Restoration of Old Rusty Socket Set Toolbox - WOODEN Insert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 чер 2024
- In this video I restore an old rusty Continental American socket set box. The ratchet and sockets are 1/4 inch drive and made in Japan. Fortunately, the box did an amazing job at protecting the tools and they only needed a minor polishing. I attempted to powder coat the box blue, but it didn't work out. The blue powder coat was a candy clear coat meant for chrome objects, so instead I went with green. I also created a custom wooden tray to replace the cheap plastic tray.
I hope you guys enjoy, if you do leave a like and a comment. Subscribe if you would like to see more awesome content ;).

When I die you’re more than welcome to bring ME back to life like you did this box!
Reincarnation as a tool set, got it!
@@DrRestoration 😂😂😂
@@DrRestoration I'd prefer a tap and die set. You know, anything associated with screwing.
@@Desmodus1958 hahaha I’ve got one 😉
@@DrRestoration 😂😂
The most impressive thing about this video is that box got that way with none of the original set pieces being lost or incomplete
I have another the same way I’ll be restoring soon!
This is just a tip. A peice of foam would be nice for the lid. It will cushion the tools and keep the tools from rattling. Just a tip. Nice restoration though. Have a good one.
Very nice idea I will add some foam or felt!
The green looks nice
super cool. perfect restoration…⛏️🔧🔩⛓️⚔️⚒️🔨🛠️👍
It's now has a great 👍 lease on life Bro.keep up the great work.👏🏻👌👌👌
On that oak board, I would’ve made a u-shaped groove across the entire board across the horizontal pieces to better facilitate removal of those pieces. This would give my thumb and index finger a place to be able to go to aid in pulling out those long horizontal tool pieces. Otherwise, nice job!
I'm not a huge fan of how the wood turned out, but overall you gave it new life. I hate throwing out old tools, so you definitely saved them here!
The insert was too deep. You'll never be able to grab anything out of there but the sockets without using a magnet or something to pry them out. Great video to watch though.
Dear Mr. The box for the tools of socket wrenches, as you just made, have given me ideas, but I also have to make the box for various tools myself.
But you make it all very beautiful and I not only enjoy it but also learn from it.
Nice project. Just remember the final finish will ALWAYS depend on the prep work you put into it. Even powder coat will never make a questionable surface look flawless. But nice project all the same. Any time you save a tool is a great thing...
Definitely better with the green! Close to John Deere green? Great work on the wood inserts!
Good choice to go with the green👍
Blue paint looks like there are stars
Now That is a proper restoration, and not just buffing it up, are painting a tool, and declaring you restored it. Very very nice work, and you've made yourself proud🤟👍 Green is my flavor color 😍
👊Thank you!! I knew I should have went with green to start! 😂
Not really a restoration when he destroys the original plastic insert
Green is a winner in this case , one pass over the face with epoxy putty , sand and new finish , I still like the transformation
perfect.. awesome job..🪛⚒️⛏️🔩⚔️🛠️🔨⛓️👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I like the green, too. It reminds me of the classic S-K tool boxes I remember from the 70s.
Looks good, great job 👍
Very satisfying!
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Nice job. I liked the blue finish. It kind of looked like a hammered finish. A tip for filling the pitting if you want a smoother finish before painting or powder coating, use bondo. Dries quickly and easy to sand smooth.
The blue looked awesome in my opinion, not as neat as the green but way more interesting
I really enjoyed this video, no talking, just showing. How cool is this guy, with a bit of humour thrown in!!
U r the world best all-rounder..
Love your work and this restoration, especially the wood insert. - I was struggling to think of what I could do on my own restoration and the answer is now solved, many thanks
Thank you!
Great job!!! Love the wood insert. I work in a FOD environment and have to have individual shadows, but I’m going to do this. I prefer my old tools to new. They have character. Again. Great job!
Excelente trabajo 👍 y la base de las herramientas quedó genial 👍 en madera. Muy bella caja. Saludos desde Venezuela ciudad de Maracaibo.
Thanks for all your entertaining videos. I also like when you include your mistakes and faults!
Keep on keeping on,my man!
Thanks for your kind words Torb! There’s some great stuff coming! 🙂
@@DrRestoration Thanks for your answer! You are very kind.
Beautiful restoration job. Love the oak interior.
Excellent job. Hugs from Brazil.
You can tell that this tool box sat in the same place undisturbed for a very long time. I think the only change I would have made would have been to retain the plastic tray. It didn't look like it had become brittle or was falling apart. Could have also used it to create a mold out of silicon and made a new tray that way. Something possibly to try for next time. Still. Any save is a good one!
Alas, Scoutcrafter would be proud
I had just that set there about 1982 and steel was very soft! The sockets striped out and the ratchet end sheared off.
No I was not abusing the tool.
Yep, These are dollar store quality.
Not dead...just very sick.
GREAT WORK BROTHER ...👍👍👍....VERRRRRRRRRRRY NICE👍👍👍 .....🤩❤️😘.....
Love the green well done
I really like the green, it makes it look more classic. However, I wish you would have painted the letters white to make them stand out. God bless man ✝️
I like the backwards blade trick you did there
"I'll bring it back to life".
Very cool...
Пример того как наличие оборудования не гарантирует результат.
