I love how understanding she is!! It can be hard when people are "grossed out" by a cultural dish you love.
same it's refreshing, I feel people shouldn't be offended of other people taste buds lol
Exactly
Koreans have this odd assumption that kimchi (and pretty much every other Korean food) is too spicy for foreigners, so you get a lot of amazed looks and "you eat Korean food very well!!' with lots of "ah, nomu shingihae"s from older folks lol
I would be crestfallen if anyone wouldn't love german bread...I am so proud of it! 😭
@Silicon Nomad it's more that it's a very unusual type of pickling than it is the spiciness or whatever. Pretty much every non-Korean makes a weird face when they first try it lol, but you get used to it over time. Bokkum kimchi is probably the best way to introduce people to kimchi. Totally smooths out the flavour profile.
Legend says: That lady is still drinking water and may never stop
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂 she needed milk to neutralize the acidity
HAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA
She must not actually be southern cause southern people eat spicy food all the time
All the salt makes you thirstyyyyyy
If couldn’t believe that had young kids trying it. Even Grandma admitted that her own great grandson hasn’t yet tasted it, as it’s very spicy for a young kids pallet. I was pleasantly surprised to see how polite most of the kids were, especially compared to some of the adults.
If I had to guess they had a mild batch but I'm not too surprised, they tend to have them try some solid stuff
My momma said that I was eating little fistfuls of kimchi when I was a baby 👀. I mean, makes sense considering I'm 13 and can handle spicy stuff better than my grown dad lol.
Most American kids are used to eating spicy and sour snacks from a very young age so it's not really surprising
@@ConstantChaos1 I also thought that, usually they take down a notch, they probably didn’t give them the very spicy kind...
The kids who eat flaming cheetos and dont have ulcers yet, could eat it 😂
I'm mexican American and I got introduced to korean culture by kpop then I got really into kdrama and I always saw the actors eat kimchi at least once in a drama and I really wanted to try it cause it seemed to be a staple korean food and I didnt know that it's so popular that they sell it in my nearest walmart, I went and picked some up, the first thing I remember opening my first jar of kimchi was the smell was so pungent and strong, let me tell you I was scared to try it but I did so anyway and the first thing I thought is this is so sour, I put it back in fridge and thought to myself, well I'm not opening that ever again no sir, no way. Then maybe 2 days later I was hungry, I have food in the house but I didnt want to eat any of that, I remember oh I have kimchi and I gave it another try, let me tell you that second try I'm not sure why I completely and utterly just fell in love with it, and I sometimes eat it straight out of the jar, sometimes kimchi quesadillas are good, kimchi fries( theres a korean Mexican food truck in austin called chi'lantro), other good stuff, my family hates the smell but I love it.
I get the random craving for it too, like especially when I'm sick, and let me tell you, I have had the virus twice now and every time I go right for the kimchi because you can still taste it, and on normal days it makes a great garnish
I'm not sure how I feel about a Mexican/Korean fusion...kinda feel a disturbance in the force...if I still lived in Austin, I might find that food truck to give it a try. Sadly, this Austinite is trapped in the Midwest.
OHMYGOSH FELLOW AUSTIN PERSON HI
I’m not going to attempt to try it lol
I love that you specified you’re American, a lot of pochos say they’re just Mexican but we have very different cultures. Specially since most Mexican-American migration is from the south of Mexico which is very different from northern Mexico.

@violamateo Not at all similar. Just because we dig a hole for Barbacoa doesn’t mean it’s fermented. Traditionally the kimchi pots were buried to keep them cold through the winter.
Bruh, as a korean, I never eat kimichi by itself, they shouldve at least given them some rice to eat with
Yeah, I haven’t tried kimchi yet but it doesn’t seem like a main dish. It’s a side dish, so it should have been put along side with something else. 😅
I only eat kimchi for breakfast tho. And maybe I'm so used to it
I eat it straight out of the jar!
@@amusingmyslf me too!
I am SEAn and I love just munching on kimchi straight out of the jar since the beginning. It tastes better than my normal pickled cabbage(and that I snack on them too)

Yea!
I'd love to see a Grandma OK fashion show.
Asa 🖤 She always brings the class.
