I have really had a hard time trying to decide to move on from my AX8 to either the FM3 or the AXE III. What I just saw on this video is perfect. The ability to tweak the factory presets like your were doing with the per preset perform page on the fly without having to dig very deep or get into the editor shows this unit's versatility-the processing power in this floor unit makes it an easy decision and seals the deal for me. Thanks Leon for the great video.
I, like so many others who have been a loyal AX8 user, felt a little underwhelmed with the form factor of the FM3 when it was released. While using the "brains" of the AXE FX was a great upgrade, I was so used to the way the AX8 functioned, I found myself saying, "I wish Fractal would simply make an AX8 type form factor with the AXE FX brains and FC switching." Well, here it is, and I have to say within minutes of finding out this was released, I sent my email off to be placed on the waiting list. I've been gigging with the AX8 since 2016 and I'm so ready for this unit to happily "retire" the AX8 which has served me so well. Thanks for the demo Leon. Looking forward to the same kind of instruction you provided me with the AX8. You were invaluable in helping me understand the power of that unit. Cheers mate!
I entered the Fractal world with the FM3 (your videos really convinced me to go for it, Leon) almost a year ago and am really pleased with it 😊 This FM9 induces a bit of a “😰 did I pull the trigger too quick?” feelings but at the same time it’s really exciting news 🙂 That being said I’m happy with the FM3 I have and I still have a lot to learn about how things work… so I’ll keep on learning and will wait for the next flagship model to upgrade some day 😄
I'm definitely not smart enough when it comes to profiles to need the space an FM9 or Axe F3 offers. Today I think I'd still buy the FM3 since it's small enough to be perfectly portable for me and gives me all the experience I need for learning an amp modeler and effects pedals. Most of the time I'm just running an amp, cab reverb and delay anyway.
The seamless channel changes and CPU capacity features is worth buying unit. Also my brother has Axe III and we can send files back and forth that will always work, not always the case with FM3.
Great playing and demo Leon. I'm interested in the more budget boxes but it's still cool to hear this and your riffs. I've got to wonder how this kind of gear will continue to improve in the future.
As always, awesome playing. You have a very stylistic lead style that is refreshing and catchy. Would you say this is worth the upgrade, financially, from the AxeFx II XL?
This really may just be everything im looking for. I just got done building a PC for a studio setup and have been looking for something i can use for recording some of the prog-esque stuff ive written and can also be used live at my church. I was back and forth on a kemper stage/ quad cortex/ axe fx 3. But taking the Axe fx to play live wouldnt be as ideal. But I think the FM9 will really be the unit I've been searching for. Thanks for sharing!
This one looks to be the "Goldie Locks" unit for me. I'm primarily concerned with live performance, so form factor is very important to me. The FM3 didn't cut it. The Axe FXIII is not something I want to schlep around. Now...they've finally come out with something that will replace my AX8!!
Yeah it's been requested heavily. The FM3 is perfect for what I need for most gigs I do but this is for the people who always need that little bit extra.
I know this monster unit allows you to go 4 CABLE METHOD to an external amp, but the question I've got is whether it allows you to channel switch your external amp(with selected effects) using the fm9's switches?can you verify any of this Leon??? brilliant job as always
That would be my question too. If I can use this just as I use the FX8 MKII (just using the effects using my own tube amp tone and distortion). IMO amp sims in the Fractal don’t sound as good as Kemper and both sound too digital compared to the real deal. For those who say “but Metallica uses it live”, oh well, their guitar tone live absolutely sucks. Impressive how Kirk can make a USD 1M 59LP sound like a Squire with a humbucker and a Dunlop Wah plugged into a 15w solid state Crate amplifier.
