The Nintendo 64 was my first console. I bought it with my hard-earned money. Taking off the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, it wasn't a perfect system. However, while the PS1 had an amazing library of almost every conceivable genre, what I believe the N64 excelled in was its colorful adventure platformers with great characters, as well as its great party games and multiplayer.
I was not really a big N64 player while it was current. I had both the Playstation and Saturn when the N64 launched, feeling I had myself pretty covered. I did get an N64 roughly 6 months after its launch for Mario 64. The game was such a milestone in gaming that I had to experience it myself. Then Nintendo did something that I thought they would never do... Not only were they kings of the platformer, but they became the industry leader for FPS's on console. I went from occasionally playing my N64 to going through multiple controllers because the stick would give out. I went bananas for Bond, Doom 64, Quake, Quake 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Turok 1-3, Hexen, Forsaken, and the N64's swan song Perfect Dark. That is still my favorite N64 game of all time.
This is my favorite console of all time. Before it, I owned the SNES and Sega Genesis, in that order. I credit this console with turning me into a gamer because, to me, it blew the two major 16 bit consoles out of the water. With childhood favorites like Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, Star Fox 64, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye and Rogue Squadron, you couldn't beat these games with quality at the time. The games may look rough nowadays, but one can't overlook the way this console paved for future 3d games. Thanks for covering this guys. This N64 fanboy appreciates it and all the content you guys put out.
We like people like you. For example, Shenmue is one of my favorite games of all time but I don't get bent out of shape when people don't like it. Keep enjoying Majora's Mask, my man!
The best snowboarding game I ever tried (up to this day) is on N64. It's called 1080. I've played that game like a mad man possesed. lol It's still my favourite snowboarding game.
First console I ever opened at launch, loved it for everything it was, especially since my prior one was the NES. This whole episode was a throwback to my childhood. Thanks guys. So much time playing golden eye with my brother, if only we could be kids forever.
Even if you're not a wrestling fan, the wrestling games still needed a mention. No Mercy is still regarded as one of the best wrestling games ever and it's over 15 years old now.

This video isn't so bad. We already know everything there is to know about the big hitters like Rare games, Mario 64, Zelda, Smash Bros, etc. So it's cool to see the more obscure games
I can still remember the first time playing Mario 64 and how amazed I was with the 3D graphics and gameplay, and playing morrowind on the original xbox was overwhelming the first time with all the things to see and do in the open world but it was the first game I put more than 100 hours into and loved every minute of it.
This system was the party system of it's time. I can not remember any other time so many people would be having game nights of Mariokart and Goldeneye. Great system.
Love the review but I think some legendary games like 007 and Smash Bros. deserve a bit more time spent talking about them. Smash Bros. replay value is insane and I've worn out possible 50 joy sticks playing that game.
Richard Silvas there’s no reason to go back and play the first Smash bros since we have Ultimate. There’s over 80 fighters and over 100 stages. Why would you limit yourself by playing something so outdated?
How could you not love the Banjo Music? I believe you guys are the first people to say it was bad, i mean music is subjective, but wow, that was a surprising comment.
They should def make a remake or HD version of Donkey Kong 64. I thought the worlds in the game were cool, especially the mushroom world that's in the sky.
It's funny how some people get so offended by something that they forget to look at the episode as a whole but instead judge it based on the one on thing that they disagreed with. The whole "episode fail" comment from the latest system episode really got me laughing. You guys put out quality content on a consistent basis, and I am currently going back and rewatching all the system-focused episodes!
So many memories with this gem. I remember my dad buying me a third-party rumble-pack which also had the memory inside too. Was pretty nifty to say the least

I commend you guys for being able to play this much N64 without going blind from the low frame rates, muddy textures, and dull and blurry graphics. The Nes, Snes, and GameCube all aged so much better.
I really wish these guys had made some mention of the wrestling games that graced the system. Whether you enjoyed the WWF or WCW titles, they were all a ton of fun to play with friends. Despite its shortcomings, the Nintendo 64 is one of the best collectable consoles around thanks to the games being cartridge-based. If you can overlook its faulty controller and fuzzy graphics there is a library of titles that really make this system a must-own.
