Drums are not made with the Linndrum. Listen carefully, they are still using the Korg KR55. At least for the snare. Kick has to be the Arp2600 like they did on the S&S album. I consider this and meaning of love like the last songs of the S&S sound era. The rest of broken frame has a different sound to it. More dark.
It really is one of the best constructed. It is a true "arrangement" with melodic motifs leading into the verses and a structure like songs had in the 30's and 40's with the standards.

Interesting how Depeche Mode made those sounds for See You, one of my favorite songs. The PPG synthesizer was more popular in Europe I believe. Rupert Greenal of The Fixx and Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream used the PPG as well. Great demo sounds right on note by note!

3:49 "It was pretty easy to create...." Once you know, yes, but pick a VST and try to find out on your own, and most of us will disagree (based on questions on forums etc). From videos with the hardware PPG it is almost impossible to find the settings. So, I'm very grateful you showed us how to do it.
The bass intro is based on two bass lines ..one is the Moog source synth which is intermittent the other comes from the Jupiter 8 I found the PPG Wave settings on the Waldorf Nave app which has PPG patches Vocal/Formant for the choir sound and ‘Choral Strike’ which is the ‘brap’ sound I use the Celesta for the bell And two separate brass saw patterns
Oh and another odd thing they did was to not start the track on the beat - at the beginning they skip a couple of notes so your ear hears that bass line completely out of whack (at least for some people) until the vocal comes in.. then your brain does a flip as it locks onto the real beat - I love being thrown like that. It’s a strange thing to do and there’s only a few songs that do this. I think there’s a UA-cam video on this subject.
Yes, I think your mind has an expectation of where the "1" is and then the drum starts on a different beat. I could have done better on that aspect but I had a certain loop of midi I was cutting and pasting. Thanks for pointing that out.
Not quite correct...in order for "some" looped sequences to work with the rest..you actually HAD to start on an odd beat...or in the middle of a bar/beat...especially if you work with a linear sequencer..and if you run it as an arpeggiator..like they did in this case...they played the bassline by hand..arpeggiated in the studio and changed notes by hand..it wasn't programed in one go.
Excellent Job, I also recreated see you and did some research on the synths they were using back in time. I consider See You sounds more as part of the speak & spell era and therefore I suppose they were not using the Linn Drum. The rest of the album's drums sound more like simmons though I doubt they used any stock sound. My best guess is they created any percussion sound with the ARP 2600, bassdrum as well as snaredrum and special FX. Or they still might have used the old KR55 for the Snare Sound. There're some DM soundpacks for Arturias V-Collection, they did the main percussion sounds of Speak&Spell and A Broken Frame using the ARP 2600 VST, sound pretty decent.
@kalgan2357 you are correct - I can confirm that the "See You" snare is indeed the KR55, which (bearing a somewhat deep Vince Clarke induced cigarette burn mark) is gathering dust on a shelf right next to me ... - the ABF era drums consisted of: the Simmons SDS-V + ARP2600 (occasionally for kicks, as well as, noise/reso percussion & hats) + KR-55 (on "See You") / TR-808 ("Satellite" "The Sun & The Rainfall" "The Meaning of Love" ) - the lads never quite made use of the Linn machine (instead, they made great use of the Drumulator on CTA & to a much lesser extend SGR)

I don't disagree. The Linn's 8 bit kick and snare got me close enough and there is no hi hat in this song, I would love to know Daniel Miller's ARP kick patch but I couldn't get that sound in See You. They did purchase a Linn and also used the TR-808 you see pictured as well as the Simmons SDS-V. There's tons of ARP 2600 kick sound plus Simmons and a few from the 808, e.g. clap, and probably the conga on Shouldn't Have Done That. If you sample the kick and snare from Dreaming of Me you would come closer to the sounds in See You, not the exact since they seem to change the kick sound slightly between every song. I don't think the bass is from a Jupiter 8. It sounds more like a Moog, maybe a Moog Source which we know they had in 1982. The Jupiter 8 was most likely introduced when Alan joined later on when touring.
Oh Arturia - I love their synths. By the way, Depeche Mode used the emulator. Years ago, I practically converted all Emulator II sounds from the original disks so that they can be loaded into Kontakt. All of it unprocessed, without effects. ;)
The intro bell is more like a Celesta or Vibraphone also there is an underlying brass that deviates from the Harpsichord/brass on the bridge solo it doesn’t play the same notes as the main instrumental break The kick is the ARP 2600 the snares are the Korg KR55 the bass consists of A Moog and Jupiter 8 together Like how you’ve spotted the sub bell nobody seems to get that bit right

