Pitt killed it in the porch argument with Alfred. That poke to his chest was not in the script, neither was Pitt slapping the railing. Pitt has always been a master of improv
Tristan's behavior after the war was perfectly understandable. He was suffering from severe PTSD in a time when such a thing wasn't even acknowledged and men were expected to just suck it up and deal with it quietly.

Add his guilt over Samuel as well as his relationship with his fiancee and its quite a lot. There were discussions of shell shock at the time, thouogh it wasn't as well understood or handled as it is now. The experiences of WWI (and WWII) vets helped shape a growing body of knowledge. It wasn't well handled by most, though, for sure.
I think Isabel Two was a good spouse for Tristan. Isabel knew how to read people & situations. She knew how to approach people & when to step back. Susanna, unfortunately, seemed more deeply infatuated with Tristan than in love. Susanna was very delusional about her relationship with Tristan. What annoyed me the most with Susanna is that she ignored Tristan's grief. It's one thing to not know how to console a grieving person. It's another thing when you don't acknowledge their pain. Susanna constantly hovered over Tristan rambling about their non-existent future. Not one time did Susanna ever ask Tristan about his feelings regarding Samuel's death. Nor give him encouragement regarding his guilt over Samuel's death.
A true Epic movie. They take you through so many emotions in each character. The PTSD of Tristan and William, The Envy of Alfred, The Lust of Susannah, The Innocence of Samuel and Isabel II, The Greed of the O'Banions, etc. Hidden in all of that is the loyalty and love between the father and his 3 sons.
Yeah, most of women under 30 choose a guy like Tristan over a guy like Alfred for sure. And if you think about it, how accurate it is from the movie, that because of Tristan even 2 women died... it happens in real life too.

At the end, I really appreciated Aidan Quinn ejecting the spent round and checking the chamber before he came fully out of cover. That's a nice little touch, because it's exactly what someone would do if they were raised around firearms and had a military veteran father teaching them to shoot.

Was he a nice guy? Was very entitled. She didn't want to be with him and he didn't care. All that mattered to him was he wanted her and didn't want Tristain to be with her. Got in bed with criminals to be a crooked politician.
Was he, though? He was in willing league with gangsters to win a political campaign. I mean, nothing against gangsters or crooked politicians - they're as American as racism and colonialism, but I would not call Alfred a nice guy. His entire story arc is centered on his abandonment of family in service to his aspirations, which he atones for in the moment where he kills the men he had once been in league with to save his family.
This is one of those stories you just can't look away from. It throws so many bad things at you, and things just keep going more and more wrong, but somehow it still manages to give you hope that things will get better.
Susannah was shocked when Alfred revealed the news to her of Tristan and Isabel's upcoming marriage. Everything that she wanted with Tristan (to be his wife and to have his children), she saw him have that with Isabel Two. When they all came upon each other in town during the festivities and she saw them and their children, it crushed her. I believe that was the breaking point for her. That's why she said what she did when Tristan was in jail. She loved Tristan so deeply that her heart (and mind) couldn't handle not being with him. Her only way out of that was to end her own life because the pain was too unbearable. The soundtrack to the movie is always playing for me. James Horner is a master when it comes to movie scores. He also did Braveheart, Titanic, and Glory, to name a few. It was a joy watching you react to this great film, Kamilla. Can't wait for your next reaction.
“Set” in Montana but filmed in Canada west of Calgary as so many other films have been. I went out to be an extra for it but I was too tall. They wanted all the extras to be 5’ 10” or less. My buddy is in a few scenes as a soldier.
I wonder why the height requirement. I know they'll do this if they don't want a lead actor to seem as short as he is, but neither Brad Pitt nor Aiden Quinn is particularly short, or even average height.
One of my favorite movies. I hate stories that have too happy an ending. It's unrealistic. This ends on a bittersweet note. Not to mention the great cinematography. Perfect...

