Awesome stuff Pete, great tutorial and your new recording setup is great, very clear video and and audio coming through....Studio Live Today is my daily "fix", giving me great tips and ideas and putting it to use. Thanks Mate :-) By the way, is your day job also to do with music?
Cheers Stephen. Yes, I've been working hard to start leveling up the video and audio. Glad that you're finding the tips and tricks useful. And my day job? Nothing to do with music actually. Sales and marketing in the utilities sector. I know, rock 'n rock right?! 😀🤘
Believe it or not Petye but I am 80 years old and just started taking an interest in synths, apps etc. I have just bought a irig keys 49 and have an ipad with some apps on it but I cannot get any sound at all from my set up . I have followed your tips on which lead goes where with no joy. I would very much appreciate it if you could suggest where I am going wrong, for instance do I need an amplifier or speakers.
Hi there my friend. Great to hear from you. I haven’t personally used the iRig Keys but from what I have seen it creates its own audio interface which means the sound will no longer come out of the iPad speaker, but will require headphones or monitor speakers to be connected. Any headphones will do, it my recommended ones are the Sennheiser HD280s which you can check out here - amzn.to/2YGcFfD Feel free to email me if you need some more support. I’m sure we can get you up and running. pete@studiolivetoday.com
Nice video very helpful thanks I have a question Did you try to use iM1 from korg app On iPad with a Arturia Keylab essential MK3 I’m try but won’t work
Hey there. I haven’t personally sorry. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you for your answer! I think I have figured it out. It look like the ipad air new generation disable the speakers while the lightning cable is plug. So I have put a 1/8 cable from my earphone output on my ipad to my monitor speaker! Now it work great. Never use garageband before. The only thing that I don't really like is the grand piano sound or the other piano sound for midi. I would have love a better sound. Maybe someday we will have it on ios. Thank you I will keep listening to your videos to learn about garageband :)
Hey Mark. It uses AA batteries but just for the phantom power. Otherwise it runs from bus power or an optional AC adapter. Check out this video for more of the basic information. ua-cam.com/video/KL7dlCqYxic/v-deo.html Will it replace my Stienberg UR12? Probably not overall but I’m keen to put it to the test on a whole song.
Hi Pete! Is it possible to output this into an amplifier or a mixer ? I would like to connect the keys through my Looper pedal , do you think it is possible? Or if you have Another idea for my setup !? Thanks Friend😁
Hey there. So yes, you can send the output to another device via the headphone out jack. The iRig Pro Duo would be an even better option as it has stereo TRS outputs. I talk about this sort of thing in this video - ua-cam.com/video/dyrxZrUeSEg/v-deo.html
Hey there. Thanks for watching and for your question. It is actually more difficult than you would think to do this. The easiest way is to have the sound recorded as a WAV or other audio file on one device, then use AirDrop to send it to another device. The app “AudioShare” is also very cool and can help you share between devices. To actually send audio from an iOS device you can just use the headphone out (or lightning to 3.5mm adapter). The input side is harder because iOS devices have a TRRS input which doesn’t support stereo in, so you would need some sort of audio interface with stereo inputs for the other device - ua-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/v-deo.html
Pete Johns thank you for the great reply!!! Slight problem, though, I have an irig pro I/O and I’m trying to play samples on my phone into the sampler in beatmaker 3 on my iPad. So I can use samples from UA-cam or any beatmaking app.
Okay. So the iRig Pro I/O is a single channel interface. You will be able to connect the headphone jack output of one device to the iRig connected to the other device and then sample the sound. It will work fine but you will only get a mono signal as you can only plugin a single 1/4” input in the iRig Pro I/O. Hope this makes sense.
Hi Pete, following your tips ,I have connected my ipad to my keyboard and it works great in a "live" situation.but is there any way I can control the volume with outside source and not have to use volume on ipad? cheers Terry
Hey Terry. Thanks for reaching out my friend. So you want a way to control the output volume of the iPad without using the iPad volume? If you’re going out through the iRig or any other audio interface you can use the volume control on the iRig or interface itself to control volume?
Hey @pete ..I have a 10 dollar Irish..but I don’t have a midi cable.(also it can’t be joined )in the 10 dollar iris....Just the way we connect an electric guitar I joined my Yamaha keyboard to the original through that guitar lead...and because of that I am getting sounds..which are already in my keyboard ...example drum kits and all...[I ALWAYS HAVE TO CHOSE A AMPLIFIER SELECTIONS...AND KEEP PLAYING THE BEATS WHICH IS REALLY TIRING....HOW TO LOOP THEM........ #### IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY THAT THROUGH THIS CONNECTION TYPE I CAN MAKE MY KEYBOARD AS A MIDI ONE..SO I CAN RECORD PURE SOUNDS..THE WAY YOU DID IN THIS VIDEO ???
