I find it interesting Spiked's solution was to adjust the door cups. Seeing as how they're built specifically for the Miata, any clue as to why they didn't just design them like 2mm thinner?
That’s a great question. They use the same mold for all generations and I would imagine that due to tolerances in production there would be times where the Spiked door bushing fits perfectly and times where it doesn’t, hence why they suggest bending the door cup to the bushing
It’s true, they’re all like this! The ND is better than previous gens thanks to modern design and materials, but still suffers over time and especially if the suspension is more stiff
Great video as usual. I’m installing those this week. I got them in smoke color, goes well with my 30AE. Also, where did you get the door latch covers?
Thank you so much, and awesome! I think those will look very good on your 30AE. The latch covers came from a previous customer/mentor of mine when I sold cars at Mazda. I do not remember where he got them from
Based on the way yours fit initially, I would’ve left that alone and not widen the door cuff. Just my opinion but you want that really tight and it didn’t look like it was going to interfere with your closing the door.. call video, and just my $.02 which is essentially worthless anyway. 😂 Cheers.
Lol I appreciate it. The door definitely didn’t want to close all the way initially unless I put some real effort into it, hence why I adjusted the cup. It was much better after that but still felt solid
I know you’re prob sick of me but you have been a great channel to watch and learn for new ND owners and very helpful with responses. Hard to hear on my iPhone speakers but you would suggest? I know people talk about rattles with Miata’s. Feel like the only times I hear stuff is when music is rather low of course and when I put my soft top down and the window goes about half down. That’s when I might hear a little rattle and I’m curious if it could be from the window half down? Idk. I also feel like I hear a little/ soft rattle from the top when it’s down and music low but don’t want to look like a snob if I go to the dealer complaining about that (my ND is brand new). Figured that might just be the way things are with a soft top and it’s mute. Decent music or when I get exhaust going it’s good. Prob helps having those Bilsteins and I plan on getting some Eibachs soon
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching my videos and commenting good stuff. I hope they are helpful to you. Yeah, unfortunately it’s kind of the nature of these cars to have some rattles. It will get worse once you start stiffening the suspension and as the car gains more mileage on it. Mine doesn’t rattle too much but it can definitely be heard and felt on larger bumps and really uneven pavement
@@DriveMX5 yeah I understand that! Just the nature of the game too. Think that goes across the board for most manufacturers and I can see how it affects little roadsters. And no hate or bash on Mazda since I think they have come a long way but it’s not a high end luxury brand either so that’s kind of standard as time goes on. And honest reason you wouldn’t catch me in a Benz… all that money for “high luxury” and center consoles where gear shifts are located, a nice press on some plastic and that thing creeks more than a 10 year old Camry 😂 but that’s just me. Lots of loose cheap plastics to my ear. Do you ever hear anything from your soft top from time to time when it’s down though?
@@Revell25 that’s a great point about Mercedes! I don’t think I really hear anything when it’s down, but I might hear a little door rattle from time to time, especially when the top is down and windows up
@@DriveMX5 I gotcha. But you don’t hear anything from when the top is down? And I mean the actual soft top making a little noise when it’s down behind you folded up. I guess I made that sound look doors with top down too lol And yeah, it didn’t matter what Mercedes I got in it did which does stink cause I like some AMGs and their new interior/ ambient lighting is the best in the game. I almost looked at getting a CLA AMG but didn’t think it was worth it not being a true AMG. I just turned in my M340 lease and that thing had rattle issues in the center mainly from a speaker they could never get right but had so many service issues with BMW and cost a arm and a leg once warranty is up. It was horrible but fun to drive but still think this is more fun especially for the money and won’t cost a ton for upgrades lol it was crazy with that car… I get it’s “half” an M but any decent exhaust was at least $2k
@@DriveMX5 hey man, crazy enough I was watching something where Miata groups/ you go to tail of the dragon… I live in Atlanta so have gone up there a couple times. Small world that you’re in this region. I know they have that massive Miata meet later in the year and what not. I don’t really know anyone else with a Miata or who goes up there for these events or if anyone is allowed to go? But would love to get involved and start going to meets/ drives if people go around here. Thanks man!
I have a set of Autoexe Motion Control Beams sitting in my garage and am in 2 minds about installing it when my MX5 finally arrives from Japan. Have you looked into these? Would be great to hear your opinion of those as well in the ND2 chassis. I have a set of MCB installed in my GT86 and they are very effective at eliminating NVH from my spherical bearing coilover top mounts.
I haven't heard of motion control beams before. They seem like a chassis damper to reduce vibrations more than add stiffness. I would be very interested to hear what effects they produce for the ND chassis. I imagine they would make a noticeable difference
@@DriveMX5 well I finally got the car and this past weekend installed the MCB, after about 200km, and I can say there is a subtle improvement in initial turn in. The rear feels tighter and more responsive. Also, did the door bushings today and they were a surprise! I didn’t think I’d notice anything as the car is new but it definitely feels more solid afterwards.
Those are nice!!! I was an early adopter of the cravenspeed ones but the red really isn’t the best accent color. May order some of these in green 😎
Yes, do it!
Sand down the bushings....do not bend the door supports...
I did that with the passenger side and it took significantly longer and more work, plus ruined the finish on the edges of the bushing.

@@DriveMX5 Good point, I forgot that they're sold to fit all geenerations. Seems like a small correction to make overall though! I'm sold.
Great vid bro. Makes more sense to do this after going off stock suspension!
Thank you so much!
I swear the Mazda MX5 has always had this problem 😂 my old 90 benefited from this mod back in the day!

Bend the door cup - bonkers😱

You're welcome, thank you for watching!
i seriously dont get what the difference is...
It’s much more noticeable in person. The doors sound much more solid and secure when closing them and driving over bumps, plus they look amazing!
because the oem bushings are soft rubber, they allow the door to move.
the aftermarket bushings are hard, like nylon so it holds the door much firmer
People will waste money on anything 😂😂😂😂
But… why?
The difference is more noticeable in person. More solid sound and feel when closing the door and driving over bumps, plus they look amazing!
