  • In this video we show you how to setup the Shure SM7B Microphone with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. We test to see if an inline preamp like the Cloudlifter CL-1 is required. We also show you how this combination sounds (3:43), plus we do a demonstration with the Scarlett 2i2 Air Button.

      First off, great video, thank you very much! There is just one thing i'm left wondering.. What happens if you put the gain on, on the scarlett device, without the cloudlifter? Would that get a very different result? Sorry if this is a wierd question, i'm quite new to all this tech.

      Hey I recently just got a Triton Fathed inline preamp & have the same Scarlet 2i2. The issue is I don’t hear anything when I plug the pre amp (48volt on). I increase the gain but get static noise. Is my preamp just busted?

    You have answered all my main questions about gain, cloudlifter, and basic setup. Thank you. I was curious about the Shure SM7B and would love to try this mic one day for voice overs. Just for comparison sake, I currently use an Aston Spirit microphone (price range is *roughly* similar). In my case (for the Aston Spirit and pop filter), i only put the Gain at level 6 on Focusrite 2i2 during Raw Recording in Pro Tools. I prefer to add an extra Boost 1.5db afterwards - once I haved cleaned up all the audio with Izotope RX. There are many ways of recording and treating audio in Pro Tools. I am not an Engineer but use plugins and a general setup recommended by Engineers. Ex. Noise Gate, Limiter-Compressor, Maxim (to limit ouput levels between -3db and -6db). Things are routed to a Bus. After I boost the clean audio clip 1.5db, i bounce the clip and things sound pretty decent to me in headphones and in my monitor speakers.

    Just picked up an SM7B with the Scarlett, and I would definitely recommend the cloudlifter. Just call out too the closer you are to this microphone the better it sounds, and you can get away with not cranking up the gain quite as much if you get closer. Nice vid!

    • @IzzyTheTanuki
      @IzzyTheTanuki Рік тому

      @@tunaqua You'll have to get a second XLR cable if you go with the Cloudlifter, the Cloudlifter also offers less gain than the Fethead. With the Fethead, you also get a layer of protection for your SM7B in case the phantom power decides to go crazy. Although, phantom power damage to your microphone isn't really something you need to worry too much about.

    Thank you for posting this video (all be it, months ago, lol). I guess my expectations were too high when dropping about $150 on the Cloudlifter. I have the same exact setup shown in this video. I went from fully cranked to max on my 2i2 to about 2PM on the gain knob with the CloudLifter (during streams and conference calls so listeners wouldn't think I wasn't heard loud enough). I guess the gain knob being at around 1PM-2PM on the 2i2 with the SM7B and CloudLifter is normal. Dare I say I have to put it at near 3PM so I'm loud and clear on conference calls with some headroom and not clipping. Overall, such a pricey setup but I guess it was worth it ($399 + $149 + $169 = $717 approximately minus taxes for the 3 things shown in this video - yikes).

    Nice video, thanks! Seems kind of like an ad for Cloudlifter, haha! Also, you mentioned Logic...did you mean Logic Pro, the DAW? Do you use Windows or Mac? Anyhow, I have an interesting comment:
    Got an AUDIENT EVO 8 last week. With these interfaces, (I tried a MOTU M4 three months ago), the Mic Preamps are pathetic overall. The volume I get is pretty piss poor as compared to my Mackie ProFX6V3 mixer with 2 in and 2 out USB. I suspect that a computer's USB port just not put out the power needed for these gadgets! Anyhow, what I really like with the EVO 8, is that the combo inputs happily ACCEPT CELL PHONE OR TABLET SIGNALS which the M4 line inputs don't! I'm sure it is the same with the Scarlett 4i4. I think the industry wants us to buy a mixer AND an audio interface! Ha! Wait till you try the new Mackie ONYX8 mixer, with 4 in and 4 out USB! Costs $500 but I believe it will blow all these dumb audio interfaces out of the water!
    But here's the WEIRD AND FASCINATING THING: I hooked up the EVO 8 (and oh, you can save your favorite settings, particularly the auto-gain, in a preset on the EVO 8 mixer software which comes free and goes hand in hand with it) and brought up Cakewalk, my favorite DAW. It is free, you know? :) I activated the Sonitus Reverb plugin. Nothing much different with the mic. I then clicked on "Echo" on. Wow, I almost fell off my chair! The Mic Preamp volume went up 300%, and I could even hear every creak in my chair! (have to use a headset, and not a speaker, to avoid that horrible screeching feedback that is usual with condenser mics) I use an old AKG C1000S phantom powered mic. I love its tonal quality so I don't need a new one. With reverb and echo on, my vocals sound far more intense and pleasing! Isn't this weird?! A tech expert at Audient had no idea why the reverb/echo of the DAW boosted mic inputs sooo much! Only problem now is to find a chair that doesn't creak, Haha! And I can't make any lip smacking noises or clear my throat either as all such sounds come clearly through! I was so pissed at these Audio interfaces until I discovered this! (a pop filter is a must by the way) It is too late now, but maybe I should have upgraded my mixer to the Allen and Heath ZEDi 10FX which would have cost $280 as compared to $200 for the EVO 8 but no big deal. For everyday use for practicing vocals I'll use the mixer, and the EVO 8 to record. I just love Cakewalk by Bandlab..did I mention it is free? 😜

      Not sure if this is solved already, but record the audio in mono, instead of stereo

      You can go to properties under recording tab in windows and set it to 1 channel. I had the same issue

    probably a stupid question but why cant u use that phantom power without the cloudlifter?

  • @Davers84
    @Davers84 2 роки тому

    Is the cloudlifter really necessary if the mic is right in front of your face? Your mic is sitting pretty low. I have mine on a boom arm where it can be in front of my mouth. I understand needing a boost if the mic is far away like in this video, but is it really necessary if it's closer?

    Will be doing voice over recordings into Audacity with an SM7B and Scarlett. I'm a former radio DJ and speak on top of the mic. Your voice sounds great, but you're several inches away from the mic. Do you think I'd need an in-line preamp?

    I’m having trouble setting my gain. I have a Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen, a Cloudlifter, and a Shure SM7b. If I turn the gain button on the Scarlett until it starts flashing green (per the instructions) then my meter on Audacity is in the red zone, around 0. If I turn the gain button on the Scarlett so that I reach approximately -15 on the meter on Audacity, the light on the gain button does not flash AT ALL. Any insights? Thanks.

    IT's weird though, I've seen several tests that show that the 2i2 and several other similar preamps actually have the least amount of background noise with the gain up to basically full. This is stating the opposite.

    I have this setup but want to record with iPhone. Any idea how to get it off mono or left speaker only?

    hey thanks for the video. really helpful.....question,......is there any other preamps you could recommend for someone on a tighter budget?

    • @vespa731
      @vespa731 3 роки тому

      If you intend to have just 1 XLR connection, I'd go with the Scarlett Solo. Even though that's still a tad over $100, the preamps on Focusrite interfaces are some of the cleanest I've ever used

    The 4i4 has 56db of gain. Is that enough to push the SM7b or would you still recommend a cloud lifter? Thanks.
