He funnily references Girls und Panzer and as of the Movie, he was now a part of it's production team. Damn Nicholas Moran.
Worked in a hobby shop in my teens. One modeler was very proud of his meticulously applied winter cammo on his model. He was in shock when an ex german tank driver told him "no we just walked around with a mop and a bucket of white wash and slapped it on the tank."
I don't see why the two are exclusive. It is very, very difficult to convincingly reproduce the effect of mop-applied whitewash on a small-scale model. You can spend hours carefully trying to get just the right effect to make it look like some tiny man swabbed it on with a heavy hand. Winter wash is one of the hardest effects to make look right in modeling, along with weathering. it is easy to over do, and easy to under-do, very hard to make it look natural.
I dont see why a normal white camo scheme should be at all difficult _without_ the weathering and hasty application effects to worry about: you just paint it white. No reason that should take more than a few minutes.
Chieftain making a Girls und Panzer reference? My life is complete.
yup :)
well he did help on the series
Your kidding
Worst fucking show ever. Soo cringe
I didn't know he helped with it later on, that's neat! :D
"nothing in any documentation that ever refers to it as a Hetzer". Same goes for the Warthog, but I've never met anyone who ever insisted on calling it a Thunderbolt II.
I was literally going to comment this exact thing
yes, but he means there is no record at _all_ of it being called "Hetzer", not just that there was no use of the term in Nazi or factory documents. Not a single soldier's letter, account, photo caption, requisition order, etc, has ever been found calling the JgdPz38(t) "Hetzer" *during WWII*. On the contrary, the A-10 has been openly called "Warthog" since it entered service, in popular media, popular use, by the crews and all of the military in general, and as a matter of fact in numerous occasions in official USAF and manufacturers documents as well. They may stop short of officially calling it "Warthog", but they do not fail to acknowledge the popular name for it, and in fact encourage it.
So they are not at all the same thing. Hetzer is a term that didn't exist until after the 38(t) was long out of service, the A-10 has been widely known as the Warthog, with very extensive documentation, since the year it entered service.
@@justforever96 Still a Hetzer though
I am sure there is a ton of documentation that refers to the A-10 Warthog.
There has also been some documentation provided since this video was made that there were (rare) references to this vehicle as "Hetzer"
So if you are trying to do something period accurate, you shouldn't call it "Hetzer". But in general discussions for identifying the vehicle today "Hetzer" is the the clearest and most recognizable term.
I thought everyone just called it A-10.
These are an incredible series of videos and really appreciate whoever came up with the idea to do them and all the people involved in making them. If only more games came with and promoted such a useful amount of historical information.
HE MENTIONED GILRS UND PANZER holy crap i almost fell out of my chair that was awesome sir. o7
Holy crap, you're right... missed that on the first time i watched this one :D
Anime sucks.
Austin Allgire He mentioned an utterly ridiculous Japanese cartoon series!!! OMG I'm so HAPPY!!!!!
he contributes to an uttetly ridicolous Japanese cartoon series!!! ;-)
The Chieftain is the best review of tanks because he is a real tanker and he gives a tankers feel for each vehicle.
Thanks again! Loved seeing the 38(t) at the Arlington Fly-In in WA this summer and it driving around on the field
The noise I made upon seeing this was one of pure joy. Thanks again Chieftain!
Thank you for this video. Really enjoyable to see one of the td's I saw in the Ardennes.
Does someone hate The Chieftain? Why do they keep trying to shove him into all these tiny tanks?
For our sadistic amusement.
WW2 was full of tiny tanks with extremely cramped crew compartments. It took a while for the notion that crew efficiency could be more important than limiting space under armor to catch on. The Chieftain largely established his reputation doing video on WW2 tanks as the spokesman for World of Tanks, so he has had to cram himself into a lot of them. Keep in mind that the men fighting WW2 were survivors of the great depression, and often of relatively small stature compared to 21st century tankers due to poor nutrition as children. Also, some nations issued regulations limiting the height of soldiers that could be assigned to tanks in order to make those cramped spaces more viable. The Soviet Union even went so far as to allow a few women in its tank crews.
If you've ever seen him around other people, you realize he's really big guy.
