I probably paid between 5.50 and 12.50 for all the concerts that I saw at MSG when I was younger. And at the Schaefer and Dr. Pepper festivals in Central Park - 1.50 or 2.50 for orchestra seats. I saw so many legendary bands for those prices. It’s unbelievable!

Dynamic pricing is sketchy...but it's also economics. Price is driven up by demand. Live Nation does it because ticket demand supports it.
The Fender Custom Shop sells guitars through Casino Guitars at eye watering prices...because there is demand at those prices.
Springsteen, don't forget, never actually "got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company." He just wrote about it.

Last month I saw the Aristocrats ($28, small venue) and the Koch Marshall Trio ($15, bar). So two of the best guitarists on earth for under $50 total. And I got to hang out and chat with both bands and see them from like 10 feet away. Can't beat that.

General admission was awesome but. I just don’t go to concerts anymore. Tickets and it seems kinda like a hassle. I guess l am old but the best seat in the house for a concert is UA-cam for me alot of times. Big big bands are nice to see but young hungry bands are best. I saw GNR before Appetite broke out. I skipped school and ended up chilling and setting on the bus with RATT and talking gear with Warren. I even shared a beer with Cliff Burton setting the grass beside the bus. We never caused problems and the world was a better place. I’m thankful for my memories

Late 60's I saw Jeff Beck, Cream, the Dead, Airplane, Doors, Steve Miller, Quicksilver, you name it, all the big bands of the day for $2.50 to $3.50 a ticket. And as a teen I could afford it even then. It was about the same price as the vinyl LP. And parking was free almost everywhere. I can't remember what I paid to see SRV, but it was less than $10 and again we could just walk up to the stage and reach out and touch him. You could even chat these guys up. Fun times!

I was accepting of Dynamic Pricing when I was looking to see a Broadway show in NY. I kinda get it. They play on the demand market to have more consistent revenue. Getting higher prices for the good seats on the weekend to make up for the low prices on a bad seat on a weekday to make sure it's not an empty show. But those shows have a long residency in one spot. If you don't get the seat at a price you want, try a different day.
Concerts are a one time shot. Like he's only playing in Houston on one day and may never be back again. To get priced out based on "dynamic pricing" is just bullshit in that scenario. Name your price and let every one have at it.

Just experienced this with the Chili Peppers. Great show, but was really expensive compared to the stadium base price in BOA stadium. I don't go to concerts often, so I enjoyed it for seeing a band I really enjoy. However, this pricing structure definitely makes me far less likely to see other bands I may like but not be as familiar with. I like to play music, so it's not the end of the world for me. I really enjoyed seeing a group of seasoned musicians with great chemistry play an amazing performance. Just wish it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg to do so.

I've had experiences booking shows where I float my rates and they're accepted quickly and could have gotten more, which as a musician is always desired, so the idea of dynamic pricing, on a smaller scale, sounds awesome. But horrible when they balloon up to $800 a ticket.

A big thing that has changed is that, touring "used" to be about promoting an album by the band. Record labels saw - and funded - touring as a promotional expense. Nowadays touring "is" the main income source for the record label, band and everyone around them. This gives Live Nation and similar promoters/ticket sellers massive power, so they can charge what they want regardless of what the artist might say, because the artist is no longer the sole beneficiary from tour receipts. With legacy artists as huge as Springsteen, they will have much more say of course and take a bigger cut, but even mid range up and coming artists have to march to the drum of the promoters and ticket agencies. I remember working with bands playing 5k venues in early 2000s and even then, they had no say on the price of the ticket which was set by the promoter. End result is, for me at least, I won't be going to see much live music anymore at these crazy prices. Hey ho, good old capitalism and monopolies and the fabled "free market" lol :)

My sister got Springsteen tickets in Buffalo for 150 on the morning of the release. They have cut out the middle man just like the pro sports owners have via psl’s and seat geek. Ticketmaster is the devil and an artist like springsteen has no other choice because the demand for his tickets is higher than any other artist and has been for 50 years. I paid over 150 a ticket for the reunion tour in 99 in multiple cities. Dynamic pricing is awful and it has been sold the artists as a way to avoid scalping. Pearl Jam and springsteen have tried to stop scalping but there is no way to do it so this is the end game, Ticketmaster becomes the scalper…again this is exactly like nfl owners deal with seat geek and forcing psl’s on season tickets holders.

Easy to fix. The fans need to sacrifice two or three tours of major groups, be they the boss, the chilli peppers, GnR, or who ever. After the groups make huge losses on a few tours maybe they will get the message and put pressure on the ticket sellers. After all, individual fans have no power but maybe the group’s management do. In the end money talks.
Also, I always thought that the roots of rock and roll were sticking it to the man, not bending over for them.
    £1000 for a ticket! I wouldn’t need a seat, I wouldn’t be able to sit down anyway!

People may not like it, but the fact that scalping is a thing is because often tickets are priced lower than the market allows. People may think it's unfair for those with less money to get priced out of seeing some concerts, but you might as well argue that it's unfair to get priced out of owning a Mercedes, or for that matter a Gibson. Supply and demand.

I see both sides of this. When younger I'd wait on line all morning for tickets. If you did not want to spend your morning on line you could buy scalped tickets at multiples of the list price. Many bands have tried to limit bulk ticket purchases by scalpers or try methods of making scalping unprofitable. I can see charging what the market will bear but the band should be willing to keep adding dates until the market price comes down to a reasonable sum. If Bruce wanted to really project the working man image he could have 10 or 12 nights at MSG instead of 2. Hard on the Band better for the fan. Me I skip the big shows and am making an effort to see lots of smaller acts. In the last year Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Mary Gauthier, Tommy Emmanuel, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, The Other Favorites, Bela Fleck, Bob Dylan, Yuga Wang and I'm sure I'm missing a few. Never spending over $100.

