The Fennek 4x4 reconnaissance vehicle is a further development of the Multi-Purpose Carrier (MPC) originally developed by Dutch company SP aerospace and vehicle systems as a private venture.
Following extensive trials with prototype vehicles, the ARGE Fennek consortium - comprising SP aerospace and vehicle systems and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann of Germany - was awarded a contract to produce 612 Fenneks.
The German Army has ordered 202 vehicles and the Netherlands 410; the first Fenneks were delivered in 2003. There are two final assembly lines, one in Germany and one in the Netherlands.
The baseline Fennek is optimized for reconnaissance and is provided with a retractable mast-mounted sensor pod that contains day/thermal optics and a laser rangefinder.
A land navigation system and extensive communications equipment is installed in the vehicle and this allows information to be relayed in real time. The sensor package is provided by Rheinmetall Defence Electronics and, if required, the sensor head can be removed from the vehicle and deployed up to 40m away.
German vehicles are armed with 40mm automatic grenade launchers, while 12.7mm machine guns are installed on the Dutch ones.
The Fennek's hull is of all-welded steel armor, which protects the crew against 7.62mm armour-piercing attack and shell splinters.
A wide range of equipment is fitted as standard, including a rear-mounted camera, a nuclear, biological and chemical defensive system, a winch, run-flat tyres, an air-conditioning system and a fire-detection and -suppression system.
Both countries will also deploy specialized versions. Germany is testing an artillery- observation vehicle with 168 units expected to be procured. The Netherlands will also field anti-tank and air defence versions. The former will be fitted with the Gill medium-range antitank missile.

Do some videos on unmaned ground vehicle
there are some errors here: The Bundeswehr does not use the MG42 or MG34, but the MG3 (similar to MG42) and the MG4 and MG5 (completely new designed MG that replace the MG3)
Just like M1117 feels like BRDM-2 with extra steps.

You mentioned the Luchs already. Now I expect a video. :D
The Strider from Arma 3 was modelled from this vehicle.
i have driven and work t on it.
the most amazing thing about it is how little noise it makes.
a thing we did then ever we had a group of guests on our base is have them stand on a road en listen to some one explain stuff about the fennek.
then some one drove one to about 1meter behind the group and honk its horn.
no one ever turns around because they hear it.
it is golden to see 35 school kids jump end then wonder where it kame from.
Germans.... Fast moving armor... "Desert Fox"....
*muffled Erika in the distance*

*Rommel intensifies*
Heheheh
UA-cam does not like that song
But, this is a dutch armored car-
I am surprised of how capable this little thing is as a scout. I've always seen it in arma 3 and only thought of it as a cool-looking car and not much more. Knowing now how well it does as a recce gives it a lot more respect from me.
They used it as a patrol APC/humvee thing in Afghanistan. Public opinion was shocked because no DIngo, no Marders, no Fuchses! Why Polish Army can use best APC in the entire world (at that time) and German soldier is hurt with using a recon armored car.
Well it's not that small, it's about 2.50 meters wide and over 5.50 meters in length.
@@HanSolo__ yea it was all about propaganda telling the german people lies that we build girl schools... Why would you need APCs for drilling wells? It is what permanently burned me from both major parties, and I am usually the "in the middle" boring guy...
@@HanSolo__ German Armynever used the Fennek as a transport vehicle But as a reconnaissance vehicle