Dual amp blocks/ ax3 features are great, but l cant see where / if you can tweak any basic eq , bass/mid/treb/gains etc if needed to do on the fly live, like the ax8 allows with dedicated dials, l was excited about considering upgrading to the fm9 but without immediate access to basic eq settings onstage, even if not commonly required to access, l feel the ax8 is much more user friendly unit in a stage environment. Unless there us a parameter to use fm9 front dials in that way? Couldn’t see any reference to that type of eq scenario in fm9 manual. Great demos from Leon, always informative 👍👍
@@LeonTodd Hey man thanks for that info, knowing this is possible has definitely changed my perspective, if this was shared as a tidbit it may sway a lot of ax8 users just having that simple access live. Thanks mate, really dig your vids, very useful 👍👍

This makes me wanna sell the FM3 and buy the FM9! It's like a dream for me to come true. Dual amps = zero latency between switching clean / dirt plus the footswitches. I'd have to buy an extra FC or midi controller, but now it's all in one unit. Wonderful!
Same here, the audio gap kills me, but I like the small factor of the FM3... I will keep it, but it's always a bugger to me this audio gap when switching amp... At least they should find a way to have an alternative way of doing this on the FM3... For exemple, in real life, I use a Bogner XTC101B and I always navigate from blue to red channel. The red channel is "just" one preamp stage more. But in the FM3, I cannot do this as these are two different amps... :(
@@dantahoua The gap got a lot better with last FW update. Nearly seamless. There're just a tiny click when changing channels, but this is the same as when a relay on a real amp switches. For me, the more I/O and switches are important.

Not bad @ $1600. I was expecting over $2000. I chose the Helix route, and I am not switching (yet) until I see and hear one. If there's something the Helix can't do or if the FM9 just sounds so much better, I will consider jumping ship. But I have spent too much time, effort and money to get this far. Damn the Gear Gods!
The sounds out of this unit are awesome. I am a Helix user but it lacks usable live tones out of the standard loaded presets and it’s taken a long time to create them myself for our set list. Do I understand the pre loaded standard presets ( I think you said 400 of them) are live usable and ready to go?
Very cool! I've had the AX8 for many years now, and I love it, but one of the very few things I'm not so happy with, is the pitch block/harmonizer part. I think the pitch/harmonized notes sounded so much better on the II and the Ultra which I had before, the AX8 just doesn't seem to handle this very well, possibly because of the limited CPU(?) So I'm curious how the FM9 handles this..?
What are the differences between fm9 and fm3 besides the obvious switches and routing option? How bout sound wise? Does it have more power? What is important for me the amp sound, then second maybe the reverb and delay, im a simple guy
Why you guys complain about getting the Fm3 lol. It's a more portable device, costs less, gets all the latest updates and you can always use a cheap midi controller with it. @@matthewperry2767 hello! I no longer own it, I’ve moved on to a Revv Generator 120 MKIII and I love it, does everything I need w/no pedals. I can get the best cleans, classic rock, hard rock and metal tones straight from the amp. Best amp I’ve ever played, it just sounds better and better every time I play it. The reverb isn’t so good but I’ll buy a strymon big sky eventually. The FM9 is badass though, you’ll love to it if you get one. It’s very technical, very very very deep dive into the world of options, can be overwhelming at first, real easy to stack amps, you’ll never get bored tweaking it. Some advice for FM9 is reverse engineering, find cool presets, study how they are built and then build your own tones. My fav preset is the Joe Satriani preset, I think it’s # 87 or there abouts, unbelievable solo tone, it’s up there with Eric Johnsons violin tone, it’s that good. It doesn’t sound anything like EJ’s tone fyi. Reason I went back to tube amp is I wanted that physical power you get from an amp, that power you can feel deep in your body, the power that scares you into caution when you’re cranking it. Michael Neilson has the best demo of that Revv Generator 120 MKIII, his demo blew me away. Sorry pal if I disappointed you, I made the right decision for me.
