perfect timing!! I start my first ever software engineering job on monday and have been feeling so nervous about it. thank you for all the words of encouragement and good luck to anyone else in a similar position!
Such an underrated channel. Her advice is actually useful, clearly communicated, well edited, and never negative I usually feel better emotionally watching these videos.
I'm starting, not my first engineering position but the one that is going to change the trajectory of my career, this coming Monday so this video is perfect timing. I'm nervous about what is going to be expected of me, if I'm going to be able to do the work since they're using technologies that are new to me and whether or not I'm going to do a good job. I'm just trying to take it one day at a time and try to treat it like school by being curious, asking questions and doing my best.
I’m breaking into tech and my first day is next week. I’m excited but a lot of what was said I can definitely relate to right now.. the nerves, the feeling of needing to be productive, etc Overall I feel like this video provided great advice and I’m going to watch it again before my first day ✨🫶🏽 thank you!!
This bit about "they're not expecting you to be productive right away" is entirely on a per-company basis. I've interviewed with and worked at companies that expected you to be productive as soon as you walked in the door. Ford even interviewed me on things that weren't in the job description. It's toxic as hell and still happens, even at companies that really don't deserve to demand that kind of labor. Now, Formation might only care about FAANG, but there are still a ton of companies out there with unreasonable demands, and I think these videos should start being inclusive of experiences outside of California.
Loving the different examples from other people in this video! There’s definitely imposter syndrome I felt even after 10 years in the industry. I also recommend reading The First 90 Days as a good guide on ramping up in any job.
Woah big news holy moly! Congrats on getting back into the career path. Honestly, I think it would only help your channel. I’ve noticed a ton of software UA-cam channels quit their job to pursue YT, but eventually they run out of things to say. Especially if the channel is focused around the industry they just left haha. So overall, I don’t know the context as to why you rejoined the workforce-but I think it was the right choice. Here’s to continued awesome context alongside a blossoming career.
I literally started my first tech job last week. Was stressing hardcore the days before but I knew it was going to be fine (did an internship there). Good tips in the video 😄
To be honest I am surprised by the timing ahahaha Today Monday 26 Sept is my first day in my new Job, despite that I have experience, the nervous, excitement and I must admit that I feel like a newbie again, so this video helped me to relax a bit and start in the correct way for the first day. Let's have fun in the new job!!!!
In the teams I have been in so far, new team members (no matter if they'd just finished university, college or whatever or if they were experienced) are treated like any other team member. The training is on the job, experience comes through pair-programming, mentoring, code-reviews, trainings, slack time etc. There is no individual responsibility to build a good product, it's always the responsibility of the whole team. Hence, new team members have always felt welcome. Of course, when hiring people the main factors are not skills or experience, but more on how eager and willing they are to learn and participate and their ability to work with others in a team. In addition teams are often supported by a Scrummaster, people lead or team coach to make sure everyone feels happy. In addition, often a "champion" is assigned to new employees to help them navigate through difficult situations within the company. It's investment for the company and hence the company will ensure that new employees feel welcome. However, this all might be different for US companies, and you might need services such as formation.
this is video is timely, especially now in my new company for a few months where in I still don't have much contribution which feels weird and wrong, and also transitioning from a full stack java developer into javascript and backend developer. Let's enjoy our first few months guys in order for us to contribute more in the future! Thanks mayuko ♥
I personally want to congratulate everyone who is an iOS dev. As a person with a web dev background, I tried it and all I felt was a world of confusion and 2 groups of people telling me to use UIKit or SwiftUI. I won’t go into much more detail but I decided that if I want to make an app and put it into the App Store, I will go the hybrid route.
i miss your videos and have been rewatching old ones as i, a recent CS graduate, am on the job hunt for my break into tech ! with the tech recession happening at faang level companies, ive just been met with rescinded offer after rescinded offer because of the layoffs and hiring freezes. hopefully you're doing well! i think i saw somewhere that you're working in software dev again? which is why you've put youtube to the side, but i hope that endeavor is just as fulfilling for you and your personal growth!
I WISH I could be starting somewhere right now lol Last few interviews i broke down. Its so bad, I decided to just apply locally where hopefully they're not going to test me like the big companies
You’ll only get better as you do more interviews. Very few people, if any, can ace interviews without tons of practice. Don’t let a few duds get you down. You got this!
I noticed you said, "mid-september" for the announcement of the winner of the scholarship. Was it supposed to be Oct? Absolutely love your videos! Thanks for the content
Hi Mayuko, I totally do agree with your points, especially as a new hire. The personal pressure of wanting to get yourself productive in your few weeks of resumption is something I deal with. Thanks for sharing this tips ! Such a huge fan of your channel ❤
Perfect timing! I started my job as a software engineer last week, everything said was so helpful, thank you! Wishing everybody watching this video all the best with their careers!
This video is definitely what I need in nowadays. It is sometimes hard to remember what I've accomplished in the past, it is so easy to let myself to some kind of impostor syndrome. Thank you for sharing experiences Mayuko!
I am starting remote as a web developer in less than two weeks. It'll be my first tech job. And this helps me to know what I should expect. Thank you for the video, and thanks for mentioning remote positions!!
Mayuko, have you met Kylie Ying yet? She graduated from MIT and is a whiz at computer science. Maybe you could interview her for your channel. Here's a link to her channel: ua-cam.com/video/EtujJjKmfN0/v-deo.html

You're more experienced for the next one. ATB!

This is very helpful, emotionally and spiritually. First times are the most scariest.

Perfect timing!! Thanks Mayuko :)

💯
Thank you so much for the advice, Mayuko! ♥
Just got hired a few months ago for engineering role remotely. Def taking the advice of getting to meetings a few min earlier to chat
One advice I can give after a decade in software development is to not get fully remote job as a first job you get. P.S. Good video on the subject.
What is this timing?! I am starting a new research engineering/data science job this Monday. LOL thanks for this video and wish me luck :)
I needed this 8 months ago haha. Great video!