Majora's Mask is the best Zelda ever made. The best part about it is the cast of characters, side quests and the 3 day mechanic which allows you to do everything over again and again adding to the replay value.
Funny that Gust used time mechanics in theyr Atelier games on PS3 as well (Atelier Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Ayesha and Esha&Lodgy), excelent games by the way (with exception of Atelier Totori), and in my opinion miles more interesting and beautiful than Majora's Mask. Seriously, if Majora's Mask was the best Zelda ever, I would have serious concern about future of the series. But I like Skyward Sword the best, so I am clearly wrong on that.
The benefit of it being on a 3-day system was that it was able to give citizens actual schedules since they only had to worry about giving them 3 days worth of stuff to do. It really made the game feel alive for its time, you just didn't see things like that and you still largely don't even today. Sure, there are much bigger games today but how many of them have citizens with deliberate tasks in their daily lives that it feels like they're actual people instead of just NPC's?
F-Zero X, best racing game on the system, with a random track generator. Just picked this up again, and I was blown away because of spot on controls and smooth gameplay. Also Jet Force Gemini is ACE!
I really enjoyed the review but felt like all the in depth reviews focused too much on the racing games whereas some of the bigger titles for the system such as Conker's Bad Fur Day, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Star Fox 64, Smash Bros, Paper Mario etc etc should've had more time taken into account talking about them . Especially for varieties sake. Still another top notch review regardless guys :D
Why does everyone say that "Goldeneye 007" is a great game on the Nintendo 64? I actually played the game a couple of times, and I just didn't find it to be as good as everyone claimed it to be, and I also got kinda bored each time I played it as well. :P
I really like all the (what looks like) stop motion animations you guys have on your videos. Your console videos you guys do really shows how good you all are at it while portraying the insides of the console and providing what I think is the best explanation of console specs on the internet in terms of gaming videos. And even if I don't agree with your opinions on the games, you guys are always fair about it. Just subscribed and can't wait for new videos (especially the next console one)!
I'm a bit conflicted about the N64. It was one of my favorite consoles as a child because it gave me some of my fondest gaming memories (OOT remains the greatest game ever made). On the other hand, after revisiting the console as an adult, I've discovered that its library really is startlingly sparse with probably the least strength in depth of any major Nintendo system. Overall, I'd say it's definitely my least favorite of the major 5th generation console (PS1 and Saturn both have bigger and better libraries), but would still probably make it into my top 10 favorite consoles ever. It has relatively few good games, but those it does have are extremely good indeed. You simply can't argue with the quality and influence of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Mario 64 and the like.

Waverace 64 is just such a perfect racing game. I still play it. Nothing in the genre ever came close, including Hydro Thunder, which was a close second (but not on the N64, that version sucked).
They picked a great list of games that really highlights the N64's strengths. It did racing games really well, and while they picked some games they didn't like they made sure to clarify that was their opinion. On the Zelda titles it may just depend on which console you started on, my first Nintendo home console was the N64, and I refer the N64 Zelda titles to Link to the Past. That being said I have yet to play a Zelda game I didn't really enjoy and I've played just about all of them except for a few handheld titles.
The Nintendo 64 was my third console. I bought it with my hard-earned money. Taking of the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, it was a perfect system. However while the PS1 had a library of games, what I believe the N64 excelled in was its colourful adventure platformers with great characters, as well as its great part games and multiplayer. And Wave Race.
Personally, Kirby 64 is one of my favorite Kirby titles. True, it is a bit slow at times but it's worth it. I enjoyed the boss fights. Yes, they're easy but it's Kirby, it's supposed to be easy. Anyway, good video and I look forward to watching the others.
TheLastRaven6 That's true. Remember the piece you get by using the Cutting/Rock combo? I didn't have the internet back then so I had to call Nintendo's Hotline for information.
If they prefer link to the past, that's fine. But they could at least mention that ocarina was groundbreaking and revolutionary like Mario 64. And ocarina boring? Hard to believe haha...
