Aidan Quinn really killed it in the argument scene with his father over Tristan’s abandonment of Susannah. He’s such an underrated actor.
I wonder why we don't see him in the big roles anymore. The 90's were hit after hit, and then he dissapeared.

He was so good, which made his character relatable to me as the eldest
Pitt killed it in the porch argument with Alfred. That poke to his chest was not in the script, neither was Pitt slapping the railing. Pitt has always been a master of improv
Loved him in “This is my father”. Real tearjerker.
A true Epic movie. They take you through so many emotions in each character. The PTSD of Tristan and William, The Envy of Alfred, The Lust of Susannah, The Innocence of Samuel and Isabel II, The Greed of the O'Banions, etc. Hidden in all of that is the loyalty and love between the father and his 3 sons.
One of the epic trilogy of period films that I watch time and again...the other two being dances with wolves and last of the mohicans...

when Anthony Hopkins shakily writes "AM HAPPY" I cant help but get choked up every time
Susannah was shocked when Alfred revealed the news to her of Tristan and Isabel's upcoming marriage. Everything that she wanted with Tristan (to be his wife and to have his children), she saw him have that with Isabel Two. When they all came upon each other in town during the festivities and she saw them and their children, it crushed her. I believe that was the breaking point for her. That's why she said what she did when Tristan was in jail. She loved Tristan so deeply that her heart (and mind) couldn't handle not being with him. Her only way out of that was to end her own life because the pain was too unbearable. The soundtrack to the movie is always playing for me. James Horner is a master when it comes to movie scores. He also did Braveheart, Titanic, and Glory, to name a few. It was a joy watching you react to this great film, Kamilla. Can't wait for your next reaction.
James Horners soundtrack is just amazing in this movie.
Second only to Braveheart, imo
Horner was at his best when he used a strong main theme and trusted it so much to repeat it over and over in a few variations, and damn, was he good at that. But even generally speaking, when it comes to film scores, the late eighties and the nineties are where it's at. Today's scores seem to be much less about strong themes and much more about underscoring.
@@Zorros2ndCousinTwiceRemoved well my favourite score composer is T. Newman, the quintessential master of the underscore, who can enhance the ambience like no other. I'm just a bit weary of all the Zimmer clones...

The greatest "I can change him" & "friend zone" (all in one) movie, ever.
Tristan's behavior after the war was perfectly understandable. He was suffering from severe PTSD in a time when such a thing wasn't even acknowledged and men were expected to just suck it up and deal with it quietly.

