Mine is about 5 years old, I give pieces away once a year. It's about 3 feet long at the longest pieces. It pipes out 3 ish arms a year. It flowers basically non-stop from May to September . It's in a terracotta, that sits in a basket with some of my other hanging guys. It's in full sun mothers day to Halloween and I water it maybe 3 times once it comes back in for winter. I'm in zone 7. It is very content in unheated sunroom in an east facing window.. it goes down to 40 when it's really cold out.
Wow that’s awesome! I just got one that is a nice size abour 9’inches with 4 arms and tonssss of babies shooting out at the base. I see a bloom just beginning . I’m wondering how long it would take to bloom from when you first see it , I’m so excited lol! Also , I’m like terrified to water mine ahah!!! Do I water when completely bone dry? Or just a few months ? I’ve been researching care like crazy . I finally snagged one last week 🎉❤❤❤❤❤
Hi I’m glad I came across your video. I brought a 3 inch monkey tail cactus cutting a few months ago and planted it in the smallest pot ever. After watching this video I think it’s time to repot into a slightly larger pot for the rest of the summer
The growth in each update blew my freaking mind!! The roots too!! 🤯🤯🤯 like that thing is growing so fast for a cactus! I’m not a cacti loving typa person but I’m highly considering adding this one to my collection ☺️
I'm watching this again on Oct 7 2023 and I am so impressed on how big your monkey tail is now! It gives me hope for my single "ringlet" tail 😂😂 and I just LOVE your hair in this video 💚
This was totally my experience with my trailing cactuses! Not seeing as much growth on top but when I checked their roots found it basically super root bound! My monkey tail grows from both the base and the tips; my hypothesis is that it's about the type of cutting it is... Or root space in the soil? Haha 🤷 All learning together :D
I'm not a cactus girl but I love Monkey Tail. I started mine from two tiny cuttings from my auntie's big Monkey Tail and now it has filled it's pot. mine produces narrow shoots, I guess because the poor thing is always thirsty🙈it's in my balcony in almost full sun in a tiny terracotta pot and dries within a day in +35°C summer days here and I'm too lazy to water her more than once every ten days or so. I have to bring it back inside before it gets too cold and give him a much bigger pot. BTW mine looked wierd too but when the babies which grow at base get taller and bigger, they will cover the base of other shoots and it will look more uniform
Yes, please keep doing these long update videos! I'm sure they're a lot more difficult to make, but it is so satisfying to get invested in these plants and then have immediate updates. Also, you have the cutest hair in the world omg lol
just set the 2 baby pots inside of a larger empty pot. then the two babies tip over, they will lean against the walls of the larger pot and not fall over. it works like magic. 😊 I also hung the bigger pot in a macrame hanger so I can up-pot for years.
I know you want a nice full, big pot of the monkey tail but my heart melts a little looking at those cuttings in the tiny pots ☺ they are so cute when they're small
I don’t own one nor am I a cactus girl but this was a great video! Favorite yet I think! That growth was so exciting and rewarding even if it wasn’t my own. I squealed with you! I do like the idea of putting all the babies together for a more uniform plant but I think I would leave the babies attached to the mother plant at the base. Maybe trim the three new ones off again. I still cannot believe that growth in such a short time! Fantastic video!
Thank you so much Kelly! Really glad you enjoyed 🤗 and yes good idea, that's what I'm thinking of doing! I'm excited to see what becomes of it next summer.
I really liked that you showed the progress over time in one video. It was worth it, keeping lips zipped about this cacti for so long 😅 I have two MTCs and they are so beautiful. I got them like two years ago, I think. They are full and getting long, but the arms are not as thick as your mother MTC cacti.
