  • Rovers signed attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics from Peterborough United in August 2022 for a fee believed to be around £2.5m. The signing was initially met with some reservation from the Rovers fans, particularly as the club had not spent such fees on permanent signings for a few years, and also due to the fact that Sammie was arriving from League One.
Needless to say, Sammie more than proved any doubters wrong with his displays in a Blackburn Rovers shirt over the next two years. Signed to play under Jon Dahl Tomasson, Sammie's all action, energetic style of play perfectly suited the Danish manager's system. Sammie's enthusiasm and will to win meant that he would often lead the press and encourage team mates to get involved alongside him. His pace also made Rovers an effective side on the counter attack, with some likening Szmodics to a Championship version of Craig Bellamy.
His first goal for Rovers came on his debut, away at Swansea City in August 2022, helping Rovers to a 3-0 win. Sammie made 41 appearances in all competitions during his first season as a Rovers player and scored seven goals as Rovers narrowly missed out on the play offs. The two Sammie performances and goals that stood out the most both came in the FA Cup. The first being a memorable win against then Premier League, Leicester City, and a valiant effort against Sheffield United in the Quarter Finals.
The 2023/24 season was to be a blistering one for Sammie Szmodics on an individual level as he ended the season being the Championship's top scorer having scored 27 League goals. This was six goal more than second placed Adam Armstrong. Despite Rovers changing manager and hurtling towards the drop zone, Szmodics produced the best season of his career, scoring 33 goals in all competitions in 48 appearances. His run of six goals in four games in November 2023 saw him pick up the Championship Player of The Month Award. Sammie also struck again in the FA Cup, netting a hat-trick and a brace against Cambridge and Wrexham respectively. He deservedly earned a place in the Championship Tea of The Season at the end of the campaign.
When Rovers looked down and out, it was Sammie Szmodics that stepped forward time and again to drag Rovers to valuable results in their battle against relegation. None more so than the two major wins that Rovers picked up away at Leeds and Leicester. Both games in which Sammie Szmodics scored vital winning goals for Rovers. Rovers were faced with a difficult task of having to win at Leicester on the final day of the season, Failure to do so would result in relegation. However, Szmodics put in a heroic performance on the day scoring twice to give Rovers a 2-0 win and Championship safety.
Szmodics began the 2024/25 season in the same vain as the previous one, scoring three goals in two goals. Sadly, Rovers were unable to keep hold of him, as Premier League Ipswich tabled a £9m bid for the player, which was accepted by the club in mid August 2024.
The Rovers fans will never forget what Sammie Szmodics did for the football club and his efforts, particularly in those crucial games, are much appreciated.
Sammie Szmodics made 91 appearances for Rovers, scoring 43 goals. Here are those goals.

He was clinical at Rovers. Fair play to him. I wasn't expecting that when we signed him.

@@rovers9585 Indeed, he'll be missed good luck to him in the Prem. This will be a huge challenge for him at Ipswich.