Another great vid. Can't wait to see you squeeze into it. :P
About 10 years ago I was looking for someone to rebind an 1870's family Bible. A local shop put me on the phone with their owner, Hugo, who, it turned out had been a Jagdpanzer gunner. We became pals and regularly met for lunch. Hugo indicated his group referred to their 38(t) as a Hetzer--which he defined as "pest". He claimed to have killed 5 T-34's and two Josef Stalin tanks. Hugo said the Stalins were tough, you had to hit them right where the turret met the hull, and late war ammunition restrictions allowed them only 2 shots per target. He said when he entered the Army the Hetzer had a crew of 4, and at wars end the crew was 54, the regular crew and 50 guys to push it. He was captured by the Russians at the end and spent 18 months post-war as a POW in Russia where he contracted yellow fever. The Russians sent him home thinking he was near death and wanted to be done with him.
lol, love how he comments it's not the same as Girls und Panzer, made me crack up
Love these vids! keep em coming!
you referenced GuP yay!
***** during the show just before the final battle the Turtle Team Panzer 38 t has the entire top of the hull removed and then replaced by the hull of Jgdpanzer 38. He said that it's not as simple as just lowering the hull onto the chasis.
Xplosion51 He also said "As its depicted in Girls und Panzer"
I know it's old comment but he the Chieftain helped make the and credited in the show.
There were some troops that used the nickname "Hetzer" and that is good enough although that name was certainly unofficial.
Do a STUG III
After all, It was the most widely produced tracked AFV for the Germans and had more tank kills than any other
German AFV.
It needs to be profiled.
My father commanded a 38(t) in Czechoslovakia in 1945. He always referred to this as a 38(t) and never as a Hetzer. In all of my reference books, English and German, I have never heard of it referred to as a Hetzer. It is only in the last couple of years that I think the nickname 'Hetzer' was given to this vehicle on the internet and historically is inaccurate. Thank you for pointing this out.
Peter Haase first time i heard it was about 4 days ago.
Read lots of accounts from the time. Never seen the word.
@@sugarnads There are a number of actual WW2 references to Hetzer.
Regarding the use of the name "Hetzer" I'm fairly certain that German troops at the time did in fact call the 38t "Hetzer". I say this because I have seen an interview of a Panther driver who described being mistakenly incapacitated by a 38t:
"I maneuvered out of the village, but as I emerged onto the main road I was fired on by a Hetzer".
He might have used "Hetzer" because now it is the popular name for the 38t, but it felt like he was simply remembering what the 38t was called....*shrug*
Remember Veterans memories are colored as much by after war conventions as they are by things during the war. U.S. servicemen never referred to the M4 as the Sherman during the war. It was only after the war with the media picking up the British naming conventions did that happen. U.S. servicemen simply called the M4 the M4 or mediums during the war.
Similarly U.S. servicemen never called the M10 the Wolverine or the M36 the Jackson/Slugger. They simply called them TDs or by their model number of M10 or M36. However, if you interviewed them years after when they had been exposed to later conventions and media they will use those terms same thing has happened with the Jagpanzer 38t. Not used during the war but came to be known as that after.
Cragified and u.s servicemen couldn't have picked up British naming conventions?
Alex Donnett
Of course not. They were separated by a common language.
Jim fortune wrong. The p-51 was called the mustang by the british. The americans adopted the name.
thunberbolt two
Google "sarcasm"
Hetzer is my favorite TD period. It's just so good if you know how to use it.
Derp kills anything its tier in one shot with a good hit, front armor can plink tier fives, its fast and turns so fast ypu can practically troll light tanks to death.
Just awesome.
Small ,quite agile ,105 mm gun ,and an unique design , all u need to fall in love with this TD :)
what do u mean? is it me? derp? DahDarpyBaws158? me? i got hetzer, i quited the hetzer.
Its angled armor is good early when dealing with Russian tanks.
Great video
Thanks for the video its really awesome.
why would anyone hate the Mighty Hetzer? Well, I guess no one would like the stock engine but the Hetzing Hetzer is something that no one should hate
Agreed! Hetzer 4 Life!
Its the Hurtzer not Hetzer because it hurts both haters and lovers
So cute
Wicked! Love the Jgpdz 38t. Thankyou Chieftain and WarGaming :D
id like to see an argument on a forum about the Hetzer's 4 and 8 hole idler wheels.
googled the e-10 it looks awesome!
Its like an E-25 and a Jgdpz 38(t) had a baby
After the JgPz.38t, can we see the FV4005 at Bovington? I know i'm not the only one who wants to see that giant 183mm gun up close!
it was nick named the "iron coffin" it only had one view port on the front that could not move, making the crew effectively blind, even worse the gun roof mounted mg could only angle down -1 degree meaning it was helpless against infantry, on multiple recorded occasions throughout ww2 the Jgdpz 38t was destroyed by a single infantry. the only escape hatch other than the commanders hatch could not fully open as it was blocked by the roof mounted mg.
