The reason why the shoes have protection is to protect toes from sliding over the court. Tennis players can slide on the court for reaching the balls and it helps to damage toes.

TOE GUARD: Where manufacturers add extra rubber material to the front of a shoe for toe drag protection. It often wraps from the outside to the upper. HEEL COUNTER: Usually a plastic or composite material that stiffens and reinforces the heel area. A stiffened heel improves fit and stability.

I'm a tennis player... Think it's so cool you're jumping at Wimbledon! The shoes have the extra rubber for protecting against toe dragging while on hard court. If there was not any rubber at the toe and only cloth, the seam would tear very quickly.

Haven't seen it explained yet so the reason for the toe being built up on a tennis shoe is because the toe is very often dragged during a serve and it wears out the toe very quickly unless reinforced.

When serving your feet suddenly launch forward along landing. Also there's a lot of sudden movements in tennis. This is why both by big toenails are always bruised or broken. This is why you need toe protection in tennis.

Toe Protection: playing on a clay court players often slide the last bit towards the ball just before they hit it. They slide with their front foot flat while dragging the rear foot far behind them either with the inner edge or the top of the toes dragging over the clay surface. Just look for "slide" and "clay" on YT.

Have you been to King James Palace? Beautiful tennis court that’s 400 years old. I don’t like tennis but I really enjoyed seeing it. Pink granite floor and silk rope net. Back then they used bare hands, not racquets.

When playing tennis, one often drags the tip, or top of the toes on the follow through of the shot. I always wear the top of the shoe down just above the big toe long before wearing down the sole of the shoe.
