from the age of 6 until 13 i read for hours and hours a night and it was amazing - then I discovered netflix and youtube and I can't even read a page without getting bored :/ my attention span has been demolished
Same thing with me. The only thing I used to do was read. I got lost in books. Now as an adult my attention span seems shorter. I watch tv & UA-cam all the time lol... like now
high school killed my love of reading for a while but I'm finally getting back into it! you mentioned pride and prejudice and tbh that book was a cute romance novel that you don't feel too prideful to read and it was a fun time
I got a job as a librarian a few months ago, and i was shocked i couldn't actually read. So i started out with fun non-fiction books (mainly about dogs) haha and now i am finishing a few books a week! So good, i love reading now
I've actually wanted to get back into reading myself and went through the same challenges, except i kinda just gave up... but watching this inspires me to try again, so thanks for that! You should make more adulting videos :D
Personally I started falling out of love with it when I started reading for the wrong reason. I ‘liked’ what was worthy and smart and critically acclaimed. What was mainstream felt “too overused”. Now I’ve come to realise how dumb I was as a teen. I like my trash.
Interesting point of view. I also really like to read. Book series like the hunger games, harry potter, maze runner, narnia,... Are wonderful to get lost in. My "problem" at the moment is that I read so much - not books, but just on my smartphone/computer - during the day that I often don't really have "enough energy" left at the end of the day to read. Watching a show/stream/video doesn't need my complete attention and is something I can "passively" do. So i can completely relate to you. Hopefully I can get back more into reading ^^ Thank you for making videos (and introducing me to other cool channels). Keep up the fantastic work
i've wanted to get back into reading for the longest time and ever since a video i watched on how much another youtuber had learnt from reading, it inspired me to start reading again. before, all i was doing was binge-watching shows on netflix but now that i've finished two e-books (YA :D) in two weeks, i feel a lot more accomplished. so for all those out there who would like to read get back into reading, just do it! just pick up a book that you're genuinely interested in reading. it doesn't matter which medium/platform you use, so long as you're reading. good luck! :)
I feel the same, I got so many books on my bookshelf that seemed interesting but just haven't read them yet. Also, more Adulting with Mayuko videos would be awesome :D
Hey Mayuko, I'm a CS sophomore. I loved reading when I was in high school, too. I want to start reading again. I'll start with John Green novels. Thanks for the video. 😊
I totally agree with you. I was on the same journey, as in reading felt like a chore. Ironically, I actually use Audible and it really is enjoyable. The fact that you pay for the subscription and get 1 free credit kinda forces you to "read", but like you said, it unlocks these worlds. Also one should never stop learning. Keep up the great content! I like the adulting videos.
I recently got back into reading too. I used to be one of those dudes that would go to the library, check out 5+ books, and sometimes not even read one. I have a few books at home so I have been on those but last week I got a limit of only three books and I am almost done with the second one. I think we all sometimes get overwhelmed when we see so many books that we want them all but that ends up being a mistake.
I really relate to the struggle of reading for fun :( ... As a rising sophomore in college, it's so difficult to find time to read and also have the mindset to enjoy what you're reading instead of being obsessed with the page count. It's funny because I actually read Turtles All The Way Down as one of the first books to get me back into reading for fun. Here's to hopefully reading many more books :3 !