The "NOTE" really doesn't need to be there in my opinion. I loved this episode because of how much of an n64 fan I am and I know all of this was your opinion. This was the first game sack episode I watched and it had a good impression on me. This channel is great and I can't wait to see more from you guys.
I was the only one of my friends in high school who had N64, Everybody was on ps1 or 2 but all my friends did go out and buy N64 controllers and always wanted me to bring my system to the party.
best system ever! sad i sold my collection for rent years ago. plan on getting another one ,fully mod it ,and getting an everdrive 64. also importing a hori mini pad. i probably watch this episode more than any other. my first system ever. i miss cartriage based systems. i use my ps3 for dvds more then games hahaha.
6:10, also there was a thing that I still have for my Nintendo 64 called a Tremor Pak+, this was a rumble pak that came with a memory card, the card wasn't built into the device, and could be swapped by your already used cards so you could continue playing your saved games. The thing is pretty great, and I always have it attached to my controller, but it definitely weighed a ton.
What? I've played everything was kind of video game, PlayStation 1,2,3 to the 4, Xbox 360, 380, the line of SEGA, Super Nintendo, everything ... and I never saw and enjoyed a vídeo game as perfect as the Nintendo 64, for me the best video game ever developed of all time ... his matches were marked by generations ... Nintendo 64 is forever ...
You guys really need to take the disclaimer out of the Description, or at the very least change it to: *This is our opinion of the system. If you don't like it get the stick out of your butt, its just an opinion*
I liked this episode on the basis that it shows a lot of games that I don´t know. I don´t mind if game sack may not have the same opinions and memories that I had. I just try to enjoy all of these older consoles and discovering old games. The only sad part is some of these older games can get very expensive, the retro video game hobby is becoming more and more popular.
I'd have to disagree with some of your choice in words when describing certain aspects of the game. Goldeneye had a very fun single player, and hours of gameplay to achieve 007 rank, I wouldn't call it decent. Same goes for Perfect Dark, it was widely popular despite 007, which says a lot for the game's success.
really dunno why ppl complain about the N64 controller, cos once you get used to it - then it handles just like any of the other more standard designed controllers
ahh no Ogre Battle 64?? I never owned a 64 so I can't really comment on many of the games for the system. But I remember playing Ogre Battle 64 and I always thought it was such a great game.
So pretty much I'm seeing comments on how people are upset that someone with their own opinions didn't like something that they did. I agree with Dave/Joe. Neither OoT or MM really hooked me like they did with everyone else. They're not bad at all, but they just don't do it for me. That being said, I loved Wind Waker. And aside from the awful control bugs, I also enjoyed Skyward Sword. But hey, that's just my opinion. Not gospel.
Marko Radokicik it´s not about an opinion, its about simply downplaying them as if they didnt mean anything. Opinion would mean they say they didnt like it but calling it a Mario64 clone...
Some of the statements in the video are flat out wrong...obviously you guys briefly skimmed the first 10 minutes of some of these games and called it a day.
just started watching your vids, and have to say you lost all credibility when you said wave race 64 was you're fav game for the syste. when the system had goldeneye which you barely touched on, ocarina of time, starfox, super smash bros, mario 64, perfect dark was successful and due to it's likeness to goldeneye
It's astonishing how developers managed to make such great game like Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Banjoo Kazooie, Golden Eye when the concept of 3D gaming was new and no one had much experience with it.
I don't think you know what you're asking for. Trilinear filtering (which causes the blurryness) reduces aliasing when textures are minified (yes, it really is called that). You seem to want nearest filtering (sharp, lots of aliasing/texture shimmer). Anti-aliasing is a technique to reduce the stair-stepping effect on edges, that's also probably not what you're talking about. If you want to see the game look like Quake in software mode, basically, then you're shit out of luck even on emulators. In order to accomplish the expensive trilinear filtering, they had to sacrifice texture resolution to fit into on-chip caches; otherwise you're doing 8 texture reads from RAM and it would take 8 times more time to render. If you're reading 8 times from cache it's almost free, but the cache is only 64x32 pixels (trilinear) or 64x64 pixels (bilinear). That's also why the only art style that looks OK on N64 is cartoony, almost flat shaded graphics that hides the attrocious texture resolution.