I always admired Germans' ingenuity both in design and firepower in terms of their armored vehicles. Loved 'em. Another video from Mat', coolio! Cheers everyone :)
I admire the Dutch radio layed over the video...get's you right in to vacation mood.
I've only seen them drive past me when I was in camp, always loved them, they look so fast and sleek, but are actually not small or light.
Greetings from a former German DSO soldier
Feyza? I have been there and a Fennek drove behind me in camp and I just noticed when he was 1 meter away from me.
@@thorodinson5034 No, was during NRF 10 way back in 2007 or '08.
Germans with Fennek: Never ever be seen.
The Dutch apparentlly: FULL DAKKA
They just put a 50 cal M2 on top. Hardly all that imposing.
So that's where we Surinamese get it it from
Always wondered why we always went full frontal assault, now I know
We get it from the motherland
@@quantum340 i think he meant that they build anti tank and anti air versions.
Well something has to fill in the role of tank if you sell them all
@@jasperb9233 And then leased back. Under shared command. With only the other party having full veto rights over deployment.
Thank you for sharing your observations about this great little vehicle! For the Netherlands, it's main disadvantage has nothing to do with the vehicle as such, but in the sad fact that the Royal Netherlands Army had to abandon most of its Leopard 2 tanks in order to concentrate on armored reconnaissance with the Fenneks.
Don’t worry, even when Germany had leopard 2s used for recon, there was always another armored tank for the non-forced „real“ reconnaissance (the Luchs). Fennek is replacing the Luchs, not a Leopard. That’s a different type of recon.
@@Grimshak81 For the Netherlands army, the situation is more dramatic than that. First, the divisional structure was abolished, and the remaining brigades reduced in number. Then the remaining Leopard 2 battalions where abolished completely, with the last ones sold to Canada after factory overhaul. Only one Leopard 2 company was re-established and integrated in a German armored battalion attached to the last armored infantry brigade lacking a tank battalion otherwise. So it is not just replacing a few Leopard 2's in reconnaissance units, but replacing all tank units with Fennek-based reconnaissance units. Also, armored artillery was reduced on brigade-level from a battalion to a battery. The current brigades do not even are on NATO-standard any more, more akin to WW2 regimental structures.
We see them quite a lot overhere on Moving around on exercises, they are very quiet vehicles. Great job Alain Matsimus, greetz from the top of Holland!
Nice to see the Fennek on your channel^^ i am an old Fennek recon driver and the vehicle is superb on every terrain, the Afghans called it the Bat and like the dutch YPR 753 PRI they feared it because of its capabilities
Nice, since you actually drove it, how did the off road capabilities compare to other wheeled vehicles you saw?
@@jokuhunaify Off road capabilitties are superb, with the system to adept the air in the tires its just like driving on 4 big pillows, its an automatic system wich in the beginning is a getting a feeling for it but once you get that, you can play with engine performance to drive real quiet, some guy's we "stalked"for observation at the end said they would only hear an engine burping because of inexperienced drivers or bushes being crushed.
A, this beauty of a little recon vehicle; fell in love with it on the first look.
The Dutch army employs these also as stinger platforms and tankhunters. For the former the Fennek has an integrated 4-hardpoint launcher, while for the latter it simply carries a couple of man-portable missile launchers in the back. Bit disappointing that the spikes cannot be launched from the vehicle, but need to be deployed in a static position.
Out of curiosity, why can't the Spikes be launched from the vehicle ? You'd think it would work like the Wiesel TOW system.
BTW, they are upgrading the Wiesel to use MELLS ( German Spike Version), so it might be possible to do the same with the Fennek.
@@scratchy996 It is probably not a matter of 'cannot', but of 'will not'. The Dutch army has Fenneks with snazzy integrated stinger missile launchers on top, so no doubt the Spikes (called Gills in the Dutch Army) could be integrated into a convenient launcher. But they have chosen not to. Probably because that is cheaper; and most likely someone decided that having a crew member pop out of the vehicle to set up a man-portable launcher is sufficient when ambushing tanks.
@@quantum340 That's why I'm wondering, because I know about the Stingers and the .50cal machine guns, the Dutch really went to town with arming the Fennek.
@@scratchy996 Well, to be honest the .50 is formidable, but could also be found on unarmored open-topped Mercedes-Benz terrain vehicles (i.e. jeeps), so the Fennek having a single .50 hardly is impressive for an armored car. For comparison, the Germans equipped them with 40mm automatic grenade launchers. So to say the Dutch went to town arming the thing is a bit of an overstatement. But regarding the lack of Spike launchers, I have no doubt it was a cost issue. The Dutch Army has been living on a very tight budget for decades now. The introduction of the Fennek happened together with the abolishment of the tank units (all those Leopard2A5/6s sold off, still breaks my heart...). In fact, the whole Dutch armed forces doesn't even have enough Spikes to stop a single tank brigade.
Hup Holland
Cool and unexpected choice of vehicle review. You managed to keep me up awhile longer. Greetings from Wisconsin!
"it packs mg42/34 as well"
Lol, it can use the mg3.
To be fair, when you mention the Desert Fox , mg42/34 do come to mind.
Its the same gun more or less with a plastic stock
@@davesobani9565 The original MG42 also had a bakelite stock version.
@@davesobani9565 And it's chambered in 7.62 NATO
Pretty sure that is a joke - while MG-42 derivate in 7.62mm is still used as MG-3, MG-34 has not been used in ages. Also he said Fennek can resist 7.92mm fire - that round is no longer used by any military.
Arma 3 Striiiiiideeeer, good vehicle in game lol
You won't believe how quiet it is. When hiking at a military practise terrain, one of these snuck up on me. It just turned around a tree 10 meters in front of me, and I didnt even hear it approach. Only when it passed me by at a meter distance did i hear its engine buzzing. Most of the sound was actually the wheels plowing through the sand and gravel.
I've been waiting for you to pull this vehicle to the light for sooo long... Thank you, Matt.
Quite a impressive scout vehicle 👍 💥🔥💥🔥
I remember that vehicle from Crysis Warhead , with RWS Minigun and Auto Grenade Launcher
7:20 I know it's is classed to be safe up to 8.0 mm but I've spoken to several Dutch scouts who said it got penned by 7.62 ammo, maybe not a stock Ak47 round but definitely by the Ap rounds and the higher velocity rounds from sniper rifles..
I doubt it’s rated for AP 7.62x54R.
Its probably a big ass fake as Germany is known for making something that isnt that great and instead of working out what's wrong with it to make it's good they make way too much propaganda and lie about its performance
@@sparrow9990 😂 You mixed us up with the English.
Just plain old 7.62x54R LPS rounds with a mild steel core would probably penetrate it. Rounds loaded with 7N13 AP projectiles would likely go through like butter.