Just about every armored vehicle has been called "The Iron Coffin" at some point, dude. Although in the case of the 38(t) it has much more to do with the visual appearance of it. If it was as horrible as you claim, how do you explain the fact that it was a very popular vehicle? Almost everything you mention was cooked up by nerds arguing stats after the war. A 38(t) that got itself surrounded by infantry had failed to follow proceedure, jut like any assault gun. NONE of the Stugs or Jagdpanzers were equipped to combat infantry unsupported, and every one of them was killed by infantry on numerous occasions. In almost every case, it was a "single infantryman" who successfully threw the grenade, or pulled the bazooka trigger that killed it. It is not a video game where you need six guys attacking it at once to put its 'kill bar' over the limit or something. And there would rarely be a case of a single infantryman actually attacking an AFV alone, that would just be stupid. Infantry operate in groups for a reason, playing Rambo is for morons. Although it sometimes makes sense for a single man to dash from cover to attack an enemy AFV as it passes. But every type of AFV that was ever built can be killed in the same way. A 38(t) was not a front-line main combat vehicle, it was a portable AT gun designed to give the crew some mobility and protection against small arms and artillery fragments. It was not meant to get into tank duels, and it was not meant to press forward of the front line unsupported by infantry, or at least other armor. You know who had even less protection than a 38(t) crew? A Pak40 crew. Yet they were among the most successful weapons of the war. How o you explain that? Stop thinking of a 38(t) in terms of MBT combat, it is a self-propelled 75mm gun, that is all it is. And as one of those, it is quite good, especially from the point of view that it was using already-developed chassis that would have been wasted production capacity otherwise. A bad AFV is better than no AFV, and the 38(t) was not taking up production space that could have been used for more Panthers (although even if it did, one must ask how many 38(t) a single Panther was actually worth)
awesome video, ("a lot of soul") the intro scared the shit out of me
2:48 "Girls und panzer" comment!
The fact that he mentioned Girls und Panzer melts my heart for some unknown reason 😅
Great video as ever but, 5:07 why is the batmobile in the background? :P
I had an opportunity to get inside one of these and I got up on top, but I was afraid I could not get myself out so I just looked inside.
Hey Chieftain, Can you make a video or a post on the edge effect? You reference it a lot, but you've never really explained it, as far as I know.
I'd love to see some of the more prototype British tanks like FV4005, TOG-II, Valiant, Excelsior, Conway, MBT-80 or Contentious!
Awesome stuff on the good ol' Hetzer.
Most of those tanks either never existed or no longer have surviving units. The ones that do will surely be off limits for The Chieftain to climb around in. You ask the impossible.
Redwall Warlords Every single tank I mentioned, is stored at the Tank Museum in Bovington and all but the MBT80 in good condition, alongside others like the FV4202. Bovington is also very allowing for this sort of thing and has an open door policy to historians attempting to show tank history to others. They allowed The Challenger from WG to go over their FV4202 in extremely detail, even more than Chieftain does to these tanks here.
2:27 it´s not CDK but CKD
make an episode with the TOGII pls :D
what is song that plays at the begining of the video? ive heard it in the game sky gamblers air supremacy and have wondered for years what its called. can someone please help me out?
Was this an assault gun like the StuG III or was the JagPz 38t a tank Hunter. The StuG were not operate by the Panzerwaffe but were operated by artillery branches. They were to be used like a self propelled gun with armour. Either providing covering barrage fire or latter anti tank support. I can’t imagine the 7.5cm gun being adequate for JS 2 or T26 Pershing. The PAW 600 or PAW 1000 would be perfect armament.
It has a following in wot due to being offered early in tier and having the 105 gun.
Beautiful day to learn about some armor.
I saw your video a while ago and of course I liked a lot! It leaves me a bit baffled that as it is a swiss TD it should have a diesel engine but I saw from the few images that it had a carburetor used only on a gasoline engine! Another thing is that the swiss TD has inverted the position of the commander to the left and the loader to the right but I can see that it still has its original placing! Or it was a final leftover but not suplied for the German army and therefore as it is to the swiss army and slightly modified such as removing the 360○ mg-42 and changing the original idler weel with a post-war weel among other things or it is a good "germanised" restoration! Despite being really cramped and nose heavy on the right that requires careful driving not to add it's very thin sides 20mm armour it seems that it was quite popular with German troops! Could anybody enlightens me on this issue?
Personally, I'd suggest the Panzer IV after this is done. I think that was a fairly widely used tank, after all.
Or maybe something from the KV series.
