None of the stores where we shop carry Boar’s Head, a brand we only know from deli meats. Our favorite pickle is the refrigerated Claussen, also our favorite sauerkraut.
Not so much this time, but they often review brands that are only available in their little neck of New England. (They also assume that everybody cooks at sea level.) Claussen makes an awesome pickle. Personally, I would rank it similar to Boars Head, though Claussen is a couple dollars less.
There is a deli style Texas pickle that adds hot peppers to it that I think is the absolute BEST dill pickle on the market.... And I love pickles! I alwaya have a few different jars of them in my fridge.
Clearly they've also never had the Boar's Head. There's no competition those pickles are fantastic. I can't keep them in the fridge when I buy them because usually we've devoured them within 20 minutes. Before even clicking play I knew it would be those pickles soooooo good!
They have that look of "I am going to get something really good". All they got was 1/10 of a second on TV and a sour stomach from sampling a lot of pickles. lol
This test is now 4 years old, and there's at least one refrigerated newcomer: Grillo's. By far my favorite, but at $8/jar (with the most difficult-to-open packaging ever Invented) I only pick them up on sale. I'm trying to reverse-engineer them, using both white vinegar and brine for fermenting, which are listed as ingredients. The Grillos are definitely fermented, as they "fizz" when first opened (and their shelf in the grocer refrigerator is usually wet with leaks). Time for a refrigerated-only update!
5 years now and Grillo's has finally updated their packaging. I bought a container at Costco today and it now comes with a screw off lid. So I can now take my tools out of the kitchen.
I have not to my knowledge, tried the Boar’s Head brand pickle - however, I’m old enough to have bought. Fabulous Kosher (garlic) pickles out of a wooden barrel In delicatessens as a youngster - those were my favorites - a nickel bought a whole pickle - you picked it out (with tongs) and ate it on the way home from school. And I also agree with the comment below about Clausen’s brand - my go to pickle these days.
I absolutely love America's Test Kitchen but this time they really blew it. How could you not include Claussen in the tasting? They're hands down the best out there.
They DID include Claussen in the test. It came in a close second to the Boars Head. The taste test was done by Cook's Country 2015, and the complete test results are available on the Cook's Country Web site.
I spent almost $6 for a jar of Boar's Head and I almost felt like taking the product back to the store. They were not crisp and had no noticeable flavor. I bought a Lidl brand pack of pickle spears for close to $3 and those are de delicious!! Just thinking about it is making my mouth watery.
I saw America's Test Kitchen do a similar test years ago with 4 Brands. I think they had Boar's Head, Vlasic, Mt. Olive, and Claussen. Both Boar's Head and Claussen were the refrigerated types. Claussen was the clear winner back then, like 4 years ago or so when I saw it with the original guy that did the show on Saturdays. It's my favorite too and I prefer the whole pickle for the best crunch, but the spears absorb a little more flavor and still have some fresh crunch.
My dad used to take me to Tabachnik's in Livingston, NJ when I was little. I would stick my arm in this giant barrel and grab a whole kosher dill the size of my forearm! Today, Ralph's sells whole Boars Head kosher dills that come as close to the barrel flavor I remember from the 1960s! (dear God I'm old!)
I worked at a restaurant in the late 60's run by a Jewish gentleman. We garnish many meals with kosher dills taken from a huge wooden barrel. Those were the best pickles I've ever eaten. Next to them came my mother's homemade dills made in a large ceramic crockpot that we children would ask daily, "are the pickles ready yet." Up to a few years ago, I loved buying a brand named "Bubbles" from the refrigerated section.
My favorite dill pickle is Claussen's dill pickles. My favorite shelf pickle is Great Value,Walmart's store brand, hamburger dill chips. They are crisp and have a wonderful taste.
I'm thinking Mt Olive saw this segment and made some changes. I recently bought Mt Olive pickles at CostCo and they are amazingly crunchy but a bit vinegary. I love drinking pickle juice. It's like a glass of wine to me.
Only three brands tested? I would have preferred to see a tasting of all shelf stable pickles. And then a separate tasting of all refrigerated pickles (perhaps Boarshead vs Claussen vs BaTempte vs some of the newer brands I've seen in supermarket) Boarshead fresh vs canned pickles? Duh,.. its almost like Boarshead paid for the ad.
"Only three brands tested?" Actually they tested five brands. They only had her sample three of the five on air. The full test results are available on the Cook's Country Web site.
Spears are ALWAYS soft soggy nasty things I won't eat..why not just slice a whole pickle and avoid those flaccid spears?? I have a knife and I'm not afraid to use it!
Claussen has always been my favorite, but I have to grudgingly admit that Boar's Head has a *slight* edge over the Claussen. They're a bit more garlicky.
Totally agree with ATK. The refrigerated garlic pickles are the best. Having lived in NYC all my life, Claussen’s is to pickles as Wonderbread is to real bread. Just my opinion.
I don't know who is responsible for picking pickles :) on this program but they really should have taken a look at Ba'tampte. Pickles are great and they also have mustard and saurkraut. NO, I do not work for this company, I just come from the New York area and this is what most Jewish people eat when they are looking for a good pickle. thank you, thank you, thank you :)
Claussen and Boar's Head used to be my favorites until I found Bubbie's. I love naturally fermented pickles when snacking. If we're talking a cheeseburger, then I do prefer the Best Maid / Dell Dixie (did you know they're the same pickle?) for that particular taste they have that goes so well with greasy burgers.
Both America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country shows are just televised versions of recipes and products from back issues of their magazines, so....to those complaining about not mentioning the Claussen pickles, the actual magazine test for kosher dills listed Claussen as 1st runner up to Boar's Head. I like both pickles, and there's not a hugh difference between these two brands, but I definitely agree that Boar's Head pickles are the best I have ever eaten (but I would never turn down a Claussen--plus they're cheaper!).
You may want to expand the shelf-stable candidates and add Milwaukee’s Pickles! Theirs always beat Vlasucs & Mount Olive. Otherwise, it’s Claussens at our house.
What about batempes pickles don't know if I spelled that correctly but their crunchy garlic kosher pickles are great. Never saw boarshead pickles in my supermarket but will try to find them would go great with a nice hot pastrami sandwich
I agree with many here, Claussens. Mt. Olive pickles are available in my part of the country, and are also acceptable. And there are various store brands that have a good kosher dill spear, or whole dill. What's that one - Dave's Famous? Those are good too, and they have a hot spicy pickle.
You tasting tests seem east coast heavy. Granted it is a hassle to get brands that are not local, but those of us on the west coast or in the midwest would like to see some of our brands tested too.