Now if I want Premium V.I.P. for Bonnaroo all 4 days only starting at $3,500 then I found the add ons like the "world's longest salad". That in it self is worth the price of admission. Long story short, sorry Vulfpeck I think I'd rather buy a guitar from Casino Guitars and give them the $3,500 + my $20 for the long Salad! We could ask Cory if I'm Wong... 😅🏁🍾

This is just how economics works. If there's a limited quantity and high demand then the price goes way up. If you sell below what the market says the tickets are actually worth then someone is going to buy them and re-sell for that high price. You can complain all you want but the high price is unavoidable unless these artists want to do 3 or 4 times as many shows.

I've probably seen about 80 concerts in my life. First show was Def Leppard in 1984. About 13.00 Billy Joel same year, about 17.00, ACDC following year, 17.00. And keep in mind, maybe not the same visual spectacle, but these guys were in their prime. This 3-400.00 per ticket is b.s. The problem is, if we, the stupid fans continue to pay it, we have nobody else to blame.

I go to heavy metal and alternative rock shows, most of them are at small to medium size venues in the UK, i might avoid arena shows if ticketmaster continues dynamic pricing and if the price is more than reasonable, somebody like Bruce Springsteen, a lot of his fanbase will be people from a working class background who will be seriously priced out of his shows unfortunately, but can't it help if an artist of his level of popularity, there is a big demand for him, but cliche as it is, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it

Concert prices are ridiculous anymore. Most of these bands don't even have an opener who they're paying either. Even my favorite bands that are doing shows alone, yeah I love them and I wish I could go see them, but it's not worth the price of a ticket these days unless you don't mind the nosebleed section or the lawn area way in the back. Alot of touring bands missed out on alot of money over CoVid ,so I'm sure they're trying to recoup lost wages of over two years, but this is taking it too far. Parking at these shows too is up 50% in many cities and the fees on top of the ticket price is just a second and third kick in the nuts

Dynamic pricing is actually a better reflection of market value than ticket face value (they probably need to put a cap in the algorithm)
A concert is an event that exists at one point in time, so it is by nature limited in supply. We'd all love ticket prices to stay low, but then the only factor in who gets tickets to a high demand show is who logs in to the online queue at the right right time (and beats out the secondary market bots; another problem).
The bigger problem is that Ticketmaster/Live Nation have a vertical and horizontal monopoly in the US. In Europe, there are at least two ticket vendors for each show and venue, so there is actual competition to keep things in check, thus you have generally lower ticket prices on average than the US shows. Also, I think there must be better protections against reseller bots, as concerts don't sell out right away nearly as often (though coincidentally, I couldn't get Springsteen tickets for next year in Germany after logging in a few minutes late, no dynamic pricing for that one).
And right on with buying last second tickets. Scored same day Elton John tickets on a whim.

    • @davidevans3175
      @davidevans3175 Рік тому

That's what all monopolies say. Monopolies are broken up because of the adverse effect on the consumer. The consumer is more important than the rock star or concert promoter. Live Nation are sitting ducks for an anti-trust lawsuit. So is Mr. Blue Collar "Down-by the dynamo" Springsteen.

The scammer argument is BS. It implies that everyone buying tickets n a non-dynamic scenario is looking to flip them for profit? No! I've been to many, many concerts and always bought tickets for myself or friends so we could enjoy the show. So now everyone has to pay scammer prices for their tickets? Screw 'em. Seen Bruce many times but never again. The rich just keep getting richer.

311, who I’ve seen about 15-20 times in my life, and who has toured continuously every year and every summer since the early 90s (except 98), always had reasonable prices, especially back in the day. They’ve been my favorite band since I was about 11 years old, always preached a message of Unity and positivity, and had killer music to boot.
3 of them have become increasingly brainwashed by Hollywood influences over the years, so of course, in 2022, the drummer, who was on truth social and trying to stay true to himself and his values (but also brainwashed to some extent) have gotten into an a spat that has caused the Bassist Pnut to call it quits after 30 years, or at least “take a break after he fulfills his tour obligations”.
My homeboy at work, who makes way more $ than I do, is also a huge 311, naturally he broke the news to me, and we decided to go see them for what will definitely be my last show. Well needless to say, tickets have been sold out and not worth pursuing at certain out of state venues, and he finally talked me into flying to Chicago and getting tickets in the VIP section (he had to pester them to sell us the tickets).it was $420 just for the ticket. Luckily I’m flying there for free, but still, $420, when I saw them in San Antonio this spring for $75. I’m still a little bothered by that price tag, but I told myself it’s the last time I’ll see them, so might as well do it.
To be honest, they still play and sound amazing, but their sets have become shorter, they play less and less of their the deep cuts and b-sides and play almost entirely crowd pleaser casual fan songs, of which they have many. Their new albums have other people writing the songs, and as much as I love them as musicians and people, after this show, I might have to move on emotionally. I’ll always love 311 for what they’ve given me over the years, but it’s time for a this dead horse to stop being beaten.
Ticketmaster should be ashamed of themselves, I personally won’t be going to many shows that are Ticketmaster-level acts after this, only a rare few, and once all these legacy acts die off and stop touring, I hope the new generation of bands can either play exclusively smaller venues or cut Ticketmaster out of the loop entirely, they’re an evil business that deserves to go bankrupt.
Sorry for the long comment, Bax and Johnny, love you guys!
