This song has so many meanings and different interpretations but a couple things I remember are: she is talking about mental health, about how we think someone is healthy because they look good but maybe they suffer in the inside. She also protests against how artists are treated in her country (they cant easily have health insurance) so thats why she says in the song "the artist must be healthy" like, if their not healthy, their on their own. It also had a couple references to corona... And there was many more things I dont remember. But it was such a good entry and she is a QUEEN! Btw I love your eurovision weeks!!

    Hello, Serbian here😊
I wondered if you would come across this performance on your ESC journey.
To answer some of your questions:
    1. She sings in Serbian but uses Latin in the beginning and in the end of her song. The title of the song is obviously in Latin too, part of the proverb "Mens sana in corpore sano" (A healthy mind in a healthy body)
    2. Serbian can be written in both Latin and Cyrillic letters and we use both on a regular basis.
    3. She actually won an award at Eurovision for the lyrics of this song. The lyrics were widely interpreted by so many people in many different ways, which is the purpose of art.
    4. Serbian people like sarcasm and its ingrained in our humor. And we are tall on average, like your professor. We aren't cold though, that's just her😂
    5. The most interesting explanation of this song was done by the youtube channel "Overthinking it".
For those of us who grew up having ESC in our lives, it is fun to see you discovering it and enjoying it. Keep it up❤

The version of this song performed at the national selection has English subtitles and watching this with the translation is actually quite powerful.
Afaik the song was inspired by how in serbia an artist is not entitled to health insurance. She starts the song talking about how society expects us to "look healthy" but not necessarily to "be healthy" because looking healthy is beautiful but you can't be healthy if you cant even go to the doctor. She ties mental health into it then at the end as you can have a perfectly healthy body, and therefore be beautiful and meet society's needs for looking healthy, but still be unwell mentally. As long as you look the part then nobody cares

The towel dance thing was a nod to Serbian folklore dance that’s typically done with a handkerchief but as this was her callout for all the hypocrisy during covid (“wash your hands and stay inside but we don’t care if you don’t have health insurance”) it was mixed with a choir dressed as orthodox monks.. death joke? You be the judge. Oh and Joe’s teacher sounds very typically Serbian! Cold, funny, blunt and tall ❤

I think it's a interesting song and act, it's been a little while since I heard it and if I remember it right it's a commentary on how obsessed society is with physical health, obviously it's good to be healthy but in many cases it's obsessive or even just marketing, while also mental health often gets neglected.

  • @jiipai7952
    @jiipai7952 4 місяці тому +6

this song actually represents our obsessions. washing hands over and over again is an example of that, which is what the artist does throughout the song. we as a society have a lot of obsessions and it is a sick mind's product. especially during the pandemic, we were so obsessed with washing hands that we created sick minds. our bodies stayed healthy, but our minds were not healthy anymore. this is what the song is about basically. I don't necessarily agree with it, but people do, so I just wanted to explain it

You've said a lot of correct points... So the song is in Serbian (except for the title which is in Latin and a few phrases in the end of the song). Serbian is indeed a language. It is a Slavic language. It is similar to Russian and Polish in some way (although much different in other ways). And Serbia does use Cyrillic alphabet just like Russia and Bulgaria :)

    • @Vescilla
      @Vescilla 4 місяці тому +11

As a person from Poland I can tell you I could pick up maybe one in ten words from Serbian I think (the phrase she keeps repeating "biti zdrava" is similar to "być zdrowym", to be healthy), it's definitely similar phonetically that's why people think all slavic languages are similar but they're not similar enough to be mutually intelligible, that's for sure.

This song is also critic to WHO during Corona when people had to follow strict rules about hygiene but it completely was devastating for our mental health. Her constant washing of hands points to our unhealthy state of mind. It led us to be focused on our physical appearance while ignoring our inner being. Turning hand left right is sign language for clapping.
Serbia also had song about women being abused and badly treated in 2016. Goal was to raise awareness.
Serbia won Eurovision in 2007 and was second in 2004 and third in 2012.

