- Robert St Clair Grant (14 April 1932 - 8 November 2003) was an English actor, comedian and writer, best known for playing bus conductor Jack Harper in the television sitcom On the Buses, as well as its film spin-offs and stage version. When On the Buses finished, Grant found himself heavily typecast as Jack Harper and struggled to get other parts. He toured Australia in the farce No Sex Please, We're British, and continued to appear in musicals and pantomimes. In 1975, he wrote and starred in a one-off pilot Milk-O alongside his On the Buses co-star Anna Karen, an attempt to reinvigorate his career by means of a similar character, a milkman who spent his time fighting off amorous housewives he was delivering to. However, this did not lead to a series, and Grant never acted for television again. In 1981 he appeared in a touring production of the once-controversial revue Oh! Calcutta!, accompanied by a chorus line of naked men and women less than half his age.In 1980, Grant played the title role in John Arden's BBC radio adaptation of Don Quixote, with Bernard Cribbins as Sancho Panza. In 1985 he played a cockney detective inspector in The Red Telephone Box, a comedy thriller by Ken Whitmore on BBC Radio 4. On stage he later played Autolycus in The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare for The Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
In the 1980s, he suffered from deep depression, bipolar disorder and other mental health problems, because of a lack of work and his vast debts. This eventually led to a suicide attempt: in 1987 he disappeared from his home in Leicestershire for five days; it later emerged that he had taken the ferry to Dublin intending to kill himself. "I was in a horrible state", Grant said during an interview after the event, "I just had to get out of the house. I left the house and thumbed a lift to Melton Mowbray, and then got a train to Birmingham New Street where I sat sobbing in a station buffet. Everyone ignored me. Normally I get asked in the street something like 'When you back on telly then?', but not this time.Grant started to write his first note to Kim, intending to have sent it to her after he had killed himself. "Tears streamed down my face as I wrote", he recalled. After hours of pounding the streets of Birmingham, Grant instead caught the ferry to Dublin, "It was a horrible night on that boat", he continued. "I'd been to Dublin before and it seemed such a nice place. I wanted to end it all, either by jumping in the River Liffey or ironically under a bus" Grant stayed at a guesthouse in Dublin to think things over. He called Kim, but there was no answer; she was at the time filming an appeal to find him. Grant eventually returned to England, because of the appeal, where his absence had caused a small stir, leading him to gain a few more acting jobs.In 1990, it was announced that On the Buses would be revived as a new show called 'Back on the Buses' , and the entire cast including Grant himself, Reg Varney, Stephen Lewis, Doris Hare, Michael Robbins and Anna Karen would appear on Wogan, Back on the Buses eventually fell through when funding from STV was not forthcoming. The project was to have been backed by STV's executive producer Bryan Izzard who had produced seven episodes of On the Buses and the final spin-off film Holiday on the Buses.Another long gap in employment led to another suicide attempt in 1995, this time by carbon monoxide poisoning in his car. Grant was discovered just in time, slumped over the steering wheel of his car, which was filled with exhaust fumes, and admitted to hospital for treatment. He and Kim took a holiday in Goa in India to recover and on their return, it seemed things were finally going right again. They moved to a small cottage in Church End Twyning, about a mile south of Twyning, near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire with the ambition of making a fresh start. Grant lived very reclusively and neighbours would only see him when he was trimming his hedge. His last acting role was in Funny Money at Devonshire Park Theatre from July 1998.His 'new life' did not last as once more substantial bills continued to arrive and work did not. In despair, Grant made a third and final suicide attempt in 2003. This time he succeeded, dying in his fume-filled car in his garage with a hose attached to the exhaust pipe, and was found dead soon after.
Bob Grant was a big part of my childhood growing up, my life has been ruled by my mental health. When Bob went missing and seeing he was ok, I was so happy to see one of my comedy heroes sharing what he could with us all and his emotions. When he died it was a big kick in the teeth, that talented genius to reach such a low in his life! RIP Bob Grant, from those who really cared and still do about you! ❤️
Love Bob Grant and his role in On the Buses. People say Sid James had that distinctive dirty laugh but so did Bob Grant. Unfortunatley he couldn't see a way out of his worries and concerns and ended his own life. God bless him X.
