I adored this book and am very curious for the political aspects to play out in the sequel. Awesome job with the map and talking about the world in a spoiler free way.

I am really happy you enjoyed the book. And yes, I want to see so much more politics and "big fishes" in the next book!

I don't have the habit to make dedicated reviews to a single book - too much work and not enough time. But sometimes I just feel the desire to do it. Especially when the book has not been reviewed 1000 times 😅

I completely agree with your evaluation! I also loved the world and characters, but felt that the plot was a little obvious. I'm definitely picking up the next installment when it's published, though I feel like we're basically going to get a completely new story, since this book's plot was wrapped up pretty neatly, imo. The thing I'm most interested in, is to learn more about the leviathans! Do you have any theories surrounding them?
    *slight spoilers ahead*
I'm wondering why they keep trying to breach the walls. On the map in the book, there's a straight 'titan's path' to the Lake of Khanum behind the second ring walls, so maybe they want to get there? Maybe they need to lay their eggs in the lake or something? I'd love to discuss this, or anything else you want to talk about :)

I definitely agree that in the next book we'll likely get a new villain of the day, though I do hope we get to see Anna deal with the Hazas.
      SPOILERS:
Okay, so I have some theories about the leviathans and some things that basically keep me up at night, related to them.
I do agree that there's definitely something in the empire that they want to get to, again because of the Titan's path. I can't say what it might be, but here are some facts:
      1. The leviathans have faces - "Did you know that some have the faces of men? Not atop their shoulders-for most leviathans have no shoulders-but hidden away, in their underbellies. Giant visages peering out at the world with wide, blind eyes, their mouths working silently and madly. Like some accidental growth.” I would like to emphasise "accidental growth".
2.. The Khanums were skilled Apoths (maybe even more than that) - Some evidence from the text: “Blessed Atir of the Khanum, they say, had altered herself so she could awake and sniff the air, and know the placement of every bird and beast and flower about her for a mile…” & “Those walls out there-some stretches are four hundred years old. Made back when the Khanum still walked these lands in full force. Planned and wrought and manned by ancient peoples, some of them far stranger than anything the Apoths could brew up now.”
      3. The leviathans never stop growing - according to the text, they get bigger and bigger with every wet season. But you know who else, never stops growing? Conzulates. According to the text, they "never age, and never stop growing. They grow and grow and grow. Some get to be about as big as houses-and just about as mobile-before they’re released from their service and given the sword.” (But how do we know they are given the sword? And what giant sword that might be?)
See where I'm going with this? I think that maybe, the Khanums were not the heroes that saved the world from the Leviathans, but the ones who created them, kind of like a failed Conzulate-eks experiment. And maybe the history of how the empire was created is not exactly correct.
Maybe the leviathans are looking for either revenge, or a way to die, or a way to escape their fate.
Or maybe I am completely wrong, but these random bits are just stuck in my head and I can't let go of the feeling that the history of the empire was a lie.
Sorry for the endless comment 😅

@@libraryunbounded Never any need to apologize for long comments -- there's nothing better than theorizing about interesting Fantasy 😄 Your theory is so good!! I never made the link between the Conzulates and the leviathan, that's really perceptive! I think what you're saying is super plausible. The leviathans could very well be magic gone wrong, either through experiments the Khanums did on others, or the magic they applied to themselves gotten out of hand. It still leaves the mystery of why they're trying to break through the walls now, though your speculations could all work. This is why I love talking to other readers -- it can lead to such intriguing insights! Thank you for sharing your theory!

Your “limited mapmaking skills” are fabulous.
I heard another reviewer mention how the worldbuilding (with the ringed city of walls and gigantic creatures trying to break through) reminded them of the manga/anime Attack on Titan. That dampened my anticipation, but your description of the Sherlock Holmes-Watson description has rekindled it somewhat.

Oh, thank you, you are too kind! :)
Well, I have not personally read or watched Attack on Titan, so I can't speak on that part. But the murder mystery atmosphere is pretty solid. Give it a try at least - I'm pretty sure you'll know in the first two chapters whether it's for you or not :)

@@justynajusty you know, as someone who has wished for the same and has had the chance to experience it, I can tell you that it gets old quickly.
The beauty of a hobby (and most things in general) is the longing to get to them. The looking forward to them. If we were free to do them all the time, we would exhaust our enthusiasm and they would eventually become unwanted.
So we need the "obstacles" on our way to reading, to be able to recharge the desire for it, just like reading recharges our strength to do everything else. 💖
(Sorry for the bootleg philosophy 😁)