Hi Leon! There's a lot of really affordable AX8 now ( around 800€ ) , do you think It's obsolete compared to the fm3/9 ? I mean in terms of tones, I don't mind having to use the pc to create patches and I never use super atmospheric multiple delays ( CPU eaters ) Thanks a lot
The AX8 is still a ripper for sure. The overall workflow on the FM9, especially with footswitch layouts, is a lot smoother and there's way more power and effect types on tap though.
Just close your eyes to the world around you and live in the bliss of your new purchase. This didn’t really happen. Then in 4 years, you can watch this video and be happy you got such great use out of your FM3.
Not trying to sound like a nay-sayer, but how is this not a helix with different profiles/samples built in and maybe a little more processing power (maybe?)? My helix already does more than I need, and with helix native for my DAW…if I were to trade up, what would be my motivation?
I have a Helix and an AxFx3 and my take is that if the Helix is giving you what you want then there is no need to trade up; but if it's leaving you wanting more then FA offers some of that. The more includes: better routing solutions, more delicious and unique FX algorithms, some better sounding amp models, more speaker cabs, etcetera. I don't think you would gain much in the studio with respect to audio interface duties. I still use the Helix fairly often, maybe more than the AX8; but then, I collect modelers like some people collect amps and/or guitars and I fire each of them up from time to time just for kicks. As an after thought I'd say there is no law preventing you from having both and it's fun to interconnect modelers together and see where that rabbit hole takes you ...
Ya I think you hit the nail on the head, the FM9 looks to be a direct competitor to the Helix. The only real reason to choose one or the other is your preference in amp modeling. Having owned the Helix and the Axe III, I prefer the Fractal amp modeling myself
Surprised to hear that fractal has been able to develop and manufacture a new product like this considering the ongoing issues with labor, shipping, and microchips. Congratulations Fractal.
@@LeonTodd There's a patch from the "Digitech GSP 2101" rack unit called "Floating Fifths" that sounds fantastic ... I was wondering if you were familiar with that patch and if so could you replicate that patch in the Axe FX
To work around supply issues, they actually started making the FM9 "Turbo" using more powerful chips that were in more abundant supply than the originals. I just got one.
So I bought an AX8, almost immediately replaced by FM3, sell AX8 and buy FM3, only to be another waste of cash compared to FM9. Makes me just want to stick with my Kemper and call it a gig.
This may have a year or so of waitlist, like the FM3. Are you sure you need all of this? As a FM3 owner, I'd say, that thing is more than enough for most guitarists.
@@6MileHouse Yeah, noticed after making that comment. Perhaps they've learned from the FM3 shipping disaster, where those on the waitlist got their units more than a year later. But still, a waitlist exists...
Leon please do a video of "dual amp-WDW" with 3 FRFR cabs and a backing track using the USB for this. Most of us are still stuck at home with no gigs so backing tracks next best thing..lol

Hey Leon I've been watching and listening for a while and love the sounds your getting out of the Fractal units I'm on the waiting list for the fm9 I was wondering if your gonna do any classes on to program and operate the fm9??
Not gonna lie. It definitely sucks a bit, belonging too the group of FM3 owners, and seeing this announcement. My biggest worry is that you won’t see the need to do many FM3 videos anymore since you have this. Can’t blame you but it was a huge factor in my purchase knowing you’d be a regular user. I’m sure this will replace the FM3 on your live pedalboard. Do you need this power for Ragdoll shows? Can’t wait for those videos nevertheless. Much love Leon!
The FM3 stuff will definitely keep coming. I'll probably split duties between the FM3 and this for live stuff depending on the gig TBH. Bonus on this is I'll be able to build a patch that can run guitar and bass simultaneousluy so Ryan can bring even less gear :p
@@m.r.4455 That's it. We all know that digital world is always evolving but sometimes this crazy run to be the powerful is super annoying. And the things you buy today are almost already surpassed tomorrow. Analog is a little bit reliable time wise .