SHE IS LOOKING SO CUTE! I really need to check the roots on mine.. that root growth is insane! So my monkey tail cactus is a 7” terracotta pot with about 7-8 single cuttings (propagated in the last year). It’s super interesting to see how your mother stem EXPLODED! Mine are all growing long from the tips rather than pupping out. I’ve had it in an east facing window which was good enough.. but I’m noticing the stems are really reaching for light and growing rather thin. I moved it to a south facing window about a week ago so hopefully it takes off 🤞🏼 I like your idea of replanting all the pups together for a more even pot… you can keep the mother stem seperate and let it be a freakin monkey tail pup factory 🤣
Mine was growing so nicely as one long tail until I accidentally bumped the tip off. Now it has three new little babes coming out, which I’m honestly not a fan of aesthetically! I like your idea of harvesting the juvenile growths each year off a wonky mother and planting anew. A new spring tradition 🌵😁
Awesome job and a great video. If you feel like experimenting look into grafting. there are people that graft a variety to one cactus. Grafting pumps the growth and from a small piece it should push a few babies. Once ready cut off, callous then root. Monkey tails are awesome, it looks like someone glued the flowers on it. Shame I can't post a pic here. Kinda feel at home here with all the other lovers of this plant
Idk why but I enjoyed this video a lot. You don't see very many UA-camrs put effort into like filming time lapse videos. Yet, the results are always fun imo.
I've had one, (well 5 tails), for a couple months now. There was 3 close to the same size and 2 laonger, one of which is lager than the other. I have them now in a hanging pot outside on our West facing deck. There has been some new growth, but not like yours. But then we have had weeks with excessive heat and weeks with more rainfall than usual. So I've been thinking that could be why there hasn't been a lot of growth, yet. I think you should level yours in the same pot even after you up-size it. The qwerky ness is part of the plant, well that's why we got ours.
By far my favorite plant in your collection! Your monkey tail has so much character…it’s so cool! 😎 I have one & mine doesn’t grow roots like yours, I’m in awe 🤩
Wow!! This cactus is amazing!! I might need to find one of those. With cacti (and succulents), you can reduce the root ball by about half every year. I do it with all of my cacti and they don't mind.
I have a golden rat tail cactus (cleistocactus winteri) and I adore it. Mine grows pups only at the base but also has tons of roots. Nice video, I love the update!
Basically I bought 4 little babies on Etsy and I dropped the pot one day and broke one on half and it grew 2 new ones from that break and the old tip sprouted roots, so I realized if I cut them all into 2 inch chunks they’d all put out multiple growth points. Now I have a pot full of multiples with uniform growth. Just cut those skinny ones up into smaller chunks!
This is awesome! I've been planning on propping my golden rat tail cactus and seeing the growth from your monkey tail got me really excited. Can't wait! 😃 still hoping I could find a monkey tail in Ontario though. 😅
That was awesome. That is all rooting like crazy, I can't believe how fast the cuttings rooted!! I have only had mine for about a month, I bought 3 and potted them all together, they're about 12 inches long, starting to grow something on the tips. Now I know if I cut them it'll promote growth on the top 😅
Those roots!!!! Omg! I loved this type of video, I found it really relaxing too. I can't believe how much new growth happened, the babies are so cute. I love the fact it looks crazy and weird and awkward, it's beautiful 😊❤🤗 hugs for you and Olive xxx
This is a pretty perfect repot for spooky season! It did look a lot like a spider by the end! I have one that’s only got the single “tail” and I’ve been thinking of chopping it so I can have more grow from the base, your video has given me motivation to give it a go!
Great video. I also have a monkey tail cactus and and keep them east so planning to do the same thing. But they are in plastic pots top heavy. I added pebbles to keep balance. I need to get a few terracotta pot. I have east window normally but last year had them outside getting south and west sun and grew well.🤗🌵 After watching your video I need to think where the plant is going to be placed 🤔
Omg I can’t believe how quick these things grow roots! I’ve had mine for maybe 5 months and it hasn’t done much growing for me lately so after watching your video I decided to check the roots.. WOW was mine root-bound! 😂 So glad I watched your video! Can’t wait to see how your weirdo grows ❤
One of my favorite videos Fern. Love your weirdo plant. I recently got my monkey tail and found your video very timely. I am obsessed with my monkey tail. Hope it grows funky like yours.
Mine has grown 4-5 shoots (if that's the word) from the base for the last two years, but it's recently got its first shoots from the tip of the main tail.