loved the video! im having a similar/ alternate experience because it turns out i used to read a lot in order to escape my current situation or as the equivilent of checking one's phone in order to avoid anxiety or awkwardness with other ppl "sometimes ppl use thought to not participate in life" - someone in perks, my fave
Love this video also would be down to see book review videos. Or videos on how books changed the way you think. Also I sooo struggle with reading. My parents had a no English in the house rule and so I just never read books cause there would be words I don’t understand and I feel intimidated by the big words. So I’m so going to check out the young adult section! Love the videos
I used to love reading when I was little but as I got older and started high school I mostly stopped reading. I really missed the feeling of getting into a good book so I started getting back into reading a couple years ago by picking up mostly YA novels although over the last year or so my reading has slowed down again and I've been really struggling to pick up a book. Whenever I do I am also always looking at the page number and easily lose my focus which makes it a lot harder to get lost in book. I was actually hoping to be starting a degree in English Literature this year but I feel so lost with my reading at the moment and just haven't found the motivation to start again. I think it may actually really help me to pick up some books outside my comfort zone instead since while I do like some YA books I think I was also getting a little bit bored of some of the typical YA tropes. I'm really going to try and make an effort to pick up a new book soon and try some new genres to discover what it is I love most so thank you for inspiring me! 💗
Mayuko good to see u, Im studying about Information Tech and im still working on Java and Python. and actually im super cool in website front end programming. and you enlarge my awareness on top o that 😊
Hey hey hey!!! This is soo exciting I'm literally reading the same book right now!! Your videos are soo helpful, man, I love them. I recently checked out your software engg vids and I was hoping if you could post or talk about your resume and how you built it? It would be soo nice and helpful, thank you so so much!
I’ve been struggling with the same thing! But I never thought about toning down my reading expectations from Don Quixote to Turtles All The Way Down. I think pride is part of it, but I also just thought I’d be bored reading YA fiction. To hear you say it’s still engaging as an adult is really encouraging and I’m excited to try this! Thanks!
Found your channel through Marina's video and when scanning through your videos, found this one. By the way, you should read Red Rising series, it's sooo gewt. Saw the first book on your shelf, assuming you already read that, then you should continue to the second book. Lots of unexpected twists, just remember don't throw your book by the time you finish it 😜 and last thing, love your video 👍
It's really interesting topic. When I was in school I've been 'forced' to read certain books. Then we had tests based on those books. It was nightmare for me. But the main problem was that I had to read them. Some of them could have been decent, maybe even fun to read. At the same time I've always read some books 'not for school', some fiction and stuff, and I really enjoyed it. I still do. It's always great to get away from problems of this world :)
Hi and sorry for the bad english. I really like your UA-cam chanel and ig posts and would love to hear more about how you've choosed your vocation and how it feels to be a grown up. Cheers from Brazil!
I also fell into the same rut when trying to get back into reading, I read books that I felt I “should” be reading. Smart books, classics, etc. I just struggled and struggled to get through these. My daughter, who loves to read, recognized this and said that my problem is that I read books that I feel I should be reading, and not books I want to read. I LOVE World War II books, boots on the ground stories like “With The Old Breed”, “Helmet For My Pillow”, “Flags Of Our Fathers”, and I just devoured these books. I’m not saying I should never try to tackle something difficult that’s going to make me grow, but not to put so much emphasis on this that I just trash the whole reading idea in the first hour. Thanks for this video, I related to a lot of it.
Love YA novels (I've got a teenage daughter, so we share books) and memoirs, but honestly, Pride & Prejudice is one of my all-time favorite books. It's literally the only book in my entire life I've ever read more than once. Hope you give it a try one more time. The Rosamund Pike version of P&P on Audible is pretty great, too.
Just as a warning to anyone who has OCD, I started reading Turtles All The Way Down and was immediately very triggered and anxious. Just be wary, especially if you struggle with thoughts of contamination/cleanliness.
im not sure if i have ocd or not, and the contents of the book isnt something i worry about often but it definitely did make me anxious at times :,) other than that, i enjoyed the book
i used to read all the time for fun because i loved it, but now i can’t focus because of social media and it makes me cry sometimes, my mom bought so many books for lockdown but i can’t stay on one page anymore. thank you for this video💖
I’ve hated reading my whole life but now I’m 21 (graduating college in 2 weeks!!) and trying to learn how to enjoy it :) staring with YA romance has definitely helped. Hoping to really blossom as an experienced reader.
I am 22 so I am about to leave the college age group but I totally relate your situation. I find that changing the format helps. I find that I am more likely to finish a book using a kindle than a paperback.
