This was a great interview. He's so cool!
He's an absolute joke, this interview is a joke. Disgusting socialites rewriting history to meet their needs of a entertaining show. Lost all respect for this "person". Let's hear your sympathetic thoughts on Hitlers, Mao, Stalin and Pol Pot, whilst you live in opulence and safety ffs.
"She [Imelda] and her husband stole billions of pesos[13][14] from the Filipino people,[15][16][17] amassing a personal fortune estimated to have been worth US$5 billion to US$10 billion by the time they were deposed in 1986"
from her Wikipedia article
Did Mr Byrne cover this aspect in his play? I hope so!
EDIT: According to someone who saw the play, yes he did cover that aspect. (See reply)
they were filthy scumbag crooks. stole pillaged and plundered. ppl were murdered.he was a dictator. she was a c*nt ! him too. total & utter bastards !! its sad that David chose her out of all the ppl he could choose. still David is a genius. ill forgive his poor choice of person.
Spoilers: The show portrays the glamor of Imelda's life but then it makes a major shift and wake-up call. During "Order 1081," the words "3,200 killed; 34,000 tortured; and over 70,000 imprisoned" are projected all over the wall.
The show also ends with the People Power Revolution marching and celebrating the end of the dictatorship, but it also drops a warning that her son is now President of the Philippines.
@@carolinecao9513 ah ok, that's good to know!
David Byrne is my spirit animal.
Fun show to watch. Be on floor and you will have a memorable joyful experience
Talking Heads are one of my favorite bands. Being a big fan of Stop Making Sense, I would love to see this play. Regretfully, I live in Phoenix and I'm poor. Ain't gonna happen but I wish David the best and hope it's a smash hit!
Right on!
This looks interesting! I was a child in the 80's so I don't specifically remember this but I will have to do some research on her!!!
My friend grew up in the Philippines and was (according to her father lucky) to have been born after the Marcos were no longer in power and it's very interesting and the show is amazing.
@@littlesongbird1Oh Okay 👍 Thanks
Oooh a musical about tennis! I'm in!
conan will have to put on his dancing shoes for this one #team coco- marcos 24 the time productivity observation was on point in this talk #time management
team coco is loco
"Once on a Lifetime". "Whose beautiful house is this? ". David Byrne has great skin. Conan wants a Byrne Spot ~ not ticket to show 😂
I went to one of the test runs of this show…David was there taking notes…I went up to him…he entirely ignored me…which is fair enough hehe
I am trying to give him the benefit of doubt. But this has a real 'let them eat cake' feel. i respectfully reject that we accept and dance to the tune of 'power of corruption'.
Yep .. that pretty well covers it.
Except for plundering $10 billion from their country .. Assassinating their political opponents .. tens of thousands of civilians tortured .. thousands murdered in "extra judicial killings" ..
.. mass arrests & tens of thousands imprisoned .. being given the ability to escape any form of justice, and live out the rest of their lives in luxury .. so .. Yay, Imelda Marcos.😻💗💝💞❤
...but she liked shoes, so there's that. David's next musical, Mao Miaow. Mae Zedong as a friendly mass-murdering cat. 🐈
@@luckyleprechaun-mq9in Much as we all would love to be able to jet over to NYC, and catch a glitzy Broadway show; not all Americans are able to so blithely indulge in such swanky diversions.
So, the rest of us had to settle for listening to the actual description of the show from its creator; who conspicuously omitted your desperate recitation of belated excuses & rationales.
And, special congratulations for, so predictably, falling back on such self-congratulatory pseudo-woke Idenitarian commendation, for your extra special virtue-signaling.
It seems that it might be difficult for you to NOT sound like a painfully clueless bourgeois tool, smugly spewing out shallow talking points, as though they were somehow revelatory; but for those of us who lived through that period, and were, in our own small way, working to help Corazon Aquino’s efforts to rebuild a devastated nation; your self-satisfied condescension is more than a bit laughable.
Mr. Mahatir was called Mr. 10 % in Malaysia, because he was rumored to earn 10 % on all business that happened. He broke his opponents financially. Or he put them into prison with pretense claims, such as practicing sodomy. He still is a respected person in the eyes of many.
Although she holds the title for facilitating the biggest theft in any government function in the world, Imelda Marcos is back in power. Imelda was a governor until 2019. The son Bongbong is the current president of the Philippines.
It is a mystery how people manage to forget so fast. How could you help these people, what is the use of you speaking up for the Philippines? They do elect these thieves.
If you have a powerful position, you make use of it to extract as much from the country as you can. While in the rest of the world it does happen, unfortunately, in Asia it is seen as the norm. Until today that is actually the way politics are done here in Asia. May be not as open as before.
