  • The true beauty behind Hawaii’s white sandy beaches and its green bright mountains.
    DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Hello, Sam Potter here, I’ve wanted to tell the story of home since I’ve picked up a camera. This may only be a sliver of what we have to share with the world, but I’m proud of what we’ve captured. This all started with a conversation between Nai (Nainoa Langer) and I as we sat above a waterfall overlooking my childhood swimming hole. I said, “We should start a travel-based series that gives people an in-depth look at cultures around the world,” in hopes that we could create something that encourages greater appreciation, understanding, and respect between cultures. His response was “Let’s start with home.” So, we reached out to Beautiful Destinations with the idea, and boom, here we are, (and what I mean by boom is months of hard work and the many, many hurdles that come with planning and executing a film project, hahaha) but nevertheless, here we are.
My first thought when it came to explaining a place as complex as Hawaii was people need to understand that there are two parts to the culture, the traditional side, and the modern day side. Our modern-day life represented by Kimi Werner, demonstrates our values, the way we care for each other, for our community, and for our environment. The traditional side represented by Micah Kamohoalii, shares a little about the history of Hawaii, the practices of the Hawaiian people, and most importantly, Aloha, what it means and how that too can be practiced.
Nai and I are very excited to be working with Beautiful Destinations to bring you stories like this from around the world. Our goal is to travel with respect, humility, and curiosity so that we may gain new perspectives, and hopefully we may all become a little more understanding and loving towards one another.
If you’d like to follow Nai and I as we travel around the world, you can subscribe to Beautiful Destinations’ UA-cam channel and follow us on Instagram.

“On an island you can feel isolated from the world. And maybe it’s in that isolation that we find togetherness. But Earth is an island in itself. One people. One planet. Aren’t we all in this together?”
Beautifully said. I took away a lot from this video. Thank you.

I had the opportunity years ago to live on Oahu and the Big Island. I took so much for granted then, and I recently went back because my heart yearned for the ocean. There is a part of me that has never left and I took Hawaii in my heart. My boys were raised there and we moved back to mainland because of the recession. Fast foward 10 years, so much has changed. My sons lost their father who grew up on the islands and now rests in Waimea. This video you put together sums up everything the world needs right now. You did such a beautiful job taking every emotion I feel about such a wonderful jewel in the sea. I shed a tear or two. Thank you for sharing your story and I hope my sons grow up to carry the love and aloha you carry. Mahalo 🥰

I showed this today in class. We had the chance to chose a country or culture. I chose Hawaii not only because it is a beautiful island but when u saw this video I wanted to show the whole class they Hawaii isn’t just a paradise with amazing beaches, but an island with an amazing culture. It was the first time that my class just watched and didn’t talk they were so silent. After it was done they clapped because the thought it was beautiful I agree. Thank you for making this amazing video it teaches a lot of people from around the world how amazing Hawaii is.

As part Indian I understand how Hawaiian people feel towards the US. It's difficult for me being part Cherokee and part Scottish and American I have a mix of culture's. Unfortunately growing up I was never taught the different ways but I'm beginning to learn the different heritage's that I was born with. I too believe in Mother Earth and I believe in God. I believe that we should do everything humanly possible to protect her and all living creature's. I loved listening to your many adventures and look forward to hearing more. God bless
