I referenced your videos several times last year during my first bike build so I owe you a big thanks for all your help. One clarification, how can I tell if my freehub is the type that requires the 1.8mm spacer? Thanks in advance for you help.
I installed this last week on my Trek Fuel EX7 29'er. It came stock with a 3x9 configuration. Running it with an XT RD-M8000 Derailleur, an XT M8000 shifter and an SLX M7000 crankset w/32T Shimano M7000 chain ring and a KMC chain. Just an awesome setup. Shifts as smooth as butter and the jump from 40 to 46 is much less drastic than the 37-46 jump on Shimano's version. Ready to tackle some hills I've previously struggled with. Always enjoy your videos sir. Thanks!
Cassette arrived today. Ordered xtr 11speed deraiuller and raceface 32t narrow wide chainring hopefully everything works well and friend gave me his 11speed xt shifter.
Do you think it would work on a road bike? I'm thinking of using it with a 46t ring. Does it look tatty quickly? The black finish worries me but it looks great new.
As long as the shifter indexing is accurate I don't see why not. Five years later my black one is still black except for the very tips of the gear teeth. It doesn't look bad at all however.
I just bought the 11-50T 11-speed cassette from SunRace. I don't need the extra range, the only reason i bought it was because I bought a Shimano M5100 derailleur and was using a 11-42T cassette with it. Well i didn't know that the M5100 derailleurs min cog size was 51T so my b-gap was way too big. I went with this cassette because its only one tooth off 51T and it had the quickest shipping on Amazon, i ordered it a half hour ago and it's scheduled to be delivered later today. I could have went with the much cheaper 11-51T M5100 cassette from Shimano which is about $40 less but it wouldn't be delivered until next weekend and I'm an impatient person lol.
Well done, Sir. Probably the most informative video I've seen in the last couple of months. You answered pretty much all the questions someone going from 3x9 to 1x11 might ask. Cheers.
I like the spacing on the Shimano..closer in the center gear where I ride the most and then larger towards the top and bailout gear. I like the fairness of your comparisons a lot.
Hello, does the black finish/paint flake-off easily during use or does it wear more subtly, like anodizing ( I know it's no anodizing but Shimano uses phospate). Is the black paint chemically bonded or more on the surface and temporary?

Interesting to see, that the recently presented cassette Box TWO from Box Components is exactly the same! Even the hole patterns are the same. But the Sunrace is half the price!
I was looking at the Guerrilla Gravity Pedalhead bike, but with the videos out there including yours on the E13 i'm not sold on it. I'm thinking of going XT and using either the Sunrace CSMS8 or the Shimano XT 11-46. Theres a lot of great deals online for the Sunrace 11-46. What are your thoughts on the Sunrace over the XT 11-46?
That sram cassette you weighted said 10-42 but you said 10-50 in the video. Shimano also have a slx 11-46 cassette which comes in cheaper then the sunrace for us in NZ.
It looks like you have a 1mm aluminum spacer on the freehub body before you install the cassette. I noticed on your Sunrace MX3 (10 speed) video you do not use an aluminum spacer before you add the cassette. What is the reason to add or eliminate the small aluminum spacer before you put the cassette on your freehub body?
Using the SunRace, can this be used for everyday riding? Or this intended for downhil and enduro racing? Love the idea of going 1x10 or 1x11 for simplicity.
Great review-as usual. What size front chainring are you using with this 11-46 cassette? I'm still running a 1x9 (32x11-36). It works pretty well-forces me to muscle my 33lbs Specialized Enduro (year 2000 model) up the steep sections.
Great comparison! Lately I've just gotten a new bike, it comes with a 3x9. I'm actually thinking of changing to a 2x but I'm not sure if the hub can fit in a 11 cassette. Is there any measurement that I can do? Maybe from the dropout?
Will this cassette fit on a bike with a 135mm dropout? I'm rebuilding my old bike and want to change from the existing 3x7 to a 1x11. But my bike has only 135mm rear dropouts
Hi Excellent review. Months ago i asked you how it works now i've been using the mx8 11-40 with a 34t in front and in my opinion works great shift smoother than SRAM but not as smooth as Shimano. My question is do i need that spacer for the sunrase cassette? because the big cog has marked the spokes
May I enquire how you determine that a spacer is needed? Some of my Shimano / Sram standard 11-speed cassette shafts, indeed, do happen to require a spacer for 11-speed cassettes, while others don't. Very confusing. Are there different standards for non-XD(R) 11-speed hubs, or am I missing something? Thank you.
@@LoveMTB Thank you for the clarification. So, there's no way to know in advance of installing the cap (save for measuring the freehub body length, maybe?). My current bikes are gravel - some have, apparently, the MTB standard freehubs, others - road-specific ones.

Also, this is coming from someone running XTR everywhere else: front shifter and derailleur, XTR cassette, etc.

