My friend just gave me a very ugly dying bromeliad. I’ve never had bromeliads before so was wondering how I could revive it. Thank you for this information! There IS hope!
You can, plant it in a pot with some compost/sand in the bottom so she can have the pot hold her up. Plant her in that shallow soil. Keep moist but not soggy. Leave in shade. Takes a couple of months but they will pop up.
Yes I just noticed this recently, I put the dying momma's in a cardboard box, with the leaves coming out of the top of the box. Water them now and again and if they have little nodes at all, they will grow. Also small pups on their own can survive.
Thanks so much.she surprised me while lying in my pool gravel.Ihave cut her dead leaves back so much she may be ruined but I am going to keep the pup and what is left as long as she shows any signs of growth ❤
I am so happy that the information I shared in this video was beneficial for you. My motto has always been...the more that we know...the more that we can grow. Happy Growing!
This is my most favorite plant..I bought one this summer and it had 3 nice size pups ! So I cleaned the mommie plant up..refreshed her soil..and she is producing 2 more now ! I had also pitched another bromeliad and she has 2 very small pups peeking out ! So excited ! I want to learn how to grow them out of the soil... Great video !!
Thanks for the great video. I'm definitely going to be doing this to one of my dying mamas. Quick question - at 4:25, you were showing pups you were growing from a dead mama, and the two on the right were growing elongated and skinny. I have a mama that's growing a couple of pups like this. Is there something I can do to get the elongated pups to thicken and grow more typically?
I've had one of these abandoned to my care for about 10 years. It bloomed twice. It was in a nice pot. Wanted the pot back so I dug it out, divvied it out to 3 generic empty pots pots into a well-placed spot soon to become an awesome hedge! I kinda got the bug for this plant now. Great video and my "like" boosted you (deservedly) to 1K. Subscribed for more. :)
I did not know Bromeliads were semi-terrestial until I saw the actual root condition In your former video. It is why I mounted that one you sent me. Doing very well. New growth is coming on and should be nice with the brassavola and encyclia. Let them mix. I am fine with that. All on one mount! Nice second to hold drinks. Please do a Garden Tour Highliting blooms!
Yes there are many broms that go both way while there are others that are strictly one way or the other...such as your cryptanthus variety that are true terrestrial and would not survive without media. The one that you got from me is a neoregelia and can be mounted or potted. They are not picky at all. I am hoping you got some pups from it and it has continued to grow well with your mounted orchids!
I decided to try something like this before I saw your video. Noticed life coming from the mama plant I thought might be dead and am waiting for pups to show now!! 😉
That is awesome news!!! Congrats on your baby pups!!! ...and yes don’t be so quick to throw mama away...she may have enough energy to push out more pups!!! The more the merrier in my book and always a great way to get the most bang for your buckeroonies! Thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING!!! :)
U r truly the orchid doc...(brom)💯..iv'e learned so much fr u, i dare to tell u i got 2 broms sooo big, bloomed last yr..so,im going to my garden like a.s.a.p.thanks gurl🤗
Ha ha ha! The plant doctor is in! LOL! I have to credit the knowledge that I've learned due to my curiosity of plant life and their miraculous ability to thrive and flourish. They inspire me daily with how well they can cope and adapt and how they constantly never cease to amaze! They are miraculous at transforming my world inside and out and truly beautifying my life on many levels. I am so glad that I am able to share the inspiration that I've received and continue the beautifying cycle! I am even more thrilled that you have benefitted in my plant growing adventures where I can only hope it has enriched you in your ability to enjoy the journey. HAPPY GROWING MY DEAR FRIEND...and I am hoping lots and lots of bromeliad babies for you!
Orchid Diva aren’t they just amazing!!! I’m one that believes that nothing should go to waste and the more the merrier. There is always an empty spot or another arrangement that they can add their tropical beauty to, not to mention can save you a lot of money as well. I am hoping you can use this information to your advantage and will be useful in your propagation adventures! HAPPY GROWING MY DEAR! 🤗🦋🌹🌺🌸💐
Tammy Swauger I love bromeliads because they multiply like crazy. Once you have one, you should never have to buy another one of that type again. Thanks for watching dear! :)
Maggie Caceres and it is so awesome to see you!!! Thanks for watching and stopping by my garden for a visit! I am hoping all is well with you and wishing you the best! HAPPY GROWING!🌺🌸🦋🌹🌼💐
