GRIII owner also, had mine a month and shot maybe 1000 shots, so not as much as you but mine also isn't new. Can't see any dust on it, and I am very adept at scanning for dust spots. Shot some stuff at f/11 recently against pure blue skies, no dust. I don't treat the camera like any other, it just goes in a pocket.
Hint: if you want to review photos on the camera without extending the lens, don't press the power button. Instead press and hold the playback button. When you're done, short press the playback button to switch it off.
My final advice re dust is just to get out and shoot. The lens is sharp enough that unless you need dof or slower shutter you never really need to go smaller than f/4 either, where most dust will be invisible anyway.

I think the biggest difference between the GR III and other cameras is that it's a point and shoot being sold at the price of a decent system camera. While all cameras will get dust on their sensors eventually, at least with a system camera you can detach the lens to clean the sensor yourself. So really it's the high price tag coupled with the fact that you can't fix problem yourself that gets on people's nerves.
I just bought a lens cap for mine, so I'm hoping that will help mitigate the issue as much as possible.

You say that, but the Leica Q which is 5x more expensive than this camera also gets dust on it's sensor, and you can't remove the lens from that either.

As a joke I recently bought a GRX and sold my X100F to mpb. What a surprise I had when they told me that they were returning the X100F to me… because there was dust on the sensor! Of course I hadn't even noticed!
Conclusion the Ricoh is not the only one and you can have dust and not even realize it.

Wonder why MPB just didn’t blow the dust off the sensor.

Dust is an issue, but apparently, dust spots are hardly visible at bigger aperture’s up to 5.6 !!
In 4 years I have had mine serviced twice (around CHF 100).
And you can also easily remove the spots in Lightroom.
So for me it is more of psychological problem…

Just purchased the GRiii. Just bought a skylight filter to put over the lens. Put black tape on the speaker and microphone. The result, I hope, is minimizing the chance of dust. Dust in the GR is like paranoia. It doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.
Hoping I learn to love the camera. What a stretch. Tried the Leica Q3 this weekend at a camera store sponsored photo walk. I didn’t love that camera on a short 1st date.

i'd wager most don't ever notice because they're not shooting stopped down enough to really resolve the dust and they're not shooting the types of scenes where the dust would really jump at you if you weren't already looking for it. i think the dust issue is analogous to finding a hot pixel for the first time. you always know it is there and yet you also know there's nothing you can really do about it beyond fixing it in post every time or hoping that the internal cleaning function can fix it, but more often than not you're stuck and that really gets to some people.

I have a solution to the dust problem. if you have dust on your sensor, it appears when you photograph a white wall at F16. So don't photograph a white wall at F16. You're welcome.

    Hey Mr. Taylor,
thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences on photography general. Really appreciate your videos.
I bought a GR3 second hand in 2019 and needed to send it in because of a dust issue and a second timer because the electronic hadn't been working as it should anymore. Needles to say that I took care but was definitely not overprotective.
Anyway, I would buy that camera again or rather repair it again! There is just nothing like it...
    Cheers, M.

Any electronic camera with a sensor will get dust at some time or other.
It depends where and when you use it, and where and how you store it.
My GRIIIX lives in a waterproof case when not in use… my X100V got something on the sensor the first few days of ownership and had to be sent back to Fujifilm to get sorted, and that’s a fixed lens camera… it’s the joys of owning digital cameras!

No dust after nearly two years and like you, I am not careful. I just carry it around in my pocket or in the door pocket of my car, etc. I can add that I also have a Nikon Z6. Dust on the sensor is such a frequent occurrence on this camera, which compared to the GR III, I absolutely baby it.

Mine got a massive lump of dust right in the middle of the sensor .. I looked after my camera , kept it clean ect .. not one camera shop where I live in the U.K would touch it to clean the sensor .. I miss my Ricoh, I had Ricoh Gr from the film. Camera days .. I miss snap focus and the sharp lens .. I've switched to Fuji x100f .. no problems after 4 years .. I'm £800 out of pocket .. if Ricoh make a weather sealed version I'll get another ( maybe ).. the lump of dust looks as big as a soccer ball.. I hope you never have this issue .. 👍

I bought this camera new and I return it 3 days later, as the sensor got a lot of dust. Keep in mind that I was aware of that issue so, I was extra careful. I believe that this is pure luck! Overall it was a so and so camera. I ended up buying a Lumix GX9 with the "leica" 15mm f/1.7 for the same money and with a lot more features as my EDC camera and I'm really really happy!

7500 shots into my second one and I have dust on mine. the built in ND filter lets me keep it below f8 most of the time if I want to be straight out of camera. I have the ND filter programmed to the movie button. If I am shooting raw and plan to edit IDGAF about it as it a 2 second edit to remove it if I am at something like f11.

This is one big reason from holding me back in buying one. As fun as the idea is having a solid camera on you that isn’t a smartphone that has high image quality and pocketable, the dust is a no go for me. It’s not a pocketable camera but for me having the Fuji XPRO 2 and a 23 f2 lens attached really doesn’t feel too bad and I can always blow out any dust and in the lens and on the sensor.

    • @martingreenberg870
      @martingreenberg870 Рік тому

I am also a Fuji fan. To be fair, the XPRO2 and 23 isn’t anywhere as pocketable like the GR. There are other reasons to use the XPRO and the 23 chron. It can be put in a jacket pocket. If it works for you great. At last the XPRO has an EVF. The GR is also cheaper than your rig. In my unsolicited opinion, a very good choice.

This camera could be slightly thicker, no telescopic lens, weather sealing, slightly more grip to accommodate more battery.

I recently tried to sell my GRIIIx to a well known organisation because after just 3 months and less than 600 actuations, I simply didn’t enjoy it despite the amazing image quality. They refused to buy it and returned it because of a single dust spot on the sensor. I hadn’t noticed it, but looking back through my images, I could clearly see it now that it has been pointed out, and it appears to have been there possibly from new.
The fact is, I have a camera costing nearly £1,000 and less than four months old, but I can’t sell it! That simply isn’t good enough, and I think anyone considering purchasing a GRIIIX should avoid it. I would point out that from day one I kept it in the Ricoh leather case, never put it in a pocket, or exposed it to any obviously dusty situations.

Great camera, crazy sharp lens, but the dust issue sucks. I have a GR2, it's an awesome camera but it has dust. Will not waste my money on GR until they fix that issue. If they fix it, I'll buy it cause the lens is awesome.

If the reason is the lens retracting and so on, the Sony Rx100 should have the same problem, even more, because the lens retracts way more and I haven´t had any problem with it.

Taylor: It is true that no camera can be totally immune to dust. The problem is that in the GR you have to send it to be cleaned since you don't have access to the sensor without completely disassembling the camera. And that has a cost and also a risk. For me it is unacceptable for a camera in that price range. And I have no complex if in my pocket to have something bigger than a GR.🍆🤪

Pictures count does not matter. You can take them in month or in years. So only time matter.

    • @zoeherriot
      @zoeherriot 10 днів тому

Picture count actually does matter (although less directly) because it has an implication on how many times the lens is extended and retracts. If you take five photos in a month, or 1000 photos in a month, it's a safe bet that lens has been extended / retracted more often in that second scenario. Time is not the issue here.