There are 64 variations in each wavetable so I will leave it up to you to figure out which one, as for myself, I just had fun guessing but I am not an expert on Depeche Mode. They say it is the equivalent of $30,000 in today's money for a PPG back then. So it was just a fantasy in a magazine unless you were at the very top. So much better now with Behringer about to make a PPG soon.

Yes, the structure hearkens back to standards from an earlier era. For me, See You is one of the most perfect structures, like a formula for a pop song. Each verse has a lead in motif first and then he starts singing, and the anti-chorus is great with the bells and harmonies with the vocal. "A Photograph of You" has a tight structure as well with its little instrumental and anti-chorus break. I have to think that some experienced writer who knew all the standards gave Martin a little instruction.
Ill personally pay you to talk about and remake more Depeche mode songs one of my favorite groups and im working on a project very much influenced by them i would love it so much this video is amazing!
the bel sound is actually the one that put me off. It's actually totally wrong. The original has mor accent (metal) to it. And the "answering" harpsichord has more ring and complexity to it. So both probably has more action going into it. This is quite common when people think that "this" and "that" sound comes from one patch ore one synth, when it's actually in many instancies comes form different synths or multiple layers.

On closer listening it seems that the snare on See You came from the Korg KR55 and the kick from the ARP2600. Pretty much the same set up as on their first album. Probably got the 808 when they moved on to recording the album proper. You did a fine job recreating the track btw
Were they using the EMU on this album? I know for sure they used the PPG because we have studio pictures of it, and Dave could've made his own wavetable of his voice. I really don't know, but what is your source for your information? You could be right.
Pressing "DIGI", selecting wavetable then choosing wave with "OSC" doesn't produce sounds that are even slightly similar, so there must be some other settings involved as well.
@@Digiphex Thanks for fast response. For example, @3.55 you start explaining how to create "vocal" sound, so it's wavetable 027 FmntVocal, then wave 30. In my experience - it produces a different sound. Same goes for "bell sound" @5.57 (WT14, WV4) and "Harpsichord" @6.33 (WT29, WV10).

Go watch that and you see me turn these exact same raw waves into the same instruments with no VST used at all, only the original PPG waves! I read something in an interview that it was a Moog Source in this particular song. Feel free to link to your source that contradicts this, I am no expert on DM.
The bassline in that track was a mono synth, likely Arp 2600. Jup 8 is a bad choice for bass because it has a weedy low character, and with the polyphony you get a lot of uncomfortable overlaps between notes. A better choice would be Roland’s SH2 plugin.

Yes, there are basic attack and decay envelopes as well as filter settings. But the crucial thing is the wave you choose. It looks like I show the front panel of the synth at times. Copy those settings.

If it does have some PPG it is layered in there with DX7, etc. I could figure it out but it would take some time. To make your life easy, you could reproduce it well with Korg M1 VST.

Right zibbybone. Snare and kick is the same like in Dreaming of Me. In this cover, drums are just weak. And there is a hi-hat. Open hi-hat.

The drum sounds are stack of KORG KPR-77 and TR-808. And the "Castanet" will be much better with ARP 2600s internal spring reverb fx.

I think the snare was created using a Roland TR808 with maybe some noise added. A Broken Frame is mainly 808 and Simmons SDSV.
They had an 808 and the PPG there in the pic. Could be.

I always thought the vocal patch was a sample of Dave’s voice done on the EMU.

There are 64 oscillators per table so I had to pick one, but from the almost endless choices, one could dial it in better.