Sid James wasn't such a sensitive man like Bob Grant was😢 anyone who commit suicide is a very vulnerable person it got to Bob Grant when he couldn't find decent acting jobs and he got into debt .
@@vanessalouise8988 it's not easy 4 anybody to find work when a series ends or finishes, especially if you're not young anymore, as actor's won't to continue 2 work until the end, as retirement isn't fun anymore unless you're enjoying it.
i became a bus driver because of this man & loved it, thanks bob
So did my older brother. He retired from the buses a few years ago. Jack was like a character straight from a naughty seaside postcard brought to life by Bob's great acting. It's strange how the people who make us laugh most are often very troubled in real life. Another who was deeply troubled but made us laugh was the late Robin Williams. Great comedians the like of whom we shall never see again.
Bob Grant eh?, How can you not leave a comment, What a great man, so sadly missed. Brought us comedy at its very best.
Part of my childhood was On the Buses. My dad (a driver himself) used to sit there howling with laughter. A lovely tribute.
Thank you 👍👍👍
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT TRIBUTE TO
BOB GRANT A TRUE GENTLEMAN
LEGEND, GENIUS, ACTOR AND ENTERTAINER
REST IN PEACE WITH ALL ANGELS WHERE LAUGHTER NEVER STOPS
My favourite episode of On The Buses is the Boxing 🥊 Day Social in the fifth series when Olive get drunk and chuck a alcohol drink over Arthur when he won't take any notice of her Stan sister Linda attend the do and 😘 kiss Stan inside the bus it always make me laugh. 🤣
I remember his passing so tragic, couldn't believe he suffered from depression as he always had such a happy demeanour. He was a great character in On the Buses. Great pairing with Reg Varney always remembered RIP.
🙏🙏🙏
I loved his character. Always a pleasure to watch him. Towards the end of his suffered depression. A sad loss to television.
I loved his character in the buses. Would love to of seen him in other parts. He made me laugh. Thankyou Bob.
Bob Grant was a truly brilliant performer. His role as Jack in On the Buses was fantastic. RIP Bob.
Such a sad ending to a great man who seemed so happy and always smiling. He's programmes make us smile and gives us good memories. Bless you.
So sorry to read of this. RIP Bob. Thanks for the laughs.
I hadn’t realised Bob had died. I hadn’t known of his prior battles with depression. I would love it if it could be conveyed to his family my absolute appreciation of his humour, his acting skills and his contribution to my happy care free memories. I remember my mother commenting about her memories of Doris Hare as a classical actress on stage and in Rep during world 2. To me Bob was a highly skilled actor with ‘funny bones’ and perfected comic timing. I have fond fond memories of on the buses and Bob the rascal clippie was a wonderful contributor to those memories.
Such a cruel thing that a classically trained actor like Bob Grant was typecast into his role as Jack Harper. From what I'm told he was a very adaptable and talented actor who deserved much more opportunity in his career.
Bob Grant probably wouldn't wouldn't have been typecast today he went to public 🏫 school and talk posh unlike Jack Harper he was a sensitive man who suffer a mental breakdown when he didn't work for 8 months maybe he had the wrong agent at the time if celebrity get short of money 💰 they go on reality programme they weren't around in Bob Grant days.
George Reeves had the same problem type cast Jay North another
I loved Bob Grant and Reg Varney. What a team. On the Buses was a classic show from the 70s that I grew up watching as a young boy. It's still repeated to this very day and it still makes me laugh as much. God bless you Bob. 🙏
He was great character on the show, would not have been the same without him. He was a lovable rogue. Sad that his life ended as it did. Rest in peace.
Indeed thankyou Bob for all the Laughter you gave us and still giving us 🙏🏻
Depression is a terrible thing ! !
R.I.P Bob 😔
Love him. With his lecherous grin. Wicked. Never get tired of watching Bob in on the buses. Watched them so many times. Love it........⭐🇬🇧🙋♂️.
