Polymer clay artist here: Over time, the satin “seal” will react with the clay and the air and become quite sticky to the touch. If you want to protect your creations with a glossy finish, buy polyurethane from the hardware store and brush with that. Also, clay can be very brittle. Be REALLY gentle with those coaters! Happy crafting (:

Do you know what kind of clay that is? It looks like plasticine to me. I’ve never seen coloured clay before.

If you put down baby powder on your surface before you roll out the clay it won’t stick to your surface.

If you don't have baby powder, you can also use corn starch or flour

Should probably put a warning on the video telling people that polymer clay is not food safe. Please wash your hand before eating and don't put hot food on them.

I’ve actually tried a few of these the past few days cause I had left over polymer from an Xmas ornament craft, and I have to say they came out even more beautiful than I had anticipated, I always mess this Nifty crafts up somehow but not this one, I posted a few finished products to social media and everyone else loves them too, so basically, thanks so much Nifty/Buzzfeed for the idea,
I made a soap dish out of the trinket tray idea, probably won’t hold up but it’s super cute for now lol

This is a very easy and fun clay technique to do! You can make endless creations that look 2 times as cool using this method. This is good inspiration! Thanks for sharing, I love this channel.
P.S what clay is it and will it deteriorate a lot over time?
I am also going to say this just because I can: RIP Grant Thompson, Cameron Boyce, and more

Poke a hole in the top of number 2 and add a little tray for it to sit on and it doubles as an incense stick burner.

Elana, well spotted that it's not just normal mineral clay (what people normally think of as "clay" - the heavy, stone like clay used for pottery, etc) - they're using: *polymer clay*
Polymer clay is a type of modelling clay which is much lighter and different to work with than normal mineral clay (as it's made out of plastic polymers) and it comes in different colours, usually in little packets like plasticine (like the squares in the beginning of the video).
Just google "polymer clay" and you'll find plenty info, brands and places selling it.
E.g. t's sold on Amazon and in many art & craft stores and even supermarkets. Popular brands are: "FIMO" or "Sculpey", but these are really quite pricey - unnecessarily so for your first try and there are other cheaper ones that will work fine, especially to start with (it's really better to start with cheaper ones to learn how to work with it and experiment before spending a small fortune). Also, often in supermarkets there will be a cheaper version among kids' craft materials - especially a set with small amounts of different colours would be best as a starter.
I'd also recommend looking up more detailed tutorials on how to work with it, as there are some tricks to make it easier - e.g. blogs or here on UA-cam. Enjoy creating!

@@Czadzikable thank you so much! Are you familiar with the "air dry" type of Fimo and whether or not such projects as in the video would work with that, eliminating the oven?

You can, just remember that it's not water resistant and you need to seal it. I seal my projects with waterproof glue, then after 48 hours spray them with gloss or satin acrylic spray.

If you use crayola brand, it won’t be easy to work with unless you add something more to it. Also do not use crayola air dry clay for diy or construction purposes it doesn’t work well

    Can anyone answer my questions?
    1. What kind of clay should be used?
    2. When you say bake, can I do this in my oven? And for how long?

    • @ashlyndevore3770
      @ashlyndevore3770 5 років тому

The clay used looks very similar to the brand “sculpy” clay, that’s the brand I ended up using to recreate the coasters. Any brand of bake clay should have baking instructions on the pack typically low heat (sculpy brand says 175 degrees) and how long you bake depends on how big and how thick the creation is. Yes you can just use an oven to bake.
