  • As a Maui native, Kumu Hula (hula teacher) Kaui Kanaka’ole comes from generations of hula teachers and performers. She brings this hula passion and expertise to her role as the Executive Director of Ala Kukui, a Hawaiian cultural retreat in the historic town of Hana, Maui.
Performing hula is more than a dance, it is a way to connect with Laka, the akua (deity) of hula. The preparation process for hula, from gathering natural materials to making lei to dancing, and returning what was used back to nature, is all about respect.
Kaui hopes that when visitors end their stay at Ala Kukui, they leave more mindful of their connection to the environment and recognize the importance of giving back than when they arrived.