Not a bad selection but I would have add Ogre Battle 64, Doom 64, Goemon/Mystical Ninja games, Rayman 2, Wipeout 64, Star Wars Racer, Resident Evil 2, World Driver Championship, ISS 98, Rocket Robot on wheel and 007 World is not enough. Also Top Gear Rally is a great racing game but it needs time to warm up (almost as good as Sega Rally on Saturn IMO).
I can't believe u guys didn't talk about a single n64 wrestling game. Those games were sum of the best multiplayer games on the system with easy to master gameplay that still included all the wrestlers individual moves and intros. The n64 wrestling games easily blew away anything that the playstation had to offer. You guys should dedicate an episode to those games. You really did the n64 a disservice by not mentioning them. I'm 100% positive that if u 2 sat down and played any of the wwf or wcw games u would love them.
I once tried too find my way around by following some different coloured boy's. I ended up finding my way too hospital after getting stabbed and robbed.
Whoa, you guys should not be reviewing racing games, San Fransisco rush bad? lack of game play? that's one of the most awesome racing series ever made, huge tracks, insane physics, multiple short cuts, hidden secrets, it was awesome, way better then any of your generic arcade/sim racers we've seen in the last 15yrs.
N64 had by far the best graphics of the early 3d consoles. The 3DO and Atari Jaguar looked like fucking shit. The 32 bit ps1 and saturn looked pretty decent but the graphics are still kind of cheesy. The N64 wasn't perfect but it looked like true 64 bit gaming, not that the competition was terrible graphics wise.
Giordan Diodato The problem of Ps1 were not the number of polygons, color or number of textures. But the lack of correction effects, like the AA, distortion prevention, smoothness overall. Too common for ps1 games, the terrible look of textures when near the camera, the trembling characters, saw lines, bad distortion of the polygons when the camera is changing angles, which made the ps1 games, even when colorful and detailed, feel less smooth or elegant than the n64.
The reason the N64 didn’t have good 3rd party support was because companies like Konami and Capcom focused on the PSX a lot more and only put a couple games on the n64.
lol...wow "Weakest Kirby game in the series"..."Music simple and not really enjoyable" and then a bunch of racing games...mk. I saw the discription...bet you pissed off a lot of N64 fans with this one. Just hearing Banjo-Kazooie's music again makes me want to play it...man I need a copy of that game.
Yeah people are pretty sensitive when it comes to differing opinions on their favorite games. Dave is a HUGE Kirby fan and for him to call it the weakest in the series says a lot. But no, he said something bad about a 1st party N64 game! Bring out the pitchforks! I'm not referring to you or your comment, by the way... just an example.
Game Sack I just find that funny...I'm a huge Kirby fan as well, grew up on it since my mom wouldn't buy me gory games or anything violent (I'm a chick so it had to be suitable for a little girl to play), so what better game then an adorable pink ball? Anyways...my favorite Kirby game to this day is Crystal Shards on the N64. It's fun and addictive, yes it's a bit slow but I like slow games..let's me enjoy and relax a bit. And that combining powers thing was pretty kick ass...I had some fav combos back in the day. But to each his or her own. There are so many games out there and every gamer is different, so if you say you dislike something, you'll piss on a few peoples parade. For instance, I hate every Final Fantasy game and most RPG's. Do you know how much hate I've gotten because of that? Enough to keep the fires of hell stoked till the end of time.
Yeah. That's HARSH! And that says ALOT coming from me! I'm like the ULTIMATE KIRBY FAN! I mean, come on! Have you SEEN my name? KirbyMaster5000. KIRBYMaster5000!!
LadyAllegra55 I find it hilarious that your mom bought you Kirby because of how "non-violent" it was, considering the final boss is an angelic bleeding eyeball monster made of hate. God do I love that trend in the Kirby series. Also, I wish there were more new platformer IPs these days. Even the most derivitive of them back then were leaps and bounds more creative than the current wave of "KILL ALL FOREIGNERS" modern millitary FPSes.
Thomas Johnson Well she never played the game or watched me play it...she just saw a cute pink ball that smiled and said that it was a good game for a little girl lol.