Period 💅
I'm Southern, not a grandma yet, and I love kimchi! I found it interesting that most of the grandmas didn't like it, cause the South I know loves pickled and fermented foods, hell, we pickle eggs and pigs feet! Lol!
There were only 2 who said they didn't like it, but for some reason they edited the video to make it seem like most of them didn't like it. I wonder why
Most of those "Southern Grandma's" reminded me of Golf Course Grannies or Condo Queen Grandmas who's idea of a meal is going to a 5 star diner instead of making it themselves.
As a Russian, I LOVE pickled foods, since its so cold in the winter nothing can grow, so people in Russia used to make many kinds of pickled foods. When I first tried kimchi I was like "IS THIS TRUE SARANG?-(Love in Korean)" But I feel like it would have been better if the kids had some rice to go with the kimchi or just some other side dishes that aren't as spicy
Also, grandma be shining as always ✨🌟
I agree! Kimchi somehow reminds me of малосольные огурцы (its a type of pickle preparation I grew up eating tons of in Russia)
As Polish I confirm.
Half Finnis here. We eat loads of pickled food and cabbage beets etc 🥰😍 so nice. Live kimchi
I feel like the southern ladies are more used to pickled veggies, they did better than I thought
We love sauerkraut too! And chow chow. We love cabbage♥️
Yeah, there are a fair amount of pretty funky chowchows and pepper sauces in the American South (I'm in Georgia). There has also been a lot of immigration from Korea particularly in parts of Georgia, so Korean restaurants/food is much more common now than it was ten years or so ago. One of the best Korean restaurants I've been to is in the town I grew up in in west central Georgia, which is still weird to me.
Yes Chow Chow is like Kimvhi and Southerners eat it a LOT. It is just more diced up
Interesting... I've lived in the south (Georgia primarily) my entire life and never heard of this "chow chow"... heading to Google...
Yeah we pickle everything in the south lol.
“You know what I did this summer I ate spicy pickled cabbage”
She’s so cute T T
so does everyone else in new york
lmao it was hilarious i loved it
what's special about your g'ma is that she is open to so many things. That is very rare.
My husband, who is a “meat and potatoes” kind of guy who doesn’t like anything “weird”, LOVES kimchi - thanks to a young adulthood in the Air Force stationed in Korea
I’ve never had kimchi but as a Hispanic who eats rice everyday I feel like it would be so good with rice!😂
As someone who loves me some grilled kimchi on my burritos and tacos, I say go for it!
I love kimchi in a quesadilla, so if those are your jam, give it a shot!
Lol. They make kimchi fried rice, too. They’re really good. And I’m not even Korean 😂
Kimchi hit different with plain white rice 🔥🔥🔥
It IS SO GOOD with rice. I do think it would be good with Spanish rice or basmati.
I feel like they often do this for dramatic effect - presenting traditional foods just 'splat' on a plate without considering how it would be served in an everyday setting. It's fun, but the people trying it are missing out.
Swedish 'surströmming' is a classic. XD
Love the video as always though, and love kimchi too!
You're not suggesting we feed Grandma Ok surströmming, are you? 😅 She is far too sweet to be punished like that
There is something similar in Korea. It is fermented Stingray (Hongeo-hoe) so if she is able to eat that, Surströmming might not be a punishment ;)
I am not sure korea is allowed to import explosive fish jars XD
In fact when I first read about kimchi and saw it in pictures I was not very intrigued. But when I ate it in proper Korean restaurants (+ a Japanese izakaya) I realized that with kimchi was love everlasting.
@@EterPuralis I think they're suggesting that she eats it properly rather than just out of the can like most people do.
I hear it's good in tiny amounts with rich foods like cheese.
The lady at the end chugging a water bottle just made me laugh so much.

I haven't heard Oriental in a long time. Yup, definitely in the south….
Yeah I had to play it back ⏪
What is oriental?
Yeah, I was a little put off by that too.
That moment!