Thanks for the Bob Grant tribute. Big "On The Buses " fan here, and whenever I watch the series, films or his cameo appearances, always makes me smile and I find myself yearning for the golden era of comedy
My only wish was that Bob himself had a slice of happiness that he gave to millions in his short life. He didn't deserve his sad ending. Great man. Much missed.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Quote: I'll give you a kiss --stan. Not with those teeth 😂🤣😂
I watched an interview featuring Bob Grant. He opened his heart and sent out a message about depression which went unheard
I watched that yesterday, as a fellow sufferer of long term depression (I also attempted suicide) I know how easy it is to get into that mindset and how hard it is to get help. Drop in centres are closed now due to current lockdowns and you can only get help over the phone or Zoom. It's shocking.
Kate Williams hi there, many of us have similar experiences. I agree with you that the current conditions are so very difficult at the moment. I find that a good way of dealing with depression and getting through it and past it, is, to talk to people if it's possible to do so.
When you do have a dark day, please sit down with a cuppa and think of anything, However small that is good and positive and build it up. I've been told that sometimes only YOU can make YOU happy.
Please don't think bad thoughts alone.
@@stevenlangdon-griffiths293 Thank you. There are certain people I can talk to, but only up to a point. I hear what you are saying about writing down positive things etc. It is a nice thing to do but doesn't work long term, unfortunately. Especially when you've had depression for many years. I just hope there is something better around the corner for us all.
its the same with jeremy brett, he hah manic depression, since childhood, he shouts out a lot, thay probably why thy chose him just like rebecca. theres a documentry oh him, not his real name
Bob Grant and reg varney saved my life. watching them in on the buses got me through my drug addiction and got me through my depression. they will never know how much they saved me.
Your comments ring true, if I'm having a bad day I just think of these wonderful peaple and I lighten up, hope you are still good. Lol
@@fran-kittyayers5329 I'm still doing well thankyou. still clean from drugs and go to groups and everything now lol. I still watch on the buses and I'm greatful to the wonderful actors because I would have been lost without them and I do believe they saved my life. i know that might sound cheesy to some lol.😊
@@tobychew100 well done that's amazing, no it's not cheesy, I'm a big sid James fan if I'm down I put on Bless This House I can for a while drift away at those wonderful 1970s comedy's when life seemed so much easier, your not alone lol
He was a great actor on the buses they don’t make them like that anymore
Very true ❤️
Anyone can see Bob is genuinely happy in his role in on the buses. A very good comedy actor, he was perfect for that character.
I met BoB Grant when he was in a play at Hull New Theatre what a lovely man he was so sweet rip Bob
I was just a kid growing up in the 70's and I absolutely loved "On the buses". It was such good fun and Bob was a huge part of its success. And my happiness. Bob, I'm still watching your exploits on ITV3 everyday. Truly, we'll never forget you
R.I.P. Bob Grant, thanks for all the giggles you given me growing up watching On The Buses.
depression is awful i am so sorry for this poor man when he vanished i thought he had taken his life then as well rest in peace and i hope you have found peace x
I meet this man in his last few years he came in the supermarket I worked he was the most friendly gentleman I meet from the acting world,
Which supermarket?
Why
@@tazmanila6522 I don’t know I was just curious. No big deal if you don’t tell me
Loved 'On the Buses' like the previous comment, part of my childhood too. That laugh it was so infectious :)
This video did make me jump though the fact that you were filming in a cemetery at 2.58 saw the back of someones head... LOL
R.I.P. Bob. You always make me smile. Miss those days. Rest in Paradise
I met Bob grant while on holiday in Weymouth, in the 80,s and asked him for an autograph which he very happily obliged a very nice . man gone too soon r,i .p
Always made me laugh as a child and an adult, good entertainer my youngest is 19 and he still watches the buses series over and over now with his girlfriend . What a lovely man rip bob x

As shop steward I am here to tell you . great actor ,rip
Used to be his binman when he lived in Leicestershire,
I used to see him about every now and again.
Part of a great cast, On The Buses was brilliant...😎👍🏼👍🏼
I live in Leicestershire Eddie. What was the village where he lived?
@@ollywareing9419Hi Olly,
It was Waltham On The Wolds, on High Street...