The Nintendo 64 was my first console. I bought it with my hard-earned money. Taking off the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, it wasn't a perfect system. You guys should have waited for the 64th episode to do this
This is so early that they probably didn't even consider a 64th episode happening for sure.
Some of the games in the end montage deserved more screen time. As already noted, you guys weren't really into this console

I love the way you guys take apart the system in stop motion. It looks so cool.
Joe looked about as excited to do this review as he would be to get a root canal.
How could you not love the Banjo Music? I believe you guys are the first people to say it was bad, i mean music is subjective, but wow, that was a surprising comment.

Just don’t read the comments and you’ll be okay!
I like these old videos where you guys chime in over each others reviews. Kinda miss it!
Waverace 64 is just such a perfect racing game. I still play it. Nothing in the genre ever came close, including Hydro Thunder, which was a close second (but not on the N64, that version sucked).
Surprised to see no mention of Body Harvest. That game did what a lot of games these days are trying to do.
I was playing GoldenEye while watching this.
You guys are doing a great job. I enjoy watching all of your reviews!
I totally agree with your comments on both Zelda N64 titles. I usually prefer the 2D Zelda's over the 3D ones.
Wow i hear that 007 and perfect dark were decents?????
it has no racing content, that's why they can't flip out for best shooters ever made
I can see how this WOULD leave a bad impression but I think it's a pretty solid episode
I love the phrase "extremely mediocre."
Hey, turn auto-aim off on Goldeneye! Don't make me slap the controller out of your hands.
N64 was certainly great for local coach co-op.
Personally, Kirby 64 is one of my favorite Kirby titles. True, it is a bit slow at times but it's worth it. I enjoyed the boss fights. Yes, they're easy but it's Kirby, it's supposed to be easy. Anyway, good video and I look forward to watching the others.
Not easy if you go for 100% crystal.
TheLastRaven6 That's true. Remember the piece you get by using the Cutting/Rock combo? I didn't have the internet back then so I had to call Nintendo's Hotline for information.
PKMN37 OMG! That one was hard for me to get, I finally figured it out by just trying all of the forms.
I relent the love we had for Dave and his angleic voice and how he has forsaken thee!
Lol Good video, but that was quite the dismissive review of OoT. "It's not as good as Link to the Past." Very strange red herring there.
If they prefer link to the past, that's fine. But they could at least mention that ocarina was groundbreaking and revolutionary like Mario 64. And ocarina boring? Hard to believe haha...
Also, perfect dark a decent game? My god, what's this all about haha
The "NOTE" really doesn't need to be there in my opinion. I loved this episode because of how much of an n64 fan I am and I know all of this was your opinion. This was the first game sack episode I watched and it had a good impression on me. This channel is great and I can't wait to see more from you guys.
No mention of some the awesome wrestling games on the N64??
The Banjo Kazooie games on this system are still my favorite platformers to this day...
Wheres WWF No Mercy???
Yeh Where Is No Mercy
TurboFurboFurbz The best wrestling games ever were on the N64
+FallicIdol Meh.. it isn't that great honestly
Isnt that great!?!?!?
+TurboFurboFurbz At the time that was a really good game.
BJ's music not enjoyable? Wuuuuuuuuut?
These guys are idiots sometimes.
6:10, also there was a thing that I still have for my Nintendo 64 called a Tremor Pak+, this was a rumble pak that came with a memory card, the card wasn't built into the device, and could be swapped by your already used cards so you could continue playing your saved games. The thing is pretty great, and I always have it attached to my controller, but it definitely weighed a ton.
n64 is the best system in my opinion
I bought mine in 97 and it still works fine. It's still my pride and joy!
Uh, those aren't games. More like the things you use to play games.
Love the stop-motion at the end. Keep up the great work guys!
You guys really need to take the disclaimer out of the Description, or at the very least change it to: *This is our opinion of the system. If you don't like it get the stick out of your butt, its just an opinion*
I guess they want to stay on the safe side but I completely agree with you
But is a video made by them on their own UA-cam channel played by themselves. Is obviously that is their opinion.
