My grandpa had a blacksmith shop on his farm , he had a old massey-harris tractor that he used to run the trip hammer and a saw mill . He just back the tractor up and throw a belt over the PTO and onto the machine and there you go . I think the only electricity he used was to run a fan that he had a connected to the forge , that originally came with the a foot-operated air pump .

How exciting to finally get a classic tool that most new blacksmiths lust after! I will be very interested in learning how the concrete under it holds up; rumor has it that less than several feet deep results in cracking. Forge on!

Yep that’s a good one I think you’ll have many years of work with that nice update on the spider to mine has wood on it which you have to replace every couple years give me a call and we can talk about the adjustment of your head spacing or hammerhead spacing makes it even harder

I agree with you calling it a power hammer because that’s what it is, without getting all technical. Forging times are going to be so much longer now. Presses move material super fast along with robbing the heat. Congrats Elijah, looking forward to seeing it in use.

Lead, tin, copper, antimony......equals babbit.....components vary according to individuals preference...Loggers and Construction Men used a lot of it ..one Ol' Boy has preferences 90 degrees from another ......go figure. My 52 chev PU had Babbit bearings.....and held up to a 16 year old foot for several years......but that is another story.....

@FireCreekForge, I am out in Montana and looking at buying a 1901 -100lbs compress, 3,000lbs weight Little Giant Power Hammer. Is there anything I should know before purchasing?
In general I would look at how much wear is on the machine. Some were used a little, others worn out. Some have been rebuilt, and some need to be rebuilt. Some I expect are beyond rebuilding. All these factor into whether you buy that machine and at what price. The main bearings are babbit and are designed to be re-poured as needed, but the other pivots and joints are steel on steel and lubricated during use, but with extensive wear would be much more involved to repair. It may be worth reaching out to Little Giant, they have a website and offer some parts as well as advice, support, and original manufacture and delivery records on the hammers so you can learn as much as possible.
@@FireCreekForge You are the man! Thank you for firing back so fast. I am headed today to go look at it so I don't want to drop too many details unless it gets snatched out from under me. There isn't a lot of blacksmith tools that stay on the market here very long. Still a bunch of ranchers out here. Apparently the guy selling has original records from like 1902, shipped over on the Great Norther Railway to a large rancher. I know you are from Idaho, so I bet you would appreciate the history. Anyway, I will send you a message when I shoot the video. I have already watched yours an Will Stelters a few times. I'm pretty excited and hope it runs.
I think the term is power hammer
It says trip hammer on it, I imagine either term applies...
Alan speedy it’s a trip style power hammer , but no need to get technical both terms work
@@FireCreekForge A trip hammer doesn't have a clutch. When it's 'tripped' a dog is engaged to drive it. You can't make any variation on the force of the hit. The power hammer replaced them but the term lingers on.
@@maplebones not trying disagree with you, your explanation sounds correct, but the words "trip hammer" are cast on the flywheel of my Little Giant hammer, maybe the term was used differently back then.
