I have had two canon printers both of which I was glad to see go away. Both were troublesome to use. Always a reason they could not print. I just threw out my $400 three year old eco tank canon as the pads were full and the printer cannot be fixed.
I will never buy another canon product ever. Junk!

Lot of people do reviews, I did like the way you did your review on the hp, Epson & Canon printers on this stream. Good points to compare, did not overdue any bias you would have on which products you like better, yet still gave us your recommendation based on your experiences. Just bought an Epson EcoTank (2803) and it cannot handle cardstock consistently even with the Thick Paper option selected in the extended settings. It inconsistently grabs the paper and sometimes the printing goes off of the page because it didn't pull the paper in far enough. We already had a G3200 which has never had an issue pulling in the cardstock. I'll be returning this Epson and recommend the Canon Megatank models.

Your video is over a year and a half old so maybe your style has changed by now. I would recommend getting into the models quickly at the beginning of your video. I had to fast forward to get to the content that brought me to the video. I would also recommend a visual of the models, comparing the differences by actually showing them. Then showing them actually function and comparing the print quality side by side. I was disappointed to not see a print comparison. Ink tank or refillable tank printers are great for high volume. For home use (where the volumes are under 20 pages or a dozen 4x6 photos per month) is the investment really worth the initial cost? I moved recently and need to replace 2 printers.... a general multi function and a wide bed photo printer. It would be "nice to have" a refillable tank (6 color) multifunction however, the initial cost would be outrageous for the amount of printing I would do, and the ink would outlast the life of the printer. The Epson ET‑8550 is $ 700 dollars while the cartridge XP-970 is $ 299. If I replace the full set of inks 2x per year that is $380 per year. It will take 2 years to brake even. I know tech keeps moving forward and who knows what printers will be like 2 or 3 years from know.
If the Ink tank ET-8550 (or equivalent) were $200 less then I'd buy it now. Can't see why it costs so much except that Epson has to recoup the lost potential revenue from cartridge sales.

I checked out the hp instant ink subscription plan and since I use the HP Smart App it has statistics on how many pages I print monthly. I print about an average of 79 pages per month. HP Instant Ink will support 100 pages of either black and white or color printing for $4.99 a month or 300 pages for 9.99 a month. I'm wondering if I should just get the instant ink subscription or an ecotank printer. I found an ecotank 4800 printer for a great price.

Excellent video thanks, an issue I think that in my case is a Major issue, is infrequent use can result in continuous blockage of the ink channels. If one does not use a printer often enough as in my case like maybe once or twice a week or a month then it's almost like every other time you go to use the printer, my printer Epson Eco Tank with plenty of ink. but always requiring Maintenance due to the lack of use. That can result in very expensive on going problems what good is a like New Printer with plenty of ink when because you are not using it frequently enough, always putting it through the Cleaning process eventually something gives.............with bad results. Here I am with a like New printer, plenty of ink....now shopping for another printer for lack of use I wish there was a way to drain the ink from the vulnerable parts until you use it again, so not to clog up the works.

What I wish you would cover is the "ink absorber pad" problem in all of these printers. I have the 6020 Canon and had a previous Canon Megatank. I'm okay SO FAR on the 6020 Canon but I had to throw out the previous Canon Megatank because the ink absorber pad was full and even though you can add new pad material Canon will not give the user the reset code. I believe that is similar with the other two you reviewed. Love the 6020. I put card stock in the back and plain paper in the cassette. Does a great job but I fear that someday that ink absorber pad will be full and it will stop me for using this excellent printer. Why can't the manufacturers fix that sell the user an easy to insert pad and give the user the reset code?

Thanks for this info on the three printers. I'm printing a lot of very high color usage pages for making journals. I've got two hp printers at the moment and am using their instant ink program which is considerably cheaper than buying individual cartridges off Amazon. I just learned about these printers with the large tank/bottled inks though and they seem to be a real money saver where ink goes. The other issue that I wanted to look into a new printer for however was to find one that has a direct path printer so that somewhat heavier papers can be used. I see that the Canon has the back loading capability. I was told by HP customer service that none of the HP printers have that option any longer, but it looks like the Smart Tank 551 pulls the paper from the back of the printer and straight out the front, so I'm confused. If any of these have a reliable direct path printing option that you have had experience with I would love to know about it. Thanks so much.

would be nice to have a review about all these pads that need to replaced. All of these tanks from Epson/Canon or HP needs their pads replaced in some way or another and its not the issue to replace them, the issue is you cannot reset the code on most of them and the printer becomes useless. Its a direct hit to the customer to throw away printer that can still be used. so yes you are saving on ink but in the end throwing away an expensive printer due to pads or using some sketchy software's to reset the new installed pads.

indeed. that is why i will never buy an epson printer ever. Currently shopping for new printer. Discovered that canon printers will also have this error. *BUT* you don't need some sketchy software to reset it. Its a few key combinations to get printer to maintenance mode and reset the waste counter (search on youtube). Something that should be a included in the manual and not hidden to users. Well newer series Gx040 have the capability to buy these pads (maintenance cart). So canon seems to be improving its ways.

For longevity, the most important things are: availability of parts, user serviceability, and interface compatibility. Anything with non-replaceable Print Heads, Ink pads, Maintenance cartridges, etc. is going to have a shortened life.
My last two printers, a Kodak ESP 6150 aio and an HP OfficeJet 8120, were toss outs. The Kodak had sleepy software and needed a Print Head. I got a new one in 2018 for free from the last remaining Tech Support, who by the way were awesome. Then no new parts available and I have some of the last remaining true Kodak cartridges. They went out of business because they made a good machine that was User serviceable, and their ink was too cheap.
The HP was simply software issues that had plagued the machine since the prior owner had purchased it. Well made but crummy software and zero support.