I mean in terms of tones, I don't mind having to use the pc to create patches and I never use super atmospheric multiple delays ( CPU eaters )
Thanks a lot
The AX8 is still a ripper for sure. The overall workflow on the FM9, especially with footswitch layouts, is a lot smoother and there's way more power and effect types on tap though.
@@LeonTodd thanks bud , my wallet tells me to grab one of those affordable AX8 😁😁😁 your playing is improving every year 👍👍👍
Leon, do you sell your presets?
They're all up on Axechange for free
@@LeonTodd God bless you!! Thanks ..You are awsome!!
my fm3 looking at this like 7.7
I ONLY WISH I COULD AFFORD IT - WOULD BE AWESOME TO HAVE ONE SOMEDAY, MAYBE. OH WELL......PEACE
you could play a pod go into a pig nose and it will still rock because of your awesome guitar faces.
With 2 amp and 2 cabinet blocks per preset, I would never need more than 1 preset
18:16 what is the name of the song??
That's "Heaven Above" by Ragdoll - ua-cam.com/video/mgvl7ai-Vc8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=LeonTodd
@@LeonTodd what a killer riff, man👊
@@Pantega Thankyou!!!
How much does it cost?
US list price is $1599
So .. it does what a helix or a headrush but more expensive, well.. tell me more
how does this sound through a tube amp?
It works great in 4CM with a tube amp. I'll have a video demo up with it soon.
Cool! The FM3 I ordered just showed up today. then this video pops up.......🤬🤬🤬🤬
Just close your eyes to the world around you and live in the bliss of your new purchase. This didn’t really happen. Then in 4 years, you can watch this video and be happy you got such great use out of your FM3.
@@johnnyh64 your right. Definitely need to attempt to stay away from the shiny new toy syndrome.
Both are great units. Comes down to workflow and what makes you play better. 👌🏻
Ya I think you hit the nail on the head, the FM9 looks to be a direct competitor to the Helix. The only real reason to choose one or the other is your preference in amp modeling. Having owned the Helix and the Axe III, I prefer the Fractal amp modeling myself
Could you play 2 amps at the same time?
Sure
FM9 it's perfect, it's what many ax8 users expect, fm3 is very limited and basic
Now it makes sense why the people at FAS were so quiet after releasing the Cygnus FW... this is great!
This makes sense why I was seeing a shit load of FM3 posted on reverb today lol.
Surprised to hear that fractal has been able to develop and manufacture a new product like this considering the ongoing issues with labor, shipping, and microchips. Congratulations Fractal.
Yeah big time!
Yeah my thought exactly.
I already commented but man. Leon I’d just watch you jam for hours. You are one of the most tasty guitarists on the planet.
Thanks so much mate!
So I bought an AX8, almost immediately replaced by FM3, sell AX8 and buy FM3, only to be another waste of cash compared to FM9. Makes me just want to stick with my Kemper and call it a gig.
I’m one of those guys with an FM3 watching all these videos with a massive frown on my face…
@@GenerationDown it's just bad business. They know us diehards will buy that shit like crack.
2 years from now the Fm10 will be out. Relax though, your FM3 sounds the same, it if works for you no need to buy this.
@@danyeo relax? 🤣 It's only money 🤣
Next month FM15!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P
Was just a day away from pulling trigger on FM3.....think I'll wait to afford this!! Great job Leon as always
This may have a year or so of waitlist, like the FM3.
Are you sure you need all of this?
As a FM3 owner, I'd say, that thing is more than enough for most guitarists.
U lucky man
@@pauliusmscichauskas558 It's allready shipping though.
Kinda pissed I bought an fm3 and fc6 a few months back for mixing amps. And it can't..
Im going to be that guy and kinda wish they had the cpu power in the FM3 form factor. haha. So small and portable. That said, this is a wicked looking unit!
I'm still waiting for an fm0!
That’s a Quad Cortex
Great playing and great sound! I’m still living analogue and just moved into a super tiny house. I’m not selling my tube amps and pedalboards but you sold me on this unit. On the waiting list. Thanks!