It's not just kinda cute it's the most fucking adorable tank in the world
Heat lamp? No, old fashioned blow torch is what is used to warm the engine during cold starts. The rack for same is under the right engine lid. Mine Hetzer, excuse the term, also had mismatched idler's. The workers at the factory grab the next part in the bin. the guy putting on the right idler may not know what they guy on the other side is doing, and probably cared little. Armorers the world over care little for correctly matching replacement parts that drive collectors crazy. Somebody has replaced the Swiss G13 radio antenna, that is an original German base to one on the right side.
I had forgotten that the Swiss installed WWII type US (Ford GPW) type fuel filters. That small normal car size battery is not correct for the G13. They used much large US bus/truck batteries, same size as used in WWII halftracks & armored cars. Wow! There is the blow torch that I mentioned. Read about mine and others in A BRIDGE TO TIME, A Re-enactor's Journey from Amazon. I am the founder of the WWII Historical Re-enactment Society that is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year.
Such a tiny little tank. Perhaps even diminutive.
"That would never happen in real life" might be better as "Someone's will get chewed out for this on the battlefield"
god i always wondered what that protrusion was for
hand crank!!!! lol
what!?!?! I have to wait for the next one? :(
The cover for the gun barrel reminds me a lot of the head of the model of the gunship in Half-Life 2. Coincidence?
What was the quality of the Jagdpanzer 38 t's armor? I remember reading somewhere that the quality was abysmally low and that the 60 mm of armor is more equivalent to 30 mm of normal armor. Any truth to this?
Yeah, they were running out of molybdenum and other metals to make good tank armro. Armour was getting brittle then, you don't want that, you want it to deform and absorb the energy of the hit, not shatter and ruin the crew's day.
Lack of alloys made it spall more. yes. It would not so much, shatter, as much as it would crack and spall off chucks which because of the cracking made the armor even weaker towards the next shot and a pain to repair.
Ive just discovered that the opening song sounds really cool at 1.5x the normal speed... its glorious... that aside;
If this tank is the JagdPanzer 38t, why doesnt Wargaming change the name in game? (Also I didnt take you for watching Girls Und Panzer)
Hetzer was the name the German crews gave to it.
He helped make the movie.
Whats the intro and theme music called?
I hope one day you do the T95.
What do you call a short person? Potential Tanker!!
Can you do a review ilon the is3 please
When you have lemon tech you make Jadgpanzers 38(t)'s. It was not designed for comfort, it was made because it was available and the Germans needed anything that could carry a gun....because they had wasted so much time and resources on heavy tanks.
YES!
you watch girls und panzer? do you have figurines?
he was one of the people who worked on the film!
@@joshuamarshman101 omg I can't believe that lol!
I'm pretty sure he's also working on the Das Finale aswell.
He was one of 5 historians that helped in the movie.
Oh, Nick, don't be so shy. You say you don't know why we all like the Jgdpz 38(t) but then you say the words Girls Und Panzer. Also if you don't like the name Hetzer, which while a historical inaccuracy, it's better than the nickname my brother and I use for it. The Weeble-Wobble.
whats the name of the intro music?
Chiefton, what are your thoughts on the transfer to the Collings Foundation and the MVTF's future.
Anyone happens to know what the crews thought of this tank? From what Ive read it was a very succesful tank in the AT role. Think I also read about a crew who felt it was great all way thru 'cept a few minor stuff, like weak engine and too small cover on the machine gun, but nothing about being cramped.
+Idrawdinos Try this. www.pzfahrer.net/armin.html
Thanks man! Really appreciated. Hope we get to see many more vids :)
Also I wanna praise your comments about the impressions you get of being in the crew of whatever tank you show off. Its def the best part of the vids and such info seems rare to come across for many tanks.
Hope we get to see the Tiger II.
Im surprised The Chieftain knew of the GuP Conversion... perhaps he is a GuP fan as well?... movie just came out, I suggest giving it a watch...
He's actually a technical adviser for the movie and is in the credits look it up
and that is one of the most criticised parts of the anime...
OH Boy
The Tank Historian mentioned Garupan?
He helped make the movie.
What's the name of the Intro music??
+Sabbath388 Darude - Sandstorm
How did the cannon was aimed????
when is the next one!!
Looking for stug video walk around ?
Dig into Romanian tanks and you will find this tank. They did the 1st tank destroyer very similar to t38
Huh. I thought it was called the Panzerjager 38 (t). I must have been mistaken. Also, that thing looks small for a German tank!
Most German tanks (numerically) were small.
Also the intro music is from Nirvana School, listen to it and you will hear dum dum dum dumdumdum dumdumdum dumdumdumdum.... but then the next part you'll be like well... go back and listen again and you'll hear how similar they are
Personally I love the Panzer-Jager 38t, but I'd hate to actually have to command or drive one, never mind load the gun.
