  • Here's a commercial for Ponderosa Steakhouse featuring Phyllis Diller.
"How Do You Do What You Do?"
This aired on local Chicago TV on Sunday, July 27th 1980.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,500+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

Back when $2 still got you a full meal and every table had an ashtray.

For reference: $1.99 in 1980 is the equivalent of $6.75 today.

In January 1980 it would be closer to $8 but by the end of the year $6.75 would be about right. I remember getting 10% interest on my bank account back then so there was some pretty nasty inflation at that time. 30 year fix rate mortgages were running around 15% or 16% with 2 points.

In today's money, that's only $7.23! How in the world did they do that?

I had a manager when I worked in my first grocery store deli, he used to be a manager at a Ponderosa in Minnesota. Plus the late Phyllis Diller was one of my favorite comediennes. She played a character on The Bold And Beautiful also. She was sally Spectra's best friend.
