  • Matosinhos isn't too far from Porto, Portugal but it's technically its own municipality. Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere check out what this city of its own has to offer. Even though it is connected to Porto by the metro, it has its own beach and lifestyle. They talk about housing prices, green spaces, food, and much more. Could you be an expat here?

    Thank you for calling out Matosinhos for your ExpatThis imprimateur. It's been top of my list for the past several months and I finally get to see it starting mid-September. Because of this, rather than base my northern scouting location in Porto, we're staying in Matosinhos and launching out from there. Love the proximity to the city park and the walks along the water as well as walking distance to daily needs--groceries, etc. I can see why it has so much appeal and am eager to see it, walk it, live it for real.

    How apt…I was walking around Matosinhos two weekends ago. I did a 8km walk from Matosinhos to Porto city. It’s quite a nice wee area and feel like there’s no need to head to Porto city centre. The beach reminds me of Australian beaches and it’s a pleasant walk. The vibe is so different than Lisbon or Cascais. I prefer that bit after Foz do Douro castle and along Cantareira. But defo a place I’d like to come back (especially hardly any tourists) for a walk.

      Josh, I have a quick question about credit cards. Do you guys still use US credit cards l(ike Chase Saphire preferred or reserve) in Portugal. I ask because I wonder if I need to keep my chase cards with no transaction fees when I live there. Ones with no foreign transaction fees have an annual fees as you know. But sometimes it is hard to justify the annual fee if I cannot earn points points, which I can do in the US but not in Europe since of chase cards like Chase Freedom in the points system have foreign transaction fees. Also, are there fees for using cards from Portugal in other European countries? I know you have not travelled in other parts of Europe yet, but I wonder if you have any ideas?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 роки тому

      @@i0r-r-tjtkttl funny that you ask us this question because we were just talking about it today. During this trip, we probably should have used our card more to be honest so that we could earn points. For daily spending, we just use our Millennium bank card. Tap and go. Most foreign cards work here but they might not work tap and go. We’ve traveled Europe as recently as fall 2019 and we used our US credit cards without any issue. We have an AMEX and a Capital One MasterCard. - Josh & Kalie

But do you know if Portuguese credit cards (which I assume I have get when I am there, and I dont know if you have them) will be charged fees for being used in other European countries? I have chase Trifecta, but I can only use the Chase preferred if I want to use any of the us cards because other cards have foreign transaction fees.
      Also, I hope you guys rest up after an exhausting tour. I hope you can do just chill videos of the surrounding areas, without too much effort. Will you have a live chat this Sunday? I think people really want to contribute to your show for all your doing.

    Hi Guys. I like your videos but as a 30yo man from Porto, I’ve noticed that you’re passing some incorrect information on your videos from Porto/Matosinhos. You will not experience min. 4C - max. 10C in Porto/Matosinhos during the winter many times. The normal temperatures will be around min. 9C and max.15C. This is the most common scenario. Sometimes you will experience more. We don’t get snow here like US do for example. Our weather is very mild during the winter. Saying that the average is 4-10 is completely wrong. Porto temperatures are not very different from Lisbon temperatures during winter and we get way less wind than Leiria and Lisbon’s coast. Just so you know, there are a lot of misconceptions about the weather in Portugal. Keep doing what your doing because it’s great but check more sources when it comes to weather and prices please. It’s a small detail but it can instantly change people’s opinion about moving here or any other place.

      @@ivans2967 Hi. Every winter is different here in Portugal. Winters can be dry and sunny or a mix of sun and rain from December to February. The most common scenario would a few days of rain mixed with a few sunny days with pleasant temperatures. We never get snow and the weather doesn’t get rainy for more than 3 days in a row. The precipitation quantity can be high but it rains just a few days per week/month. I hope this helps!

      João, we see the mistake. It was a matter of conversion because our sources showed temperates in the 40s being more like 45 and up but when Kalie said 40s and we were designing the lower thirds, it got converted to 40 F = 4 C when it should have been more like 45 F = 6 or 7 C. Because we're American, our audience should understand that reference as it's a matter of how we generally talk about weather. - Josh & Kalie

What are we missing? What's the best way to find reasonable accommodation for a longer stay? We're looking at visiting for 3-6 months to really get the VIBE (lol) of each of the areas of Portugal. Where do you recommend staying for a trip like this? Are there alternatives to airBNB? Obrigado

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  2 місяці тому +1

      You're looking on Airbnb, which is going to be higher rates than long term contracts. The cheapest long term stays will be found in general direct to owner/landlord. You'll be hard pressed to keep costs down as low as what it's like living here long term if you're here and only planning to be here medium term (3-6 months). Long term housing owners want to secure people for a year or more with a decent rent. Short to mid-term is looking to maximize profits.
      Check out idealista.pt to get a better indication of market rates for properties that work for the 3 of you.

    Great information! How does Matosinhos housing prices (for purchase) compare with Braga?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you. Rent will be around 20% higher in Matosinhos and for housing 45-65% difference price per square meter depending on where you're buying. - Josh & Kalie

    When you go to restaurants can you briefly touch on the vegetarian choices?
    I see you did with the non-fish options here, just something really quick would be appreciated!

      Hi, we've just wrapped up our 90 days. Ami and G have gone back to the UK and on Sunday we're going to release our 90 Tour of Portugal video.
      What we can tell you is that places have some sort of vegetarian option in each city. Be careful to indict if you're vegan. Make that clear because it often times gets confused at places that don't specialize in vegetarian/vegan food. - Josh & Kalie

    Can you explain what is T1 and T 2

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  2 роки тому

      Bedrooms. T# = number of bedrooms. T1-1 bedroom T2- 2 bedrooms. There's a specific classification on what constitutes a bedroom by law in Portugal. The room most certainly needs to have a window. Hope that helps. - Josh & Kalie

    Thanks so much for the video on Matosinhos. Next year on a "scouting trip" to Matosinhos I plan to get a NIF since I no longer need a representative, I'd also like to open an Activo Bank account, do you know if this would require a financial representative? I live in the USA.
