    Crossing the open steppe has its risks. For both sides. But that highway junction is not Vugledar. There's no high-rise firing positions. So, let's see how this gets done. Should be very interesting. And significant.

    Better than the military summary. Why no hopium or cope. Also you lighten up a terrible war analysis with a bright disposition and I and I'm sure others I love your sense of humor. Plus you make good judgment calls with a good bit of common sense. Excellent job. God bless you and keep you.

      But one should use elevation maps! Anyone who from the taxi driver maps thought that the Russians could advance from lower Dniepr towards Transnistria or Odesa, would quickly forget about that when getting a sense of the landscape. Topographic-map is one great service for free.

    Good analysis of the battlefield, but I am not convinced, that much of the underlying asssumption is true. Pushing really hard to cut roads to Pokrovsk would only make sense now, if the Russians were actually prepared to go all in on Pokrovsk. But that city is supplied by four main roads, only two of which are under any threat to be cut off.
    In my mind, it is more likely, that the russians will just keep up the pressure all along the Pokrovsk front and thus bind plenty of ukrainian troups and ressources there, without actually storming the strongest lines of defense. If their real push goes west in the south of Pokrovsk, the Russians will be able to swing north through Dnipro-Petrovsk after a while and they can continue to push west - both without any comparable fortifications such as Pokrovsk and with sufficient logistics. And once it is really weak, they can also take Pokrovsk.

  • @wolfdreams1545
    @wolfdreams1545 2 дні тому +4

    The fact that the Russians are heading in the direction of the highway in a location east of the Pokrovsk-Mirnograd (fka Dimitrov) agglomeration is proof that it is the main objective of the operations in that direction. It is no surprise since multiple times, the Russians opted to cut off the supply routes and operationally encircle the cities they were looking to capture (most recent examples of these tactics are/were seen in Selidovo and Velikaya Novosolka, respectively). In the west, they are already looking to cut the supply lines linking Pokrovsk and Zaporozhye, and following cutting that route, they will cut the one linking Pokrovsk with Dnepropetrovsk. Pokrovsk and Mirnograd are likely to be captured within the first few months of 2025.

    Nice review.
    Tactically, 'side on' is the French term enfelade which is attacking down the lines from the side of an emplacement, as defelade is negated. Think about being about being attacked from one, two or three sides, let alone encirclement - each has a different level of stress for defenders.
    And we can't just restrict a review to just a ground forces battle. (although Russians on e-scooters is now a thing, and has several advantages)
    Also consider that the defending and attacking side has all sorts of artillery to use (varying mobilization times for size) as well as up to aerial bombing, also factor in anti-air presence (for either side), here the defenders don't have aerial bombing as a viable approach because....
    Each weapon system has an associated cost factor (not just money but time and manpower - logistics). Think about different sized artillery pieces and how many crew, also to load a plane with bombs, how many people are involved.
    Also note that Russian doctrine is asymmetric warfare...
    Good stuff.

    • @bjorntorlarsson
      @bjorntorlarsson День тому

      e-scooters, well, on paved roads. But "dirt bikes", motorbikes made for use in the terrain, that's what is replacing the armored vehicles (that anyway don't protect agaisnt a drone). And with quiet electric such dirt bikes, I imagine that a platoon could storm quite a dstance at night/smoke screen before dismounting for the firefight.

    • @lexicdark
      @lexicdark День тому

      @@bjorntorlarsson the e-scooter videos have been around for 5 months, with even the Ukrainians claiming them in use by their special forces, with big wheels for off road, although I did see one soldier fall over dropping on in a blast hole.
      Motorbikes and quad bikes with trailers also used. Notable use with an opening / gap in dragons teeth where a Ukraine tank was put in the gap and Russians speedily dropped off two tank crew off the back of bikes and they jumped in the tank and used it to push more dragons teeth out of the way and took off with the tank.
      The point is that these are changing/evolving styles and have quite a tactical impact, so are worth noting.

    Why not blow up craters in a road like that? Using artillery if one wants to save the heavy precision missiles (what's the 203 mm caliber Pion made for?) I would've thought that a road only a few kilometers behind the frontline is not useful as a road anymore. Is it useful, or broken by craters?

    hello. There isn't but the function for supplies, and there are still alternatives... ( Bavinkove, Oleksandrivka ...both have a railway too ). But it is too the weak belly of the Russians : the roads and railways can supply an Ukrainan counter-attack, and an Ukrainan counter to the high grounds of Ocheretuyne -Prohres - Novoselivka Persha, if a succes, would force Russians to cross main rivers and swamps , as the Vovcha, to supply their front-troops. It would create again very difficult conditions as were the Donets and, a lot worse even, the Diepr...
    Nyu York- Torrets can have as goal to empeach a lateral attack if Russians would move to at least the Bychok -river and controll that road.... Oleksandrivka would become a main target, but very hard to approach - too long the supply-lines - and Bavinkove, once Oskil taken back... (and,... found a solution for the crossing of the Donets... )... Russians have to remember that head-ache...So, of course the have to trie to eliminate the road Myrnohrad- Konstiantynivka... but if the Ukrainans would prefer them to push more forward, Russia has to prefer stalemate and exhaustion of the Ukrainans ...
    This seems in favour of a bad peace, where Russia gains territory, but at cost of a long , hostile border.... An immense Alsace-Lorraine situation...
    Better should be a demilitarised Ukraina, a neutral force to occupy it ( China-Indonesia-India-... ), and Russia withdrawling of ALL conquested grounds, in exchange of such Asian support to a sustainable peace...
    Details ... have to be negotiated. The maffia of Akhmetov etc... , once pro-russian , never pro-PEOPLE of Ukraina, shouldn't coe back, but , even , are still in the game...
    I think , it will be an "Alsace-Lorraine"...

    It is a very bad situation - Ukraine is pushing the youth onto the front so 2025 is going to be the year of extinction for the nation. These lives being lost won't have any impact on the war, at best it will only delay those in power losing their jobs by another six or eight months. The people who can still get out need to do it without delay.

    Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity.
    In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.
    If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy.
    Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements.
    Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time.
    Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns.
    20th September, 2021: Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO.
    NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter).
    We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.
    Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster?
    Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest.
    Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland.
    Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed.
    Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”.
    Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it.
    Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country.
    Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list.
    Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list.
    There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence).
    The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present.
    Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave.
    Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) R.I.P.
    The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims).
    The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter.
    I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion.
    I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written.
    Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.