I love coming back to this movie once in a while. it's well made and memorable even after so many years. Movies made today should pay close attention, how good movies are made.
Susannah was an orphan, having lost her parents at a young age. I imagine that had an effect on her. Then she met a wonderful man at University in the form of Samuel. A man she loved and probably expected to spend the rest of her life happy with. Then, she fell in love with said man's brother, possibly even against her own better judgement. Then Samuel died, horribly. She fell in love with Tristan, who due to the loss of Samuel, was unable to love her the way she wanted to be loved. She married Alfred, probably because she knew he loved her. But the problem was she didn't love him back and his loving her didn't bring her any joy. Likely only sadness because she was exploiting his love for her own selfish purposes. As she said in her letters, she was unable to have children. Then she finds out that the man she loves is back and is now marrying a little girl now grown up, that Susannah once played with. This girl has everything Susannah ever wanted out of life. A loving husband who she also loves, the man she loves, happiness and children. And in her jealousy she wishes this girl, who's really an innocent in all this, dead. Then it happens, she probably feels nothing but regret and misery. For destroying the lives of so many around her that she loves. Tristan, Samuel, Alfred (while she doesn't love him as a woman loves a man, she clearly cares for him), Isabelle, Colonel Ludlow, ever since her arrival, nothing but misery has befallen them. This is likely the thought process that goes through her mind throughout the movie, and up to her eventual suicide.

That part never really clicked before this viewing. It suddenly made sense with that piece of information and multiple viewings.
I remember the first time I saw this back in 1995. Cinematography wise, it is gorgeous. Truly one of the most picturesque movies ever made from that period. As for the story, it’s a gut punch every 15 minutes. It’s like a Shakespearean tragedy set in the Wild West. And by the end of it I was emotionally drained and spent. Yes, Pitt got the bulk of attention and it would be all too easy to envy him, but I learned long ago what most women, good women, love is confidence. Being comfortable in your own skin. Everyone in this picture gave a wonderful performance.

Fuckin A. 90's was an INCREDIBLE movie decade, and so underapreciated. If the 40's was the golden age and the 70's was the silver age, the 90's was one hundred percent the bronze medal winner.
This is one of those films that is so hard to watch. It crosses all the human emotions, it's pretty remarkable. I remember the first time I saw this when it came out on home video in '95 or '96...I was about 15 or 16 and it was such an epic story. The characters were so well written and cast. it's one of the best films of that era for sure.
Thank you for your reaction. Although I've seen this when it came out, only now I realise Isabel, the boys' mother, did not come back bringing her wedding dress when Susanna and Alfred got married, but she did return for Tristan and Isabel Two's wedding. Tristan was the important brother.
A good movie, but so sad. Much like "Platoon", I don't thinks a light hearted happy moment in the whole movie. Another story with a similar feel is the mini series "Lonesome Dove" from 1989. It has a great ensemble cast, good story, great acting, many unexpected incidences and really leaves you feeling emotional by the end. Maybe consider putting on your watchlist. Great reaction as always.
A lot of people these days don't have a taste for epic melodrama, so I'm glad you do. I'm just an old man myself now, but I cry each time I see this film--or a lovely reaction to it.
You mentioned that Brad Pitt always seems to get the women. I once read an article that classified actors in various groups. I don't remember all the classes, but I do remember two. Brad Pitt was the example of the Ladies' Man. He always gets the girl, is typically on the "pretty" side of handsome, and the women in the audience usually love him, but the men in the audience don't -- possibly out of jealousy. In contrast, George Clooney was the example of the Man's Man. He also usually got the girl and the women in the audience love him, but the men in the audience like him too and want to be his friend. I _did_ note, as I got older, that it was true that Brad usually starred in films that more women liked than men did -- like Thelma & Louise, Meet Joe Black, and this one.
I don't agree about men not liking him. I think he is an actor who both men and women have liked. His roles are not all the pretty guy. And he doesn't always get the girl. He's played some badass roles that men love. Fight Club, Snatch, Fury, Moneyball. I hear men talk about him with admiration.
This is one of, if not my favorite movie of all time. It has everything for me, History, good story, amazing scenery, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and good music.
My favorite movie. It is heart wrenching from all sides. I felt so sorry for Alfred, and Tristan…and even Susannah. Julia Ormond and Aidan Quinn were phenomenal. They all deserved Oscars.
One of my favorite modern dramas; has everything a movie needs. Excellent script, fantastic cast & the setting/cinematography are top tier. The sadness, despair & cruelty of life just hits you in this story.
Saw this when it came out and watch it occasionally and every time I question if I really want to. But it's just that good. It really shows how family members can have amazing traits, still be flawed and fragile, how relationships can wax and wane and that life will always be a surprise and not just joyful - but also shows that through all that love and forgiveness can't break those bonds you make. I would also suggest a movie called "Last Of The Mohicans" with Daniel Day Lewis. A period piece with some of the same themes and emotion.
The studio didn't want Aidan Quinn for the role of Alfred. But Brad Pitt stood up for him and told the studio that if Quinn wasn't in the movie, then he wouldn't be either.