I've been waiting for a video on the fennek for a long time, great one matt! Hope to be able to serve with this beast in the future
Made a shitload of parts for these back in 2002 when the big orders were produced. Fun thing to drive.
Rommel would've DEFINITELY loved this thing
The Fennek. The most interaction in video games I've had with this vehicle is in Arma. It's a neat little thing and does quite well for itself. Very protective of my Fennek. My Squadron mates keep getting us into antics and my Fennek does its part in getting us out of things. Or just me and I've had enough of things. It's also quite fast in the game.
And we'll armoured too.
Great video matt, glad to see you finally get some free time
Fantastically capable little recon vehicle and German/Dutch collaboration in excellence. I'd love to see a version with dual/hybrid diesel/electric engine/engines/batteries to have silent and cold sneak/crawl capabilities and further enhanced sensors and stealth capabilities. A Fennec II if you will. Also, could it be feasible to make it amphibious? Or an amphibious version for engineer scouting?
A hybrid would mean more weight, fully electric less range - I think noise reduction is good as it is. For Heat it uses MCS/barrakuda Camouflage system. Yes it somewhat lacks the amphibious capability. that hasn't been seen as necessary since the 90s. In the 80s there were Prototypes for that purpose (APE/Tpz Fuchs derivative)
These are VERY quiet. There's no benefit to making them quieter, you'll trip over it by that stage.
Capable of what? It doesn't even have armor protection against heavy machine guns. Death. Trap.
@@deeremeyer1749 scouting
@@deeremeyer1749 so anything a machine gun can Penetrate is useless? Nice
I always thought that the Fennek could easily fit into the UNSC’s ground arsenal. It certainly has the boxy lines for it.
Standard NATO Battlegroups utilises foot reconnaissance and vehicle recon. The foot recon is conducted normally the day/night before the advance and identifies minefields and enemy positions at vital points, while the mechanized will conduct its recon just before the conventional forces advance, usually just a few hours before. The biggest difference being that the mechanized recon will actually try to engage the enemy in order to gauge their capacity (in some cases the mission would be to eliminate the threat completely). Mechanized recon also gives a battlegroup a rapid flanking ability. Recon Vehicles with adequate armament (like the French AMX 10RC or the Bradley) can be used in a tank hunting role
Definitely better than a HMMWV for recon.
Absolutely. Any day of the week.
well, the HMMWV is no dedicated recon vehicle
Hey Matt.. it's an incredible vehicle, so much so that It made me excited to watch Ur full video, At last u said that As it's production is seized and It's now not at par with other scout vehicles that are New to the market..i was very sad..
But Few Days ago...The German Rheinmetall Launched a teaser about The new fennek...Iam so Happy to see it.🤗😄
Recce in vehicles is always something I find interesting. I understand in the context of other vehicles, a light vehicle like this maybe has no foot print but to an infantry recce unit I just think how can anyone miss it! Ofc they do but still makes me appreciate the skills needed to implement mounted recce
As a German soldier I got so confused seeing fenneks and leos in woodlandcamo and then hearing Dutch instead of German.
They are similar too so I just thought I was stupid
Looks like a HMMWV and a Lamborghini had a baby.
Look up the Lamborghini LM002 then, crazy creation for sure
Looks like something the Marines would be driving in "Alien"!!!👍👍👍
This is the recce vehicle I wish the Canadian Army had gotten instead of the TAPV. It's far stealthier. It would also have been ideal for reserve armoured recce units, which tend to run with three man crews and need to sustain themselves for at least 72 hours.
Indeed, if the Fennek had been around when I was serving in an armoured recce unit about 40 years ago, I would have thought I had died and gone to heaven.
I wish we had these in Wargame: Red Dragon.

everyone noticed
No its not called after rommel
@@sombobytoldme5314 What is Erwin Rommel's nick name? What is a Fennek Fox? More specifically, where do they live?
Nope. The naming for the smaller vehicles is tough because there aren’t that many big animal cats to name it. That is why they shifted to smaller animals like Fennek or Ozelot.
I guarantee you no one knew the name and connected it to Rommel (who wasn’t always a tactical genius by the way) before the vehicle got introduced.