@Kaede I grew up using that word cause all of my family uses it. (I'm from TX, and have family here, in Oklahoma, and Arkansas). They literally ALL say Oriental to describe the people, area, and ideas of East Asia, because it is what they were taught. Oriental Medicine, Oriental people, Oriental rugs, Orient Express, etc. I'm 37 now and didn't have a clue some people considered the word offensive til my best friend heard me say it once and called me out. That was sometime around 5 years ago, so fairly recently, all things considered. I feel like someone should have told me sooner, but I was around other people who also used the word, or just didn't take offense to it. It took me awhile to un-learn it. I'll be the first to admit my older family members might be a little bit racist in other areas, but their use of Oriental is more due to lack of experience/exposure with multiple Asian people and how they feel about the word than actual racism towards Asians.
The mexicana abuelita with a brown hair and brown skin is like me...her reaction is the same reaction when I eat kimchi for the 1st time😅Amo tanto la reacción de la abuela ... tan linda🥰

Vegetarian vs Vegan are two different terms that I see used by many ppl differently. A subset of vegetarians tell me they can eat meat broth, just not meat itself. Other vegetarians tell me they can't. I know many vegetarians will eat eggs, milk, and cheese. So these terms are definitely different for people, depending on who you ask.
@@tweewin from what I've been told/ read a pescetarian doesn't eat anything with red meat in it (but eats fish and/or poultry), vegetarian doesn't eat anything with any meat in it, and a vegan doesn't use any animal products at all (including wool, cheese, milk, eggs, etc.)

My 4 year old eats kimchi every day and gets mad when I run out and have to make more 🤣
I wish my grandma is as awesome as yours.
Fun fact: Traditional kimchi isn't spicy! The chili peppers so prevalent in Korean cuisine now didn't arrive until the 17th century, and it wasn't until the 1800s that adding them to kimchi became popular. If you want to taste 'original' kimchi, ask for "baek kimchi" (white kimchi) :)
There are so many kinds of kimchi!! Even with cabbage kimchi, there are so many different ways it can taste, depending on how old it is. Fresh kimchi is cool and crunchy, older kimchi is fragrant and sour. My favorite seolleungtang restaurant served two different kinds of cabbage kimchi - one was really sour and the other had a hint of sugar. DELISH!!!! My favorite is kimchi jeon, but throwing some kimchi on the grill when you're cooking samgyupsal (that's "Korean BBQ" to you American folk) is mmmmmmmwah! I was 12 when I first tried Kimchi and I just wanted to share my first experience, so if you are uninterested, just keep scrolling.
I first tried Kimchi at my friends 13th birthday when I was 12 years old. When I first put it in my mouth, I didn’t find it spicy. Just very vinegary and strong. I couldn’t finish it. I didn’t want to NOT like it, so I called it a work in progress. The second time I tried it, I was 13 years old. The second time I tried it, it was so delicious! It was still a bit hard to finish the whole bowl of Kimchi (even though it was a small bowl), but I pushed through and finished it. At that time I still wasn’t used to the vinegar taste, but it was a thousand times better now.
My view on Kimchi at this moment:
Kimchi is delicious and I can’t wait to have it again. So far I have had it only 2 times in my life, but both times were fairly delicious. So excited to have my next bowl, and I am confident I will finish it with ease this time!🦋
When I first tasted kimchi, it reminded me of eating pickles straight out of the jar (which I love as a snack), and also of the Guyanese dish chicken foot souse that I ate when I was a kid at family potlucks. Super vinegar-y and salty, the kind that makes you wrinkle your nose and clears your nasal cavities the first few bites. But so very good and addicting. maan... I want some kimchi rn...
I *hate* vinegar. It's the reason I also hate basically every table hot sauce (tabasco, valentinos, tapatio). But I love spicy. Is there any chance I could enjoy it, or is it literally THAT vinegary?
@@phillystevesteak6982 It's pretty sour. The fermenting process kind of enhances the vinegar taste. Not sure if you would like it or not, but it's not terribly expensive to try a bit and see. A little more expensive than a jar of name-brand pickles.
Oh that makes total sense that anyone who enjoys souse would like kimchi.
@@phillystevesteak6982 There's no vinegar in cabbage kimchi, but it does get sour the older it gets. 16 ounce jars of Kimchi last only 3 days in my household. My mother and I are OBSESSED. we put it in everything. I loved this video ❤
lol the “blunt queen” Mexican mom- my sisters and I were rolling 🤣🤣
Would love to have her as a grandma
❤️🇲🇽😘
i know its been said thousand of times, but this grandma is so adorable
I remember years ago my siblings used to berate me for the smell when I used to eat it.....NOW they’re obsessed and love it so much they eat it by itself like snack!!!
