What really impressed me about this movie is how the smiling is really easy to make unintentionally hilarious like it was in Truth or Dare, but instead it's genuinely terrifying every single time. That's no small feat.

The great thing about a “smile” used as a theme for mental illness in horror is that that’s what a lot of mental illness people feel they need to do. One thing I love about this movie is how it portrays how mental illness can lead you to traumatizing others no matter how much you try to prevent it. Now, I don’t want to excuse hurting people based on mental illness, you can’t simply say “sorry I have x disorder so I can’t help hurting you”, but the way that the main character desperately tries to isolate herself to avoid traumatizing someone else but fails in the end because her own mind tricks her is so painfully reminiscent of real life, and desperately trying not to let your symptoms affect other people’s because you know it’s not fair, you know it’s not right, you know you’re hurting them, but that doesn’t mean you always have the control to stop it.

  • @georgethomas4567

I still remember the creepy af marketing they had for this movie. They paid people to attend live sporting events and just stand there Smiling as wide as humanly possible the entire time just in case the camera would pan over them and it worked. There was several baseball games where you'd see 2 or 3 people standing there unblinking and looking into the camera smiling and it is generally unnerving to say the least. This movie looked so cheesey in all the trailers but it's actually really impactful and kinda heartbreaking if I'm being honest.

Know my favorite part about the themes of this story? The fact that victims smile right before ending their own lives is probably a subtle reference to the fact that when people who are struggling with that desire finally decide to commit, they actually cheer up. It's a smile, but it's absolutely a twisted smile with dark undertones.
And then, of course, when someone does take their own life when people aren't expecting it, it's some of the most traumatic shit you could possibly ask to experience. Seriously, there's so many connections to actual psychology in this movie, and treating it with a deathly serious tone was the absolute best choice for this premise.

@@carniethedat7071so, first of all, I fully agree with your point about the link to people who make the decision to kill themselves suddenly appearing really happy. I think the way that as soon as they hit the point of no return in the film they get that fixed grin, it’s just too perfect a metaphor to be accidental. But I don’t see people talk about that as much as they talk about the other themes in the film, so it’s nice to find someone with a similar mindset.
That being said, it’s a little funny that you’re upset at Kellie apparently doubting your reading comprehension when you’ve read their comment without realising they’ve tagged someone else. You know, just a smidge funny, just a little irony giggle.
Also, the person Kellie’s responding to both tried to ‘correct’ your point while completely misinterpreting it, and I’ve just seen them in another comment thread responding to someone talking about how at age 6 they saw their uncle decapitate their aunt before committing suicide with, essentially, “grow up and stop talking about your trauma online”, so honestly fuck that guy.

The idea that you're being "forced" to smile through your pain, having so many people discredit or downplay your experiences and fears, and feeling isolated and confused are all things that resonate with me. This movie is honestly a really good representation of the struggles of mental health. As someone who suffers from numerous disorders and issues this movie is one that highlights how unintentionally condescending a lot of people react to people like me by asking if we took our meds or saw our therapist as if that fixes anything. they downplay or disregard trauma that directly effects mental health and instead tell us to just be happy and smile because then they don’t have to deal with it, when all that really does is eat away at our mind until we’re to far gone and then people think we’re just crazy. I’ve never seen media depict the mental decline I’ve experienced time and time again and for that i really respect this movie for giving voice to the problems a lot of people like me experience.

James, don't apologize for the blurring. If anything it adds to the encouragement to actually watch the movie in it's full splendor instead of just watch the Kill Count, like you say in so many videos. I watched this movie months ago, and I really like it! I relate to a lot of the troubles Rose deals with throughout the duration of the watch.
Besides, the blurring doesn't change the fact that you're still trying to bring high quality content for your viewers. Instead of just going through the movie's major points and counting up the kills, it feels like we're sitting down and discussing movies with a friend, both the good and bad about them, and how much work goes into making them. So keep your head up! You're doing a great job!
Side note, as for the viewers: If you know you can handle horror movies, and you can handle themes that this one portrays, go watch it. When James recommends to watch a movie, even if it's a bad one, it's still better to just watch it then 'substitue' it with the Kill Count. I watched Ready Or Not because of James' recommendation, and it's one of my favorite horror comedies. So, watch the movies before you watch the Kill Count (If you can handle horror movies, gore, and uncomfortable themes of course.)

This movie motivated me to seek mental health counseling , say what you want about the movie’s ending but it did shine a light on what can happen to someone with unchecked trauma. When I was six years old I remember seeing my uncle decapitate his wife in front of the whole family and then shoot himself , my father was affected by it bad so he turned to drugs and soon he took his own life via OD , my cousin turned to drinking but luckily turned his life around but he cites that incident from when we were kids as the reason he turned to the bottle. I used to have nightmares about what happened but tried to just shrug it off , but I realized it affected my relationships with other people , I built walls to try to stop getting close to others cause I feared I would lose them in a vicious way like I lost my uncle and my aunt - it’s been a year now since I’ve been going to therapy , it’s a long road but it’s so worth it - I hope anyone who’s suffering with PTSD can find the necessary help God bless.

They did this at several stadiums the same night. The actors then stood up the whole game and just stared at the camera/on field with the trademark smile. My main gripe with this film is the whole thing of having the character explain the most deranged situations, while completely neglecting to use the facts they’ve gathered, when they’re supposed to be trying to convince others they’re telling the truth. Like I get it, the character is under a lot of stress, and so their behavior will appear erratic to everyone. But the scene with her sister is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. They just have the main actress show her sister a disturbing photo, but they don’t have her say “This has happened back to back with the same situation”. So the sister doesn’t believe her.
That sort of thing irks my nerves, and then honestly, even though there was constant scenery changes, it started to feel dull for me at certain points. Like I can’t describe it. Maybe it’s because they kept a heavy feeling through most of the film, which we know was intentional, but for me, if there’s not even one break, it starts to bore me after a while 🤷🏽‍♀️ so honestly I probably wouldn’t rewatch this film. But I still want to give Smile 2 a chance.

You can’t defeat it, there’s virtually no limit to its power, and as far as we know it’s only doing all of this just because it gets sadistic amusement out of it - none of that “needs to eat” stuff. The writing in these kill counts still never ceases to amaze me. The “damned smile” line when talking about Sosie Bacon’s character’s experience when Bacon was also in 13 reasons why. Top notch.

I really like the cast in this movie, especially the fact that little Rose/regular Rose and her mom really have similar features and you can believe that they are from the same family!

Appreciate your general authentic annoyance at the beginning. Shows you care and are frustrated for your viewers. Keep doing what you are doing James!

19:19 The yellow color signaling hallucinations may be a homage/reference to “The Yellow Wall Paper.” Which shares some similar overall themes.

This movie was the first in a long time to genuinely scare me. Most movies just have jump scares that startle you and then you forget them right after but something about this movie stuck with me after watching it.

I watched it in theatres and it was an empty cinema with just me and my friend there, and having one person with me is probably the only time ever where that is more scary than being alone 😂
