  • In the annals of science fiction TV, there is a short list of series that always get mentioned: Star Trek, The X-Files, and of course, The Twilight Zone.
But there is one series that ran for five years in the late 1990s that is deserving of an honoured place on that list. It is frequently forgotten because, until recently, no major streaming venue carried the series. But now that it is being seen by a new generation of science fiction fans, it will hopefully receive the renewed appreciation it deserves.
So let’s talk about 10 Incredible Things About Babylon 5.
This list was scripted by the amazing @ckvanderkaay you can find him and more of his work over on the Twitter!

Yes, a tech hierarchy makes for more storytelling possibilities. After watching hundreds of hours of Star trek and dozens of hours of Star Wars, I still can't tell who has better technology in those genres. I feel like Star Trek in particular sells the Federation short vs the Klingons and such.

One of my favourite things about B5 was that it felt like an ancient, lived in galaxy. In Star Trek most of the races always seemed to be at a similar level of technological development, but in B5 you had young, old and ancient races. The Minbari were space faring 1000 years before humans and almost wiped us out in the Earth-Minbari war, and the Vorlons and Shadows were so old they were the literal 'angels' and 'demons' from other races myths and religions.

I would really recommend you the universe of Mass Effect, which is basically the spiritual successor of B5. Even though it is a game, and not TV.
It feels like an organic, living universe with a history, even more than B5. Even its recent, written, and well documented history spans over 2-3000 years. It features space station which was originally built 50k years ago, then abandoned, repopulated, rebuilt and extended many times. It has a planet with no written history, no life, but signs of large scale orbital bombardment a million year ago, with no idea what happened there exactly. Another planet which is used as a junkyard for thousands of years, and now covered with wrecked spaceships, many with unknown origins from unknown extinct species. One planet has a huge canyon (visible from space), which turns out to be from a mass accelerator weapon firing at “something”, 37millions years ago.
It really feels like there is a galaxy wide economy going on, with private companies, colonies, politics, criminals, fortune seekers and so on. And a history which fades into the distant past. A lots of things are going there even before humanity arrives, where we just appear as a sidenote in the grand scheme of things.

Fun fact about the CGI animation: When the show was broadcast starting in the early nineties, high definition was just a pipe dream and we were limited to just 480i resolution on TV. That "i" stands for interlaced. Each frame of picture was comprised of 240 alternating lines. USUALLY, those lines would be of the same image...BUT the animators realized they could take advantage of the format and rendered at 60 FIELDS per second. This meant that the animation looked INCREDIBLY fluid and detailed during the original broadcast on our old CRT sets...but it also meant that when it came to DVD, the rendering method did NOT translate well and resulted in the blurry mess we got previous to the new remasters...even there, it's not the same look and feel as what we originally got. The best solution would be to completely re-render the scenes, but unfortunately, the data files weren't saved and were lost almost completely.
Additional fun fact: Because the original data was lost, when JMS went to create "The Lost Tales", he didn't have some of the starship models he needed. He turned to the fan community online and the fans helped him with fan created, show accurate models, which he then used in the movie.

    • @hackerx7329
      @hackerx7329 3 роки тому

A minor glimmer of hope there. It turns out chunks of the files are available because people that worked on the show kept their own copies so in effect we have backups of at least some of the data files. I doubt anybody has enough to just rerender the show exactly with zero work but I'd almost bet that they have almost all the ship models and would just have to recreate the scenes and render them. The bigger challenge would be the shots with compositing.

Have the box set and can agree on the CGI dvd quality. According to what I have read online the original live action footage was shot on 35mm film in a 16:9 aspect ratio to future proof the series (would do 4k wide screen no problem). The makers knew that wide screen was the future so shot it in that format. The CGI was rendered in the 4:3 format, Warner who financed it in the 90's didn't want to pay the extra $30k per episode to have the CGI done in 16:9 (more screen space) as no one at that time had a wide screen TV. Jump forward 30 yrs the live action scenes are still fine due to the film used but the CGI and mixed scenes have to be stretched and cropped to fit the widescreen aspect ratio, so looks poor. The ironic thing is the animators passed the files regarding the CGI to Warner so it could be re rendered in the 16:9 format. What did Warner do? Lose them..

The epic atmosphere that humans as a young race play only one part in a mythical conflict that goes on for uncountable millenia. The rangers of B5 are obviously inspired by the rangers of LOTR, which would make the Minbari similar to the elves. Zahadum equals Mordor with its ancient shadows lurking from a time long forgotten and their return disbelieved by many at first. There're so many similiarities that it would fill hours of youtube videos too, I think. Yet B5 is so unique even today. I love it!

