idea and the story themselves are very important but the language (usage of proper words, phrases, sentences...) is one of the most valuable elements that should be taken extremely serious.
    What do you think , a person who lives in a non-English country, can he learn English to write at the same level like Native-English-writers ?

      a.women before Islam (Matriarchy, emersion of Patriarchy, Zoroastrian and Buddhists)
      b. Women after Islam
      C. Women in new Afghanistan
      2.(2011) Peaks of pride : a collection of my poems. But i hate this book of mine because it was published about 6 years ago , when i was a very young poet and the poems are so weak.
      i have worked a lot on the first one but it is banned in Afghanistan because of criticising the religion.
      All my works are in Persian.

    I walk in circles often outside by 5:30 am then sit down to edit, write, read, (rinse and repeat) and while I write I eat pumpkin seeds, or egg whites, and raw baby spinach, coffee with unsweetened almond milk or I drink it black, and I smoke CBD, take a brain vitamins, burn certain incents. I also drink tea. I am up by 6 am writing.

  • @NatLopezOnYoutube

    Hi internet! So, as someone who actually did research into this, I just wanna say that this...is kinda bogus lol. Most creative people do better work at night, many of the best writers (including Anne Rice) don't write everyday. Self doubt is a driving force for artistic people. It's what drives them to break rules and think outside of the box. Odd rituals are...kinda useless. Wanna write a book? Sit down and write it. This was an interesting video, but please be clear in the future that this is your opinion since much of what you've said is actually false and can make it harder for people to write. Art is a very subjective and personal thing. I see a lot of writers looking for selfhacks and miracles, but nothing works better than just planting your ass in a chair and writing. Stop looking for quick fixes and do the work that deserves to be done. Writing a book is damn hard and a lot of "writing advice" is just procrastinating.

      Try not to become dscouraged. Charles Bukowski wasn't recognized as an important writer until he was iin his 50's. "How to ..." Tip Lists can be helpful, but only act on the tips that work for you.
      Everything that you write improves your skill, even writing Comments on YT or other sites. When I write emails I always use the classic rules of letter writing that I was taught in Grammar School (as we usd to call it), and I never use abbreviations. We are all creatures of habit. If I start writing "altho" for "although," I might do that unconsciously in my serious writing, which wouldn't look very good to an editor. Good Luck.

    I love your videos on this channel, Vic! Maybe you could talk about writer's psychology? It plays a big role when it comes to writing and in my view contributes greatly to writer's block. If you suffer from conditions like stress, anxiety, depression, etc (as a lot of writers do) writing, in spite of it being your passion, can be a struggle.

      Writer's psychology would be an interesting topic. I would love to cover something like that in the future, but not soon. I think it would be a great point of discussion because I think most writer's suffer from something, mostly imposter syndrome.

    Thank you. FYI: Both the speaking & the time the quotes are on screen were too fast. I appreciate wanting to create a short video however many people leave visual portions on screen too briefly. I didn't understand why the shortest quote was on screen a lot longer than other much longer quotes.

    Every writer needs to visit John Assaraf channel and do what he exactly what he says. I did what he said and ended up writing plenty of great poetry that got success. You need the template for your writing ritual and for your work, otherwise you are still winging it and wasting time and wasting energy

    I think probably one of the best ways to overcome inertia is just to shoot for the biggest disasterpiece you can. Everyone's intimidated when they look at their first draft of something and realize its mediocre, maybe not so bad, but screwed up to the point that it sure aint great either. So you should shoot for Bad. The question is, is it Bad Enough? Is it so bad that its come around all the way to being good? Have you just penned yourself a disasterpiece?

    it wud be better if you put some different visuals in this vdo bcs your narration is important to listen to but keeping up with the quotes of different authors and following what you're saying is quite hard to cope. Two elements, narration and quote... could be utilized in two vdos of similar topic. Anyway, useful content though. Thanks...

    Perhaps you are right but I can't wake up early in the morning otherwise I can write more in the night time, in my opinion night time is more conscious and lofty because people are sleeping therefore marmmard and noice can't distracted you to writing,on the contrary in early morning or day time people are waking due to more distract for writing.i fond of to write a book but I have no experience how to write a valuable book my aim to illuminate the name of my country through my book even I m educated person but don't still write a book,an ancient time the illiterate people even those who were never go to school but still they wrote fascinating book where we read in our syllabus,so I guess if you write a book you shouldn't feel that is this good book for readers or not you should only write,and a time will come where you are able to write a book which is very incredible for readers so don't stop to write just endeavor to write your thinking one day you'll be known as a good writer people will read your book in the syllabus don't watch UA-cam for getting experience just do it you can if you are believe to yourself.nothing is impossible in the world,but the condition you don't stop your rhythm let's do for better.

      When I was at Uni, facing my first 5,000 word essay assignment, my mind went blank with the deadline fast approaching. My mind simply WOULD NOT process all the research I'd done. So I started scribbling. Then I started writing nonsense. Then, like a manual car rolling down a hill in a slapstick silent movie, my pen took over. I don't know how, but my writer's block turned into my first Distinction at University. My point is this: just write. It can be anything. It can be irrelevant to your topic or novel. But write. The rest will follow.

    • @Weird_Quests
      @Weird_Quests 7 років тому +1

      There are so many techniques to starting the process of writing. I think the most popular is automatic writing, a topic I'll cover in the near future.
      What it involves is using something as a stimulus (such as an image or word) and writing anything that comes to mind, focusing on never stopping.
      Eventually, you'll be able to pick certain ideas that you think are radioactive (as in they stand out). Then you can develop those ideas further and turn them into a story. Hope it helps.