I used to enjoy reading as a kid and teenager. I would read both light novels and classic literature (big fan of Dostoevsky) , even novels I was required to read for school. I didn't have any problem in reading for hours, without checking social media or browsing the internet. Then smartphone era began and I realised how my attention span was getting worse and worse..I couldn't focus on reading anymore, I had to check my phone every 5 minutes, check my facebook notifications, see if anyone messaged me and so on.. so reading became kind of bothersome. From someone who used to read a book per week/every 2 weeks in high-school I ended up reading 1-2 books per year...
The beginning of this video describes my entire life. Being forced to do things I used to like, making me not like them. Slowly but surely turning those things all back into likes! I like to read by chapter or time length, instead of page number. As long as I dont cheat and look to see when the chapter ends, its always a surprise and I feel accomplished and I'm usually surprised by how much I read.
I felt the same way about these self-help books and freud and Goethe since I'm German but I said okay Im really into historical romance and English history so I picked up a Jane Austen book and Im amazed at how easy it is for me to read and to want to continue reading I may not understand every single relation but the way its written is captivating
this was so relevant to literally like this exact moment (also, I think you aren't allowed in the high school reading process at all! It's sad, I think we all started reading less then) Happy to see you can read easily again!
Yep, I have been through to exact same thing after graduating. I tried to read novels for fun, after a few pages I lost interest fast. I find that I enjoy reading non-fiction books more (biographies, etc).
I have never been into reading but everywhere I look people post about how good it is for you, so I'm using this to convince myself that I should start haha
I took a dystopian literature class my last quarter of college for a humanities requirement. There was soooo much reading, but I loved it and it was a nice break from my other classes. But now, I have the same issue where I'm struggling to read consistently. I tend to read every once in a while for an hour or so, and then out of the blue, I'll just spend a whole weekend reading and then not read again for a month lol.
Adulting with Mayuko :D. I'm glad I watched this. I also had to relearn how to read. I'm also looking for ways to read deeper and faster +store important things in memory.
I would really like to get back to reading. Not academic books but books that I'm really interested in. My high school days where the peak of my book addiction. Then college came, it's like I totally fell back.
I've decided to start reading a lot more again to bring back my once curious and imaginative self. Also, I plan to switch from being a programmer to being a web comic artist someday.
Before the pandemic, I read during my commute, which gave me ~2 hours of solid reading time every (work) day. Ever since we all started WFH, I ironically have been unable to find any time to read. I haven't read a book in two years.
Was forced to be a Software Engineering student by my step dad. Can't help it even though I prefer to dp art. Welp, even if I'm working, I plan to practice doing digital arts and studying new languages. Learning new skills often help and it will keep your mind fresh and always feeling updated. Being focused only on one field is bad and would cause burnout. Also, I don't plan to work as a Software Engineer for a very long time. Perhaps even quit and pursue a career in art after working in the Software Engineering field for 7 to 15 years.
Honestly, I’m in high school now, and reading just got sucked out of me. I’ve tried reading Strange the Dreamer and I can’t get through it. School really just sucks it out of me.
Hi! I have the same feeling too. I really want to rekindle my passion for reading all sorts of book but I don't know where to start. I tried. Many times. Maybe I never tried hard enough. Huhuhu
I'm sorta opposite to most people: once I started reading critically in high school and learned to write essays on them my love for reading exploded. I liked it before then but something about carefully understanding what's going happening on deep levels made me want more. Nowadays I try to finish at least a book every couple weeks.
I'm just about done reading Turtles All the Way Down. I thought it's funny he puts some things about anxiety and social situations. I shouldn't comment too much on the heavier stuff without spoilers, so... yeah. Just read it, ppl. Not too sad to finish it, but then there's work looking for the next novel. If you got recommendations, we're all ears. Thanks for sharing your love for this genre.
I only want say a complement, read is very good when you are learning another language, i am learning english and the books and your channel helping me a lot. (help this brazilian to speak a better english and correct me,thanks people)
I used to read 24/7 until my mom got mad. Then a year ago i got a reading slump that is still going on. Theres tons of books i want to read and books i bought that i know are great but i couldnt. But ill try again. The last book i read was harry potter the deathly hallows like 9 months ago.
