I just happened to buy my GO last year for $279. That was a couple months before all the PKs went up in price. I love my GO but $400 is a lot! Nice review!
Hi Tom. I had a conversation with you about a year ago about this grill. I’ve wanted one ever since it was introduced. Well, I finally got mine. I didn’t purchase before because of the price, but now I found it for $179. A local ranch store has severed their affiliation with PK since they just don’t sell well here in Wyoming. Everyone here is crazy for pellet grills. They have been carrying this and the original. Anyway, we had our first meal from it this morning (steak & shrimp) pretty good. It’ll take a bit of practice, but I think it will be a great addition to our grill arsenal. Thanks for all you do! Sterling
I bought the mini version of the PKGO grill this past summer. It's the PKGO Hibachi Grill. It was expensive....$200 Canadian (I live in Canada) and that was a sale price but it works great. The meat tastes way better than my Weber 18" charcoal grill. It's so soft, tender, and juicy. The only thing I wish it had was a lid like the original PKGO.
As someone who owns a few grills in this size and price this one is the cheapest @400. I also have the Hasty Bake Nomad 250 that's cost $500ish The C4 by mgrills is $500ish By the way I did a comparison video of the 3 you can watch on my YT..... another great vid Tom!
Got one about a year ago, and while it is fine the way you tried it, when used for two topless grills at once, melted the plastic folding table I had them on. I wish the bottoms / legs had some heat shielding / insulation. Fire bricks underneath do the trick, but that is even more cost and weight on a portable.
@@Yang1 most tabletop grills would require some sort of heat-safe foundation. I regularly cook on a few lodge sportsman grills, and a lot of heat hits the table despite there being legs. It would also melt a plastic table. Plus some grease will naturally trip out below. Anyone who bbqs on a plastic table, with most any grill, is taking a chance. If not from the ambient heat, you could damage your table by dropping small pieces of hot coal or just from the embers popping.
@@turtlepowersf really? none of the weber smokey joes/go anywhere grills melt the surface beneath. They overcame this design flaw by simply raising it higher from the surface below with longer legs.
Hey Tom! Watched every second of this because I too am interested. It's the PK Crab! LOL With the bottom vents open it looks like a crab, kinda, sorta? LOL I really want one because it will outlive me,..... but like You said...$400.00. Kinda hard to justify at this moment. Man......I was liking your thoughts on lowering the grate for that closer sear! 👍 Oh well.....Maybe next time when the PK guys are playing around on there design computer for their next gen, they will consider this option? 🤘 Great Vid Tom as always! Gotta Love the Aluminum Tubs.......and Gotta Love The PK!!! 👍 Metal On! \🔥/
Hey Tom. Great video. I'm glad I found it. I know it's been some time since you made this vid so I thought it might be good to add a few specs. Maybe pricing has changed because you can buy the PKGO from many sites, including PK for less than $340 including the FLIP KIT (free shipping). That's quite a difference since you get double the cooking surface of the portable Q and 4 times the warranty Weber offers for about $80 difference. For me, that's pretty substantial. Clearly, you didn't care for this product from the get go. Many times you commented 400 bucks. Frankly I don't get how "areyoulooney" who posted a year ago about the same time you made this vid got his for $279 and PK nipped you for $400.
Great comprehensive review - thanks! I don't really have a need for a portable charcoal grill because I already have a full size PK ($800) that's also very portable - - - PK = portable kitchen! I did find this little guy very charming and interesting though. I thought long and hard about when I would need something like this (tailgating, shoreline fishing, camping) and I couldn't come up with a time where my full sized PK wouldn't work. If I was ever in a situation where I needed to pack a whole lot of stuff and needed the tiny bit of extra room that this allows I could see that, but I'm still not sold - in most cases I could just build a fire on the ground. If anyone has a good need for this please let me know. Thanks.
Thanks for Watching Jim! I really think that those tight on room and want the longevity of a grill that won’t rust and can cook extremely well.. this maybe for them, The aluminum tub will last forever. Appreciate the feedback, Thanks
Great video Tom. Like others said, out of my price range but PK is good stuff. Question about using the vents on the lid when using as a grill. Can't adjust during a cook?
Nice looking but a little pricey for my taste. I'll take a Weber Master Touch w/ a Slow n Sear (or juts an SnS kettle) for less cash. Sure, the PK is portable, but how often do you need a portable grill? Especially one that costs $400?
when I got mine, I thought it would be a good alternative to a Mangal style grill for doing kabobs. This would be more multiuse than the Mangal. on the one hand, it did work out nicely for that with a couple of skewer holders, and some fire bricks underneath each hibachi style half. I learned that last trick the hard way though when I had a Chernobyl moment and the grills melted the table I had them on, which was a bit scary at the time. no harm done, unless you count buying a new table, but if you do plan to use them as two separate grills, stand apprised.
they seem cool. idk for small grills of this size I like the propane route. especially bc you don't always have an ash bin around and don't want to wait for a couple hours b4 you can pack it up. Got a charbroil grill2go and put some ceramic grill tiles in the bottom over the burner and holy hell is it amazing.
I have an original PK which is almost too small to indirect cook a whole spatchcocked chicken or more than two racks of baby-back ribs cut in half. The PKGO seems like it is made to cook hamburgers and if that's what I'm cooking I'll use my Weber Q1200 gas grill. But I do like the latches to hold the lid down during transport. That would be nice on the Q1200.
I like PK Grills, good looking and great function on airflow. But I think that's really expensive for this PKGO. I got an SnS Travel Kettle Grill, 18" 304 Stainless grill grates, and nice charcoal basket with great little details for under $200.
Hey Tom😃You and I are Chuck Eye Steak brothers😁I have always wanted a PK Grill but I do like this PKGP Portable one😀I like that you can get Grill Grates for it too😄Thank you Tom👍🏻Have a great weekend🙂ROCK ON!!!!!!!🤘🏻🤙🏻✌🏻
Did my first cook on the pkgo. Those split grills when turned upside down allow me to completely close the lid during a cook. The only thing I need to figure out is how to control the temperature. It takes less than half of a Weber chimney of charcoal to get that grill pipping hot.
I usually cook my steaks sous vide and then sear them on top of my Weber charcoal chimney with a grill grate on top. I'd rather use something like this...any suggestions for an alternative that is USA made?
Lodge sportsman grill. Cast iron will require some extra maintenance, but I love mine. Or if you want crazy high heat, you could always try a rocket stove. They have all types of designs sold on Etsy.
Yup pricey you bet but you will forget all about what you paid after you cook on it a few times like a good cast iron pan this thing heats evenly and heats up very fast with very little charcoal stake hamburger’s shrimp 🍤 chicken you name it I’ve done it all and it all comes out good no regrets getting it and this little grill will last a lifetime remember people bring this little grill to the SCA world championship cook off and have very good results
I take this to the beach, lake and work often, and it’s actually really convenient. Saves a lot of space in my truck. REALLY easy to clean. Far better taste than a propane grill. I really like it for what it is.
My thoughts are you said it. There’s a lot cheaper then that. And your right there way cheaper then the quality of this grill. I don’t own one but for the quality I would by over the others cheap ones.
Nice little grill but like you said it's expensive. If I'm going for portable charcoal I'll stick with my weber Go Anywhere. Great video and cook as always.
I agree with your review but esp the "not made in USA for the money" comment, on the flip side China makes good stuff and cheap stuff it all comes down to price, go to Wal Mart for the cheap 5hit they sell.