Thank you 🙏🏽😇❤️Pete Johns. Is there anything you could recommend for charging then that would complete the iPad charging problem and ensure that I have a stable rig on stage🙏🏽
Yes, the official powerbridge would be a good solution but is quite expensive. I'm experimenting with some other optoins at the moment which I will share on the channel once I have anything to share.
How is IRIG PRO quality when it comes to recording vocals? I had the IRIG PRE for 2 years and it was really good. I ordered IRIG PRE HD couple of weeks back and was disappointed with the vocal quality..I felt that IK had used too much preamp. I am really interested to know if IRIG PRO sound quality when recording vocals is better than IRIG PRe HD
Hmmmm.... hard to compare directly as I haven’t tried both; but o was very impressed with the iRig Pro I/O in testing. Will be doing more videos showing it soon so watch this space.
Blimey! Still rocking the Evolution eKeys 49. Don’t see many of those around now. Was my first ever MIDI keyboard when I started on computer music, later joined by one of those 16 knob MIDI controller. I think it was the US-16? Fantastic little device.
It’s getting close to an antique these days I reckon! Would like to replace it but I juts have no reason to do so! Apart from being a little yellowed it’s pretty much as good as it was day one. And I even bought it second hand!!
I've been a big fan of the iRig line since the iRig 2, (which I still use), and have since gotten the Duo version of the iRig I/O as my backpack audio interface. The one and only complaint I have about IK Multimedia's design choices is their decision to use 2.5mm jacks for their MIDI breakout connectors. I hope that they'll adopt the much more usable 3.5mm TRS (Type A, IIRC) plugs in the future so we can use TRS midi with a pair aux-in plugs (which are dirt cheap compared to the 5-pin DINs).
I did everything exactly like the video. The light blinks blue, monitor is turned on and it won’t make any sound from my keyboard. I can’t find anything online on what else to try. Help please!
Thanks for this information - Two questions: 1-Considering all this would I then be able to still add the XLR for recording in that free slot on the IRig? 2-What if my midi controller keyboard had no midi output slot? I’m asking because so have a particular midi controller in mind and I want to be able to use it with a mic as well
Hey there. Yes, you can set up using a powered USB hub and connect both a MIDI keyboard and audio interface at once. I talked about it your question in today’s Home Studio Q&A show - ua-cam.com/video/nXOS2WvX9Wo/v-deo.html
I do not know why but in the box I got other short midi cables I tried to insert the cable into my synthesizer several times and it did not fit What to do?
Hi. I just purchased this interface (the duo one) but my midi keyboard has the usb 2.0 on the back, not a din 5 pin. Do you know if there’s any way to use adapters and make this work? The goal is to be able to plug my XLR mic and my midi keyboard into an interface that can then be plugged into a phone and/or MacBook Pro so I can record both at the same time/ or with the phone, record the audio directly in while videoing. Thanks so much!
Hey there. So, you can use a powered USB hub to plug in the keyboard via USB and an audio interface at the same time. This video will help. ua-cam.com/video/Vomprgxr0ac/v-deo.html
Unfortunately not. There is a separate power adapter you can buy for the iRig to power it which will reduce the usage, but no way to charge your actual device.
I’m perhaps not understanding exactly what you mean then sorry? Maybe check the documentation that came with the iRig to check you got the right stuff?

Is there a way to connect an E Drum kit to iRig that only has USB MIDI rather than the 5 pin?
You’d need to connect directly via a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter or use an adapter. ua-cam.com/video/l-g5UEsn6Ws/v-deo.html
Will this work with a regular keyboard not just a midi controller ?
You will need a stereo audio interface to record a keyboard that’s not MIDI. Check out this video for info - ua-cam.com/video/Dbz8sxuy5X0/v-deo.html

Hi Pete! Is iRig compatible with Akai MPK 249? Thanks!
Hey there. So I’m not 100% sure, but I’m pretty sure this unit is class compliant so would work with MIDI.
Does it come with a usb-c connection to the irig?
Howdy. Nope, just USB-A unfortunately. You would need a USB to USB-C adapter to get it working with USB-C enabled devices.
What is midi in and midi out?
The ability to send MIDI audio data to your recording software from your keyboard (MIDI in) and form the software back to your keyboard (MIDI out).
USB vs Midi keyboards/input?
I go with USB for convenience most of the time, and because 3 of my 5 MIDI controllers (yes, I’m a little ashamed by that number!) are USB only.
can I connect to Android phone