To those of you who may never have read the books, the Lensman saga, written by E E Doc Smith back in the 30s-40s, is one of the primary inspirations behind B5. JMS is a huge fan of Doc Smith's sprawling space opera epic, and he pinched more than little bit of ideas from the grandmaster. Vorlons = Arisians, Shadows = Eddore. Rangers = non-Lensed Galactic Patrol members. If you've lived your life thus far without reading the Lensman saga by E E Smith, you're missing out on the LoTR of pulp sci fi. If it's a sci fi trope, there's a good chance it originated with Doc Smith's stories. You owe it to yourself to read them. Galactic Patrol, Gray Lensman, Second-Stage Lensman, and finally Children of the Lens. Triplanetary and First Lensman are prequels written after the main saga, sort of like how Lucas made the prequels after the OT.

This wasn't a budget thing - JMS just designed the production that way. They never went over budget. Firefly was canceled because Whedon was doubling or tripling his budget on every episode. Over on DS9, Terry Farrell had 18-20 hour days almost every day, in part thanks to her make-up, which was basically hand done every day.

The 11th incredible thing about "Babylon 5," which should actually have been the #1 point of all this, is the phenomenal cast of the show. I know some of the cast is mentioned throughout this video, like Bill Mumy, Patricia Tallman, and Michael O'Hare, but that's just skimming the surface. Writing is one thing, and JMS did an absolutely fantastic job with the entire story. But it would be nothing without the cast. Especially Peter Jurasik as Londo and especially the late, great Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar. "B5" is the story of "the last, best hope for peace," and that entire concept was embodied in the storyline of Londo and G'Kar. Absolutely incredible, all of them. I wish Andreas and all who have passed beyond the rim with him (Richard Biggs, Mira Furlan, Jerry Doyle, Stephen Furst, etc.) were still with us. I will never, ever tire of this show. Babylon 5 is one of the most Science'y SciFi shows out there. Not only Star Furies was picked up by NASA, but the gravity on the station makes sense, it also shows some of the ides of Tsiolkovskiy regarding cosmic evolution (Deconstruction of fallen stars), even the concept of Hyperspace is possible according to string theory.

An underrated hidden gem of a show. Loved it back in the 90s. Great characters and actors who portrayed them. Unfortunately in the 20 plus years since it finished.about 7 or 8 actors who played major parts have passed away.

I love both Star Trek and B5, however, I so wish they were able to keep model miniatures throughout the shows. I know CG is cheaper, more convinient, and has come fairly close to real models in recent years, but nothing beats well done physical shots. It says a lot that the Refit Enterprise from TMP and the Ent-E from First Contact hold up better than almost anything else.

Pure CGI effects tend to age way, way worse too. I don't mind B5's effects looking dated though. Seeing them always brings me back to how amazing they were at the time.

Whenever I try to get across why the show is awesome in the shortest amount of time I show people 3 clips: first is the clip of the human suing one of the traditional "grey" aliens for the alleged abduction of his human ancestor on Earth several hundred years ago to get across the out-there story telling an humor. Second is really any of the Narn vs Shadow fleet battles to show the amazing tense action sequences, and last is the scene with Vir and G'kar on the elevator to showcase the powerful emotion's the show can evoke. Stargate, Deep Space 9, and Babylon 5 are truly fantastic one of a kind shows that will never come again...

When I was a Network and Unix admin for UC Riverside in the 90's I had a dual channel ISDN circuit (fast 144 kbps LOL) direct from my home to the University. I was on the newsgroups and remember the posts from Straczynski. My older brother had an editing studio and I convinced him to get the Video Toaster.. Ahh, those were the days.

B5 one of my all time favorite sci-fi shows (even if I couldn't stand Commander Shinclare in s1) The character development was so great and fare reaching. It was also fun to sit seasons later sometime and FINALLY being able to put together the parts of what had happened before.. season 1 episode 20 "Babylon Squared" being revealed in season 3's two parter War with out end (16 and 17) it's really made you think about every little thing and how it might tie in later.

Always maintain the difference between the 2 universes is primarily the utopian vision of humanity in Star Trek contrasted starkly with the humans of B5, who were characterized as actual people with human flaws that in Star Trek were generally reserved for the alien cultures, like Ferengi greed for example.

Great top 10 list. While JMS is awesome and a really good man, credit needs to go to the staff and producers for getting so many big names to star in this "little sci fi" show. Stephen Furst, who played Flounder in "Animal House", Andreas Katsulas, who starred in "Next of Kin" with Patrick Swayze, at least 2 Star Trek series and "The Fugitive" with Harrison Ford, Bruce Boxleitner and his wife at the time Melissa Gilbert. All big name actors at the time that took a chance on this show. Even the supporting cast are all well known actors of sci fi.
