I think Luke was already pretty well versed in loss. He never knew his parents. His adoptive parents are murdered. His mentor is murdered by Vader. His best friend, Biggs, is killed during the assault on the first Death Star. He constantly lost companions, friends, and allies, as a result of the rebellion against the Empire. Vader cutting off his hand taught him the consequences of losing a sabre fight, but not really about loss…
      Cheers,

@@Wolf359inc those are superficial losses that almost if not everyone goes through. Luke up until that point never really fought a force user let alone debatably the best Jedi killer ever. He was cocky (plus the shoulder hit probably pissed Vader off) and Vader knew Luke was his son via Boba Fett. Vader had plans for Luke and to quote Vader when he chopped off the inquisitor's hand he said "they fight like Jedi, on the defensive waiting for an opening." And that's what ultimately what made them more proficient hunting Jedi. You can see this lesson play out in Return of the Jedi when Luke looks at his hand after disarming Vader

Not exactly! The Trial of the Flesh is just one of the Jedi trials. In some cases, the Jedi Council would consider injuries in the field, like Anakin losing his arm on Geonosis, to qualify as a trial.

This harkens back to Anakin's duel with Dooku and how this set Anakin even more to dive into the darkside. Maybe that is what Vader was hoping for in Luke, by exploiting a weakness Luke would push harder for more power, just as Anakin did. Just a thought

Well, he's more of a manipulator than I thought. I have previously interpreted this scene as Vader making a mistake by mutilating Luke because of his rage moment, similar to how he strangled Padme on Mustafar, and then trying to calm down and persuade his son as he realized what he was doing

  • @ZeusAmun-pt9dc

If you watch The sword Play you can tell it's a father playing with his son and simply not trying to do anymore than dominate his son without hurting him.
Then Luke gets a rage boost and hits Vader in his unprotected and very human shoulder.
Then in the heat if battle he acted without acting the moment hit all by itself.

@@RetneysHolocron I believe he did. Do not forget that with that kind of injury, he has to exert energy or even the force just to operate. Either he is distracted with the pain, or the drugs from the suits to keep him pains-free would for sure make him not at 100%. It's like driving under influence. M-count or what not, if you're living in that condition where a life support suit is needed, you're weaker than when you were a young buffalo with all limbs and pain free for sure. Obiwan is weaker in his old age by the same logic and therefore was easily struck down by Darth Vader.
Darth Vader = Handicaped Anakin. The Emperor just salvaged him with the armor. Also after the fall of the Jedi, how can Vader grow without any other Jedi to challenge him.

The force specially created the chosen one so that he would learn to think and fight like a Sith in order to fulfill the prophecy as well as his destiny. Vader also treated Luke mercifully, who angered him by hitting him on the shoulder. Considering how "polite" the Jedi and some Siths, are usually and how they like to chop off opponents' hands, things could have ended more grimly if the circumstances had been different. The most important thing is that Vader calmed down and showed that the conflict in his soul between light and darkness began back then, marking the beginning of his return to the bright side.

Also Vader could still use lightning. Just use the force to create it. The hands are really more of a guide for the energy, but I've always suspected that the lightning doesn't come from the body, it's just directed by the body. The actual lightning starts a few millimeters from the finger. I suspected as a kid that Palpatine could use lightning just because he was way more powerful than Vader. Keep in mind Vader was not a chosen one back in those days as it was pre prequels. Masters of Teras Kasi showed Vader able to call lightning down from the sky. I always thought that was a valid form of lightning. I also thought that Vader more hands on from flying to dueling. Other aspects of the force were still available and trained in but dueling and flight dueling seemed more his area of interest. Palpatine wanted power and was more inclined to delve into deeper aspects of the force and didn't like direct competition the way Vader did. Palpatine should have never had a lightsaber nor should Yoda. I viewed them as similar. Both wielded the force itself and we're far beyond lightsabers. They could still have one because sometimes you would have to cut through a wall or something but they are tools. No more, no less.

It was a mistake for Luke to hit his father on the shoulder, given the sad state of his body. Vader was still polite and restrained. I wanted to, I would have killed my son if I wanted to (in mind how harsh life taught him). But the dark lord needed him alive, so it was logical to disarm the enemy. Dooku was even tougher when he chopped off more than just Anakin's hand.

  • @Wolf359inc

That doesn’t make sense. “The Force is an energy field that surrounds us, binds us together”. It is in everything, not just living things. If not, then how do you explain Geode, or whatever that Jedi rock in the High Republic is (not that this is a great example, because, well, it’s in the High Republic…)?
Surely Vader’s prosthetics were still imbued with the Force, even though they wouldn’t have had as high a Midichlorian count as Vader himself? I would even go so far as to believe that constant exposure to such high midichlorians would eventually “mutate” his prosthetics, imbuing them with higher midichlorian amounts, just due to contact exposure.
I guess it falls under the same category as Vader not wanting to upgrade his armour over the years, for… reasons? As the Emperor’s right hand man, it was in both Papa Palpatine, and Vader’s, interests, for Vader to be as powerful as possible. Yet he existed in an inferior suit, which required him to continually use the Force, just to stay alive, and functional. By design, the suit wasn’t even insulated against electricity. Much of this could be put on Palps, who knew a pre-Mustafar Vader, who was more or less intact, would end up being more powerful than him, eventually. However, Vader could have made enhancements surreptitiously, making him more powerful, unbeknown to Palpatine.
I know, at the end of the day, it is all fiction, and doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but I like my fiction to be consistent…
    Cheers,

    • @kseniaboytseva4714
      @kseniaboytseva4714 Місяць тому

Vader's right prosthetic strengthened his connection to the force. In addition, Sith amulets were hung on us and alchemy was used. The left cybernetic hand could probably use Force too. By order of the emperor, a new suit was created for Vader, but it was dangerous to change into it, since it would temporarily have to turn off the life support system and the dark lord's implants. In addition, the pain and discomfort from the old suit fueled Vader's dark side. So he improved the costume as much as possible.