As old dude, I have seen this movie million times already. Seeing your reaction and how felt like I was watching a horror movie is how i felt the 1st time. But movie is one of best story. Coincidently, I drove to from NJ to Great falls Montana last week . It is truly wild wild west there and thought about movie a little of course it did not look like back then as movie depicted. There were no cell phones to call and tell Alfred that he was coming over. How could Susana tell Alfred before he got home, that Tristan had come by. It's 1919 or so. Great reaction to such a classic movie..yes, very sad. The acting was great too.

Great movie. Great cast, Isabel Two is beyond gorgeous. Love Ormond too. Very deep film. Gordon Toottoosis (Canadian actor) makes it all work. The musical score too isi great.
I found Alfred incredibly attractive, with a steady head on his shoulders. He was the first to decide to go look after Samuel. Tristan did it after Susanna asked him to, although I believe Tristan would have done it anyway. I even admire his fierce attitude in making a change in government. Despite his father's views, he stood up for his beliefs and carved his own path. My only two faults with him were pining after a woman he knew didn't love him back (maybe it was due to low self-worth) and not getting out of government sooner after they killed Isabel 2.
Wonderful reaction! This is one of my favorite movies. I do wish that youtube didn't censor out words like suicide. They treat it like Voldemort's name in Harry Potter, as if not saying it means it won't be an issue.
This video came in a time of movie rental (VHS places). I skipped this movie so many times because of it's Finnish translation name. "Passions of the wind" Sounded like a too romance movie for my taste in that day. Afterwards I thing when I saw this it that this is one of greatest movies. I put the blame of Finnish translators that pick the crappy Finnish name fot a title so I didn't saw it earlier. Great movie! I'm so glad so loved it.

Watched yesterday with the fam. Wife and daughter HATED the “old brother”. 😂funny to hear a different take. “He was a jealous child that knew he wasn’t right for her. It wasn’t natural.” Hence the suicide. Well done. I’ve always loved this one. For the other side of Brad I always go to Snatch and 12 Monkeys.
This is yet another movie that spurred the love people have for Montana, not quite so much as 'A River Run Through It', all thanks to the scenery and beauty. I am happy to live in Montana, not far from Helena actually, but in western Montana on the lands that look very much like this film. To the people not from Montana, Montana is called "The Last Best Place" and for good reason. It's an amazing place to visit and if you do visit remember when you're done turn your butt around and go back to where to came from. 😉😁
Roger Ebert used to have this theory called “The Kevin Kline Mustache Principle”. If Kline wore a mustache, it was a comedy. If he was clean-shaven, it was a drama. I have one called “The Brad Pitt Facial Hair and Long Hair Principle”. If Pitt has facial hair or long hair or both, chances are it’s a very good movie. If he’s clean-shaven and has short hair, it’s almost always a dud. Granted, there are a few exceptions, but I think this is true. “Seven”? Phenomenal movie. “Seven Years In Tibet”? Meh. This one? He’s both, but mostly has the facial hair.
Back in the day for date nights I would always recommend to watch this and explain to the girl it’s a love story with Brad Pitt. They would naturally want to watch & I would get to watch this classic movie. This movie literally has everything in it for everyone…love story, war, bears, guns, bootlegging, scenery, lil nudity, drama, Native American’s, action, lil comedy, great cast & great director! It’s actually a guy film dressed up as a “chic flic”. Great reaction!

One of the epic trilogy of period films that I watch time and again...the other two being dances with wolves and last of the mohicans...