@Eddiek Thanks Eddie. Really interesting
Looking at his photos just now I realize who he reminds me of, a neighbour, there are 5 sisters and the others are all short and stout (like me!) but she is tall, slim and willowly and I just realized she looks exactly the same as Jack! Even her teeth are in the same place and same face shape. Funny enough when she was a child she used to live in Leicestershire! or her Mum did! as did she until she was about 7, then they moved overseas. She's now in her 50's but she's the image of Bob! lol
Love classic comedy and on the buses is one of my all time favourites. although it is sad what happened to Bob Grant after the show. it never fails to put a smile on people’s faces and offer some light hearted entertainment .
great tribute mate, very sad indeed with bob, i still watch them today and they still crack me up, well done
Thank you 👍👍👍👍
Top man. Loved on the buses and the films. Such a sad end to a great man
Met him and his wife at Lecht ski centre in Scotland in 1997, lovely man!
Wonderful memories love from scotland 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Your most welcome 👍👍👍👍
What a great bunch of blokes jack and stan and blakey...God bless you all fellas...
Thanks for the memories 😃😃😃
What a lovely tribute to a great man rip Bob grant aka jack Arthur
Was lucky enough to see him live on stage in “Oh Calcutta” many years ago. His comedy timing was brilliant. A naturally funny man. Not forgotten.
Talented actor and , more importantly a gentleman..God bless you Bob.
I knew his daughter in the mid eighties when I lived in London spitting imagine of her late great father thank you
I have the box set of on the buses, so timeless! Bob grant and reg varney, thank you for the laughs, I wish I had of been around in that era, what a fantastic time it must have been!! RIP Mr Grant.
Thanks for adding the synopsis of his life and struggles after On the Buses ended. A tragedy for sure. At 71 he was retirement age, so I can't fathom the debts and him not being able to live his later years in retirement. A very talented man, sad ending.
So sad they brought so much happiness to the British public over the years
Just got into on the busses and Bob is surly one of the best actors on there. Thanks for your tribute video about him.
A very touching tribute.
Thank you.
Your very welcome and thank you 👍👍👍
Fantastic still watch on the busses..the good old days and actors like Bob... will never die.....
One of the greatest British sitcons shell we never forget
Love on the buses💕poor old Stan it was always Jack that got the birds. R.I.P.
Thank you for doing this video I loved on the buses we Stan and Jack and poor old Blakey
A lovely Tribute well done. Many thanks for taking the time to do it.
Thank you appreciate it
Big thanks for remembering a true legend. Subbed.
We only see the funny side of their character on the screen. We don't realise that TV is one thing but real life is another. Sad he suffered from depression but how could we forget him or On The Buses. It was a classic UK sitcom amongst many from that era. I just loved his shenanigans with Stan (Reg Varney) always teasing Blakey (Stephen Lewis) so damn funny. Anna Karen (Olive) the last one left.
They're all together now. Anna Karen died tragically in a house fire last week 😢
Loved Bob in On the Buses. I never knew of the problems he suffered from in later life. Mental illness is a terrible thing. I've experienced it myself first hand with a close family member. Sadly missed. R. I. P Bob
I too suffer from PTSD myself and making these videos helps me to cope and is the reason why I started videos all the best Mr and Mrs stytch 👍👍👍👍
@@daysgoneby4543 Best Wishes
Thanks for posting.Lovely tribute to a wonderful character actor.Gave so many laughs to so many people.Shame he couldn't find happiness within himself.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
His laugh was grate 😂😂😂
Still watch on the buses.grew up with Bob and the others.gave us so much fun and laughter.something that our society is currently lacking.thank you Bob for the happy times you gave us.God bless you 🙏
Grew up watching on the buses as a child and have fond memories of the series, always watch the reruns and the films which always seem to be shown on bank holidays lol, they just don't make comedies like this anymore wouldn't be pc I suppose, their loss, I think most of the cast have now passed on with the exception of Anna Karen who played olive, gone but not forgotten.
Bob Grant's career stalled after On The Buses, he had very little television work, tried to make a career in Australia like Reg Varney but failed, and was then hit by depression and money problems. It's rather a shame television stations like ITV3, which shows On The Buses and the film spin offs all year round, didn't exist in the seventies and eighties as Bob could have lived off the repeat fees and been in the public eye all the time.
