Not necessarily, no. ASL isn't known by the majority of people, so finding someone to teach you can be hard. My ASL teacher has been deaf her whole life and didn't learn ASL until later in life because no one in her small town and surrounding area knew it well enough to teach her and her family. It's far more common than you'd think for people to be Mute/NV and not know sign language.

She either didn't know a lot, or they directed her not to use it. Furthermore, ASL is easy to learn right now because of UA-cam. I feel like Dhar Mann is considerate to the deaf community by not casting a hearing actress in a deaf role - though they did mention Dorothy's character isn't deaf. Overall, I think it was a poor decision by the writers to force the plot into this "hidden camera" stuff. Had nothing to do with the language or the actress.

Definitely agree. She seems nice enough but the reason I like this series is because of how laid back Jarvis is. Also I appreciate the fact that he pauses the video when he wants to talk instead of talking over it.

I feel like the “you see” / “so you see” marking problem would be solved if it was implied that they needed to be said together (or in relatively quick succession). The “/“ implies an “either or” situation. Replacing it with “and” or “+” I feel would work better.

That's the one thing I dislike most about these videos. If these are really made to teach and educate people, then it's really harmful. You can't just go through life saying something is wrong and expect someone to change their ways. Sometimes you have to report these things. Otherwise, you'll end up looking like an accomplice or complicit in the criminal act. Because that's totally what children and non-English speakers should be learning, right?

I mean, depending on the severity of care needed, chores and simple tasks could be the only thing needing done. Say, the patient is still ABLE to move, just not quickly and they tire fast. That can really affect your balance and your ability to be on your feet all day, but you'd still be able to take yourself to the restroom or something like that.

Arguing and telling the truth didn’t help, so the hope/desperation/fight in him evaporated. The reality of getting fired *at the very least* has sunk in. The shock and numbness of being accused, his community feeling that he betrayed them (which he kinda did), being handcuffed and heading to the county jail. He’s realizing that if he went ahead and ratted out his friend off the bat, he could have avoided almost all of this (except standard police/trial procedure) and protected his workplace and the seniors he’s supposed to care for, to look out for P.S. They need to put whiteboards everywhere that woman goes, so she can write to communicate. Whiteboards should be less painful for arthritic hands, and certainly future residents could use them. My hope for this fictional community is for it to get better at protecting and making life easier for the seniors. Not bringing a single woman two heads of lettuce
I saw a comment on one of the D Mann predictions videos that provoked thought. It was about how the endings of these videos have one bad person unbelievably turn over a new leaf, and it’s not satisfying. I think that’s why I love this video so much (plus Addie). This video has a whole retirement community get saved from theft, accusations, an innocent man being saved from getting arrested/fired at the very least, AND the bad guy learns his lesson. It saves a community of people who are presented as being weaker from the person who was actually stealing from their homes. It was a bigger impact than the terribly handled race videos. Plus, it showed off the intelligence, resourcefulness, and capability of an “elderly” woman with a disability. That’s a lesson kids could actually pick up from this video

No "mute" isn't really the right word (speech-language pathology grad student currently interning in a special education program at a public school). "Non-verbal" is generally used, but some people prefer "non-speaking." As with everything, the best course is to ask the person how they refer to themselves. Lots of people who can't or don't speak communicate in other ways.

I wanted to check on Jarvis' question on whether or not "mute" is an okay term; from what I could find it's misleading when used to refer to people with speech disabilities, since their vocal chords usually still work to some degree. Also, some people use "mute" to refer to the deaf, which is much less accurate for a similar reason as before. I can't really say anything about how offensive it might be; I've met deaf people, but no one with speech disabilities.
As far as I know _mute_ is fine (although similar to _blind_ it may be misleading as I'm sure there's some sort of continuum here of varying speaking ability). _Dumb_ would be the outdated/inappropriate term.

I feel like the “you see” / “so you see” marking problem would be solved if it was implied that they needed to be said together (or in relatively quick succession). The “/“ implies an “either or” situation. Replacing it with “and” or “+” I feel would work better.

Like when the friend who wasn't stealing got arrested, she like caught it out of the corner of her eye and was like "what?? whatt??" because she didn't even see the past minute or so. People were telling her they couldn't hear, too. And Jarvis also had no idea what was going on because he didn't go back. Like when she's with Jarvis she comments on it and I like her fine, but Jarvis leaves and she loses track of everything.
Problematic lesson: It's okay to help hide stealing if you know it took place. He stayed silent about the thefts... and got promoted...
That's the one thing I dislike most about these videos. If these are really made to teach and educate people, then it's really harmful. You can't just go through life saying something is wrong and expect someone to change their ways. Sometimes you have to report these things. Otherwise, you'll end up looking like an accomplice or complicit in the criminal act. Because that's totally what children and non-English speakers should be learning, right?

Arguing and telling the truth didn’t help, so the hope/desperation/fight in him evaporated. The reality of getting fired *at the very least* has sunk in. The shock and numbness of being accused, his community feeling that he betrayed them (which he kinda did), being handcuffed and heading to the county jail. He’s realizing that if he went ahead and ratted out his friend off the bat, he could have avoided almost all of this (except standard police/trial procedure) and protected his workplace and the seniors he’s supposed to care for, to look out for
P.S. They need to put whiteboards everywhere that woman goes, so she can write to communicate. Whiteboards should be less painful for arthritic hands, and certainly future residents could use them. I saw a comment on one of the D Mann predictions videos that provoked thought. It was about how the endings of these videos have one bad person unbelievably turn over a new leaf, and it’s not satisfying. I think that’s why I love this video so much (plus Addie). This video has a whole retirement community get saved from theft, accusations, an innocent man being saved from getting arrested/fired at the very least, AND the bad guy learns his lesson. It saves a community of people who are presented as being weaker from the person who was actually stealing from their homes. It was a bigger impact than the terribly handled race videos. Plus, it showed off the intelligence, resourcefulness, and capability of an “elderly” woman with a disability. That’s a lesson kids could actually pick up from this video

No "mute" isn't really the right word (speech-language pathology grad student currently interning in a special education program at a public school). "Non-verbal" is generally used, but some people prefer "non-speaking." As with everything, the best course is to ask the person how they refer to themselves. Lots of people who can't or don't speak communicate in other ways.

I wanted to check on Jarvis' question on whether or not "mute" is an okay term; from what I could find it's misleading when used to refer to people with speech disabilities, since their vocal chords usually still work to some degree.
Also, some people use "mute" to refer to the deaf, which is much less accurate for a similar reason as before.
I can't really say anything about how offensive it might be; I've met deaf people, but no one with speech disabilities.
As far as I know _mute_ is fine (although similar to _blind_ it may be misleading as I'm sure there's some sort of continuum here of varying speaking ability). _Dumb_ would be the outdated/inappropriate term.