But I remember playing Ogre Battle 64 and I always thought it was such a great game.
yes it is. >.> I own it, my fiance got it for me for christmas a few years back...was very hard to find.
Ah this episode takes me back. One of my first episodes of GS and it's still one of the best channels on UA-cam 😎
Not gospel.
People can disagree with other peoples too, especially their reasoning for not liking the games.
I remember I had the choice between beatle adventure racing and cruisin the world, I got crusin and it was the best choice I ever made
>Insults B-Ks music
>Says Mischeif Makers is "Gimmicky"
>Notices they only played these games for 3 minutes.
maybe you could do a 'review every us release n64 game' episode since there wasn't that many of them compared to other consoles
Interesting how you downplay some of the best N64 games like Ocarina of time, Majoras Mask, Smash Bros and Banjo Kazooie
indeed, in my opinion rare frequently gave nintendo a run for their money and i think banjo kazooie actually surpassed super mario 64
there not as much downplaying them as much as they also wanna show that the system had other great games as well.
Sam Lannan they called Banjo Kazooie a "Mario64 clone"!!! That alone was nearly enough to have me unsubscribe their channel
Patric Opitz Yeah you tell em man. Screw you game sack. How dare you have an actual opinion. Ridicilous.
Marko Radokicik it´s not about an opinion, its about simply downplaying them as if they didnt mean anything. Opinion would mean they say they didnt like it but calling it a Mario64 clone...
Not a lot of challenge? Have you played a kirby game? They are for chilling and having fun. Not about challenge or speed.
What about Body Harvest? I feel like I'm the only one that knows about that game. Seriously kick-ass game!
I remember. It was sub par then, and it's just crap now.
Yes, you're right. I guess I never noticed..
Let’s play a drinking game: for every racing game they list, take a shot! You’ll be dead before the video is even over!
Some of the statements in the video are flat out wrong...obviously you guys briefly skimmed the first 10 minutes of some of these games and called it a day.
For me this is a new channel, you guys have an amazing thing here.
just started watching your vids, and have to say you lost all credibility when you said wave race 64 was you're fav game for the syste. when the system had goldeneye which you barely touched on, ocarina of time, starfox, super smash bros, mario 64, perfect dark was successful and due to it's likeness to goldeneye
Conker's Bad Fur Day is the most impressive N64 game. It's violent, looks great and has the best sound on N64.
It's astonishing how developers managed to make such great game like Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Banjoo Kazooie, Golden Eye when the concept of 3D gaming was new and no one had much experience with it.
Hence many of the camera issues when it comes to the platformers that you mentioned
solmndust88 Here's a fix: The "C" stick. Or with Zelda, the "Z" button. ta-da! Problem solved.
solmndust88 A lot of those problems were due to the lack of a second analog stick. Which didn't become a standard until the PS2.
You guy have been helping me get through a very serious health crisis this year... I am on disability and your videos lift my spirits... god bless!
I really loved the N64.... I just cant stand the heavy aliasing! I wish it could be turned off!
+phonedork I've seen your videos!!!
+phonedork Some games disable the anti-aliasing, but most games on the N64 are 3D and 3D looks nicer with the anti-aliasing
+MarioKart7z yea I know it's perfected now. But low resolution IMO looks better without aliasing
phonedork 100% agree!
Nah, this episode was perfect but as for the WCW or WWF games they wouldn't like it as those games are pretty mediocre as well.
MrDmoney156 No Mercy was far from being "mediocre"
They could do a "Wrestling Games" episode which would include the N64 ones.
Pete Mclovins Very true, how dare our opinions wander away from the societal norms! We need to conform immediately!
Game Sack ONE OF US, ONE OF US!!!
SF: Rush is the SHIT.
The NES was my first system, but it was the N64 that made me fall in love with video-games.
Billy Bob might wanna play Final Fantasy IX and Chrono Cross before you diss PS1 graphics.
***** maybe, but again. Look at FFIX.
Mario 64 and Zelda OOT are 2 of the best games ever made.
i totally disagree about donkey kong 64.
Majora's Mask is my favorite in the series. By far the darkest of all the games with the best villain of the series.