For the future versions, the company should offer a de-militarized version for civilian sale and aggressively promote it within off road rally/adventure circles and let them go to town modifying and upgrading it, then take the best ideas and roll them back into the base product. Given the way society seems to be heading, I think that they'd sell more than a few of these...though we plebes would never see them.
Mmmmm.... Yes ! I want !! but will probably be in the grave by the time they get removed from service and possibly avail to the public ! ;)
Bear in mind that the Luchs had two roles, recce and counter-recce, which is why it had that 20mm cannon, able to take out BRDMs. Which the Fennek simply cannot, neither the M2HB nor the HK GMG have that kind of punch.
Yes would be interesting how the decision process went. What capability did replace counter-recce in the minds of the planers?

My Grandfather spend his last years as a Bundeswehr Officer in Köln developing and overseeing this vehicle. His whole live as a soldier he was a armored recon and he drove a lot of different scout cars and tanks. When he made the list of what to put in this beautiful vehicle, he made sure that the crew had a very good working place, because most vehicles he had to drive were terrible and loud.

I remember these in arms 3. Damn good vehicle =)
German industry is unparalleled in the world, it is mysterious and terrifying The strong is strong.
The Fennek is the Lamborgini of the battlefield
There is *no* excuse for an armored vehicle designed specifically for recce to not have a sensor mast, unless you literally have no room because of a volume constraint.
The advantage of having your primary reconnaissance sensor unit be able to deploy from a generously "turret down" position cannot be overstated. Especially when that sensor pod is analogous to a scout using binos with his elbows propped up on the ridge. And I'd rather get my sensor pod shot off than take a round through the hull or turret.
It has a mast.

Pretty damn cool indeed.
They should have put a 25mm chain-gun and/or AT missile sys. on this thing. I really like the low profile and speed though.
They're reconnaissance vehicles, not cavalry. Totally different mission profile - only the USA use HUGE recon tracks armed to the teeth
@@jnievele As well as France (and several other countries), who put 90 and 105 mm guns on theirs. Now the French are using an autocannon for their new EBRC Jaguar recce vehicle, I presume it's because the French are mostly being active in West Africa dealing with insurgents there.
@@casuallatecomer7597 True. They're using them as convoy escorts and patrol vehicles a lot - the light armour isn't that much of an issue, and the speed helps a lot. Germany ended up using the Luchs like this as well, which had a 20mm autocannon - but that's not so much because it was supposed to fight its way out of trouble, but rather because that was what passed for a heavy machine gun in the Bundeswehr, the few M2 that originally were purchased in the 1950s weren't kept in service. But AFAIK the USA ae the only ones putting ATGMs on a dedicated recon vehicle, because to them recon and cavalry are the same, and cavalry has a direct fighting role as well.
There's a Dutch Anti-Tank and Air-Defense, even a mortar carrier Version. However only the Stinger platform fires directly of the vehicle has a low profile launcher. AT and mortar crew disembarks with the weapon.

In the age of the drone - I can see a vehicle like Fennek Gen 3.0 could be amazing launching its own drones relaying data / comms and 3rd party targetting.
Also, 4x Brimstone missiles on the back could make it bristly.
Hi Mat, this Scout vehicle, does it have a Stealth Button and can it be taught to use the sniffer nose like a trained human scout?

The luchs was great too though. It was incredibly quiet and was amphibious in its normal form. Could drive in both directions with two drivers

Canada should replace the G wagon for Reserves Armour Recce Units. These would be cheap and easy for them to maintain and would give the Army a new capability. They are not as mine proof as the current Recce vehicles but would be make an excellent training vehicle.
I honestly wonder what comes next. I haven't seen anything. Outfitting the existing vehicles with drones seems difficult. I hope it won't be yet ANOTHER Boxer with a recon module, I'd much rather see a genuine recon vehicle. My love for Boxer variants ended when my car dealership offered me a Boxer with a toddler seating module.
There might be recon variants of other vehicles in development. There is an early stage procurement plan for a Fuchs replacement, and another project for a new airborne vehicle to replace the Wiesel. These might include recon variants. The light infantry (Jäger) are in the process of introducing the Australian Boxer CRV as a fire support vehicle, so ... yeah.
Low profile? Like a Humvee? How is it against mines?

@@TheArklyte Thank you for your very friendly comment. The BRDM is only in that way an ancestor as ist was the threat that loomed over light Western European light reconaissance forces. In the 80s.