It's a whole lot of fun, and a great complement to tube amps and pedals. All the toys!
of course this comes a few weeks after I buy an FM3
Sell it back !!
If I didn’t have the rack unit I would have gotten this instead. More of this fractal.
That was my first thought but then I remembered that its living in my studio full time anyway.
FM9 is perfect. I’ve been wishing, asking, posting about wanting this for literally years. Can’t wait to get my invitation.
I'm in the list too.. I'll wait however long it takes
Looking forward to it myself
@@c22880 I’ve had mine a few weeks now and yup…it’s perfect (for me).
How long were you on the list before you got it?
@@edrosenquist6541 I ordered on September 15 but I was on the “other” list so was technically added to the list before the main waitlist went public on August 27.
That's the first time i'm going to be buying based on only a youtube video but man, the only reason i didn't want an FM3 was because of the "3" and this...
This is 6 better
Damn…….I just bought the FM3 a few months ago. It’s great, but would have rather waited for the FM9 had I known…..
How well does the FM3 recreate Queensryche tones?
I would love to see a "How to Setup the FM9, right out of the box" video. I am sure there are certain tweaks that need to happen to optimize the unit :-)
Great idea!
@@LeonTodd Yes it is and your the perfect guy to do that. It would be nice for all the new users to FAS gear.
I wanted to hear you keep going on that journey solo... Sounded so great
Thanks! The full take is up on here as "schondays"
Hey Leon I've been watching and listening for a while and love the sounds your getting out of the Fractal units I'm on the waiting list for the fm9 I was wondering if your gonna do any classes on to program and operate the fm9??
All the content I've posted for the FM3/Axe-Fx III applies to the FM9. I already have a few other FM9 vids up and there will be plenty more!
@@LeonTodd thanks Leon as you are a master of the fractal units I'll be watching hopefully I can get as good as you are
Not gonna lie.
Thanks Leon! I put myself on the waiting list for the FM9 here in America. I’m looking forward to your future videos on it.
Rag Doll rocks!!!🤘
Very good ,
muito top essa máquina
Hi,Leon that fractal fm9 what a game changer!!! /I'd like to hear u play some fates warning guitar snippets on the new fractal.. that would be nice!
looks expensive..i wait for the joyo version
Are you Joyoking?
No foot volume, ill stick with headrush.
There's 3 exp pedal slots if you want volume/wah/effect control
Epic, I’m so happy for all of us who bought the FM3 & FC6 last year, lol.
Fractal has always a special attention for its customers. Have you bought the Axe 3? Yeah... the day after they launch the Mk2 version. 🤦
Here I am. June. FM3
@@m.r.4455 That's it. We all know that digital world is always evolving but sometimes this crazy run to be the powerful is super annoying. And the things you buy today are almost already surpassed tomorrow. Analog is a little bit reliable time wise .
Never been so happy to have stuck with my ax8.. 🤘🏼
@@ronnieparfait You lucked out!!! Lol
My Headrush pedalboard is screaming "Don't leave me"... Lol... 😂
Im not hearing beautiful valves sag, hearing weak digital fuzzy broken speaker tone, especially the first patch. I was hoping this would be more. 80 rock can be done on a gt100, its the easiest tone to copy. What about warm cleans, chunky sustainable crunch tones. I don't think we're there yet guys. Listen harder. Sorry 🙏 its my ears. I had a headrush which was just the same. All that echo shit, who the fuck uses that. Good electric tones is what we gig with. Those sounds will just sound bad beside a real kit. Why don't they concentrate on better tones rather than all that effect crap, 30 years listening to echo reverb crap. Rage against the machine, acdc, black sabbath, metallica, the cure, etc, no echo crap. Ohhh also i can't believe you changed my life reviews. To false man. Im the only negative review in 1000s my god. Marshall, blackstar, fender, vox, messa, valveeeee strong juiced sustain.