BMM was formerly known as CKD, not CDK
I hate this tank and a friend of mine hates its users in WoTB, but it's cute as hell and that cannot be denied.
hetzer translates from german as Rabble-Rouser in english. i can see this as an accuarte description for this vehicle actually LOL
At around 7:00 he climbs up putting his hand on the flame guard. If the engine had been running, he might have been seriously burned.
I suspect he is well aware if it, dude. He just finished pointing it out, and even if he didn't already know that it had been sitting there all day, he was just standing with his face and hands within a foot of it on several occasions. If it had been hot enough to burn, he would have felt the radiant heat coming off of it, not to mention heard the sounds of the metal ticking as it cooled and shrank. A hot vehicle makes itself known by a variety of subtle signs.
the factory was CKD not CDK
i think the name hetzer comes from the german verb "hetzen" i dont know what it is in english but i think it is rush or hurry.... :D
Infantry would commonly refer to it as that.
Is there any german tank he aktually likes?
Yes.
@@TheChieftainsHatch And which one is it?
@@Nikolai973 He hasn't done one on the Tiger. I think he's worried he's gonna love it 😂.
Jgdpz 38(t)'s gotta Jag!
Het... Jgdpz 38(t) gonna Hetz!
What if somebody upgrade that thing to latest tech? Like engine, armor, and gun. Man that thing is like mini leopard.
ah the old intro :D
A Girls und Panzer reference, nice!
Good gun, good frontal armour, low sillouette, nimble. Quite good for a tank destroyer. Would rather be in this than a M10.
Except the Jpz38t had way more mechanical problems, was horribly cramped, had horrible visibility, and was very poorly laid out inside. There's a reason this thing was not very popular in the German army
Are you at the Littlefield Museum?
Who els here can Say they have been inside a Jagdpanzer 38t hetzer? i have been in one on militracks 2016 in Overloon the netherlands.
'Close enough' is about the right term. I don't think I could've guessed in my wildest dreams that the Jgdpz 38t was 'built' from the Pz 38t. The two look almost nothing alike.
Nothing like say, an Su85 from a T34 chassis, or a T40 anti-tank gun from the M3 Lee.
this guy is 1.90m tall. how was he even allowed to become a tanker in the US where he was taller than allowed as well?
Mar 1.98m tall. Determination gets you a lot of places...
Switzerland put some saurer engines in it
Hetzer is my biggesssssst love ❤ 😍 !
Wait a minute there buddy! US tank troops didn't really use the name "Sherman". They simply used M4. That said, HETZER!
acknowledging GuP in the HETZER video. \o/
When did he say that? I didn't hear.
Oh... I see! A reference to the part where they buy the upper hull to convert it.
and then proceeded to troll a Maus to its death XD
It still baffles me how that tank survived without the crew getting injured, was it the "Lined Kevlar" they put in the tank or something?
fooeytheduck To put it simply, in the TV show the "sports" tanks are all several times more durable than their historical counterparts, to protect the occupants. The Maus incident was them abusing that fact to perform a feat of endurance that was impossible for a WW2 vehicle, but was achieved because the sports versions have sci-fi level chasis.
42sec of intro :P
Other than that, cool video.
We all know a Hetzer in a tier four battle with the 105 it dominates heck i have gotten a Top Gun with it but in all reality it wasn't that hard to kill.
Allied soldiers loved seeing it and the Stug. They knew anywhere they hit it, it would brew up. Trick was seeing it before that incredible 75 got you.
True,True.
wow very hetzing 10/10
2:29 its ČKD not CDK
I find your video very interesting. However I have a link to an interview with a German veteran recorded in 1971 where he states that he called the vehicle a Hetzer and it seems to be in widespread use by the troops and there is also, "there exists a memorandum from Heinz Guderian to Hitler claiming that an unofficial name, Hetzer, had spontaneously been coined by the troops" in Wikipedia. Note this does not mean everyone used the term, so it is possible that not everyone used the term, but that it was used for this vehicle.
Please check out this interview as I can see no reason why it would be incorrect on this point and is from 1971.
Oh, wikipedia says so? Well, that ends _that_ debate!
@@justforever96 yes it does, thanks for following up the long interview with an actual German tanker as well, you are obviously an idiot.
@@uglyelf1 one guy reminiscing 30 years after the war and a Wikipedia quote do not constitute proof, sorry. Find me multiple veterans all affirming they knew of the vehicle as Hetzer, I might be convincing. Veteran accounts are notorious for conflicting with each other, and with clear historical fact. There are too many ways for memory to be corrupted, too many incentives to " remember" things other than they actually were. A single account is basically worthless as proof, since a majority have proven to be demonstrably false or in error.