и в красивую американскую коробочку, напихали китайской хрени
Работа с деревом - это явно не его тема)
So satisfying! Thanks for the video
you restore the box is very beautiful. I will learn your way.
Thank you! We never stop learning 🙂
Awesome
I liked the bumpy blue !
It came out pretty good. Next time try a coat of primer and instead of powder paint, just a simple “baked “ enamel. The primer covers a multitude of sins, and the enamel will flow under heat very nicely. Also a chemical rust remover might do a slightly better job of rust removal... although the blaster looks like it did a good job. (The solution can get into micro-cracks a bit better). Also a router might have made the wood removal process a bit easier and faster for you. But everything looks great. Good job.
I liked. Good job.
Way cool 👍 😍
Love the wooden replacement tool holder! Novel idea! Well Done Mate!
One thing you can try on another powder-coat project is to use black as a ground coat for the candy blue.
I will have to try that blue on black!
Great job!!
Great job... thanks!
Very very nice! Great job, like always!
Thanks DC! Proud of this one 🙂
Should sand off or paint the lettering on the case. Couldn't see how much relief there was in the insert to allow removal of the rachets. Nice project.
Thank you 🙂
Way better than ever.....
Excellent!!! The wood was a very nice touch!!!
Thank you!
VERY impressive!
Хорошо получилось, мне настроение подняло
I recently subscribed for the content and the curious presentation. Firmly tapping on things you want viewers to notice as if saying, "look at this or suffer the consequences". It's funny to me.
I also appreciate the visual prompt to subscribe etc rather than a verbal request.
More impact IMO.
Welcome to the channel Tom, enjoy the videos! :)
Great job, I want to do as you do👍
Very nice restoration !
This restoration was the most "meh it's fine" restoration Ive seen so far
Other restorers would be embarrassed to post half-assery like this.
It's going to be hard to grip the tools for removal when they are recessed that deep into the wood.
I love your videos!! It helps me to rest and relax me!! Thank you!!! 😍😘
Thank you ❤️👍🏼🇺🇸🌵
ottimo restauro
Nice job. The wood part needs some finger cutouts so you can pull the tools out easier.
I didn’t think of that, great idea!
Nicely done! Very cool restoration and I love the wood insert idea.
Thanks again bro!
Good job like always. Big fan of powder painting 🤗
Good tool recovery! Good luck!
Thank you! 🙂👍
Totally amazing
Really loved the colour
Nice choice 👌
Thank you! 👍😃
Amazing job!!
Thanks bro!
Wow, that’s now magnificent! That wood insert really sets it apart from the normal socket set. 👍🇦🇺
Thanks Mate!
5:03 OH GOD MY EARS. Hahaha, great job as always my dude!
Haha my bad! Thank you 🙂
This is very well done!
Thank you!
So glad you ripped up that extruded plastic insert. You made a new one
turned a cool old vintage socket set into a heirloom. good job!
Thanks Steve
nice job.
Thanks!
A CNC or laser cutter would have been helpful on this project. I wish I had a sandblaster so I could do this too!
Good stuff
Nice color
Thanks Ab 🙂
Hello mister beautiful restoration good job
Thank you!
You should maybe had consider using citric acid instead of media blasting to get the locking mechanism totally rust free. Also maybe do some slots around the extension so you can get it out from it's hole as it looked like it can be little tricky by hand
well done sir...you can make sell them again.i.like the quality of your video.
I think that is an old SK tool set , used to sell those decades ago was one of my first sets I got as a teenager ..
i would have never have thought to use wood for the insert i would have gone straight for foam but it looks great
The work on creating the insert to replace the plastic interior was great. But being a nit picker (it's genetic), I could see some of the box edges were separating from other edges when you were measuring. The light was coming through the gaps. I am surprised you did not seal those to be safe. Sure the whole box is merely folded metal but a little reinforcement after the great job patching the letters in the top would have been the cherry on the top of such nice work.
Good work. If you paint the letters, it will look better.
Thanks for the tip
That was a great restoration! New subscriber!
Thanks Jim!
Great work just subscribed
Thank you John! 🙂
After all that work powder coating it you then slid it across your steel workbench I imagine you scratched it up pretty nicely. How about a rubber mat on that thing. Looks really nice
It’s a wooden chalk board workbench, didn’t hurt a thing. 🙂
👍👍👍
4:47 Blasphemy! 🤣🤣🤣👏
уровень дворового умельца...
On top of your beautiful work, your editing is perfect too.
Thank you Samantha!
Very nice overall though the bottom looked kind of rough when you were powder coating. Would the filler that you used on the letters work for the pitting that was there? Regardless, I loved the look of the final product.
Thank you! I was unsure if the filler would work so I didn’t try it, but now I believe it would. My last toolbox I used some high temp jb weld and that did not work out very well.
@@DrRestoration use regular old bondo for filling the pits. Dries fast and you can sand it in an hour or less
Me gustaría más si hubiese aplicado merula a la parte con imperfecciones.
Always and simply Great. Well done
Thank you!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
did you not use any power coat primer before the first blue application?
Сделано Супер! Молодец. 🇷🇺
Thank you!!!
Как увидел что хотите темносиним покрасить так у меня все опустилась а потом смотрю неее зелененьким супер. Зелененьким мой любимый цвет.
What do you think is the minimum size air compressor for sandblasting?
I’d say ideally you want 30 gallons or more.