As much as I love Band of Brothers, Lonesome Dove is still # 1 in my book!
A lot of people these days don't have a taste for epic melodrama, so I'm glad you do. I'm just an old man myself now, but I cry each time I see this film--or a lovely reaction to it.
You mentioned that Brad Pitt always seems to get the women. I once read an article that classified actors in various groups. I don't remember all the classes, but I do remember two. Brad Pitt was the example of the Ladies' Man. He always gets the girl, is typically on the "pretty" side of handsome, and the women in the audience usually love him, but the men in the audience don't -- possibly out of jealousy. In contrast, George Clooney was the example of the Man's Man. He also usually got the girl and the women in the audience love him, but the men in the audience like him too and want to be his friend. I _did_ note, as I got older, that it was true that Brad usually starred in films that more women liked than men did -- like Thelma & Louise, Meet Joe Black, and this one.
I don't agree about men not liking him. I think he is an actor who both men and women have liked. His roles are not all the pretty guy. And he doesn't always get the girl. He's played some badass roles that men love. Fight Club, Snatch, Fury, Moneyball. I hear men talk about him with admiration.
This is one of, if not my favorite movie of all time. It has everything for me, History, good story, amazing scenery, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and good music.
My favorite movie. It is heart wrenching from all sides. I felt so sorry for Alfred, and Tristan…and even Susannah. Julia Ormond and Aidan Quinn were phenomenal. They all deserved Oscars.

One of my favorite modern dramas; has everything a movie needs. Excellent script, fantastic cast & the setting/cinematography are top tier. The sadness, despair & cruelty of life just hits you in this story.
Saw this when it came out and watch it occasionally and every time I question if I really want to. But it's just that good. It really shows how family members can have amazing traits, still be flawed and fragile, how relationships can wax and wane and that life will always be a surprise and not just joyful - but also shows that through all that love and forgiveness can't break those bonds you make. I would also suggest a movie called "Last Of The Mohicans" with Daniel Day Lewis. A period piece with some of the same themes and emotion.
The studio didn't want Aidan Quinn for the role of Alfred. But Brad Pitt stood up for him and told the studio that if Quinn wasn't in the movie, then he wouldn't be either.

As old dude, I have seen this movie million times already. Seeing your reaction and how felt like I was watching a horror movie is how i felt the 1st time. But movie is one of best story. Coincidently, I drove to from NJ to Great falls Montana last week . It is truly wild wild west there and thought about movie a little of course it did not look like back then as movie depicted. Legends of the fall. The movie to prove every human has 11 hearts. Since it rips them out one by one.
I found Alfred incredibly attractive, with a steady head on his shoulders. He was the first to decide to go look after Samuel. Tristan did it after Susanna asked him to, although I believe Tristan would have done it anyway. I even admire his fierce attitude in making a change in government. Despite his father's views, he stood up for his beliefs and carved his own path. My only two faults with him were pining after a woman he knew didn't love him back (maybe it was due to low self-worth) and not getting out of government sooner after they killed Isabel 2.
Saw this on TV as a teen, could never forget this movie. It's a peculiar one, and you ephathize with characters very much.

This video came in a time of movie rental (VHS places). I skipped this movie so many times because of it's Finnish translation name. "Passions of the wind" Sounded like a too romance movie for my taste in that day. Afterwards I thing when I saw this it that this is one of greatest movies. I put the blame of Finnish translators that pick the crappy Finnish name fot a title so I didn't saw it earlier. Great movie! I'm so glad so loved it.

This is yet another movie that spurred the love people have for Montana, not quite so much as 'A River Run Through It', all thanks to the scenery and beauty. I am happy to live in Montana, not far from Helena actually, but in western Montana on the lands that look very much like this film. To the people not from Montana, Montana is called "The Last Best Place" and for good reason. It's an amazing place to visit and if you do visit remember when you're done turn your butt around and go back to where to came from. 😉😁

I love this movie.
Roger Ebert used to have this theory called “The Kevin Kline Mustache Principle”. If Kline wore a mustache, it was a comedy. If he was clean-shaven, it was a drama. I have one called “The Brad Pitt Facial Hair and Long Hair Principle”. If Pitt has facial hair or long hair or both, chances are it’s a very good movie. If he’s clean-shaven and has short hair, it’s almost always a dud. Granted, there are a few exceptions, but I think this is true. “Seven”? Phenomenal movie. “Seven Years In Tibet”? Meh. This one? He’s both, but mostly has the facial hair.
Back in the day for date nights I would always recommend to watch this and explain to the girl it’s a love story with Brad Pitt. They would naturally want to watch & I would get to watch this classic movie. This movie literally has everything in it for everyone…love story, war, bears, guns, bootlegging, scenery, lil nudity, drama, Native American’s, action, lil comedy, great cast & great director! It’s actually a guy film dressed up as a “chic flic”. Great reaction!