I think that if you trimmed back the "dying mommas" foliage, not to the root but cut back to where she still cups some food and water. Then no energy is wasted trying to maintain the dying foliage. All of her energy that she gathers from her core functions of gathering nutrients and creative life energy, will be more narrowly dedicated to sustaining her species via propagation. Again instead of supporting what's left of her. Kind of like when you do big trimmings or sculpting to bonsai, where a significant amount of foliage is removed. You would also cut back the roots. Because the tree no longer need as many roots to sustain the lesser amount of branches and foliage. If not trimmed, the roots would likely die back anyway, just because of the tree trying to find balance in itself. But then you run the risk of decay and root rot infecting the parts of the tree you meant to keep. So it is better to just remove a percentage of the trees roots, based on the percentage of reduction of the foliage removed. And instead have it use its energy in struggling to grow new roots, rather than using that same energy struggling at fighting root rot and decay under the soil. As well then you've already allowed death to creep in. In this case natural death has already arrived. So why not give all of its life energy to new life...
Hey PhalPal Maria, I’m just saying!!!! Another great video. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait to show you my house plants. Happy Growing from your PhalPal Durrell
This is very helpful! I got a brom from work that they said was no longer useful. It still had some colour so I kept it but then it started to rot and die in the center. I pulled that part out and now it has 3 pups! Can I trim mama’s leaves shorter without causing damage to the core?
Awesome and so glad to hear it. You can definitely trim the leaves back on mama. The energy source is the stem or rhizome area. I’ve had mamas completely die back and just as long as you have a healthy stem/rhizome it has the potential of growing more pups. Thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING!
Do you just keep water in the bucket with the dying pup or will that rot the roots ? Also I just bought osmocoat slow relapse fertilize for my new pup I bought . It says spring and fall but should I add fertilizer to the top now ?
Recently re-added a dyckia to my collection, weird thing that made me need it, it pupped without flowering. (It has an unusual life cycle for its kind, so it must be a genetic mutation.)
Eccentric Nature I agree! Plants are FREAKING AMAZING! They have an incredible way of adapting to what ever predicament they may find themselves in and have such an incredible will to survive. Not to mention they are so loving, forgiving and always eager to please! I just love them!
Ha ha ha!!!! You’re so awesome! I am so happy to have you join me on my plant adventures! Wishing you the absolute best in your adventures! Happy Growing!
Curious I have a bromeliad that disconnected from the rizome is there a way to save the bromeliad and get it to produce roots??? It looks pretty good overall but for some reason it fell over and didn’t wanna stay connected to the rizome root :(
Ελένη Καραβ Awwwwwww you spent time with the grandkiddies!!! I bet they ran you rugged!!! 😂 ...and you enjoyed every moment! My grandson just went back home and we miss him so much already. I cried like a baby when he left. 😭🤧😰

Thanks I am just starting with bromeliads and would have thrown mama away after the first batch of pups. So years later still good advice.
Great information. I love bromeliads and have a few now soon to be many. Keep producing these great videos.

Makes sense mamas are willing to keep going to keep their babies alive and well even if they are on the brink of death plant or animal alike

Hi. 🤩👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank u for showing. Can butterfly plant use d same method?
Should I transfer my dying plant to a larger pot to get more of the pups?
Nice job lady
Curious I have a bromeliad that disconnected from the rizome is there a way to save the bromeliad and get it to produce roots??? It looks pretty good overall but for some reason it fell over and didn’t wanna stay connected to the rizome root :(
❤️
Do you use cactus soil too ???
How do you take the pups off of the main Mamma?
It’s really simple...just a little twist and pull and it will do the trick. Sometimes they will even fall off at a simple accidental nudge.
What soil medium use for bromeliad growing
Plz mam can you tell me in what sibstance I can plant my bromeliad Im a biginner. I lived a tropical country plz help mam.
My bromeliads has no roots already can it still hava a baby pups?
Yes if it has a good stem area. That is where the pups come off of. You will see little bumps forming that will eventually grow into a a pup.