I would suggest a very deep decretive pot perhaps to see if the plants focus their energy on making roots or making tails. Honestly, if they become root bound that quickly, then how do you put them in just a hanging basket? Perhaps they enjoy being root bound?
Omg this video is everything!!! 😁 I love the part when you were questioning what you've created. I laughed. I think it looks awesome the way it is and that new growth looks to be super promising when it fills out. You actually inspired me to get a monkey tail but crystal star nursery didn't have any at the time i was looking so I got a golden rat tail from them instead. I love mine and hes just doing his thing but after watching your journey I'm super excited to begin propigating mine. Love your content. Keep on keepin it real gurl. Much love. Thank you. 💚
Nice video love this cactus. But I learnt that these cacti don't need large pots. I've seen huge huge specimens growing fine out of very small pots. Mine is totally root bound and is growing so fast. Also in the wild in Bolivia they grow of rocky cliff edges.
Loved this video! I bought a 6 inch monkey tail3 years ago,it kept growing new arms from the center, but the original one was slightly longer than the rest,so I cut that one off and cut it into 7 2 inch pieces! They all grew like crazy! My original has 14 arms that are about 3 feet long that hang in a hanging pot! It’s huge and even! I would definitely cut up those weird looking ones,Lol and cut them up in several pieces, that way you get heaps out of 1 arm! You did a great job! 😍
Great vid… Once they’ve calloused over you can plant them in the same pot as the established plant. At times I’ve been lazy and cut and potted straight away
omg THANK YOU for making this video!! I have a monkey tail cactus as well, my favorite and only cactus and i think i ruined it when i propagated it a while back. I needed this video, thank you Fern!!!
I bought my first monkey tail this spring. I have enjoyed watching you. I see the first thing I need to do is get a better soil mix. I have to much soil in mine. One of the tails I bought actually got small! So I am trying to see what I can do to bring it back. Thank you!!
Perfect for "Spooky Season" you should decorate the pot. I have one. Mine is small and a single stem...this spring/summer it has grown, however it's still to sm to cut. Yours is fantastic!
I also have one that I have had fir about a year but mine is still very small. LOVE this plant though! I have a feeling I need to repot it with different soil and maybe a bit bigger pot and also water a bit more often. 😁
i loved this video! i want to see more of this in the future, that monkey tail in a few years will be amazing. Mine is very very tiny, is a cutting that someone give to me months ago, so for now i have to be patient, but i like a lot this journey.
Love the weird plant. Gotta time next year's update for a Halloween video. Spooks spider monkey tail... mutant plant. I also love these progress videos. !
this video was so awesome!!! thanks for all the effort you put in man, it seriously shows! the monkey tail cactus is looking so awesome and i can’t wait to see how it transforms over the years!!
I think I saw something like this where I was a kid. And I thought it was like... Dead and I said out loud : Mom those cactus must have seen better days. How you guys Hanging? Hangy day today huh? And almost everyone who was near then started to laugh and I was so confused 😭🤣
Leave it and see what happens! I'm so curious! I think there were new growths at the base because you uppotted it and the soil reached higher, the hormones of the part that went under the dirt stimulated new growth - but I might be wrong, maybe both the cuts at the end and the repotting did the trick. Anyway I super like it, I have a few succulents, but not that one, I'll probably get one after seeing your video. I don't like the hairiness but after all it is a funny thing! :)))
I have two monkey tail cactus but they are growing from the base one is about 2 feet long and the other is about a foot long with a bunch of other babies coming out of the base I absolutely love them to they are so awesome
It’s so cute, also , I feel like you should cut the tips off all the cactus so it forces them to push babies out from the base, wait a year, and boom, super full monkey tail!!😂
I’m sure as a creator making these long-term videos isn’t easy, but man as a viewer I love them. Thank you for your dedication!
Yes!!!
💯💯💯
I agree
Do you recommend using cinnamon as a rooting powder ?
I’m not even a cactus girl but I am so invested in this journey omg
Same
Me too🙈
I'm amazed by the roots this guy puts out! It makes it feel so rewarding to see root growth like that.
Can you do an update on this cactus? I was so inspired by your monkey tail that I got my own!