Timeless classic comedy. RIP Bob Grant thankyou for making laugh so much
You are 100% right these people should never be forgotten ever and glad you have taken the time to remind us, it also stirs my memories watching on the buses with my father in the seventies and how good we had it back then, Jack was always funny and causing some sort of problems for the inspector the fun and laughter he brought to the screen and kept people cheerful and he was a valuable asset to television and to almost everyone in the world which I don't think Bob Grant ever realized of his contribution to generations of folk and how good he really was. I only wish someone had his back for what he gave to everyone
Thank you, very respectful.
It is such a shame he couldn’t see anyway out of his troubles. He was so depressed over lack of work. Everyone couldn’t stop thinking of him and his character in on the busses
Thats nice ...he was great...of that period ..which i come from ..
In a way Bob still lives - I'm literally watching him now on ITV 3. Great entertainer.
Me too. He had a sad ending.
@@englishmaninengland4591 ......if I’m not mistaken he died a recluse
Nice tribute 👍🏽 how about Leonard Rossiter” Rigsby” from Rising Damp, one of my favourite shows back in the day.
This was so nice I love on the buses, I got the box set and the films. Bless Bob Grant 🙏❤
Depression is a killer. Its kills you fast or slowly.Oneway or another it will get you. Sadly it is not seen as seriously as it should be.
Sadly you are 100% correct. I speak from a depression ridden existence.
@@peterturley1331
Its horrible
Any mental illness in the uk isn’t taken seriously in the UK as it is a hidden disability nobody cares look at the way ppl with it are just given tablets and left to get on with it, if u had a broken leg just given tablets told to get on with life the hospital would end up in court.
Very true.
True legend great tribute such a sad ending
👍👍👍👍🙏
RIP Bob ,,,great old show on the buses ,,,Australia
So pleased I had the pleasure to grow up with this era of comedy, and it's still going strong! Thank you for sharing and thank you to all the comedy actors/actress's past. X
Thank you for your kind comments very appreciated 🙏👍👍👍
Great tribute 👏 🙏
Thank you 👍👍👍
when I was a teenager I was bought up with this programme I love them, I have them all, in 1978 I got a job as a conductor just to see if it was as good as this programme portrays, a wonderful tribute to a lovely man the fact that we have youtube and people like yourselves to keep their memories alive, that's appreciated so much,,
A great man. Thank you for doing this to remember him.
Thank you for your kind comments 🙏👍👍👍
I used to watch him with my mother when I was a child I always remember him best with his smile and laugh 😆 RIP Jack 🪦
I remember seeing this on TV when he took his life...I couldn't believe it. The series & movies came out a few years before I was born, but loved these as a kid watching the many re-runs of the movies mainly...(1:37 you stated he was born on the 21st April 1932) but the synopsis states the 14th April 1932 which is the correct date according to google.)
He was brilliant loved him rip .🙏🙏🙏
Bob Grant R.I.P. Sad loss. Even sadder how he was tragically lost.
A brilliant tribute to such a funny man rest in peace Bob.
I'm only 34 years old and my dad got me into on the buses and loved it from the 1st time he showed me in the 90s. Still watch and show my own son this show. So funny I was born in the wrong era. What a loss cant believe he never got more roles such a talented actor. Rip Bob and the rest of the crew. There all gone now 💙💙
It's such a shame that the ones who spend their lives making us laugh, are the ones who are so depressed within themselves.
A tragic loss.
R.I.P Bob Grant.
bob grant on the buses part of my child hood fantastic actor that cheeky smile said it all still watching box sets now R I P legend

So sad what happened to him. One of my favourite tv programmes was on the buses. And to think he put that voice on because he was quite upper class with a posh voice.
Definitely agree with you Darren fella it is sad when you think that he put on that voice when he had a different sounding voice but what a great comedian he truly was all the best Mr and Mrs stytch 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the video mate-He was really amazing he made “on the buses” fantastic,he was one in a million-God Bless him!
Bob Grant was a great ACTOR. He was a sensitive, generous man who had little in common with "Jack" - his ability to make that character both believable & someone you rooted for, was totally down to his art & talent. Bob & Stephen Lewis were kind & immensely gifted actors who were denied opportunities after OTB became so loved & iconic.
Stephen Lewis was in Last of the Summer Wine. 🍷
@@vanessalouise8988 and he was Blakey in Don’t drink the water. Which was a spin-off of on the busses about Blakey retired to Spain with his sister.
