Back Yard Putting Green Renovation | Using the SunJoe as a Verticutter

- I did not stay on top of my disease prevention and my watering well enough on the putting green. This combined with the fact that it seems the Penncross that I planted last year is doing much better through the summer than the existing bentgrass in my backyard, I decided it was time to do a kind of mini renovation on the putting green.
As a part of that, I started back in the beginning of July with an experiment to see if verticutting the bare areas with the SunJoe would help the grass to spread and fill in. Although it appears this worked to some degree, it was not working fast enough for my taste. So, we came back through and verticut the whole thing again, seeded, watered, top dressed with sand, seeded again, and kept watering.
The results at the end are 9 days after the initial seeding and I am very excited about what I'm seeing and the prospects for the green and practice facility through the end of this year and what it's going to look like through fall.

I’m very impressed. I’ve been growing lawns for 30 years, but I’ve never tried doing a putting green. I may give it a shot.Great video
Where are you located.? I’m in Southern Ontario
Southern Wisconsin. It's really not that difficult.
Love that putting green man. It's looking nice! Great shirt too. 👕
Thanks, Matt. May jump the gun and cut it this weekend and see if all the new grass dies lol.
@@JasonSeiberlich patience is the real struggle in extreme lawncare lol.
Well thought-out and executed. Should yield a very good result. Expect the green will look better than ever soon.
Thank you.
I hope mine turns out that nice. Thanks for vids. It is really helping me through my process of getting my green started.
Thank you. Wasn't sure the verticut was necessary but the lines of germination along the grooves are proving that was actually a fairly critical step.
@@JasonSeiberlich I actually did the same exact thing with the Sun Joe before I seeded and it worked good for me also.
Early results look great! I'm sure you'll provide another update sometime down the road but I can't wait to see it filled in completely
Me too. Ran out of patience for it to fill in on its own.
1. I'm not slow w extension cord knowledge. They make cords diff in the South and they follow you like a rabid snake.
2. Start water that lawn or I'm going to have to turn you in..... To who I don't know....
3. Dannnnnng.... That green came on STRONG!!! Man!!!! Nice job!
Lol that's pretty funny. Landscaping is finally done so time to water and do other stuff. Thanks
Looks good and I’m happy to see you’ve been watering lol looks like the seed is doing a good job 👍🏼
Knew you would be pleased. Draught got so bad I have no other choice but to just give in to watering all the time.
@@JasonSeiberlich it’s all worth it when it comes to the putting green though 👌🏼
Awesome stuff
Thank you.
Looking good
Thank you.
I recently did the same heavy topdress/overseed; after 4-days the existing putting green grasses have begun to grow "thru" the sand and are exceeding 1/2" in height. When did you do your first cut after the renovation? I don't want the grass to get too long...however if I cut now I will more than likely kill the un-germinated seed.
I maintained it with a manual reel at a little over a half inch. There are additional videos around this project and a subsequent project (granted the latter failed), on how to go about maintaining and then bringing the height down.
could you put in the description like what seed youre using? im on the fence between a few. love the content.
I went as cheap as possible with penncross. Probably go T1 or alpha or one of those for the main event when that happens.
Great one!! Looks like is working great and soon will look amazing 💪🏻 When you say verticuting with the SunJoe you mean using the scarifier right?
Thank you. Yes the scarify cartridge.
I just bought this verticutter on sale. I plan on redoing my green. I originally used the outside pride true putt seed. Didnt take like i had hoped-for. Going with a penn cross. Does this sound like it will work. Scarify, then verticut, rake everything up potting soil sand mix to level out low areas then seed and water?
I think scuffing it up is good. One thing I'd maybe suggest is just get the seed established first and matured a bit and then level with just sand. You could do the sand soil mix, but for leveling the sand alone will do best.
Sounds like a plan. Now if i could just find a greens mower id be really set lol.
Thanks for the input.
is it safe to use all these fertilizers if you have pets? jw wondering, thanks for the vids!
I have a dog and 2 kids. Wait until the herbicides/weed killers are dry and if you can have the fertilizers watered in.
@@JasonSeiberlich awesome! Good to know 🤙🏼
Question... I sanded my green trying to get smooth but my issue is the reel picking up sand. Should I raise the HOC until it is filled in thick and then lower? I know it's not completely smooth yet but I'm trying to sand it little at a time to not completely smother it. I also don't want to dull my brand new reel.
Yea give it a bit after a top dress to let the sand settle and the grass grow back up through. Can also try hosing it down into the ground. But yea heavier top dress the reel will pick some sand up for a bit.
@@JasonSeiberlich thanks Jason for the quick response! Love your channel. I been watering and feeding heavy and didn't cut as low and its looking beautiful. Just not short enough yet. Gonna wait about another week and try to lower.
What depth setting do you have the sunjoe on?
As low as it will go.
Name of the cutter to cut real short ?
Some sort of reel mower. There are residential options from Allett, Swardman, California Trimmer, McLane and some others that will go low but not quite greens height low. The true greensmowers are from Toro, John Deere, and Jacobsen predominantly as well as a few manual reel mowers like Hudsen Star that will cut very low.
