  • Can Biden recover from a disastrous debate performance?
What does the release of Julian Assange reveal about the Australia-US relationship? And is Trump’s authoritarian behaviour really an outlier in American political history?
On this episode of After America, Dr Emma Shortis reflects on the first presidential debate performance and the release of Julian Assange, before former BBC United States correspondent Nick Bryant joins the show to discuss the country’s long history of authoritarianism.
This discussion was recorded on Tuesday 25 June and Monday 1 July 2024 and things may have changed since recording.

We need to have an adult conversation about AUKUS. Too many costs to Australia, and we tread too close to American fascism.

I find it interesting that you don't at all talk about the more crucial internal battles, that play out between lobbyists. Whether it's Qatari vs. Saudi influence, or Lockheed Martin vs. Zuckerberg. These are the battles that actually decide American external policy, which is the most important question for a country like Australia. Are lobbyists of one kind or another going to convince the Americans to abandon us in a moment of need [possibly]. If they might do that, then shouldn't we formulate policy for what to do in a world without America [yes]. Does that involve a full, or partial break on the lies of Western (see your discussion of white) supremacy, like carte blanche for Israel's Gaza genocide, arming Nazis in Ukraine, enabling Arab monarchies, etc [I don't know because nobody is brave enough to have an honest debate about reality].

25:23 we should conflate “authoritarianism” and “racism”. They are two distinct things that of course can overlap.

I don't really get why people like this have to keep up the pretense of the USA being a democracy. It's actions have been the most anti-demoratic of any currently existing state, except for maybe the British.

23:15 americas as so focused on left wing vs right wing. No wonder they have such struggles when living in such a state of dichotomy with no ability to reconcile opposing contexts. They lack a framework that bridges and connects that gap. I’m not sure why.