You're just one short of 200 comments on this video so thought I'd put in my two bits and make it an even two hundred. I very rarely read books that others recommend because their recommendations rarely fit the interests of a self-centered narcissist like me. You'll probably not even read this comment on a video you uploaded 10 months ago but I'll recommend a book nevertheless. My highly recommended book is "Till We Have Faces" by CS Lewis. It's a quick read and I think you'll like it even if you're not familiar with the myth of Cupid and Psyche. I like your videos. You've inspired me to befriend yappies but there are none in Kansas, for obvious reasons. Godspeed in all of your holy endeavors. 😉
After I watched this ideo,I tried to find some of good way to continue reading. Now,I´ve read only 3page everyday. It makes me easy to continue reading.
When I was little my mom did not let us watch TV so I got a collection of almost 300 books. And that’s how I got into reading and I am currently trying to get back into, so I am starting to read before bed again.
I want to get back into reading too. Young Adult fiction is a guilty pleasure of mine. I keep pressuring myself to read because that is what I am supposed to. I totally miss being a teenager and all the feelings I had. Now I want to read To All the Boys I've Loved before books series.
Eh, why the heck not. Here's my goodreads account! www.goodreads.com/helloMayuko
I want to learn how to read
from the age of 6 until 13 i read for hours and hours a night and it was amazing - then I discovered netflix and youtube and I can't even read a page without getting bored :/ my attention span has been demolished
Me too
Same thing with me. The only thing I used to do was read. I got lost in books. Now as an adult my attention span seems shorter. I watch tv & UA-cam all the time lol... like now
I feel you..
Same. I used to finish books so quickly. And now I have a book lying next to me, and I open UA-cam or Instagram or watch a movie ☹️
Same :(
I used to love reading but now, I just can't focus when I read.
I'm definitely guilty of buying more books than I read too 🙈
high school killed my love of reading for a while but I'm finally getting back into it! you mentioned pride and prejudice and tbh that book was a cute romance novel that you don't feel too prideful to read and it was a fun time

Long books or short ones cause a few a week is pretty good
I've actually wanted to get back into reading myself and went through the same challenges, except i kinda just gave up... but watching this inspires me to try again, so thanks for that! You should make more adulting videos :D
I read twilight cause my crush told me to read it. No regrets
team edward or jacob?
mayuko jacob, duh, I always thought I was more of a werewolf. I actually took a quiz for it
same here man but I was already in a relationship with her lol It was surprisingly a great read that enticed me the entire time.
A crush motivated me to read it too lol.. I found it a pretty suspenseful read even though in the end the story was a whole lot of nonsense
Lmao
Personally I started falling out of love with it when I started reading for the wrong reason. I ‘liked’ what was worthy and smart and critically acclaimed. What was mainstream felt “too overused”. Now I’ve come to realise how dumb I was as a teen.
I like my trash.
Interesting point of view. I also really like to read. Book series like the hunger games, harry potter, maze runner, narnia,... Are wonderful to get lost in. Darn.... I remember when I was like 11-15 I could read for hours and not get bored but now I have a very small attention span
i've wanted to get back into reading for the longest time and ever since a video i watched on how much another youtuber had learnt from reading, it inspired me to start reading again. before, all i was doing was binge-watching shows on netflix but now that i've finished two e-books (YA :D) in two weeks, i feel a lot more accomplished. so for all those out there who would like to read get back into reading, just do it! just pick up a book that you're genuinely interested in reading. it doesn't matter which medium/platform you use, so long as you're reading. good luck! :)

thanks for this mayuko, your insight is highly valuable
Also- tech was something I had never thought about before and your videos have made me so much more interested in it
awwwwwwww thank you!! ❤️
green eggs and ham is excellent
very eggselent.
This was a really helpful video, thanks Mayuko!