Can't wait to see this masterpiece!
Considering the Marcoses are back in power in the Philippines, with Imelda having long desired to clean up their image, her son now president, having a play now that can make people empathize with Imelda the way David Byrne did, the timing seems…. strange. As someone in the Philippines working to help the world and younger generations ot forget martial law or the human rights violations the Marcoses never admitted or showed remorse for, a play that could glamorize her and her family, make her seem like an “Evita” with millions in marketing and production budget feels discouraging to me and downright offensive to those who suffered under their regime. It feels like having a Trump musical that only lightly touches on Jan 6 but focuses more on his The Apprentice days.
Agree. This feels disgusting.

Saw it last night… she is definitely the villain of the story.
@@hummingurbanangelaabsolutely ninoy is the hero
David Byrne did not produce this musical recently. It was first performed in 2013 and if anything its highlighting how bad the Marcoses are beyond their glorified facades even to this day. Im not even a big fan but i know that David took genuine interest in telling this story through his music.
Here lies love... 🪦
Podcasting suits Conan well. I was hugely disappointed years ago when NBC booted him from The Tonight Show and he ended up having to make do with a show on cable. But in this format, free of TV's demands, he can work that slippery balance between serious and silly.
And David Byrne? At this stage of his life, he's a neurodivergent (autism spectrum) who's gotten the hang of this "normal" thing.
I wouldn't even make the table. I'd order up five pounds of bacon and the makings for some great sandwiches. My heart would stop first.
Letterman has been replaying some talking heads, 👍
He’s a lot less weird than I thought he’d be
Here lies love
Love her lies
Lies love here and now
Lies love to grow
Lies big enough to put on a show
Do you know how they have that interview show hot ones where they eat hot wings while being interviewed? I’d like to do a show where I interview people after they’re served or as they’re served the meal they would choose just before being executed you know how if you are going to get executed, you get a final meal with your choice I think it be funny for me to interview the stars as they eat their choice of favorite meal.
So it's an opera basically?
AI's Needle Is Floating
Not Dropped Yet
Start Making Sense
Good Bongos
This musical does not showcase the Filipino culture. It just glorify a senseless grab of power by the marcoses
STOP SENDING EMAILS to David Byrne. let him music.
He does hate unions and tries his best not to employ union workers.
SOMEWHAT eccentric??
wow thats so insulting to the people and families this despot dictator tortured and killed and he's laughing about her story like she has any redeeming qualities. not to mention her family is now back in power. yuck. what a stupid idea, she was a monster.
every person has redeeming qualities.
@@ronpudding9598no not her, or her whole family either
@@ronpudding9598 what are your thoughts on hitler lmao, what a stupid comment
@@ronpudding9598NOT AT ALL. i apologize for sounding very passionate about this and speaking frankly. but please take the time to read up on their political dynasty and what they did to the Philippines. this musical is romanticizing a family that continues to deny what they have done to the country and its people. they do not deserve any empathy when they themselves could not extend any. this is a very complex historical period that has long lasting effects on the Philippine political landscape to this very day. and in a reality where OUR VERY OWN COUNTRY DENIES THAT WE WERE EVER UNDER A DICTATORSHIP, a musical that asks you to sympathize with these corrupt politicians WILL NOT HELP. imelda and her extravagance has been an object of interest since her husband's reign but that is the tip of the iceberg and i really wish more research was done when creating this musical. THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN GREENLIT AND THE FILIPINO AMERICANS PARTICIPATING IN THIS MUSICAL MUST RE EDUCATE THEMSELVES AS WELL
@@jenng.7417 Their family had dozens of journalists killed during martial law and embezzled billions in tax payers money. Their family is one of the primary reasons that the Philippines remains a third world country.
The way David Byrne says he felt sympathetic for Imelda….what a joke. Thank god the musical doesn’t portray it that way.
Yeah he's an absolute joke, this interview is a joke. Disgusting socialites rewriting history to meet their needs of a entertaining show. Lost all respect for this "person". Let's hear your sympathetic thoughts on Hitlers, Mao, Stalin and Pol Pot, whilst you live in opulence ands safety ffs.
how about sympattize with kobe's rape case
DB said he felt empathy (not sympathy) for her, even though Conan asked if he sympathized with her. I’m a little surprised these two very intelligent people seemed to regard sympathy and empathy as the same thing. I get that he’d empathize with Imelda Marcos but would be disappointed to think he felt sorry for her.
Literally the worst show. A crime
Conan... not like this...
Mr. O'Brien talks too much.
Talks about himself too much. This is an interview for us to listen to David Byrne. shut up Conan!!!