Lol and as others pointed out shelf versus cooler nite and day. Do you or did you do a show on pickling pickles? If so...if not do one with CRISP GARLIC COLD PROCCESSED PICKLES PLEASE
I see a lot of comments about their pickle testing and not mentioning Claussen since they mentioned the winner, middle, and bottom ranking. And, both Claussen and Mt. Olive were runner ups. Straight from their website: RECOMMENDED Claussen Pickles, Kosher Dill Spears “Sweet,” “salty,” and “a little spicy,” this refrigerated product had the “familiar,” “classic” pickle profile. Tasters thought that these slender spears had “perfect crunch,” “crispy” skin, and “clean,” “fresh” flavor.
There is a jar of Claussen pickles to Jack's left but wasn't in the taste test. It is my very favorite kosher pickle. Did not realized that Boar's Head made pickles. I'll have to try it and do my own taste test against Claussen. ;)
The first jar of Claussen I bought, I swore I'd never buy anything else. The second jar I bought tasted like just cucumbers in water. They can be inconsistent, but they can be amazing. I hated Mt Olive; super super soft. I mostly buy baby dills because they're usually much more crisp than spears.
My fav are Puckered Pickle Company (from chicago)... don't see them at many stores but hands down the best. 2nd I'd pick Claussen pickles. I've never tried the boar's head pickles... don't think I've run across that yet.
Randall's carries Dietz and Watson brand products, which I believe is their store brand of deli items, and those pickles are great. We get the dill spears and the horseradish sweet slices. Also love the Vlassic farm style dills.
SERIOUSLY? After trying a wide variety of brands of the years (including all shown here-AND FAR MORE!), I think that VLASIC WHOLE DILLS or WHOLE BABY DILLS offer the best crunch, taste, and price-and they're SHELF-STABLE! Haven't looked back since. And I STAY AWAY from ALL PRE-CUT SPEARS! 😮
Claussen's pickles are the best for a garlic flavor. They have to be in the fridge to get crunchy. They're delicious. But I also love mt Olive equally. Sometimes I don't want all that garlic
I know ATK does tastings of nationally available products but Boar's Head must have a huge presence on the East coast. Most products here are only available at specialty markets which I am not willing to travel to.
I've always liked the Vlasik Spicy pickles but they're difficult to find but now that I know Boars Head makes pickles that is definitely going to be my top choice Un tried. All I know is I love their Pastrami!
Came to this comments section to voice my personal outrage at the lack of even a mention of Claussens. I'm glad to see I'm not alone.
Clausens are not fully developed pickles, they're still cucumbers and don't even qualify for this debate imo. 🥒
Yeah I also clicked for Clausenns. booo
I guess I would have preferred two surveys. One of shelf-stable pickles and one of refrigipickles.
They did say Mt. Olive was the best of the shelf stable.

If there is a Sprouts farmers market store near you, they carry Boar’s Head pickles.
same here in MidWest
I like Claussen pickles but, you know, now I've got to try their sauerkraut with some hot dogs...
What about the Claussens pickles?!
For real!!
@@NoWay-vz9xw America's Test Kitchen has offended my sensibilities.... I'm sad now
Claussen has been my personal favorite for more than 20 years. I keep experimenting on making my own, but, they NEVER turn out like Claussen.
Ditto. That's what I thought. I'm like how can they not test the Clausen! Demand another testing!
Me too! They have the jar of Clausen but didn’t even taste them. Bad taste test! Clausen is still my favorite!!!
Claussen was co-winner with boars head according to their website.
Claussen is the best pickle i ever had. i buy the halves. never had Boar's Head, but why idd you have Claussen's there and not even test it?
They did test it; it came in second.
I love Claussen mini dills! They are never in stock anymore.
SeikiBrian I wish they would have said that in the video. Where did you find that at?
There is a deli style Texas pickle that adds hot peppers to it that I think is the absolute BEST dill pickle on the market.... And I love pickles! I alwaya have a few different jars of them in my fridge.
I buy the sandwich slices and the spears and the halves and the minis and...
I turned my Dad on to the Claussen pickles when I was in college.
Quite the outrage from leaving out Claussen's. Touchy subject I guess...

I buy Claussen's so I can also drink the rest of the juice...it's SO good. I'll have to try the Boar's Head soon.
In previous tests with more samples the Claussens won. Not sure why they only tried these three this time.
Watch again claussen is there. Look at the jars on the right.

Yes! Tasty pickles but that lid totally sucks to open and has a sharp edge. If a person has delicate/thin skin it will cut you.
Spot on. I will buy Claussen's if I'm having company and grilling hamburgers and hotdogs, though.