Mine is about 5 years old, I give pieces away once a year. It's about 3 feet long at the longest pieces. It pipes out 3 ish arms a year. It flowers basically non-stop from May to September . How do you get it to bloom?
It’s always a good day when Fern posts 🥰
Thank you for watching 🤗
I was clapping when the mother plant was revealed with all the new offshoots. Love it! Such a satisfying journey
I love that weirdo
haha me too!
Hi I’m glad I came across your video. I brought a 3 inch monkey tail cactus cutting a few months ago and planted it in the smallest pot ever. After watching this video I think it’s time to repot into a slightly larger pot for the rest of the summer

A lot of cacti grow surprisingly fast! I have a prickly pear that’s tripled in size in 3-4 months 😊
omg i love how the tip of the cactus is growing three thumbs. i honestly think it has more personality with it
Wow, I can't believe how quickly that grew! I want one now!
Me too. 😁❤️
Ah! The baby monkey tails are so cute!!
right 🥺
I'm watching this again on Oct 7 2023 and I am so impressed on how big your monkey tail is now! It gives me hope for my single "ringlet" tail 😂😂 and I just LOVE your hair in this video 💚

I was just thinking about adding this plant to my collection. I'm glad to see they're easy to work with.
Yes I find it to be pretty easy and definitely fast growing for a cactus!
Honestly I love how wild it looks haha. This was a really fun video to see all the progress, I was shocked to see those baby tail roots!

How is your monkey tail doing now? I just found one, and I’m so excited!
I loved this video. That Monkey Tail Cactus is perfect for Halloween now 😁 It is so cool! 🙉
Oh boy! I was so excited when you showed the babies growing from the base of the Monkey Tail!!
Love it🙂

Love these (unintentional) progress videos! Way to care for your monkey tail!! So much growth in so little time! 😍
I love how your arrangement came out. Those roots look strong
Oh! they look so good. I also have my eyes on the jade plant. I could spend hours watching people repot their plants. I find it very relaxing.
I'm amazed at how fast it grows!!! Great video!
I know you want a nice full, big pot of the monkey tail but my heart melts a little looking at those cuttings in the tiny pots ☺ they are so cute when they're small

Yay!!!! I just went to the local nursery and found one! I’m so so happy!!! It looks alittle quirky, but I love
This is my dream plant but I’ve been too intimidated to purchase and this is really making me want one. I’d love to see more updates, I’m invested 😍
I do really love this type of video, it’s cool to see all the updates and progress clips combined 💚🌵
SHE IS LOOKING SO CUTE! I really need to check the roots on mine.. that root growth is insane! I can't wait for the spring 2024 update on this plant!
I enjoyed the video, I’m sure it was the soil you mixed, great job.
Yay! I love propagation videos with results, it's so satisfying and also very helpful! I love your plant and think it looks cool!

I loved this idea and I love that funky new growth. So cool seeing them put out all those babies
Idk why but I enjoyed this video a lot. You don't see very many UA-camrs put effort into like filming time lapse videos. Yet, the results are always fun imo.
This is such a weird and cool cactus haha. Cacti are long term projects, for sure.
You are so funny😂 "weird frankenstein mutant", also your hair looks really cute in the last clip! Thanks again for a great video

THE CLAW
That's all i could think of when seeing the 2.5 month growth update 🤣
HAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!
By far my favorite plant in your collection! Your monkey tail has so much character…it’s so cool! 😎
I have one & mine doesn’t grow roots like yours, I’m in awe 🤩
Wow!! This cactus is amazing!! I might need to find one of those. With cacti (and succulents), you can reduce the root ball by about half every year. I do it with all of my cacti and they don't mind.
You inspired me to get one of these! I found one today long and big! It was a rooted cutting and he sold it to me for 50 cent! 😮 I feel blessed!
I didn’t even know they would grow more from their tips! I just thought it was from the base! Thanks for sharing ❤️
So proud of your cactus babies. They are so happy! ❤
I have a golden rat tail cactus (cleistocactus winteri) and I adore it. Mine grows pups only at the base but also has tons of roots. Nice video, I love the update!