I recently got back into reading too. I used to be one of those dudes that would go to the library, check out 5+ books, and sometimes not even read one. I have a few books at home so I have been on those but last week I got a limit of only three books and I am almost done with the second one. I think we all sometimes get overwhelmed when we see so many books that we want them all but that ends up being a mistake.
great advice! I'll try it :)
Thanks for sharing your experiences throughout your videos, very helpful and fun, keep it up!
loved the video! im having a similar/ alternate experience because it turns out i used to read a lot in order to escape my current situation or as the equivilent of checking one's phone in order to avoid anxiety or awkwardness with other ppl

Seems like a universal story 😂
I also only started reading again for fun after high school (but still in university though)
Hi and sorry for the bad english. I really like your UA-cam chanel and ig posts and would love to hear more about how you've choosed your vocation and how it feels to be a grown up. Cheers from Brazil!

Thanks for sharing.. I have been looking at classics to read (cos I should), when I should be looking at books I wanna read.

How to get to read again: read at least 10 pages each night before going to sleep
Soooo much relate. I got back into it through YA-novels too.
I love reading (french books) Marcel Proust, Chateaubriand, Flaubert, Sartre ... 😍
You would think it's easy reading. But our concentration is smaller then a pebble. Due to the fact of social media
Mayuko is like my go to energy / motivation pill to push myself to be better everyday
I took a dystopian literature class my last quarter of college for a humanities requirement. There was soooo much reading, but I loved it and it was a nice break from my other classes. I tend to read every once in a while for an hour or so, and then out of the blue, I'll just spend a whole weekend reading and then not read again for a month lol.
and that's okay too! no one is forcing you to read so finding your own pace is also great ☺️
Adulting with Mayuko :D. I'm glad I watched this. I also had to relearn how to read. I'm also looking for ways to read deeper and faster +store important things in memory.

i relate so much to this haha! starting to read again with the harry potter series
Give Nevermoor a try! It's a really cozy read. It feels like a mix between Harry Potter and John Green
Is that blue boat on the shelf a clay task you made at elementary school?
If it's so, it's incredible it made it so far. Congrats.
Have you ever read a book from Haruki Murakami?
leqo K I loved his movie Spirited Away
Yes I have! I read Norwegian Wood and loved it. Currently summoning enough energy to read the Wind Up Bird Chronicles and 1Q84.

I ❤️ you. You are such an inspiration
(help this brazilian to speak a better english and correct me,thanks people)
I love reading as well :))
This inspired me to get back to my current book *_1Q84_** by Haruki Murakami* thanks Mayuko ^_^
I have been trying to read this book for years!!! So hard to get through even 10%. I hope you managed to finish it!
I hope you could make more book review videos in the future! ドキドキ文芸部!
I am currently reading How to win friends and Influence people and listening to Soft skills by John Sonmez.
Congrats on achieving 1million subscribers :D
"stoop to that level" xD its okay mayuko, the twilight series deserves that sass
Bawkah?? BAKAAA
Same with me...reading became an ordeal. I like audio versions.
After I watched this ideo,I tried to find some of good way to continue reading.
Now,I´ve read only 3page everyday.
It makes me easy to continue reading.
Since you enjoy memoirs, you have to read Mans Search For Meaning. Its such a great book!
When I was little my mom did not let us watch TV so I got a collection of almost 300 books. And that’s how I got into reading and I am currently trying to get back into, so I am starting to read before bed again.
When people ask me if I read books I say " yeah a good amount " and then I go and pull out a physics , calculus or chemistry book.....
i used to love books. but now it became so boring. i want to get into reading again.
I want to get back into reading too. Young Adult fiction is a guilty pleasure of mine. I keep pressuring myself to read because that is what I am supposed to. I totally miss being a teenager and all the feelings I had. Now I want to read To All the Boys I've Loved before books series.
I'm 34, a mom, a data center tech at Google, and I love Young Adult novels. Lol. Laini Taylor is my favorite author! Lol.