Tristan is the type of man that so many of us women want, while Alfred is the type of man that we really need! ❤❤❤❤
This is one of those stories you just can't look away from. It throws so many bad things at you, and things just keep going more and more wrong, but somehow it still manages to give you hope that things will get better.
27:20 "How is it that every time Brad Pitt plays a role, he gets the lady?" Ya, I'm sure there's no real life parallel to that situation, and the casting agents just cast him in these roles by chance.
At the end, I really appreciated Aidan Quinn ejecting the spent round and checking the chamber before he came fully out of cover. That's a nice little touch, because it's exactly what someone would do if they were raised around firearms and had a military veteran father teaching them to shoot.
“Set” in Montana but filmed in Canada west of Calgary as so many other films have been. I went out to be an extra for it but I was too tall. They wanted all the extras to be 5’ 10” or less. My buddy is in a few scenes as a soldier.
When anyone wonders, where is (insert movie here) shot, it's so beautiful...the answer is usually Canada, lol.
I wonder why the height requirement. I know they'll do this if they don't want a lead actor to seem as short as he is, but neither Brad Pitt nor Aiden Quinn is particularly short, or even average height.
I think Isabel Two was a good spouse for Tristan. Isabel knew how to read people & situations. She knew how to approach people & when to step back. Susanna, unfortunately, seemed more deeply infatuated with Tristan than in love. Susanna was very delusional about her relationship with Tristan. What annoyed me the most with Susanna is that she ignored Tristan's grief. It's one thing to not know how to console a grieving person. It's another thing when you don't acknowledge their pain. Susanna constantly hovered over Tristan rambling about their non-existent future. Not one time did Susanna ever ask Tristan about his feelings regarding Samuel's death. Nor give him encouragement regarding his guilt over Samuel's death.
One of my favorite movies. I hate stories that have too happy an ending. It's unrealistic. This ends on a bittersweet note. Not to mention the great cinematography. Perfect...
I love coming back to this movie once in a while. it's well made and memorable even after so many years. Movies made today should pay close attention, how good movies are made.
I remember the first time I saw this back in 1995. Cinematography wise, it is gorgeous. Truly one of the most picturesque movies ever made from that period. As for the story, it’s a gut punch every 15 minutes. It’s like a Shakespearean tragedy set in the Wild West. And by the end of it I was emotionally drained and spent.
Yes, Pitt got the bulk of attention and it would be all too easy to envy him, but I learned long ago what most women, good women, love is confidence. Being comfortable in your own skin.
Everyone in this picture gave a wonderful performance.
Henry Thomas (Samuel) as a child is the young boy in the 1982 movie E.T.
Susannah was an orphan, having lost her parents at a young age. I imagine that had an effect on her. Then she met a wonderful man at University in the form of Samuel. A man she loved and probably expected to spend the rest of her life happy with. Then, she fell in love with said man's brother, possibly even against her own better judgement. Then Samuel died, horribly. She fell in love with Tristan, who due to the loss of Samuel, was unable to love her the way she wanted to be loved. She married Alfred, probably because she knew he loved her. But the problem was she didn't love him back and his loving her didn't bring her any joy. Likely only sadness because she was exploiting his love for her own selfish purposes. As she said in her letters, she was unable to have children. Then she finds out that the man she loves is back and is now marrying a little girl now grown up, that Susannah once played with. This girl has everything Susannah ever wanted out of life. A loving husband who she also loves, the man she loves, happiness and children. And in her jealousy she wishes this girl, who's really an innocent in all this, dead. Then it happens, she probably feels nothing but regret and misery. For destroying the lives of so many around her that she loves. Tristan, Samuel, Alfred (while she doesn't love him as a woman loves a man, she clearly cares for him), Isabelle, Colonel Ludlow, ever since her arrival, nothing but misery has befallen them. This is likely the thought process that goes through her mind throughout the movie, and up to her eventual suicide.

@@michaelatteberry6462 Well it's like my third or fourth viewing of the movie if you include reactions. Plus Centane's editor included the bit where it's mentioned she's an orphan. That part never really clicked before this viewing. It suddenly made sense with that piece of information and multiple viewings.
Kamilla " your bringing a horse into the battlefield, poor horse" You really should watch War Horse a movie about a young British lad and his love for his horse in World War I 😢

A lot of people these days don't have a taste for epic melodrama, so I'm glad you do. I'm just an old man myself now, but I cry each time I see this film--or a lovely reaction to it.
Legends of the Fall, Last of the Mohicans, Braveheart, Dances with Wolves... The 90s was such a great time for EPIC films!
Fuckin A. 90's was an INCREDIBLE movie decade, and so underapreciated. If the 40's was the golden age and the 70's was the silver age, the 90's was one hundred percent the bronze medal winner.
A good cry cleanses the soul
This is one of those films that is so hard to watch. It crosses all the human emotions, it's pretty remarkable. I remember the first time I saw this when it came out on home video in '95 or '96...I was about 15 or 16 and it was such an epic story. The characters were so well written and cast. it's one of the best films of that era for sure.
This is one of my touchstone movies that I rewatch every few years to remind myself of things about Life that I do not want to forget. I'm glad that you enjoyed it as well. Thank you for sharing it. ❤
A good movie, but so sad. Much like "Platoon", I don't thinks a light hearted happy moment in the whole movie. Another story with a similar feel is the mini series "Lonesome Dove" from 1989. It has a great ensemble cast, good story, great acting, many unexpected incidences and really leaves you feeling emotional by the end. Maybe consider putting on your watchlist. Great reaction as always.
As much as I love Band of Brothers, Lonesome Dove is still # 1 in my book!
Tristan died in 1963, Brad Pitt was born in 1963.
My favorite movie. It is heart wrenching from all sides. I felt so sorry for Alfred, and Tristan…and even Susannah. Julia Ormond and Aidan Quinn were phenomenal. They all deserved Oscars.
This is one of, if not my favorite movie of all time. It has everything for me, History, good story, amazing scenery, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and good music.