Wow this plant is doing fantastic! You're making me want one
Love a long term project video like this!! And what a freaking cool plant. I can’t believe all the roots for a cactus 😳
Those roots!!!! Omg! I loved this type of video, I found it really relaxing too. I can't believe how much new growth happened, the babies are so cute. I love the fact it looks crazy and weird and awkward, it's beautiful 😊❤🤗 hugs for you and Olive xxx
Just wanted to add that with my MTC I remove about 30% of the root system when I take cuttings and repot. Never had an issue.
Your soil mix looks so satisfying haha 🖤 That’s a cool cactus!
Thank you Natasha 🥰🥰
This is a pretty perfect repot for spooky season! It did look a lot like a spider by the end!
I have one that’s only got the single “tail” and I’ve been thinking of chopping it so I can have more grow from the base, your video has given me motivation to give it a go!
I knocked mine off shelf. I just stuck it back in. I didn't wait for it to calus over. It's good. Mine doesn't grow from base either.
Great video. I also have a monkey tail cactus and and keep them east so planning to do the same thing.
But they are in plastic pots top heavy. I added pebbles to keep balance. I need to get a few terracotta pot. I have east window normally but last year had them outside getting south and west sun and grew well.🤗🌵
After watching your video I need to think where the plant is going to be placed 🤔
Omg right!! I was so shocked at the amount of roots lol
I love this video ! Progress videos are the best ones! Thank you for sharing this whole process with us ❤
One of my favorite videos Fern. Love your weirdo plant. I recently got my monkey tail and found your video very timely. I am obsessed with my monkey tail. Hope it grows funky like yours.
The plant looks like Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons!!! 😂
Totally looked like a green hairy worm with eyeballs to me when you showed momma plant after the cuts. 😅
What a fun cactus! I love videos like this. Feel free to make more. 😁
I'm back rewatching on Nov 19 2023 because my props went to mush...and now I have no monkeytail 😣 just wanted to see what a beauty looks like..
What a beautiful plant! This is exciting, I’ve never rooted a cactus, this went extremely well!
WHAAAAT THAT MOMMA MONKEY TAIL WENT WILD WITH GROWTH!!! What!!! OMG!
Loved this video this gal is so real....Taking it as it goes being honest and humble thank you..!
I bought my first monkey tail this spring. I have enjoyed watching you. I see the first thing I need to do is get a better soil mix. I have to much soil in mine. One of the tails I bought actually got small! So I am trying to see what I can do to bring it back.
Thank you!!
Wow😱What an awesome project. I’d love one of these but I only have east and west facing windows, so don’t think it would get enough light.
I love this plant and it's funky nature. I say keep it growing and chop it in the spring
A fork works nicely to get a small plant out of the pot without pulling on your plant.
Perfect for "Spooky Season" you should decorate the pot.
I have one. Mine is small and a single stem...this spring/summer it has grown, however it's still to sm to cut. Yours is fantastic!
Your hair is so frigging cute! 25:57
This cements my desire to own a monkey tail cactus! Great video, really enjoyable to watch, and I can tell you worked hard on it.
this video was so awesome!!! thanks for all the effort you put in man, it seriously shows! the monkey tail cactus is looking so awesome and i can’t wait to see how it transforms over the years!!
Thank you so much Nina ☺️ I am excited to see how it grows over time, too!
I love that it looks like a spider! Perfect for spooky season lol
I think I saw something like this where I was a kid.
And I thought it was like... Dead and I said out loud : Mom those cactus must have seen better days.
How you guys Hanging? Hangy day today huh?
And almost everyone who was near then started to laugh and I was so confused 😭🤣
Looks amazing. So fun! Didn’t know I loved this plant, but now I know and have put it on my wish list!
This makes me so happy. Haha. I would be confused too on what to do with amount of root growth and such. Haha.
Holy craaaaap dude!!! Alllll the new growth!!!!!
Love the plant 🪴 😍 and I do like to see the process/growth over time. Thanks for sharing.
Omggf I love that your updating so much!!! I was just looking threw your old videos to watch one then I saw NEW UPLOAD! Yayyyy love u so much
Leave it and see what happens!
