Odd that this news item seems to suggest that the choir of St Paul's consists only of boys! What did the men; the Vicars Choral, think about it all? As a deputy, I sang there in the late 70's & found Barry Rose very inspiring!
He probably wasn't posh enough. He is a working class boy made good. A lot of establishment snobs in the church still. Also there could have been a clash of egos and a resentment of the attention he was getting. Sacking him for recording popular music with the boys would be laughed out of any employment tribunal.
Barry was a pioneer of widening the activities of the choir to provide greater interest for the boys. The final straw I believe was the singing on Paul McCartney's Frog Chorus single where the choir sang on it. The Chapter did not like their ecclesiastical/sacred choir singing this stuff. I am sure he new why he was given the push though. Nowadays it probably would not happen