You mentioned that Brad Pitt always seems to get the women. I once read an article that classified actors in various groups. I don't remember all the classes, but I do remember two. Brad Pitt was the example of the Ladies' Man. He always gets the girl, is typically on the "pretty" side of handsome, and the women in the audience usually love him, but the men in the audience don't -- possibly out of jealousy. In contrast, George Clooney was the example of the Man's Man. He also usually got the girl and the women in the audience love him, but the men in the audience like him too and want to be his friend. I _did_ note, as I got older, that it was true that Brad usually starred in films that more women liked than men did -- like Thelma & Louise, Meet Joe Black, and this one.
Interview with the Vampire came out 3 months after this movie. Between the two, Brad Pitt shot to stardom and became the obsession of millions of women all over the world.
This is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time.

This is a really good movie, but the first time I watched it I was emotionally drained.
One of my favorite modern dramas; has everything a movie needs. Excellent script, fantastic cast & the setting/cinematography are top tier. The sadness, despair & cruelty of life just hits you in this story.

Thumbs up for reacting to this movie. It's not the most popular one between reactors but it's so damn good.
Saw this when it came out and watch it occasionally and every time I question if I really want to. But it's just that good. It really shows how family members can have amazing traits, still be flawed and fragile, how relationships can wax and wane and that life will always be a surprise and not just joyful - but also shows that through all that love and forgiveness can't break those bonds you make. I would also suggest a movie called "Last Of The Mohicans" with Daniel Day Lewis. A period piece with some of the same themes and emotion.

The studio didn't want Aidan Quinn for the role of Alfred. But Brad Pitt stood up for him and told the studio that if Quinn wasn't in the movie, then he wouldn't be either.

You always pick the movies with the best musical scores.
I found Alfred incredibly attractive, with a steady head on his shoulders. He was the first to decide to go look after Samuel. Tristan did it after Susanna asked him to, although I believe Tristan would have done it anyway. I even admire his fierce attitude in making a change in government. Despite his father's views, he stood up for his beliefs and carved his own path. My only two faults with him were pining after a woman he knew didn't love him back (maybe it was due to low self-worth) and not getting out of government sooner after they killed Isabel 2.
My favorite movie i recommend to every reactor. Because of this movie I grew out my hair and sometimes braid it like one Stab. 🇲🇽🇺🇸
I have NEVER understood why Alfred comes off as sympathetic in this movie? Alfred also fell in love with his brothers wife at first sight, was living his life to please other people, and continued to blame and put a guilt trip on Tristan about Samuels death whenever it suited him.
Yeah and he also sided with the government(and the corrupt bootleggers he was working with) over his family when Isabel was shot and killed by the police. Everyone in this film had a flaw and there really was no "hero". Such is life....reason why this film is very good.
There were no cell phones to call and tell Alfred that he was coming over. How could Susana tell Alfred before he got home, that Tristan had come by. It's 1919 or so.

Hopkins Always reminds me of my pops. He was raised in a time, when being called a half breed was the norm.
This video came in a time of movie rental (VHS places). I skipped this movie so many times because of it's Finnish translation name. "Passions of the wind" Sounded like a too romance movie for my taste in that day. Afterwards I thing when I saw this it that this is one of greatest movies. I put the blame of Finnish translators that pick the crappy Finnish name fot a title so I didn't saw it earlier. Great movie! I'm so glad so loved it.
Tristan was Colonel Ludlow's favourite because of all his sons he was the least like him.
You should watch Four Brothers. It’s an OG classic in every sense of the word
Technically not an OG, its a modern reimagining of 'The Sons of Katie Elder', but I do agree they're both great movies!

As old dude, I have seen this movie million times already. Seeing your reaction and how felt like I was watching a horror movie is how i felt the 1st time. But movie is one of best story. Coincidently, I drove to from NJ to Great falls Montana last week . It is truly wild wild west there and thought about movie a little of course it did not look like back then as movie depicted. This is yet another movie that spurred the love people have for Montana, not quite so much as 'A River Run Through It', all thanks to the scenery and beauty. I am happy to live in Montana, not far from Helena actually, but in western Montana on the lands that look very much like this film. To the people not from Montana, Montana is called "The Last Best Place" and for good reason. It's an amazing place to visit and if you do visit remember when you're done turn your butt around and go back to where to came from. 😉😁

Excellent reaction, yes, it is a very emotional movie.
A film that showcases perfectly how extremely beautiful/handsome men are treated irrationally favourably by almost all they encounter . Respect , admiration , patience and love whether they deserve it or have earned it . I used to be very very handsome and since my looks have faded with age and a bad injury after a crash the world is a very very different place now .