That's the same as my partner except he will not touch it with a barge pole haha
It's the kind of food you eventually suddenly crave, unexpectedly, after a bad first experience with it. Yeah it tasted bad, but somehow it still tasted like food, and one day it so happens you wanna try it again.
Grandma is the absolute purest and sweetest thing I've seen in a long while
To anyone trying Kimchi for the first time, try Kimchi Fried Rice it's so good. When you cook Kimchi it removes some of the strong flavor and makes it easier or gentler to eat.
I love kimchi, I first tried it about three years ago and now always go to the Korean grocery store and buy it regularly now.
I love how much of a woke and respectful queen ur grandma is 🤣👑
That's an adorable grandma.
I'm American but my best friend is Korean and I eat dinner with her family alot and I absolutely LOVEEE kimchi
It took me a while to start liking kimchi, but I kept eating it because of its health benefits. Now I can’t live without it!
You guys are so kind and polite to the tasters--even when they were a bit rude.
I'm a michigan white white white lady but I love kimchee. But I think its because my grandmother was born in Germany and our family ferments sauerkraut every year for winter eating. And ive put hot sauce on my kraut for years. So of course it was a short hop to kimchee.
I don't like it too hot, but when you make it yourself you can control the hot pepper going in. 🥰🥘 🌶
@@Emeraldwitch30 I can totally see that connection :) Also, now I'm going to try putting hot sauce on my sauerkraut :)
@@J_Gamble i like to add fresh dill and garlic to my kraut too. Its great on burgers.
But I don't like kraut with caraway seeds.🤷♀️ My gran didn't either. Just tastes funny 🤪
@@Emeraldwitch30 Yum. The only time I like caraway with my sauerkraut is when it's in the bread of my Reuben sandwich.
I have never tried it, but I do like spicy food (within reason). I see kimchi at the grocery store...I think I'll get some and eat it with rice. Grandma is SO adorable, I always miss my older family members this time of year. 👩🦳🧡
My 5 yrs old and 8 yr old eat kitchen as a snack. They try everything. We were plantbased for 4 yrs and are now pescatarians but they have been eating kitchen for 4 of the last 5 yrs. I first tried kimchi when I went to a Korean restaurant I'm Japan and we put it on EVERYTHING. Burgers, sandwiches, soup, beans and rice, baked potatoes etc. I can't wait to visit Korea. Its like spicy vinegar kraut( or quick kraut).
I was just thinking "oooh I want some kim chee and rice" when grandma started drooling 🤤😁
The gateway to kimchi for American tastes is bulgogi. Start with just a little in a big bite of beef and rice.
Kimbap was how I started eating it. I'm culturally Portuguese, born and raised in the US. So my tastes were more in line with a Mediterranean farmer's diet (my mom's cooking). I think after kimbap I moved onto bibimbap and bulgogi. :)
The faces Grandma puts on are most epic!
I hope you both realize... Grandma OK has FAR more grandchildren than you think! We all love her and wish she was OUR grandma! 💜
Im African and love Kimchi. I think I have the spirit of a Korean ancestor, because I love me some Korean food..😊😊❤❤
You should react to Trixie Mattel trying Korean food with korean drag queen Kim Chi!! I think you would really like it!
yessss
Exactly😭
Your grandma is the cutest person ever!!
I love grandma ok she’s just the best.
I had a Korean BFF when I was 12, and so kimchi came into my life young. Now, I make my own.
I need some kimchi! My mouth is watering.
I've been eating kimchi out of the jar for years now. Especially when you have a craving for something savoury. Nothing else like it...well maybe sauerkraut. I love that do.
the little boy who liked it awwww
American kids eat spicy foods, so the spice is typically not a big deal. At first I hated kimchi, then I found out that it's an anti-ager and suddenly I loved it. Lol! Seriously, I have a pickled jar in my refrigerator right now!
I am Blasian , half black, half Japanese, and I love Kimchi. I like having kimchi with japchae and rice.
I LOVE LOVE the GRANDMA SERIES!! xoxox from NYC
Their reactions are precious!!
I love Kimchi. First time i had it was on a burger at a restaurant.