Enjoy your channel, LoveMTB. Seems whenever I am looking to upgrade/replace something on my drivetrain, you have a recent video discussing it. Disappointed that SunRace didn't make the 40T cog for this cassette in alloy as it would've dropped overall weight to below Shimano's XT 11-46T.
They use alloy for the big cog on their "premium" (lightweight) 11-40T cassettes, so I'm not sure longevity was the issue, but who knows? Not bashing SunRace, btw. Been rocking an MX3 11-42T since last April--1,700 miles and counting. Prefer their spacing to Shimano's, plus they are lighter and have a little bonus bling. Just wish their 11-46T had been lighter. Thanks again for your videos. Keep 'em coming!
This Shimano XT isn't 11-46. This is 11-42!!!! Just google photos of 11-46, it has two BLACK big sprockets made from aluminium, not one (on the video). The difference between 10th (37t) and 11th (46t) is terrible, biggest sprocket looks like a pan.
Curious as to why you say you don't think you're ever going to buy the shimano 11-46. I ask because I am currently looking into upgrading to an 11 speed drivetrain and I was looking at the shimano 11-46t. Thanks.
I would like to expand my SRAM 10 x 32 cassette for my road bike to a 40 because of long big rides coming up. Can I use one you featured or another? Bike shop told me I was limited to a 32. Great video!!! Thanks
No not if you have the right size chainring . It's ridiculous you have a sprocket bigger than the brake disc . This never used to be the case . People have been biking for year off road (including myself) and never needed such a large sprocket . Just train more and get stronger .
People have been biking for years without carbon brake discs too................ See how dumb that sounds? Just curious, what's your average distance and elevation gain on a single ride? Running 1x11, wide range cassettes are great for anyone with lots of climbing AND descending. With 11/46 I can run a 32 too chain-ring and still climb 7k feet in a 30 mile ride (sometimes with grades over 15% for over a mile), BUT not run out of gear on the downhills. By the way, 50T sprockets don't have to be custom. 1x12 Eagle is pretty common now.
I don't know the elevation grade but if you have heard of the Surrey hills in the UK then you will now that is very steep . Also a carbon disc significantly reduces your brake's weight as well as rotational weight . All I see large sprockets do is add weight when it isn't needed .
I am in the US at the southern end of the Appalachian mountain range. I just looked up (on Strava) a 42 mile ride in the Surrey Hills and it only covers 4000 feet of climbing. We typically climb 4000 feet in a 20 mile ride...........meaning steeper grades and considerably tougher climbs. So yeah, that's why a 46T is useful.
I referenced your videos several times last year during my first bike build so I owe you a big thanks for all your help. One clarification, how can I tell if my freehub is the type that requires the 1.8mm spacer? Thanks in advance for you help.

How about Shimano XT M8000 Shadow+ 11 Speed Rear Mech
@@LoveMTB by GS you mean long cage ?
@@LoveMTB medium cage will look crap on my 29er
@@LoveMTB well now I know what you told me to get medium cage. I have 32t in front single and 11-46 in the back and medium cage will be perfect for that. I just read about differences and what's what
Thanks mate
Will you test the xtr cassette range?
Im not a strong rider, can I use this with a 2x up front???
LoveMTB thanks
hello is posible to install the mx8 in a 9v hub? thanks
So if I have a sram free hub do I have to select a sram specific cassette or is it universal
Well I knew that you had to match freehubs and now I think about it it was a silly question but I would like to buy it for the 46
What's the difference between MX8 and MX80?
m8 weighs more, and different material.
will the sunrace fit onto a XD freehub
Is this compatible with the SLX Derailleur? Please help anyone.
What’s the difference between their CSMS3 and MX3 model?
does the chain drop when back pedaling at 46t?
Why you back pedal at all? 🤷🏽♂️
Look forward to it, LoveMTB.
Is this work with SRAM NX?
This Shimano XT isn't 11-46. This is 11-42!!!! Just google photos of 11-46, it has two BLACK big sprockets made from aluminium, not one (on the video). The difference between 10th (37t) and 11th (46t) is terrible, biggest sprocket looks like a pan.
Please make an update video for this.... thanks! :)
Could you do a review on the 50t sun race cassette please
LoveMTB okay thanks anyway. Just wondering as apparently they don't work in the 2 to last gear
Hi!can u do it a video vith oil lubes?
Curious as to why you say you don't think you're ever going to buy the shimano 11-46. I ask because I am currently looking into upgrading to an 11 speed drivetrain and I was looking at the shimano 11-46t.
Thanks.
Very interesting for your information cheers
Good cassette but cant backpedal on 46 cog
it's beautiful
I would like to expand my SRAM 10 x 32 cassette for my road bike to a 40 because of long big rides coming up. Can I use one you featured or another? Bike shop told me I was limited to a 32.
Great video!!! Thanks
ive used sunrace a view time and its just cheap material. i broke 2 in less than a year.
Folded 10th gear after a dozen rides on a tough climb
Excelent what is te rear hub the blue, thanks
Great channel ;)
4:57 if it cross threads you are f'ed, because the cass tool won't fit...
perfect
looks like CASSETTE WEIGHTS getting heavier as we go to 11 SPEEDS !!!!!!!!!!!!! compared to 7-8 speeds at 280 grams
Joni English well yeah... more materials more cassette :s
Why the actual hell would you want a 46T sprocket ?!!! I have even seen a 50T sprocket (custom made) . You really don't need that size .
Range, that's why.