OMG QUEEN GODSTRAKTA THE HEALTHY ARTIST THE MOTHER THE LEGEND THE MOMENT
This performance was genius: the washing of the hands reminds me of the italian phrase "lavarsene le mani come Ponzio Pilato" which translates as "washing your hands about it like Pontius Pilato did" (= ignoring Jesus and not caring about his situation and fate). In the context of the song, since she is wearing a nurse outfit, this could represent a health care system that leaves behind some people, not caring about them, and that "washes its hands" about them.
Plus, I see a HUGE Marina Abramovich influence and we stan a performative art song.
The themes are various: health, obsession with celebrities and appearnce, strive for physical health, worry for not having health insurance, social injustice, mental health.
In corpore sano is part of the latin phrase "mens sana in corpore sano" and yes, the background singers give huge priests vibe... and what is the language of catholicism? Latin... her mind. Her brain works full time omg

The title of the song is in Latin (it`s a famous proverb "Healthy mind in a healthy body"), and also the last four verses, that sums up the meaning of the song:
Mens infirma in corpore sano - A sick mind in a healthy body
Animus tristis in corpore sano - A sad soul in a healthy body
Mens desperata in corpore sano - A desperate mind in a healthy body

This song was a protest against restrictive nature of Health Insurance in Serbia and the lengths people need to go to be healthy enough to get cover. its a stunning piece of art pop as protest and probably one of my all time eurovision favourites. Serbia seem to kill it at this high end artistry.

  • @RoderickARD

Each element, each color, each object placed on stage, is an exquisite and complex understanding. She is clearly not singing, if she is not telling a critique of the artists and how they should confront the Serbian public health system. They themselves are not covered and must fend for themselves. Wow, one never wants to get sick! That's why they should be as healthy as possible.
The story is based on the fact that one of the members died as a result of an illness, and she could not be treated in the public health system.
What is Megan Markle's secret? I want to walk through the park in a pretty dress and appreciate the flowers in the sun.
An artist must always be healthy. But at the cost of what? A sick mind in a healthy body?...so, now what!?
Wow, what meaning and power this song has, which at first is confusing, hypnotic, bizarre... but when you get the lyrics and can put them in every minute of the stage. Mental explosion.

This song was written during/after covid when handwashing was a BIG thing. And as others said before in the comments, mental health issues and a lot of other types of healthcare that got less money.

Yes! Another Eurovision week. The washing of the hands to represent trying to stay healthy and repetitive behaviours.

Wonder if 🇩🇪 Germany 1998 Guildo Horn is gonna make this week's list. Or 1979 Dschinghis Khan...

Now I think of it, these are also candidates for this week's top5:
      🇫🇮Finland 2006 Lordi
      🇦🇹Austria 2014 Conchita Wurst
      🇮🇸Iceland 2019 Hatari
      🇦🇺 Australia 2019 Kate Miller-Heidke (Zero Gravity)

Not surprised at all 😄 The performance is literally like an art performance (it is inspired by works of Marina Abramović). The scene is dark and static like a classical theatre. The topic is serious with a solid dose of sarcasm. Part of the song is in Latin. Her voice is deep and the delivery is purposefully monotonous. It's a wacky-artsy song abt health insurance and how it impacts our lives. The fact that it went to ESC and even got so much attention and points is pretty amazing. It's a huuuge crossover. I liked the song, but being from Balkan, I understood the lyrics, the background and the type of humor. There are so many specific details. When you see the subtitle "I'm left on my own", she actually says "Nemam knjižicu" (I don't have the health insurance card, colloquially "booklet", like a small pass). We all understand what knjižica is, and the implications of being outside of health insurance system.
Fun fact, the song was incredibly popular among kids. My friend told me "my kids are incessantly repeating the chorus: 'biti zdrava! biti zdrava! biti biti biti'" (literally: to be healthy! to be healthy! to be, to be, to be) Go figure 😄
