    06:23 - *_"To get out of the approach mode you have to de-select the ILS frequencies, or disengage the AP and turn off both flight directors"._*
    I have always been under the impression that while you can't just press APP again to get out the the approach mode, pressing other modes on the MCP such as HDG or LVL CHG would do the trick. Tried it. And nope, won't do it.
    Always learning something new here, great channel.

      There is third way to get out of approach mode as well - press TO/GA. But TO/GA logic in different stages of Auto/Manual flight is another story..

      Prior to 1500', HDG or LVL CHG or APP mode pushing again is O.K to get out of APP mode, but blow 1500' you should use TO/GA or Auto pilot disengage and F/Ds off then ON.

    I haven't watched it yet, but let me try to guess the content (as a not-Boeing guy) : The lights don't indicate what modes are actually active and people should start looking at their FMA's.

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  26 днів тому +2

      The latter part for sure - but the actual meaning of the lights is an interesting one as well!

    Hi.
    I have just checked PMDG 777 in P3D and it looks to me that not all Boeing models have the same logic. Indeed in B777 when LNAV and VNAV buttons are armed on the ground and lit green second push of these buttons disarms the chosen mode. However, once HDG Hold is pressed and green (after the first push is already armed), no matter how many times I try to push that button HDG Hold remains active. It changes only when HDG SEL is pressed. Same with ALT HOLD and V/S mode changes only when you press V/S in ALT HOLD and ALT HOLD if you are in V/S. Pushing the second time AP also does not disengage autopilot. Once you press AP it remains green until AP disengaged button is pressed on a yoke. When you press LNAV on the ground (arm LNAV mode) it is lighted green and it remains green during takeoff and after takeoff it is green and you cannot switch it off by pressing the another time LNAV button. Based on PMDG B777 model it looks to me that if a given button on MCP is illuminated green, pushing a second time that switch will remove the green light only if that mode is armed and not active. Once a given mode becomes active it can't be switched off by pressing second time that switch. You have to select another mode to do it. So either B777 logic is a bit different or PMDG made a lot of mistakes in their B777 model :).
    I also checked an official B777 FCOM and e.g. for LNAV light it is stated: "LNAV Light Illuminated (green) - the LNAV mode is armed or engaged.
    LNAV is disengaged: • by selecting heading hold (HDG HOLD) or track hold (TRK HOLD) • by selecting heading select (HDG SEL) or track select (TRK SEL) • when the localizer captures • if there is a dual FMC failure (LNAV may be re-engaged if there is an active CDU ALTN NAV route available). LNAV is disarmed by pushing the LNAV switch a second time, or by arming LOC or APP.
    "
    Generally, B777 FCOM says that a green light on a given MCP button means that the corresponding mode is either armed or engaged. Then to check if it is armed or engaged you have to look at PFD.

    Decades ago I was up to exam in a simulator (Boeing Seattle) in avionics. (licensed tech).
    Instructor pointed at AP button - Tell me what this is.
    I told him everything I knew about the system -
    - Not the answer I am looking for.
    I continued to talk about the system, not sure what he wanted to know.
    Again -
    - Not the answer I am looking for......
    Finally I gave up.
    - Correct answer is, you can deselect it.

  • @MtheHell
    @MtheHell 25 днів тому

    The FMA is "underrated" by some simmers. But there is a reason why it is on top of the PRIMARY Flight Display (PFD).
    The MCP is for the choice, what you WANT the aircraft to do, and the FMA is showing what the aircraft IS doing right now.
    That's why all readbacks/callouts by the PM are done only from the FMA, not from the MCP.
    The same goes for Airbus, when you hear (example) "Man Flex 63, SRS, Runway, Autothrust blue" in the T/O roll, that is exactly what the FMA is showing.

    Interesting information as usual but I have to be honest and admit I’ve not flown 737 for many months now. Checking the modes in the PFD is the only thing I believe BUT in Fsim there could still be bugs 😅. Did not know about disabling approach mode. So what happens in real life if you need to do an emergency go around while in approach mode ? Does engaging to/ga disable the mode, I carnt see pilots fiddling with radios at such a high workload time ?
    I’m sure you have a video on it 😂

    I only knew this because I heard u say it before. It’s very unintuitive especially coming from an airbus. Would make more sense to me to have an armed (white?) color and an engaged (green) color or something. Then again I’m not a freaking Boeing engineer so don’t mind me haha

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  25 днів тому

      Armed white and green engaged is indeed exactly what Boeing uses on the FMA.
      According to the EASA and FAA Color coding standards, green is the correct color here because according to normal system behavior, pressing that button will disengage the mode.
      I know it’s counterintuitive, but according EASA and FAA standards, green is the correct color.
